Dark Souls 3 Frame Pacing issue

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23. Juni 2025 - 08:28

After running dual boot for a few years using Windows only for gaming, decided to finally fully switch to linux. For the most part it works fine, however in Dark Souls 3 I've encountered an issue with spiking frame times at regular intervals which gets worse the more I play. Currently running the game with GE-Proton10-3 as:

DXVK_HUD=full DXVK_ASYNC=1 DXVK_FRAME_RATE=60 gamemoderun mangohud %command%

Running with Proton 9.0-4, Proton Experimental didn't improve the situation. Restarting the game completely helps for a while, but then again same thing happens. From system monitor tools, it doesn't seem like either CPU or GPU come even close to their limits both in terms of frequencies and temperatures.

RTX 3080, Ryzen 7 5800X
Arch Linux (kernel 6.15.2) + KDE

On the first screenshot it shows DXVK hud shortly after restarting the game where everything is fine. The second and third screenshot show the issue. While the average FPS is still at 57-ish, the irregular frame times really make it feel stuttery, and if anyone has any ideas on how to fix it, would hugely appreciate it.

Problem with remote filesystem browsing between Bazzite (desktop) and Steam Deck

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23. Juni 2025 - 08:12

Hey all, currently I'm having an issue trying to use KDE Connect to browse my steam deck's file system (from my Bazzite Desktop PC, communicating with SteamOS Steam Deck).

The devices are obviously paired, and every other KDE connect feature works flawlessly between the two (remote input, multimedia control, share files, etc). But if I try to open Dolphin and plainly browse the Deck's filesystem from my Bazzite desktop, I get an error that says "failed to mount filesystem: device not responding".

I was having this same issue with my android phone until I enabled the "filesystem expose" option in the KDE connect settings on my phone, and then after I enabled that option on my android, it started working perfectly. So I'm assuming perhaps my steam deck needs to enable that setting as well? But I've been looking and I don't see an option to do that anywhere.

Here's something strange about it: When I go into the Plugin Settings option within KDE Connect on my Deck, the "Remote Filesystem Browser" option is present and checkmarked. However, if I go into the KDE Connect tab from the actual KDE System Settings, and look at the plugins there, the Remote Filesystem Browser plugin doesn't even show up on the Deck side. I'm assuming that has something to do with it, but I don't know what could cause it.

I've tried messing slightly messing around with some firewall settings as well, in case that might be blocking it somehow, but I don't really know what I'm doing there so I haven't really done much with that.

Discord screen share no audio

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23. Juni 2025 - 06:18

When I share my screen on Discord, people can't hear any audio from it. It used to work several months ago, back in early February, to be exact, that was the last time I really used it.

I'm using Endeavour OS with KDE Plasma 6.4 (Wayland), but I had the same issue when I was on 6.3

And here's the thing, IT SHOULD be working. Here is what the Discord relevant sources and inputs looks like under qpwgraph

https://preview.redd.it/xfpquig6ql8f1.png?width=1103&format=png&auto=webp&s=caa6c451ff2aef8c3649fbeb25745efcf0cfd3bc

So you can see Discord is making the right audio connections, yet there is no activity at all for discord_capture when I'm streaming, the activity for discord_capture stays empty, regardless of what's playing. In this case, I'm using Audacious with the Pulseaudio output as an example.
I remember when it was working, I used to have activity on that channel when I was streaming.

I'm at a complete lost. I really need this working. I also tried webcoord, my old backup, but that's broken too since electron 33.

New KDE HDR calibration

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23. Juni 2025 - 05:16

I'm a little confused on the actual function of the second screen shown in the new calibration from KDE. Im thinking two options and leaning to the second. The first is setting to monitors SDR value. Looks ok but a little dim. The second im thinking is finding the value that matches the screens brightness in SDR. My monitor is the LG 27GS96QE WOLED and peaks at 600 nits (achieves over 1000 with MLA) and SDR brightness of 276. The value i found to match SDR with second screen is about 450 just based off of my wallpaper.

(Mint 22.1 Xfce, Late 2013 Macbook Pro) Binding of isaac: repentance runs fine for 30 seconds, then freezes

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23. Juni 2025 - 05:03

I was excited to see that I could get the game to run, considering I can't even use afterbirth+ on my mac normally with MacOS, however I was quite disappointed to find that, regardless for the most part of which Proton version I'm using, it does the same thing: works fine after I start a run, then just freezes before a minute passes. Notably, no such freeze happens on the title screen. If I try to use the scout or legacy versions of proton, it simply launches afterbirth+ (which works quite fine without any freezing). Notably again, the hotfix version only freezes the game, while any others freeze the whole computer.

Is it a hardware issue? Anyone else having this issue? I don't really know enough to formulate a reason as to why a game runs buttery smooth for under a minute then decides it doesn't wanna do that anymore. Integrity of game files verified just fine. At least I can play afterbirth+, I guess.

