What are the key components in a Linux distro that I should keep in mind if I want to game and i have an NVIDIA GPU?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 15. April 2025 - 02:01

Hi all,

So I'm newish to Linux and I decided to start off with Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. Partly because I'm also trying to see if I can move my gamedev workflow from Windows to Linux and saw that 22.04 LTS was supported for things like Unreal Engine and Unity but since 22.04 is kind of old, and I also don't just want to be locked in to literally one distro option, I thought I'd start with 24.04 instead and go from there even if the distro version isn't officially supported.

Overall it's actually quite good, but when I tried playing games, the experience was really, really bad. I have an RTX 3080Ti and was using the 550 proprietary drivers, which are the ones that are tested for 24.04.

Checked out protondb and did some of the common changes with only marginal improvements to the games I was testing out on. FPS was really low and frame pacing was really choppy. I then decided to go with newer drivers and went down the line on the ones offered in the Ubuntu drivers app thing and all the untested ones had graphical issues with the main one being that the screen would black out (all except the game UI) and I'd have to wait a while to get my image back.

At this point being at a loss I figured I'd see what my luck were if I just updated to the point release instead of staying on LTS so I moved over to 24.10 and the difference was like night and day, games were running incredibly smoothly one was even running better than on Windows by a significant amount.

This kind of got me wondering what are the considerations to make when choosing a Linux distro for gaming, especially if I'm looking to game across the board and play anything from the latest games to games that are 10+ years old and possibly even some emulation. I would imagine that things like Kernel and nvidia driver version would matter, what about desktop environments?

Just to be clear, I'm NOT looking for distros built specifically for gaming (so things like Bazzite and Nobara) but rather the components of a distro that would matter most when wanting to game. As my experience stands now, at least as a beginner in the Linux world, I likely wouldn't try any other LTS distro given my experience with Ubuntu LTS

Edit: Accidentally typed RX 3080Ti instead of RTX haha

Audio Problems with Discord

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 15. April 2025 - 00:55

It isn't a game but I guest a lot of people here use discord so, today I enter into discord everything is okay except I can hear anything in a channel, the rest of members can hear me.
Also I can hear other sounds from discord like notifications or sound panel (preview only).

I already check if the sound settings had wrong configuration but it isn't the case

- Manjaro, kernel 5.15.179-1-MANJARO
- Discord version 0.0.90-1

Lutris steam overlay?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 15. April 2025 - 00:39

Can't seem to find a definite answer on this. Is there a way to get the steam overlay working when adding games from lutris into steam? The shortcuts work but it doesn't display the steam overlay. Not sure if this is something that just doesn't work with lutris or it's a configuration issue

Are MangoHug default presets broken?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 14. April 2025 - 23:59

Hi. I seem to have encountered a bug with MangoHud, but before I report it and clutter up the issues with nonsense, I though I'd check here.

I installed MangoHud and setup the config per instruction. I don't really want to customise the MangoHud.conf, I just want Steam Deck's default presets, which from my understanding are default in MangoHud anyway.
So, in the config file I set preset=0,1,2,3,4 and it seems fine. However, when I'm in the game, and the I toggle through the presets, they all work except the fsp only one (1). That one shows me a vertial line down about 1/4 of the left side of the screen, and all the text is squashed together and garbled.

  1. Is it just me or is default preset 1, the fps only one, broken?
  2. If it is not broken, can anyone tell me if there's a system-wide default presets.conf file (the one that applies if XDG_HOME/.config/MangoHug does not contain any presets.conf file) so I can see what's goiing on there?
From what I can tell, one does not exist.
  3. Does anyone have the presets.conf file setup the same way as the Steam Deck for me to manually define?

The Sims 4: Not launching Nobara

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 14. April 2025 - 23:28

Hi. Im so confused.. I'm okayy at linux but this just bamboozles me... No logs are outputted... Doesn't work with shortcuts.... What?

I've had The Sims 4 working on this same system, but I reinstalled nobara so it would have more space on my dual boot system. I've got a AMD Ryzen 5 3400G with Radeon Vega Graphics, Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 (Discrete), and over 180GB of disk space left.

Sims just installed, it launches, processes Vulcan shaders, says it is running and then just stops.

I've tried the PROTON_LOG=1 launch option, but the output file doesn't exist...

I've reinstalled The Sims 4, 3 times now... & It's always the same. I just don't get it.

Screen tearing in Dark Souls 3 on Debian 12 (Proton)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 14. April 2025 - 23:02

Hey everyone!

I'm trying to run Dark Souls 3 via Steam using Proton on my Debian 12 setup. The issue is, the game doesn’t have a Vsync option in the settings, and I’m getting some really bad screen tearing.

Has anyone dealt with this before or know a good fix?

I'm running an R9 280X with the AMDGPU driver.

Thanks in advance!

