processing vulkan shaders takes 12+ hours

13. Juni 2024 - 03:51

same as title. This is my first time gaming with steam on linux. I downloaded warframe and it worked well 2 times. The 3rd time i opened it showed processing vulkan shaders and it took 12+ hours and even after 12 hours, it was at 59%.

Someone on reddit told me to disable pre caching shaders option on steam but there was so much stutter that i couldn't even move my character 10 metres.

Any advice?

laptop specs:

Manufacturer: Dell

processor: intel i5 6200

ram: 8gb

game is running on ssd with 100+ GB still free

Experiencing low frame rate after changing my DE

13. Juni 2024 - 03:34

Initially I was using KDE as my desktop environment, but after experiencing some bad performance on games (Hollow Knight) I decided to make the switch to Gnome, and wouldn't you know it, frame rate went up considerably, we're talking twice as many FPS, pretty much the performance I had when I played games on Windows.
But to my surprise Gnome 4 is to Gnome 3 what Windows 8 is to Windows 7, and the desktop environment I used to know has changed drastically, so I made the switch to XFCE.

XFCE is supposedly one of the most lightweight DEs out there, but the low performance I experienced on KDE returned, so I suspect the desktop environment has nothing to do with the FPS issues I'm experiencing.

My PC has an AMD processor, and i'm using vulkan-radeon drivers, not amdvlk. I made sure amdvlk wasn't installed by accident because it seems the system defaults to using it. I have all the packages that are available for mesa / vulkan radeon, including all the lib32, multi-lib stuff.

Any ideas as to how I can go about solving this? I provided all the information I think might be relevant, if there's anything that I missed let me know.

BTW, I'm using the native port of Hollow Knight. I tried launching it with Proton but performance remained the same.

ARK: Survival Evolved always freezes whole computer at about 65-66% of loading vulkan shaders

13. Juni 2024 - 02:56

I am using Proton 9.0-2, i have checked literally everything, i have benchmarked my computer to see if its my components, and turned up nothing wrong. Here's my system information:

NVIDIA RTX 3050 with driver version 535.171.04

32 GB of crucial RAM

Linux Mint 21.3

Linux Kernel 5.15.0-91-generic

Intel(R) Core(TM) 10700 @ 2.90GHZ

It runs minecraft and TF2 perfectly fine, but ARK Instantly freezes the whole computer. edit: scratch that, minecraft instantly shut down the computer twice

How might I make one controller look like two?

13. Juni 2024 - 01:33

So I play a lot of rocket league and I usually play on Windows with a PlayStation 4 controller.

About 2 months ago I ran into a glitch where my one controller would be recognized as two. Since you can do split screens, I've gotten into the habit of playing the game while driving both cars on my team.

I've now switched my workstation over to Ubuntu 24.04 and I'd like to replicate this effect. How might I do that?

Sonic Mania crashing as soon as it opens

13. Juni 2024 - 01:04

Hi guys; I am new to gaming on linux, I have been having a great time so far although I have one problem.

Sonic Mania has been freshly installed but every time I press play the window opens and instantly shuts.

Proton DB says it should be playable out of the box and I cannot find anything online to tell me if this is a common issue or not.

Could someone please suggest any fixes if known Thanks guys

(I am using GE-Proton 9-7 but have used experimental and the latest steam release but neither have solved the issue)

Modding 7D2D on Linux

12. Juni 2024 - 23:44

Hey Guys, just curious if this is possible on Linux? I tried myself and struggled even tho i made sure i installed the Proton version of the game and not the native one. I was thinking about trying Bottles to see if that would work but wondered if there is another way i am not thinking of to achieve modding in Linux. Specifically I am trying to install the Undead Legacy mod by Sub Quake.