Could be relevant: I installed steam from the web, not realizing that it's supposed to already be in the repository according to other discussion I've seen of linux gaming. I dunno if there's a notable difference between internet and repository steam.

Dark Souls 3 modding with Mod Engine 2

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23. Juni 2025 - 04:03

Hi all,

I've been trying to mod Dark Souls 3 with Mod Engine 2 on Linux. I have successfully done it on Windows, but I can't get it to work on my Steam Deck. What I have done so far is:

  1. Download ModEngine2 (I've tried both the proton fork and the original)
  2. Extract the contents into the DARK SOULS III/Game folder
  3. Put mods in mod/ (the same mods that are working on Windows)
  4. Launch modengine2_launcher.exe

I changed my launch options to echo "%command%" | sed 's/DarkSoulsIII/modengine2_launcher" | sh to launch modengine2 by default. I've done something similar on Windows but obviously the command is different. What happens is that Dark Souls 3 launches successfully but no mods are active. The issue is (almost) definitely not my config, as I've made it very simple to only have the mod folder, and I've tried a few different proton versions. Has anyone got this to work? I can't use the original ModEngine because that would require downgrading the game and I'd lose my save in which case I'd just play exclusively on Windows.

prime on-demand + Proton Issue

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23. Juni 2025 - 03:10

Using Linux mint 22.1 xfce. Laptop with iGPU + nvidia 1050 mobile.

I'm trying to make an old game work with Proton (works with wine). While I'm on-demand mode, if I execute the game via steam, it launches but then freezes but cursor is movable.

While still on-demand mode, if I execute steam with prime-run, the game doesn't freeze by itself, but freezes the moment I alt-tab back into it. Window mode doesn't help.

If I go prime nvidia mode, it no longer freezes and works well, but not using both gpu's is not nice. Does anyone know a way around this, a way to continue using on-demand mode and not having trouble with proton stuff.

The old game is the WoW vanilla client (2004). The one of 2009 (Wotlk) has the same issue.

Thanks everone in advance. Would appriciate any input/personal experience with proton and hybrid gpu.

Trying to Run yakuza kiwami 1 with ShinRyu mod manager

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23. Juni 2025 - 02:52

I got the mods for it installed and I have to launch the game from the mod manager. When I try to run the game, it does not want to run. I am assume that because this manager is more likely made for windows it trying to look for a exe path. Since linux paths are different. This could be part of the issue. I would like to know what else could be done to possibly make this work. Here is what I have installed

  • Wine
  • proton
  • yakuza kiwami (steam version)
  • SinRyu mod manager
  • Fedora Distro

What could I be missing here?

Parsec hosting alternative for linux?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23. Juni 2025 - 02:30

So I recently swap over from windows to Kubuntu, and everything was working great for me. However the one thing that I missed was being able to host local games for my friends to play remotely with Oarsec, as the Linux version can only let you join. Now I know that there is the Steam Remote Play Together feature, but the problem with that is that it only works with games that has the Steam Remote Play Tag, and it won't work with games outside of Steam. So is there any other tool that'll let me host a split screen game remotely?

Should I upgrade my i7700k (2018-ish) cpu?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23. Juni 2025 - 02:22

I know my cpu is quite old but I don’t know how to objectively tell if it is bottlenecking any of my programs or not. Using various task manager clones, no game or program I run bottlenecks my cpu, but I feel like I could be missing something else. My games still run perfectly fine at 60fps (maximum frame rate of my 4K monitor don’t judge plz 🙏😭). Idk it just feels weird that I haven’t upgraded in quite a while but I’ve seen no drop in performance yet.

Planning dual boot: Can I reuse my existing Windows games/apps on Linux with Proton/Wine?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23. Juni 2025 - 00:18

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to set up a dual boot system with Linux (probably EndeavourOS) alongside my current Windows install. The idea is to have Windows as a fallback in case something doesn’t work on Linux, but I’d really like to try running as much as possible directly on Linux.

I already have many games (Steam, Epic... ☠️🏴) and some regular Windows apps installed on NTFS partitions. My questions are:

  • Can I reuse those existing game installations on Linux via Proton/Wine, or do I need to reinstall everything?
  • Is it possible to run them directly from NTFS, or do I really need to copy them to a native Linux filesystem?
  • For non-Steam games and general apps, how well does Wine handle using already-installed Windows files from the NTFS drive?

Any advice or experience from others who tried something similar would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Change location of steam notifications location?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23. Juni 2025 - 00:12

I asked this on r/Steam and my post was autmoatically removed for violating their terms, reviewed by a moderator, then deleted. This is the same question but with a little more added detail. I am thinking noting that I modified the steam.styles configuration file that it was against their rules or something. idk didn't know modifying a config file that has comments inside it to help you better understand some of the color options was a big deal.

