Dual Boot or VM as a back-up?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Juni 2025 - 22:46

Thinking about finally switching to Linux. From a work aspect i seems like the project should be easy enough. But from a gaming aspect there are still a few things missing like having access to Game Pass, to play whatever random game my mates find on there.

So as a backup Windows gaming solution would you recommend Dual boot or a Vm with GPU pass through. Obviously Dual boot is more guaranteed to work but VM seems way more convenient.

I saw Mutaha do it in this video.

Mint newbie. Gaming has been terrible so far, help:( LMAO

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Juni 2025 - 22:24

Title, basically. I watched muta's video on how to switch over to Mint because I HATE windows 11 since its so slow and bloated, did all the installing on mint, downloaded the last drivers for my GPU using the driver manager, and so far 3 days later, it's been great in everything that doesn't involve gaming.

Gaming has sucked really bad for some reason that I attribute to my noob status on the matter lol.

I have a GTX 1080, a Ryzen 5 2600x and 32GB of ram. I mean, its not the best setup in the world, but it worked kinda decent (pretty big * in kinda) on windows 11, but now on Mint, a lot of things feel... "choppy", almost like my PC is skipping frames constantly.

e.g, I love F.E.A.R 1 right? So I tried it last night on some of my free time, and although the game itself runs at like 300 FPS at all moments, it feels and looks INSANELY choppy. I said "ok, maybe its the game itself because it also has its issues on windows, let's try Halo CE", and it turned out to feel the same, really choppy, almost with input lag, I feel like I'm skipping frames all the time and games even freeze lol.

My attempts with basically all the other games I've tried so far end up the same so far. Oh magic linux gaming oracles, please help this noob out:( where can we start?

RimWorld - Odyssey is announced, according to the Steam page, it supports Linux and macOS. Ludeon Studios continuing to support Linux since 2014 <3

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Juni 2025 - 22:24

Since I see more and more cases of sequels (Borderlands, Deltarune) or new DLCs (Isaac) dropping Linux support I wanted to appreciate devs that continue to support Linux, especially for such long time. RimWorld got Linux and macOS builds in 2014, and every DLC since then has a Linux build. And it also doesn't store configs in $HOME/ <3

Why do most fullscreen games running through wine not on steam refuse to be moved with the super key to the other monitor?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Juni 2025 - 21:57

So when I run a game through steam, it seems to have no problem when i hit the super key and drag the screen from my laptop monitor to my external monitor. But when I am using other sources of wine (bottles, HGL, etc) for non-Steam games, you drag them to the other monitor and they just snap back to the laptop screen.

Steam acting as a time bomb

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Juni 2025 - 21:30

I am currently using a Dell Latitude laptop running on the most current version of Ubuntu, using the Sniper Runtime tool on TF2 and Proton 9 on Cookie Clicker. (I play no other Steam games or have any others installed currently.) Any time I play either of those games and leave my laptop on, sometimes hours later, my computer will start crashing with my cursor unable to load and the "restart" power option stalling out indefinitely until I do a hard reset. This is a fairly new computer and I still have a very generous warranty on parts for it that extends for about 3 more years. Keep in mind that the crashing happens regardless of whether or not my WiFi is on, which I always turn off immediately after using Steam. I have also explicitly disallowed it from running as often in the background using in-app settings. I don't want to have to restart my computer every single time I go offline and I don't want to lose documents because of my computer crashing. If anyone needs specs, I can tell you the pertinent details to help solve this issue faster. After browsing this sub under this flair unfruitfully several times, I am a bit desparate for solutions here.

Is there any working ways at all for reducing steam's memory usage on arch?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Juni 2025 - 21:12

Hi people! So I have gotten steam in my arch installation, but the problem is I have a low RAM laptop (7gb useable). Booting steam client uses about 1.5gb of that ram, and the actual steam game itself with the interfacing layer for proton uses less memory than the client (which is just sitting in the background too lol). As far as I can tell, all of the memory reduction options steam used to have (that I had used for a different arch install back in 2023, where i got the client usage down to like 200-400mb ram), are all gone and no longer working. like disabling the browser, running the old steam ui, etc. Is there anything that is currently functional to reduce the overall ram usage, or is it cooked.

Thanks!