The Finals crashing at boot

12. Juni 2024 - 23:36

I am trying to get "The Finals" to run on Fedora Linux, but I can't get past the black loading screen. When I get to the "pre compiling shaders" loading screen the whole computer freezes and the game crashes with a notification about a steam process using too much memory. Has anyone had any similar issues with memory leaks, or know anything that might help?

Launching games that have an external launcher

12. Juni 2024 - 23:28

hi all

Maybe a bit of a noob question, but on games like Baldurs gate 3 and Cyberpunk, they use an external launcher to launch the game on steam. When I try to run them, play simply goes to "Stop" for a bit then goes back to "Play". However when I add the .exe through add a non steam game it works with proton, but I am unable to get achievements. Any help? Thanks

So how do I use a Proton Log to track down a nagging game crash?

12. Juni 2024 - 22:22

Hello learned Linux folk. Newb is back, once again trying to solve a nagging steam game crash issue. And yes, I know this is not a tech forum, but guidance to 'where' would be appreciated.

Anyway, got this steam game see, and it crashes within minutes. all the time. So I used the PROTON_LOG=1 command to try and ferret out the issue. Of course, the text file is 42338 lines long, filled with a bunch of 'warn' and 'err' and plenty of other stuff to make the brains of mere mortals implode.

So...can anyone direct me on where is the place to go hereabouts to get help understanding the log and finding the culprit? The game runs better than it does in Windows, and I hate having to boot back into that pretty mess of a dumpster fire.

Thanks for reading!

Lutris old Windows game requires CD

12. Juni 2024 - 22:08

There's this game from 1997 I've been trying to install using Lutris onto my Steam Deck. It's a japanese visual novel called Xchange (specifically the original, untranslated version). I have a .img file of the disc. Back on my windows pc I extracted the contents of the .img file. Installation worked fine using the setup.exe that was in the contents of the .img file--I set wine up for windows 98 (the oldest I could go), but I couldn't get the game to run because it's telling me to insert the CD-ROM. I tried to go into wine configuration on lutris and added the extracted contents of the img as a drive and set the type to cd-rom, but to no avail. Does anyone have any clue on how to get these games that require a cdrom to work? As far as I know SteamOS can't natively mount a .img file either.

Funnily enough, initially I couldn't get the game to install on my windows 11 pc because of incompatibility, but after installing winevdm (which emulates 16-bit windows) I could install and run it just fine, without a no cd-rom error. When I tried the same thing on the steam deck though, winevdm gave me an error message that the application is 32-bit...

For the record, I'm running Lutris 0.5.17, using wine version wine-ge-8-26-x86_64 (the default).

Does anyone know how I can get the game to work?

Let's talk about Android Gaming on Linux. Has anyone gotten it to work?

12. Juni 2024 - 19:32

I don't see many people talking about mobile gaming on Linux but at this point, it is the single thing that is blocking me from making the full switch to Linux.

For those uninitiated, the emulation scene on Windows is fantastic. There are several emulators out there like LDplayer, Bluestacks, Memu, Nox, and more which offer an out-of-the-box experience when it comes to playing Android games.
I first looked into Android gaming back about 2 years ago when the Linux community was prepping the big switch to Wayland. At that point, it seemed like the only option I really had was Waydroid which I had to compile from scratch. But I didn't have the know-how outside of running it further than the boot because of how early the project was at that point.

Fast forward 3 months ago and I gave it another shot. Waydroid has made fantastic progress and installation is very easy. But it's only the installation. I still had to rely on installing a bunch of things in the backend. GAPPS, MicroG, libhoudini, and several workarounds to get certain games past the black screen. casualsnek on Github has made a fantastic script to make this very easy.

BUT I was still unable to play the games I cared about. In this case, it was Arknights and Blue Archive. I was either unable to get past the black screen or the fps was unplayable slow. So because of that, even after I fully setup my linux environment for every-day use and development, I moved back to Windows.

Fast forward to today. I'm willing to give it another shot. But before I wasted time, I wanted to ask if anyone here has had success with emulators on modern Linux.
