Keep my 3070Ti or trade with 6700XT?

11. Juni 2025 - 18:53

I've been using my RTX 3070 Ti since 2022, and overall, the experience hasn't been great. I'm running a 3440x1440p monitor, and at that resolution, the 8GB of VRAM just isn't enough. Most games are limited to low or medium textures, and over time, the VRAM fills up, leading to performance degradation—stuttering, slowdowns, and eventually requiring a game restart to make things smooth again.

For example, Resident Evil 4 Remake runs fine as long as the texture setting is kept at “High (1GB).” But if the game ever touches 8GB VRAM usage, performance instantly tanks, dropping to a stuttery mess at 15–30 FPS from that point forward.

I now have the chance to trade the card for an RX 6700 XT. While I know it's a bit slower than the 3070 Ti in raw performance, the 8GB VRAM on the 3070 Ti has become a significant bottleneck in my use case. On top of that, without access to GWE tools for undervolting on Linux, the 3070 Ti draws up to 290 watts and hits 83°C under load.

People often mention that the 3070 Ti is better at ray tracing, but at 1440p on Linux, enabling RT pushes VRAM usage past 8GB and causes the same problem—so I always have it turned off. The only real advantage the card offers me is DLSS 4 support.

Given all this, does trading it for the 6700 XT sound like a reasonable move?

Missing Video Codecs when trying to play Myst (2020)

11. Juni 2025 - 18:16

I was attempting to play the 2020 remake of Myst through Steam, and there are several areas in the game that rely heavily on videos playing in-game. When I tried to play, all of these areas simply showed a white box, no video. So I did some digging, and tried a few things. From what I was able to find, it seems that it was missing codecs, and most people had them sorted out by simply using Proton-GE, so I switched to that, and still had the same issue. I downloaded ProtonTricks (from the flatpak so it was the most recent version, and also ensured my WineTricks was up to date as well), and attempted to install all the codecs shown available there. I got a few errors specifically trying to install icodecs, which are as follows:

Checksum for /home/kingjexe/.var/app/com.github.Matoking.protontricks/cache/winetricks/icodecs/codinstl.exe did not match, retrying download

SHA256 mismatch!

This is often the result of an updated package such as vcrun2019.

If you are willing to accept the risk, you can bypass this check.

Alternatively, you may use the --force option to ignore this check entirely.

Continue anyway?

This gave me a Yes and No option, so I chose Yes, but I was ultimately met with

Note: command cabextract -q -d /mnt/23f12f95-a228-4225-b387-247590c36c86/SteamLibrary/steamapps/compatdata/1255560/pfx/dosdevices/c:/windows/temp/codinstl/ /home/kingjexe/.var/app/com.github.Matoking.protontricks/cache/winetricks/icodecs/codinstl.exe returned status 1. Aborting.

At this point I'm not sure what else to do. Even after everything I still have white boxes where there should be video. I unfortunately just don't have enough knowledge to figure out what exactly is going wrong and what to fix.

Ways to find a game bottleneck when it doesn't seem to be cpu or gpu?

11. Juni 2025 - 17:41

I'm a big fan of "the last spell", but on my current machine the game runs fairly poorly (https://steamcommunity.com/app/1105670/discussions/1/601903412169188006/). Oddly, my machine should be more than capable of running the game very well, based on anecdotes from other players with much weaker PCs by raw stats.

This makes me curious; are there good, comprehensive ways to profile or measure for the load on other parts of my PC (e.g. motherboard busses, ram read/write) that could show me my true bottleneck?

This isn't a strictly Linux-specific post, but I'm running mostly on Linux nowadays.

Gaming issues as a linux begginer

11. Juni 2025 - 16:08

Hey all,
I switched to Linux Mint about 3 hours ago. After some setup, I tried gaming. Steam had issues but I fixed those. However, when I launched CS2:

  • My 1440x1080p 180Hz resolution isn’t working properly.
  • FPS is awful — around 40fps, while on Windows I used to get 150+.

I’ve linked my neofetch for anyone who wants my PC specs.

I could run Minecraft at 1000fps on Linux (Windows was 500fps), so I thought gaming would be fine, but clearly not with CS2.

Anyone faced this? How do I fix resolution and get decent FPS on Linux Mint?

Thanks!

EDIT:

I ran the game natively and I will now try the newest proton.

Resolution issues seem to be due to windows forcing it somehow and my monitor cant support it? Im not sure, chatgpt talk :D.

