Changing Proton versions loses save data - Steam tModLoader Terraria

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Mai 2024 - 13:52

I updated tModLoader for Terraria recently, and with the new update, I had to start using Proton Experimental on Steam (instead of using no forced compatibility tool). The problem that came with this is that tModLoader now doesn't recognize any of my previous save data.

I can still find the save data of my Players and Worlds in ~/.local/share/Terraria/tModLoader

I guess I'm looking for where Steam games store their data when using Proton; because I think I can put my save data there and it'll work.

Debating switching to Linux, but concerned about gaming

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Mai 2024 - 13:44

Switching to Linux is something I've been debating doing for YEARS at this point. Every time I do research about it, it seems like it's more trouble than it's worth, but now I think it might be good enough for what I do. Years ago, I realized that Linux is easy enough to work with due to things like Pop!_OS that seemingly makes things more intuitive, but when it comes to gaming, I see mixed responses.

Can I game with Linux? And if so, what distro is recommended? Or is something else a factor when it comes to gaming performance? And when I ask these questions, yes, I know games CAN be played on Linux, but I'm wondering just how convenient it is. I know usually games won't work properly on release, which is fine with me. Will pretty much all Steam games work and what about Xbox Game Pass for Windows (I know that Windows is another OS, but will the app still work?)? Will Riot, EA, Epic Games, GOG, Blizzard, and Ubisoft apps work?

Also will Linux be fine for the things I do daily? I usually use Brave Browser and just use Twitch, Youtube, Twitter, Discord, browse Google for various info/forums, and check my e-mails. I also game plenty and sometimes even stream using OBS. Will Linux cause any issues for me as a newbie? I've always wanted to swap to Linux, but was afraid I wouldn't be able to handle the OS for my daily use cases.

I got a 1TB nvme drive A 34GB of ram A Ryzen 9 6900HS And a radeon RX6800s

Is Wayland ready for gaming?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Mai 2024 - 09:02

Based on my personal experience, there's still some games that trough steam deliver less performance, and some others where the performance is the same as x11, so will it improve in the future?

Dbd keeps crashing

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Mai 2024 - 08:33

My dead by daylight game keeps crashing in the middle of matches, which has caused me several time outs that have built up over time. I run Gnome fedora, and I have a 5600x cpu and an rx 6700 gpu, I’ve tried checking my internet connection, turning down graphics, verifying file integrity, switching proton versions, and contacting customer support (wasn’t helpful), however I can’t seem to find the issue. I run the game on steam and it runs really smoothly apart from the random crashing that occurs once every few games. I’m only a few months new to Linux so I’m not very good at troubleshooting it yet, does anyone know if I can somehow fix it, or at least find the root cause?

Does timeshift give 1:1 system? [Not enough karma to post on r/linux or r/archlinux so posted it here but i still think its relevant cause setting up gaming environment take many trails]

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Mai 2024 - 06:29

I use separate drive for snapshot and / partition uses ext4 file format.

I have created a snapshot and installed some packages and used for some time and restored the snapshot. while the package is installed but when i try to reinstall the same package that package didn't download but installed directly as if the build files already exist. So my question is if my system is 5 GB and I created a snapshot and installed 1 GB extra packages and I restored does the system restore to before snapshot size which is 5 GB or does the build files remain.

From my experience build files does exist while the package is uninstalled.

If time shift doesn't give 1:1 system then give any alternative applications that achieves my desired outcome.

Why is wow working on Wayland?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Mai 2024 - 01:07

Using nvidia 550.67 drivers on Opensuse tw through lutris, i haven't had any flickering even though fps isn't running at max. Did something get fixed or am i just getting lucky? I haven't put much playtime in but it's not flickering at all yet. Don't really wanna get into an m+ and have it start though. Any info or others with experience? Just trying to figure out what is going on and why it is working.

Failing to run Anno1800 in Bottles

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Mai 2024 - 01:04

Just set up my first Linux system using Pop!OS. I managed to download Ubisoft connect through Bottles and install Anno1800, but when I go to launch the game I get the following error:

"Failed to enumerate the DXGI adapter. Error Code 1202"

Looking up the error code says that I need to delete the file "engine" (https://segmentnext.com/anno-1800-no-audio-fix/) but I'm not sure if I'm able to do that through Bottles.

Again, very new to Linux and gaming in general, any help is greatly appreciated.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Mai 2024 - 00:50

I downloaded fallout new vegas and I have none of my saves. I also tried a newer game like cyberpunk 2077 and still no saves.

Is it possible to game on a windows 11 virtual machine with mid-level hardware?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Mai 2024 - 00:34

I just want to know if it's possible and how. I don't want perfect performance, but is it possible to get close to near native performance?

Replaced side monitors, now middle monitor flickering for reason I can't seem to find. Halp! D:

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Mai 2024 - 00:22
  • Ubuntu 23.10
  • GNOME 45.2
  • RTX 4070, Driver 550.78
  • X11/Xorg (no this isn't changing, I'm not going to use Wayland because that's problematic for me still)

I use my gaming rig for work, and I'm finally making good money so I decided to upgrade my side monitors, more space, and solving some weirdness I was seeing.

Before upgrade, my Left and Right monitors were craptastic Dell 1920x1080 @60hz monitors. One I had connected via HDMI-HDMI, the other DVI-DP (the monitor only had DVI or VGA yuck). The middle monitor is an Asus VG27AQ (and this has not changed), running at 2560x1440 @165hz. I had the X11 environment configured to sync to the VG27AQ monitor at 165hz (and this mostly worked well).

I then upgraded Left and Right to Gigabyte M27Q-Pro's, so have them running at 2560x1440 @165hz. Now both of them on DP, and all monitors on DP.

However, the middle monitor is now erratically flickering in ways that were not happening ever before.

I've tried (to no improvement):

  1. Replacing the DP cable
  2. Enabling/Disabling G-Sync aspects on some/all monitors
  3. Explicitly declaring refresh in X11.conf/nvidia
  4. Monitoring the system for a possible weird refresh rate change on the Asus monitor
  5. Probably some other shit I'm forgetting.

I'm really out of ideas and I don't see why this is happening. Really the only thing that has changed is swapping the Left and Right monitors, and they do not exhibit the flickering that the middle Asus one does.

Anyone have any keen ideas? This thing is pretty yucky and hoping to get it fixed. Thanks! :)
