Proton Wineland has been released in version 11.0-20261106.
Proton Wineland is a fork of Proton-CachyOS, a compatibility layer for running Windows games on Linux with additional patches and optimizations.
The update gates the descriptor heap on NVIDIA drivers older than 620.70.06, brings fixes for Phantom Blade Zero, Danganronpa V3, Dark Souls II and One Piece Pirate Warriors 3, plus two bug fixes for the experimental AMD user queues. DXVK-Salkim and vkd3d-proton-salkim were rebased onto the latest upstream.
Wineland changes:
- Latest vkd3d-proton enabled the descriptor heap as default recently after latest NVIDIA drivers stabilised their implementation. As I am not sure what that would bring for older NVIDIA drivers, for now on NVIDIA descriptor heap feature is gated behind a driver version check, and disabled by default on NVIDIA drivers older than 620.70.06 and remain available with
VKD3D_CONFIG=descriptor_heap.Graphics fixes:
- Two important bug fixes have been added to RADV user queue handling.
Wine upstream ports:
- Improved HTTP redirects, request error handling and root certificate loading.
- Fixed installer package selection and desktop shortcut placement for installations shared by all users.
- Improved font loading, GDI+ graphics handling and Direct2D effect initialisation.
- Fixed thread startup and window class error handling.
- Improved system information and registry queries, including registry contents changing during enumeration.
- Fixed file timestamp rounding, archive extraction error reporting and several memory management errors.
Proton bleeding-edge ports:
- Improved video playback compatibility in Phantom Blade Zero and Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony.
- Fixed window decoration handling for Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin under X11 gamescope.
- Removed spurious mouse movement events from the X11 input path, including events caused by scrolling.
- Improved text input, speech and UDP socket API compatibility.
- Fixed Wine loader path resolution when launched through relative symbolic links.
- Improved Steam Input compatibility in One Piece Pirate Warriors 3.
- Added support for copying NVIDIA’s NGX updater from the installed driver into the game prefix.
Other components:
- Rebased DXVK-Salkim onto the latest upstream.
- Rebased vkd3d-proton-salkim onto latest upstream. Descriptor heaps are enabled by default where supported, subject to the NVIDIA driver restriction above.
- Updated bundled RADV to a newer Mesa 27.0 development snapshot.
Very experimental notes: AMD user queues remain experimental and disabled by default. GPU hangs and system crashes are possible but stability should be improved compared to before. I might enable it by default for the next built gated by a kernel feature check.
To try user queues with bundled RADV, use
PROTON_RADV=1 AMD_USERQ=1 %command%. You need compatible hardware, firmware and a matching Salkim kernel or Salkim kernel modules. Testing has primarily been on RDNA 4. LeaveAMD_USERQunset or set it to zero to use the normal submission path.
