Error installing game "could not find steam.exe"

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31. Mai 2024 - 16:08

I want to install the non steam version of Counter-Strike 1.6 on Mint. It's not that I haven't tried using Proton on steam, but it gives me the error message "could not find steam.exe to launch" after installation. Normally it does not require this file to run on windows.

Nvidia power draw on Linux and lower performance

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31. Mai 2024 - 15:34

So I was testing my GPU's (Nvidia 1650S) behaviour under Linux in Helldivers 2 and noticed that it draws 15 to 20 less watts than in Windows (80-82 vs 98-100) despite having Maximum Performance set in nvidia settings and gamemode configured. Temps are fine too, under windows with 100W it only gets to 58C and that's a full stock behaviour.

In both systems it goes 100% GPU util.

Not to mention that nvidia-smi power shows that max draw is 120W, but nvidia-smi performance shows either idle or SW power cap active. I wonder if I can do something to make my gpu use *more* power under Linux so I can rely less on Windows?

My system is Linux Mint 21.3 and drivers are 555

Optimising an old laptop to play Minecraft (Java edition) and nothing else

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31. Mai 2024 - 15:22

A friend of mine has an old laptop they want to optimise to run Minecraft Java edition (specs below). They don't have any experience with computers so they asked me to help. They have a different laptop they use for everyday things, so the old laptop can be dedicated to running Minecraft as best as it can and nothing else.

My guess is that Linux is the best option for this laptop, since Win10 won't be available for much longer and Win11 eats up so much RAM. Now, my question is, what should I pay attention to for Minecraft? I know the game is optimised weirdly (or not at all) compared to other games, but I don't know any details about it.

I also have to keep in mind that my friend has little computer experience. That means the Minecraft launcher should start with one click via a link on the desktop or taskbar like it does in Windows. Preferably, any maintenance like Java and driver updates should be handled either automatically or from a single additional shell script that can be run with one click from the desktop. It also needs to support wireless internet and playing on Minecraft servers online.

I myself have plenty of experience with programming and all kinds of Linux distros, but until now I've always used Windows 10 for gaming so this specific area is a bit new to me.

Are there any special distros or tools I should consider for this? I know Steam has something called Proton, do I need to start looking into that? And what kind of performance should I expect?

Laptop specs: Lenovo IdeaPad C340-15IML with an Intel Core i5-10210 (4 cores, 8 threads, base 1.8GHz up to 4.2GHz boosted) and 8GB memory. The laptop technically has a dedicated GPU, but it's a GeForce MX230 with 2GB memory. The built in keyboard is also broken, though I don't expect this to matter much.

Recommendations gaming PC?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31. Mai 2024 - 15:05

Hi, I'm looking to possibly replace my Shadow Blade Win10 cloud PC with a local Linux machine for gaming. I currently use Linux Mint on a Mini-PC for everything else, and would like to keep that OS if possible, and run games through Steam Proton.

Can someone give me a rough overview of what parts would be recommendable and what it would cost me? I'm not playing MMOs, so it doesn't have to be ultra high-end. These are the specs that have worked well for me in the past on a Windows PC, so comparable performance would be nice.

-Intel XEON2.5 3.1 GHz 8 vCores

-Quadro P5000

-12GB RAM

And it would be fantastic if it could fit in a rather small case, but that's optional.

Budget...I don't know, but let's say preferrably around 1000, or if necessary up to ca. 1500€.

Keyboard stops working in game (PopOS)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31. Mai 2024 - 14:40

Hey, I've just switched over from Windows and all is going great except this annoying little problem:

Whenever I tab out and back in of the game Football Manager (via steam), my keyboard just stops working in the game. It works fine outside the game, I can still tab out and do anything else outside the game, but it does nothing in the game.

Strangely, switching from full screen to windowed fixes it ... until I tab out again.

Anyone has some ideas?

Warthunder VR?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31. Mai 2024 - 14:33

I've recently switched to Linux (Zorin) and have been learning a lot with it - but admittedly i'm still pretty green.

I've looked for a solution to this for days, and maybe it's not possible, but has anyone had success playing Warthunder (steam or standalone) in VR? I've been able to get Assetto Corsa to work, Star Wars Squadrons, Elite Dangerous, and No Man's Sky...but for some reason, I just can't get Warthunder to run in VR. I've tried the native Linux version and i've tried forcing GE_Proton (steam version).

I'm just curious if anyone has had success or would like to try and troubleshoot it with me.

Thanks.

I appreciate any help trying to troubleshoot this.

Help Needed: Syncing Save Data for Stray Gods Across Ubuntu PC and Steam Deck

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31. Mai 2024 - 12:58

Hey everyone,

I'm having trouble with my save data for Stray Gods across my Ubuntu PC and Steam Deck, and I could really use some help.

Here's the situation:

  • I started playing Stray Gods on a plane, so I was offline.
  • Later, I launched the game on my Steam Deck before syncing the save data online via my PC.
  • Now, my Steam Deck isn't picking up any progress from the PC.

What I've tried so far:

  • I attempted to locate the save files on Ubuntu but couldn't find them.
  • Tried forcing a manual save by completing another mission.
  • Changed the Proton version.
  • Uninstalled and reinstalled the game on the Steam Deck.

Unfortunately, nothing has worked. At this point, I'd be happy to just move my Ubuntu save data to my Steam Deck and continue from there, but I can't locate the save files on Ubuntu.

For reference, both my Steam Deck and Ubuntu installation are on the latest versions (Ubuntu 24.04 and Steam Deck latest beta update).

Has anyone faced a similar issue or have any advice on how to resolve this? Any guidance on where the save files might be located or other troubleshooting steps would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I need to go into desktop for work most days, makes no sense to always go into steam.

Thanks

Path of Exile 2 will have couch co-op, cross-play and cross-progression

Gaming on Linux - 31. Mai 2024 - 10:28
I know there's quite a lot of Path of Exile fans here, especially as it works so well with Proton on Linux PCs and Steam Deck. Sounds like Path of Exile 2 is going to be a whole lot better too.

GoW Ragnarok and Until Dawn might not work on Linux or Steam Deck

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31. Mai 2024 - 10:13

Currently the Steam page for God of War Ragnarok and Until Dawn clearly state that a PSN is required. It doesn't say what it's for, the games do not have multiplayer to lock behind a PSN account requirement like Ghost of Tsushima did. And it even says on the GoT Steam page that the PSN account is required for the multiplayer and PS Overlay. So for now I feel like it's safe to assume until otherwise stated by Sony, Steam, or the developers of these games say what it's required for, we should assume it's for the game. And if that's true, that's pretty bad for people who wanted to buy the game and they should not preorder or buy if they only or primarily game on Linux/Steam Deck. Especially since there is zero reason to lock a single player experience behind a PSN account requirement that offers zero benefits beyond trophies.