Fedora is a great distro (2 weeks on daily using fedora)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 14. April 2025 - 21:59

i recently was having a hard time to switch from windows to linux.

for some reason i can run proton on any on the more common distros (ubuntu, mint, manjaro). i dont know why but steam was install correctly and proton but any game get launch

after this, i was really frustrated and was to stop trying to find another os than windows, but a friend from work talk about fedora and i decide giving a try.

and oh man,this work perfect!

the installation was very easy (i think almost all distro have this no pro user installation)

but the thing i was really surprise is that proton work perfect, on a previews attempt, i was able to run god of war 2018 on mint but ragnarok was impossible.

but on Fedora, with the tweak that proton db mention it work, also i try subnautica zero below same case, on the mint attempt this game never go, but now go flawlessly.

also a problem i have was the ssd were i have all my game this is ntfs drive and some distros have problems with this format, fedora also has but the fix is really fast and its more a windows issue than fedora itself.

this give me confidence to try heroic making my daily os capable of using epic games, ganes i was a bit scare of this, i mean some games on epic are available at steam and proton db also enlist them, but on windows epic is a pain in you know were, this due to some weird configuration.

i havent try aaa games, besides bioshock which run perfect and at 165fps, i have to make some heroic configuration tu see the textures perfect but anything else all games i try work perfectly.

also i recently update my main pc, from a rtx2060 to a rx7600, and games like fall out 3 (without mod) stop working i have to do alot of work around to make it work and wasnt perfect, i want to try it on linux and see how it runs

at this point i have to say, this is a great user experience, my AMD graphics runs perfect on this distro i have seen that whrn my pc go to sleep the cooler fan stop, THIS NEVER HAPPEN ON WINDOWS

also FLATPAK is great, i use orca slicer to 3d print and i love it but since the only version for linux some time ago only was the appimage this dosent work in alot of distros without a complex process, but flatpac make it so painless that im sorprise

right now im looking for some good alternative for software like fusion360 if i found somethig i will update but fedora is a 10/10

Which one between these two?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 14. April 2025 - 21:57

I'm a long time player (start on Amiga 500, then Macintosh, then PC, and all Nintendo consoles alongside) but now I'm midly fedup of Windows.

I'm also a IT consultant (Mac expert, but good knowledge of windows too and some linux servers skills).

Now I dare to ask, the "ever damn day question on this sub", which distro to use for a simple gaming-multimedia usage ?

I narrow my search on Garuda and EndeavourOS for the "arch base" and KDE plasma GUI.

Which one is the "best" between these two, knowing :

- I'm full AMD (5800X3D and Radeon6950XT)

- I really need "SPDIF" 5.1 sound output on HDMI (I have a HDMI/SPDIF splitter), like DTS connect or Dolby Digital Live on Windows

- I use controlfan on Windows to calm down fans

- I use OpenRGB to control RGB in my case and my CoolerMaster keyboard (and my "steel series" mouse but not really)

- I already test HDR on windows and experiment an awful result

- I have a cheap fingerprint reader because I love TouchID on macOS and use Windows Hello too

- I doesn't want to "work" too many to use this computer (I like computer tech challenge, but it's already my job all day long)

Deadspace: Stuttering issue not seen on Linux!

So originally played on Linux and had some stuttering, played with settings it went away (FSR). I was in windows yesterday, couldn't be bothered to reboot and had loads of stuttering moments. Just had a godo couple of hours session on Linux, not one stutter plus seems to be running much smoother

I developed my handdrawn tower defense game entirely with free software, so it felt only right to get the word out in my splash screen!

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 14. April 2025 - 20:31

I grew up in a Linux only household, besides a rebellious teenage phase when I switched to windows to play games with my friends :D
Using Krita and Godot out of the box on my 2 in 1 convertible making games for ten hours on a laptop battery feels insane. If you are interested in Tower Defense and or Deckbuilder games, wishlist Hand of Hexes to get notified when the demo drops.
The entire game is made using Godot and Krita with icons from game-icons.net and textures from sites like publicdomainreview.org . We truly live in exciting times!

GPU-Screen-Recorder-ui New Audio Section.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 14. April 2025 - 19:28

GPU-Screen-Recorder is a great tool to record videos, but the way the graphical user interface have/had some issue, one of the is how you can record audio.

The way the audio is recorded have some issues, each new entry is a separate audio track. The best practice for video recording is to record most audio into separate audio tracks because even if the game is too loud in the recording, you can later lower it in editing so other audio (like discord vc) can be heard much easier.
But putting every programs audio into separate track is time consuming and it's unpractical, and you can run into an issue where you forget to put a program's audio into a audio track so it doesn't get recorded, which can be really frustrating once you realize that you didn't recorded audio that you wanted.

Currently the way you select audio to be recorded in the gui (both gsr-gtk and gsr-ui) is by adding a device or an application audio (or custom application audio), each device/application gets it's own audio track making it easy to record selected devices/applications, but if you want to record an audio track which records every applications that aren't specified isn't possible because it would record every applications audio as well. And there is another issue with this ui. The "Record audio from all applications except selected ones" doesn't work correctly if "Split each device/app audio into separate audio tracks" is selected, because each audio track will only not record the selected device/application. So you don't want to record multiple applications audio and want to keep each audio track separate, too bad you can't because each entry it's own audio track so one of these (assuming you don't want to record 2 applications audio) is always recorded in to the audio track.