Doom not launching anymore from Steam

11. Juni 2025 - 14:26

I’m not really an expert with computers, and I have recently downloaded Linux Asahi Fedora to play Doom. The game stopped launching entirely after I changed some video settings from game settings (I believe it could be a problem with Vulkan). Anyone knows how to fix this? (I’m on a MacBook Air 2020 M1 btw). I have tried verifying game files, updating my Os and even adding strings of code to the launcher, but now I have no idea what to do.

War thunder+OBS

11. Juni 2025 - 14:10

I recently switched to Linux from window. I want to have something like Nvidia instant reply. Looks like OBS is the only choice. OBS doesn’t seem to recognize war thunder. When I do a recap the screen is black (audio works great). The only solution I have found is to use window capture (Pipewire) but the quality isn’t good. ( I need the quality to be at least decent I am a content creator.

Laptop GPU/CPU

11. Juni 2025 - 13:38

Since my nvidia 1650 comes now to a point, where games doesnt run very smooth, i will buy a new gaming laptop. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find a reasonably priced laptop with an AMD GPU. So that only leaves nvidia. How noticeable is the difference between an RTX 4070 and an RTX 4080? I would like to keep the laptop under 1500€ if possible. However, the screen should already be 17", as I also want to work with it.

Many of the games I currently play run on Unreal Engine 5, if that can contribute to a better recommendation...

Which Linux Distro. Should I Use?

11. Juni 2025 - 11:24

Hi there! I was thinking about switching to Linux on my main Desktop computer, as I really enjoy it on my laptop. I’ve become increasingly frustrated with Microsoft’s use of AI and their bloated bullshit. But, I had a few questions before I potentially make a final decision.

  1. If I do switch decide to switch, what Linux Distribution would you recommend to a gamer? I play a lot of games, everything from Minecraft, ROBLOX, Final Fantasy XIV Online, VRChat (with VirtualDesktop + Oculus Quest 3S). I play other games as well, such as Elden Ring, Fortnite and Baldurs Gate 3.

  2. In the event I do switch to Linux, would I be losing out on anything? Like, in terms of functionality or performance. I currently use Windows 11 LTSC, which my friend helped me switch to after experiencing increasing frustrations with Windows 10.

  3. Is the software I have compatible with Linux or will I encounter any issues with my hardware/software on Linux? My computer specs are:

Operating System: Microsoft Windows 11 LTSC CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D 8-Core Processor GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Storage: WD_BLACK 1TB SN770 NVMe Motherboard: Gigabyte B650 EAGLE AX

If you guys need any more information or need me to provide anything else to help me make a decision, I can gladly provide it.

UPDATE- Has anyone had any success using two GPUs?

11. Juni 2025 - 09:56

https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/1l4r4vh/has_anyone_had_any_success_using_two_gpus/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

A few days ago I posted this thread, and I figured it out. (This is only for Nvidia GPUs, as I believe the Mesa drivers allow this to work much easier)

Since then, I've tried making multiple virtual displays, to no avail. Until I ordered a dummy HDMI plug, and I edited my Xorg conf to ONLY include my secondary GPU (the one not connected to the real display)

Section "Device" Identifier "Device0" Driver "nvidia" VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation" BoardName "NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090" BusID "PCI:14:0:0" EndSection

Then, I disabled the dummy display under the XFCE4 settings. And boom; it works. Desktop usage is a little bit less smooth; but in gaming there is only a very slight input latency which is totally workable.

Then Nvidia picked it up as a PRIME display, which I thought is normally only for usage with integrated GPUs, turns out it even works on two dedicated GPUs!

Steam defaults games to 60Hz

11. Juni 2025 - 09:54

Hello, I have just installed Fedora 42KDE with Wayland and the latest nvidia drivers 575.57 i think. The thing is, after i installed the drivers, my external monitor couldn't do 1080p 144hz anymore and I had to go to 120Hz, not much of an issue. The thing is that in games that dont have a refresh rate setting, the default refresh rate in games for steam seems to be 60Hz and I know this by using mangohud and enabling vsync in game and seeing the fps drop to 58-60. The thing is, the laptop refresh rate seems fine, but if i enable vsync on the laptop screen it still goes to 58-60 fps, weird (on games without refresh rate setting). I tried using gamescope in steam launch arguments but no game starts after using gamescope %command% or gamescope -r 120 -- %command% or smth like that. I am using proton ge 10.4 but i tried launch args with proton 9 and beta 10. Any idea what I can do or try? Thank you!
