Any tips for improving Civ V fps (running via proton)?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 13 May 2024 - 3:43pm

I occasionally play Civ V (with Lekmod) with friends, but I only get around 30 fps in game, and lower if I zoom in. I suspect the game can't see my graphics card so is using integrated graphics. Before lowering my resolution and graphics settings it was practically unplayable at around 10-15 fps.

Does anyone have ideas as to how I could improve my fps? I was able to get above 100 fps when testing on windows.

Details: Tuxedo OS 3 (Ubuntu-based, KDE Plasma 6, Wayland), 13th gen Intel i5, NVIDIA RTX 4060 (whatever version of it they put in laptops) with proprietary drivers.

I have tried proton 9, experimental, and some GE versions and found no real difference in performance between them. The problem originally started on plasma 5 and has persisted through the upgrade to plasma 6. I've also tried messing with the nvidia prime settings to little success.

Square Enix shifting from "quantity to quality" and be more multi-platform

Gaming on Linux - 13 May 2024 - 3:23pm
Final Fantasy developer Square Enix have released their Financial Results for the end of the Japanese financial year, and it seems they're going through a big change in their strategy.

I started a "Linux gaming on a budget" channel on YouTube and I need your help.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 13 May 2024 - 2:45pm

If you're interested, you could watch my first video and tell me what I could do better.

https://youtu.be/bkSTzDtzyPA?si=j1M-FrsVojouXJmY

  • Is my English good enough? (I'm not a native speaker)
  • Is the video even interesting?
  • What could I improve

More videos about Linux gaming on a cheap Optiplex and a 1st gen Surface Go are coming soon. I would like to use your feedback to improve these upcoming videos.

Thanks 🐧

VR (with Quest 2) on Arch Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 13 May 2024 - 2:44pm

Hello everyone!

I recently bought a Quest 2 and I would like to ask how is VR on Linux. I’m currently running Win11 and I would move to Arch, that’s why it’s in the title.

I have a Ryzen 5 5600G, 32GB of RAM, and an RX 7600

How difficult is it to set it up and how is performance?

Anything major I should know about?

Thanks in advance!

Hearthstone from Battle.net on Lutris, no Options button in Game Menu.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 13 May 2024 - 2:29pm

I installed Battle.net using Lutris, then got Hearthstone from there.

Game seemingly works fine, but the Game Menu (⚙️ button) doesn't have an Options choice.

Manually changing options.txt (C:\users\NAME\AppData\Local\Blizzard\Hearthstone\options.txt) doesn't work because the file gets reset on every launch even if it's set to read-only.

Options button should be between Sign Up & Skip Apprentice

LPCAMM2 upgradeable RAM for laptops sounds awesome

Gaming on Linux - 13 May 2024 - 2:17pm
Since I almost entirely use a desktop or Steam Deck, I don't follow the laptop world too closely but the new upgradeable LPCAMM2 RAM for laptops sounds really awesome.

I'm not sure Linux gaming will ever be good enough.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 13 May 2024 - 1:55pm

Recently i wanted to play Fallout 4 and it worked... perfectly; actually, it was completely seamless. I just ran it through Steam without any issues. Then I wanted to add mods, and while it was a bit difficult to get steam to cooperate with my mod manager, I was alright with it because modding is usually a decent amount of work either way. Then suddenly, after a few days of playing, it started randomly crashing.

I ended up spending a whole day trying and failing to fix it. Could I have fixed it eventually? Probably. I've used Linux for many years now, I love tinkering and would certainly consider myself quite technical, so with enough time I might have been able to, but I don't want to do that; I just want to play my game. So I gave in and moved my files over to the Windows partition that I still keep around after all this time and it worked without any issues.

I have been playing games on Linux without major issues for quite some time, but this experience has made me uncomfortable. It kind of ruined my day, and now thinking back on it, I remember several other times when I wanted to play a game and I needed to apply some fix. Even if it just took a few minutes, it still really dragged that day down. And now I worry that there will be some other game that will randomly stop working and require fixing, or maybe some game will come out that I want to play but won't be able to.

I'm not abandoning Linux, especially since I need it for development, but most likely I will move my main PC to using Windows+WSL and using Linux on my laptop. Simply for the peace of mind of knowing that any games I want to play will just work and to avoid the hassle of dual booting.