I am on KDE Plasma using NixOS with steam installed through NixOS packages, my notifications are set to appear on the top right for plasma. Steam does not detect this and shows notifications on the bottom right.

This is an issue as the bottom right of my screen is where my second monitor is and I am not about to completely reverse my room to move a tiny monitor. (I would need to move my desk, computer, other desk, other computers and steam deck station, subwoofer, speakers, cable management, etc). Steam notifications will show on the second monitor then slide on to the first. This added to the fact that it's not where my notificaitons are supposed to be is extrmely annoying. I do QA work, I would like a break of QA work when I am gaming.

With steam no longer supporting styles, how can I move my notifications to the top right of my screen?

  • I checked steam settings, there is still no setting allowing you to change this behavior
  • I changed steam.styles, steam detected this and overwrote the file
  • I changed steam.styles and set it to read only, steam detected this and scummily renamed the file to steam.styles.old and created a new file
  • I changed steam.styles and set the styles folder to read only, steam detected this but was unable to do anything about it. It defaulted and still used the bottom right for notifications

Is there anything else I can do to change this minor setting that should already be a setting within the settings menu?

I tried PikaOS and my gaming experience improved significantly

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22. Juni 2025 - 23:11

Hello everyone!

Hope you are all doing good! You might have seen my previous posts about Linux Gaming as a returning user that tried Linux back in 2015-2016 and failed when gaming was non existent.

I been using Linux Mint for a year now and been having a good experience so far, some minor issues here and there.

However, I saw some distros like Nobara, Bazzite, Garuda and point in case. PikaOS.

I already had my distro hopping phase back in 2015 and now I just want to settle for something good but PikaOS picked my interest...

So! I been having some issues with Linux Mint lately, the ever present audio issues (cracking audio issues during normal desktop usage and also issues with my microphone sometimes sounding weird) my new Redragon IRE pro not working properly (they had no sound or anything) and overall sluggish feeling while playing something so I decided to take a shot at PikaOS KDE version

The installation went okay, nothing to complain and it actually went by extremely quickly now that I think about it, it offered me ways to install Steam, Lutris Heroic games launcher and others right off the bat and media codecs, I'm using Nvidia and it also installed the drivers right off the bat so that worked like a charm too, no complains here.

My complains (that have been fixed, I mean I hope they are) started when I was configuring the system or... KDE.

I set up a custom splash screen (a kitty sleeping or something IIRC) and that's it, but when I logged out and back in, it froze on that screen with no option to move or anything forcing me to force restart my PC twice, not good there..

I also found some issues while restarting and shutting down, tried to see if my Windows and LM partition were still okay and for some reason I got stuck forever in the Plymouth screen with no way out either. Also fixed it by changing the Plymouth theme to another one, that somehow magically fixed it?

Third and still present issue, no matter if I use Wayland or Xorg, for some reason it feels overall sluggish, I felt that on Linux Mint but feels worst here for some reason, like opening apps felt weirdly slow... For reference I have a GTX 1660 and a ryzen 5 CPU 4500 with 16 GB of RAM, I might need some help here with that too :p

But then, what's the good?

For starters my redragon ire pro wireless headset was working finally, I could only hear from the left side but some fiddling around in pavucontrol enabled both sides! Truly a wonder! (Even worked better than on Windows lol!)

The overall experience tho sluggish felt so damn good, I can customize so much, even more than on Linux Mint Cinnamon! Truly surprising!

The gaming experience felt slightly more fluent too! And my audio issues were fixed like 99% (maybe I was crazy but I swore I heard some crackling somewhere in there)

So if you guys are looking for an alternative for Nobara, Garuda, Bazzite or others then PikaOS is a good alternative for you! It's Debian based so that's a plus too here and there.

Cheers!

Is it possible to run pre-installed games with lutris?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22. Juni 2025 - 23:00

I'm pretty new on Linux gaming. I've installed Linux on dual boot with win10. I have some non steam games installed on windows on an ntfs formatted ssd. Can I just play them with lutris by launching their exe files with it or do I need to install them with lutris first? I tried to install a non steam game with lutris on that ssd but lutris said installing on an ntfs formatted drive could complicate things and that I should install the game on a Linux formatted drive. Is it just a warning than I can safely ignore or do I need a separate btrfs/ext4 formatted drive for this?

State of AMD for Opensuse / Linux in general

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22. Juni 2025 - 21:35

I'm looking into building my PC and I'm currently stuck on choosing the gpu. I'm 99% sure the cpu will be an AMD Ryzen™ 9 9950X3D, but I'm not sure if amd would be better than nvidia. The thing is, I’ve struggled a lot with Nvidia on my openSUSE machine, to the point where I’ve developed a habit of fixing it. Every time nvidia-smi doesn’t work, I have about 5 different ways to get it working again. Will it be the same experience with AMD? My machine will run opensuse tumbleweed + kde6 wayland with the main goal for this PC is obviously gaming, but also using blender, unreal and some ai generation.