GPU-Screen-Recorder-gtk's audio section with view set to advanced.

But with the latest commit for GPU-Screen-Recorder-ui the audio section is completely redesigned, and allows you to add audio tracks and each audio tracks what should record, and you can enable each audio track that it should not record selected application's audio making it possible to have a track for every application but two and have tracks that for that two applications.

GPU-Screen-Recorder-ui's audio section with the latest commit with view mode set to advanced (commit 0018788780d756dbf0d3a77f6b40b384183348f7).

In this image I set it up in a way that the first audio track records the mic, the second audio track records everything but zen (browser) and discord (it shows up as Chromium) and a third audio track that only records discord's audio.

This was possible before with GPU-Screen-Recorder but the guis weren't able to because making gui is not easy, you need to make sure that it's easy to understand what things do, so the developer needed time to think how would it the best way to make it easy to understand.

I like this change, it makes GPU-Screen-Recorder's guis more powerful and at this point I can fully recommend this to record over obs studio. I hope that the developer can improve this program because it's one of the best program out there.

AMD Radeon RX6500 XT strange behaviour

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 14. April 2025 - 19:26

Hello! This is my first post and I want to understand what is happening whit my setup in Linux. I’ve been around Linux since 2007, but for gaming, windows was always the way to go. Since first SteamOS and Steam Machines I’ve been trying to play in Linux, getting worse performance than windows by then. Nowadays with Steam Deck, gaming in Linux is like black magic, BUT it has its concerns. In my case I’m having strange behaviour in my RX6500xt 4GB. It’s mounted in an B450m Aorus Elite (I know, PCIE 4.0 card in PCIE 3.0 slot is not a smart choice, but I have to live with that). My CPU is a Ryzen 5 5600x, 16GB RAM, display 2560x1080 ultra wide, and Sound BlasterX AE 5plus. I’ve tested 2 games that I’m currently playing (started in windows, but it’s time to evolve to Linux): Shadow of the Tomb Raider and The Witcher 3. They’re old, but at my age, still prefer the classic to then move for the new stuff. I’ve tested a various of distros with these games: Manjaro, Ubuntu, Bazzite (DE and HTPC), Nobara (DE and HTPC), Garuda, Linux Mint and official SteamOS 3.8. In Debian based distros I’ve had only bad performance, low FPS (18-20fps) in hit settings in both games, but sometimes those games started with good frame rate and suddenly had a big drop, even down to 8fps and never returned back to some decent speed. With Bazzite and Nobara, I had better experience, because got good frame rate in those games, but after some time of playing (10 to 30 minutes) the also had the frame drop and games became unplayable. In SteamOS mode, in Bazzite, sometimes games started with some artifacts that I didn’t like and in Nobara, after some time of playing, games crashed. I’ve been always playing in high settings, because in windows I can run this games in High settings with decent frame rate at a resolution of 2560x1080. In official SteamOS both games where playable, but with worse framerate (about 28fps in tomb raider and 20fps in the Witcher). But Witcher was very playable using FSR, giving 60fps y high settings. Here comes the incredible fact. Using Arch based distros, manjaro and Garuda, games played extremely well, but in some cases. If I play Shadow of the Tomb Raider in Ultra settings, I get 40 to 60fps (V-Sync on), the bad is that sometimes it stars to go slow and fps rates go down to 25 and never recovers. I can play this game in windows in ultra and get 34-38fps and never goes down. BUT I’ve found that if I set the game in ultra mode and lower texture quality one step, the game goes 53-60fps (V-Sync on) at 2560x1080 and never goes down, it keeps always whit that average fps count. Compared with windows, it gives 39-49fps, what meas that Linux performance is about 10fps higher! The only grip is that I have to lower textures one step to avoid game start lowering fps until become unplayable. In windows I can play with max texture quality with constant but slow fps count. In the Witcher, with Arch based distros happens the same. If I use Ultra settings in Linux, game starts with 40fps but while exploring around 5 minutes, fps count goes down to 8fps. While in windows, in ultra mode I have constant 35fps. BUT if I play in “High” settings in Linux, Witcher 3 performs 45-54fps compared with windows, same settings, which gives me 37-52fps. It was tested in Novigrad, where the amount of npcs and buildings affect in memory consumption.

So, what I’ve found is that Linux gives better performance, but I have to gater settings in some way to not push my RX6500xt to the max memory consumption, or rapidly it will become slow. If I put game settings between certain limits, this card give me an average of 10fps better than windows, which is a lot of performance! In windows I can push this card at maximum, giving me a constant performance, choppy, but constant, even so, plays worse than it could me if Linux could handle my card better.

This is why I ask for the community. Is there some way to configure my graphics card to not lose performance if it starts very fast and solid, and then goes dramatically down when I set games in ultra settings? Or will I always have to down the settings to something that my card will handle extremely well, but sacrificing visuals knowing that this card can give more? Because I think this has to do with the Linux memory management of the VRAM or something with mesa drivers. For now (and after trying different distros) I’m using Garuda Linux which is giving me the this “solid” performance, but always trying to improve the potencial I know my graphics card has. I hope someone can help me to find an answer.