I will finally get to the point. I think that for a lot of people, Linux gaming will never be good enough; even if 99.9% of games work, that 0.1% will be a dealbreaker. Or even if all games work that one time when you come home and just want to play a game only for the game to randomly decide not to work will be a dealbreaker. Basically, unless we get proper Linux native souport for all games or Wine becomes a completely seamless experience, it simply won't be good enough for most people. Both of those things are, of course, never going to happen. All in all, I think that's kind of sad.

Anyway, I'm not sure why i wanted to make this post, i guess I'm just kind of annoyed that im going to start using Windows again.

God of War v1.0.12 is running very poorly on Proton Experimental compared to Windows 10. How can I fix that?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 13 May 2024 - 1:50pm

I ran God of War v1.0.12 using Proton Experimental, it is running noticeably worse compared to worse. Lower Frame Rates & lot of stuttering.

In ProtonDB, someone suggested to add the following boot parameter:

split_lock_detect=off

Adding the parameter didn't improved any performance in my case.

Please suggest how can I fix it?

I'm on a potato-tier PC, so can it be the overhead of not running the game natively?

System Info:

  • OS: Debian GNU/Linux 12 (bookworm) x86_64
  • Kernel 6.1.0-21-amd64
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3550H with Radeon Vega Mobile Gfx (8) @ 2.100GHz
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Mobile / Max-Q
  • RAM: 8 GB

Link to the Proton Experimental logs.

Thanks in Advance!

battle.net and WoW close if I swap monitor input

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 13 May 2024 - 1:28pm

Sorry for asking this question, but it's one of those things I don't even know how to google for.

I have a Linux box on my office, with latest Ubuntu LTS, I didn't do anything fancy to it, just testing out how viable it's on long term swap my main gaming pc to Linux. This box connects via HDMI to a monitor, which has a laptop connected to the display port. Whenever I swap the monitor's input so I can look at something on the laptop, when I swap back WoW and battle.net have closed with no error message.

On the "show logs" option in lutris I can see this:

WARNING: radv is not a conformant Vulkan implementation, testing use only. X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes) Major opcode of failed request: 131 (XInputExtension) Minor opcode of failed request: 28 (X_GetDeviceButtonMapping) Serial number of failed request: 222 Current serial number in output stream: 222 X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes) Major opcode of failed request: 131 (XInputExtension) Minor opcode of failed request: 28 (X_GetDeviceButtonMapping) Serial number of failed request: 5290 Current serial number in output stream: 5290 X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes) Major opcode of failed request: 131 (XInputExtension) Minor opcode of failed request: 28 (X_GetDeviceButtonMapping) Serial number of failed request: 205 Current serial number in output stream: 205 X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes) Major opcode of failed request: 131 (XInputExtension) Minor opcode of failed request: 28 (X_GetDeviceButtonMapping) Serial number of failed request: 205 Current serial number in output stream: 205 wine client error:170: write: Bad file descriptor wine client error:278: write: Bad file descriptor WARNING: radv is not a conformant Vulkan implementation, testing use only. Can someone kindly point me in the right direction? Thank you.

Do AMD GPUs really crash?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 13 May 2024 - 12:58pm

I'm looking to upgrade from a 1080Ti to a 7900XTX and someone told me that if it's idle and goes into power-saving mode, it'll crash and require a hard reset of the system.

Is this true? I've been looking into it and there's reports of several problems that require you to force it to run in high-power mode. Given how much this sub fanboys for AMD, I'd think someone would have mentioned this by now. It's not the end of the world but it's pretty annoying to be drawing 100W idle.

There's also supposedly another crash that can happen if you're above 80% VRAM usage which might be fixed in a future kernel update, but that's more reasonable for this sub to not mention, since it's only really going to be a problem for productivity/AI workloads.

Is there anything else I'm missing? (other than the HDMI 2.1 issue ofc)

Modded Minecraft eating all the RAM

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 13 May 2024 - 9:51am

Hi, Apologies for any typos. You know the drill, not my first language. I've been using Linux Mint (Xfce) on Live CD mode, as I wanted to try the OS before installing it. I've tried running a modpack (~200 mods), and it works as long as the allocated memory for the game is 2.0 GB. If the game has more than that, the memory goes up to 100%, even without anything else open, and the computer crashes. This problem never occurred in Windows 11 when more RAM is allocated, even with more processes running. My computer has 8 GB of RAM. I want to specify I'm kinda new to Linux; I know some basic stuff, but other than that. How can I fix this?
