Valve has expanded its “Verified” compatibility program to two new devices: Steam Machine and Steam Frame, both launching this summer.
The Steam Machine is a SteamOS PC for the living room - roughly six times more powerful than the Steam Deck - running the same software stack (SteamOS, Steam UI, Proton). Verification requirements are nearly identical to the Steam Deck: games already verified there need no additional work. The Steam Frame is primarily designed for high-performance game streaming, but can also run SteamOS games standalone, including VR titles.
Steam Machine
The Steam Machine is a SteamOS-running PC designed to make it easier to play PC games in the living room. The hardware is approximately six times as powerful as the Steam Deck, but the software is the same as on the Deck, including SteamOS, the Steam user interface, and Proton (our tool for running Windows games on SteamOS).
Long story short: if your game already runs well on Steam Deck, it will also run well on Steam Machine without any additional work on your part.
Steam Frame
Steam Frame was designed primarily for high-performance streaming of games from a PC. However, the device is also a fully-fledged PC with SteamOS and standalone capabilities: games can run entirely on the headset without a connection to other devices. The test criteria apply to both VR and non-VR titles.
Steamworks partner dashboard updates
In addition to updating the Steamworks documentation, we are today updating the Steamworks partner dashboard to include compatibility review information for Steam Machine and Steam Frame. Many titles have already been reviewed, and you may see verified titles for one or both of the new devices.