Honkai Star Rail on Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Juni 2025 - 20:46

I've recently built a new PC and as part of that, am switching to Bazzite Linux as a first time user. I'm looking for a way to play HSR, and though I accept there are some risks, am looking to minimize those while having the game actually run.

From my research so far, I shouldn't use a VM of Windows, and I have basically 4 options: Adding the game into Steam and using Proton through that, using Lutris, using the Heroic Games Launcher, or using Honkers Railway. My questions are these: which of these is going to have it run the best, and also which of these is the least sketchy with the ToS?

I've seen conflicting things so far as to which I should use, and appreciate any guidance. Thank you.

Steam has integrated graphics mixed up with discrete

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Juni 2025 - 20:25

After years of getting comfortable with Linux as a work/productivity environment, I decided to take the plunge late last year and move to Linux as my daily driver/gaming OS. For a few months I was dealing with low framerates in Steam games, until I realized after installing nvtop that when I launch Steam using the "Launch using Integrated Graphics Card" it used my Radeon RX 6600 XT, and when I didn't use that option it was defaulting to my integrated CPU graphics. So now I always launch Steam with the Integrated Graphics option to actually use my card.

Is there an easy fix for this (now minor) annoyance? I'm using deb Steam on Ubuntu 24.04. Is there a configuration file I can change to specify which GPU is integrated? nvtop lists my 6600 XT as Device 0, so does Steam just assume the first device is integrated, and I would need to reverse the order in the OS?

Having constant crashes with nearly any game

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Juni 2025 - 20:13

I have a ~7 years old Samsung laptop (8GB ram, dedicated graphics) running Linux Mint 21.3 Cinnamon on it since late last year. It has been working normally ever since then, but ever since last month I've been getting a ton of crashes playing games I used to play flawlessly before, ranging from OMORI (which I can't even get past the prologue in) to vanilla Minecraft. The only game that hasn't crashed is Half Life funnily enough. I'd love to be able to fix this, any help is appreciated.

Black Myth Wukong is driving me crazy

99% of the things I have setup on Bazzite is working great and awesome! Thank you so much for the killer OS. Steam's Black Myth Wukong is driving me completely crazy and will not run on my Nvidia card. I've been searching for days to no avail.

Any advice you could give me would be great!

Baldurs gate 3 amd driver

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Juni 2025 - 19:42

Hello guys, When I play bg3 with the newest amd mesa drivers. I get some crazy visual bugs on effects mostly spells. I've read that it has to do with the 25.x series of drivers. Sadly a roll back on 23.x didn't fix the issue. Someone had the same issue or has some idea?

Return to Moria patch 1.5.2 breaks game

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Juni 2025 - 19:39

Hi all, Not sure if this is the right place. My game was working flawlessly last night through Heroic Launcher with GE Proton 10.4 on Debian 12 Stable (AMD64 system/AMD graphics). I took a break and let the game update to the latest patch and now when I try to launch, it goes straight to an Unreal Engine crash report. I've tried all the other Protons, GE or otherwise, and system-wine. Also tried to force it to run with -D3D11 on some advice from ProtonDB. Anyone else running into issues?

(Dev) Appreciation Post for the Linux Community & Future Game Plans

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Juni 2025 - 18:39

Hey Everyone, I just want to thank everybody for the feedback and reviews you gave on my last post!

It was our first Linux port of the game, and it went great, on top of that - now I know what things to improve in the future (like avoiding HOME for save etc.). I had no intetntion to make some shady marketing with that post, but people from the comments decided to support as anyways and some of them even brought the game, which was really inspiring!

In terms of our stats, Linux doesn't reach other platforms in sales, but it doesn't matter, we will continue to make updates, and they will be released in parallel. As a small developer, sometimes even a few comments is enough to make your day, and I really value them!

In the post I mentioned earlier, I stated that we will try to release our next game alongside other platforms, and not as an update but simultaneously. So promise made, promise kept, our next release will launch on Linux from day one! I hope everything will go well, and we will have enough power to cover support for all the players.

If you would like to check out the game, it's called Spectacular Team: Assemble. It's a goofy, physic-based brawler but with progression, challenges and lot's of character building variety. We are just starting to activly spread the world about it and I hope by the time it will be released, game will be really polished and joyfull experience.

If you're interested in this type of games and like what you see, wishlist us, it's not that they will make the game popular, but it will help. Also if you have time and would like to have an access to a closed beta test that will start soon, just drop me a line in Discord
