Arctis Sound Manager: version 1.6.5 released

The Arctis Sound Manager has been released in version 1.6.5.

The tool manages audio settings of SteelSeries Arctis headsets on Linux, such as microphone EQ, filter chains and the GameDAC display. After version 1.6.4, this release mainly extends device support.

Key changes: new settings for Arctis GameBuds, Arctis 7, Arctis 1 Wireless, Nova Pro Wired, Pro Wireless and Pro GameDAC. For Nova Elite and Nova Pro Omni, ASM now reads the base station’s settings before changing anything. The headset is also found again after resume without restarting ASM. Many new controls are not yet tested on real hardware - owners are asked to report back in issue #331.

Added

  • Arctis GameBuds: choose the audio source, the 2.4 GHz dongle or Bluetooth, the switch GG makes when its EQ panel changes tab. On Bluetooth, this computer’s audio through the dongle no longer reaches the earbuds. Not yet tried on real GameBuds.
  • Arctis 7 / 7 2019 and Arctis 1 Wireless / 1X / 7X / 7P: microphone volume, as GG offers it (0-100). Not yet tried on hardware: if you own one, please tell us on #331 whether it works.
  • Arctis Nova Pro Wired: line out, stream mix and screen dimming. Line out to speakers or streaming, the main / aux / mic stream mix, and when the GameDAC’s screen dims, as GG offers them. Not yet tried on a real one: if you own one, please tell us on #331 whether each control works.
  • Arctis Pro Wireless: the settings GG offers for it. Volume limiter, the muted microphone’s LED, the screensaver and its delay, Bluetooth at power-up and game mute during a Bluetooth call, each with GG’s own values. Not yet tried on a real one: if you own one, please tell us on #331 whether each control works.
  • Arctis Pro GameDAC: the settings GG offers for it. DAC gain, line out (speakers or streaming) with its four stream mix levels (game, chat, aux, mic), and the screen brightness, each with GG’s own values. Not yet tried on a real GameDAC: if you own one, please tell us on #331 whether each control does what it says.

Changed

  • Arctis Pro GameDAC: sidetone has GG’s four levels (off, low, medium, high) instead of a 0-10 slider whose upper levels the DAC has no use for.
  • Nova Elite and Nova Pro Omni: ASM reads the base station’s settings before changing any (#331). Every start used to push ASM’s defaults over what the base already had: sidetone, microphone volume, noise cancelling, auto-off, line out and stream mix, screen saver and home screen, Bluetooth preferences. A setting you never changed in ASM now keeps the value the base holds, set in GG on a dual-boot or on the base itself. Thanks @FrDrebin and @PointyKite, whose probes gave the layout.

Fixed

  • The headset is found again after a resume, without restarting ASM (#325). On SteamOS the dongle came back after sleep (lsusb listed it) but ASM kept saying “no device detected” until its service was restarted: the USB library only updates its device list from hotplug events, and that one never reached the container. When the system lists the headset and ASM does not see it, ASM now opens the USB library afresh and looks again. Thanks @rasmus91 for the logs that pinned it down.
  • Nova Elite: the microphone and Bluetooth EQ presets now apply; Nova Pro Omni gets them too. ASM sent them with commands that do not exist on this family, so picking one changed nothing. They now go out as GG sends them, with GG’s own preset curves (Bass Boost from GG’s interface: its database holds a copy of Smiley under that name, and an Elite base reads back the interface’s curve); the Omni also gets its Walkie Talkie microphone preset. The Elite’s wireless mode and base volume controls are gone: the base has no command to change either, and GG does not offer them. Both are still shown.
  • Arctis 9 Wireless: battery, ChatMix and on/off are read again, and “Shutdown after” means minutes (#331). The headset’s status reply does not start with the command that asked for it, so ASM never recognised it. And the shutdown delay went out as seconds: “90 minutes” switched the headset off after 90 seconds. Thanks @globeFrEak for the probe that showed both.
  • The sidebar fits short windows instead of overlapping. Its seven buttons and the logo need about 990px; in a shorter window the fixed-height buttons ran into each other and the ASM logo was cut off. The buttons and their icons now shrink with the window until the column fits, and stay full size when there is room.
