Is comfortable Linux gaming possible with a GTX 1660ti + Linux Mint?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 07. Januar 2025 - 21:41

I'm trying out Linux gaming again and I ran into some performance problems lately. I did some research and it seems that older GPUs like Pascal-Turing generation don't cope so well with DXVK. I run a 1660ti, so that falls into the Turing generation. I'm also gaming on Linux Mint which apparently isn't well supported by Lutris driver guides at all: https://github.com/lutris/docs/blob/master/InstallingDrivers.md Is a comfortable gaming experience possible on this setup or should I go back to Windows for the time being until I build a new PC?

Wayland Gamescope does nothing

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 07. Januar 2025 - 21:38

Alrightttt,
Im running fedora 40 KDE and try to upscale ETS2 with gamescope. I have a rx7800xt. I installed gamescope and set the launch options in steam to "gamescope -h 720 -H 1440 -S integer -f --debug-hud -- %command%". The game renders perfectly at 720p. But thats it. No upscaling whatsoever. What do i do wrong?

[Help] Minecraft Lunar Client crashes on startup

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 07. Januar 2025 - 21:07

I'm having trouble running 1.8.9 Minecraft on the Lunar Client. It crashes on startup, and the logs mention ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException and OpenGL issues. Normal Minecraft launches fine.

Relevant System Specs:

  • OS: Fedora XFCE
  • GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3060 (drivers installed) (Nouveau disabled)
  • Java Version: JRE 1.8.0

What I've tried so far:

  • Resetting all options.txt files
  • Updating and even reinstalling NVIDIA drivers
  • Reinstalling Lunar Client
  • Practically anything I could find on the internet

Issue with Titanfall 2: Won't load after Resawn logo (in Steam)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 07. Januar 2025 - 19:01

Hi. I'm using Endeavour OS with Plasma, with an RTX 3060, and since some time (I can't find when), Titanfall 2 won't load past the Respawn logo. After that, the screen remains black.

I tried removing Northstar mod, several Proton versions, and even a driver downgrade until 550.xx version (545xx or older won't build). I own the game in Steam.

It looks it's a known issue. Also, the remaining games work flawlessly. I don't think it's an EA issue because I tried with other games like Battlefield 4 and it works.

Thanks.

Minecraft Datapacks in Arch Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 07. Januar 2025 - 18:37

I play minecraft on arch linux and i wanted to install the falling trees mod for fabric to it. The mod needs to have a datapack installed with it to work now (starting from 1.21). When creating a new world, i press the open datapacks folder and it doesnt open the folder. How do i fix this?

A bit lost in all the GPU options

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 07. Januar 2025 - 18:12

Hi /r/linux_gaming! It's been more than a decade since I last shopped for a GPU, and since this is my first time buying one for a linux system and since my situation is a bit more unique this time around, I figure I'd ask some help here.

I am buying a GPU to be used as an eGPU on a linux system. The GPU will run over PCIe (over oculink), so that should not be a problem. Since my laptop has an AMD CPU (Ryzen 7 7840HS) and a built-in GPU it seemed reasonable to me to go for an AMD GPU. As I am planning to game on an external 4K monitor, I looked at the top of the line, which seemed to be the RX 7900XTX.

Now that AMD is announcing its new GPUs I am wondering if this is still the best decision. Based on what I've read, it seems that the RX 7900 XTX will remain AMDs top model, even when the new cards come out, except for games that rely heavily on ray-tracing. Now, my questions:

  • Will the RX7900XTX remain the best AMD has to offer for the next few months? Or is there a reasonable chance one of the new cards will be better than it overall?
  • Is the price of the RX7900XTX expected to drop with the announcement of the new GPUs? Or would it stay the same since it's not really contending with them
  • If one of the newer GPUs is a better option in the end, can I expect them to be support on Linux right out of the gate? Or would I need to wait for newer kernels to be released before the GPU is usable? If I need to wait for a newer kernel, how usable are the GPUs in the meantime? Slow but usable? Or just completely unusable in the first place?
  • Given that I have a linux machine and a AMD iGPU, are the nvidia cards worth considering at all? Or is it just not worth the hassle? I get that gaming on 4K requires quite a beefy card and it would be nice to play titles like baldurs gate, cyberpunk, the witcher 3, ... at high to ultra settings, at at least 60 FPS. I don't require a card that is guaranteed to handle all the latest games for the next few years.
