Exact gamescope command for FSR Ultra Quality mode on a 1080p monitor?

29. April 2024 - 01:44

Hey all, I'm really sorry for this absolutely braindead question. I really tried to figure this out on my own, but for some reason, the way that gamescope commands are formatted just absolutely confuse my brain. I've been using Linux since 2015, and I've never had a problem understanding how to tailor example commands to my needs before, so this is really embarrassing for me, and I'm really sorry to waste peoples' time here, but could somebody please post the exact command to run a game that would be 1080p natively and have the FSR "Ultra Quality Mode" applied to it to upscale it back to 1080p?

I tried looking for exact command examples, but everything I've seen lists the input resolution at either 1440p or 4K. Any help would be extremely appreciated, and I'm sorry for posting this, as I really didn't want to waste peoples' time, but maybe somebody can find this post in the future if they have the same resolution needs as I do.

How do you turn off gsync system wide?

29. April 2024 - 00:02

My input latency in games are not feeling accurate. I found out how to turn off the compositor in X11, but while it's almost near perfect to windows there is still some very slight input lag. I believe it's either gsync or freesync I don't know if those are turned on automatically or something, but usually those have some slight input lag.

How would I fix this graphical issue?

28. April 2024 - 23:00

I just bought Mega Man 11 on Steam, yet for some reason, most of the robots (including Mega Man), have missing textures. I've tried Proton Experimental, 9, and 8, yet this issue still remains. Does anyone know any fixes or have any recommendations?

Can you help

28. April 2024 - 21:45

I'm going to build a PC but I'm going to use it only for emulation (including PS3) and playing older boxed games with no online steam activation, etc. (I really hate digital distribution, the exceptions are gog and icho) and the hardware will have Windows 8 and Linux (I don't know which one. choose at the beginning) what components do you recommend for emulation (including PS3), playing old games (95% from before 2015) and indie games and, above all, which Linux to choose next to Windows 8, thanks in advance

Worth swapping for a gamer?

28. April 2024 - 20:24

I have a razer blade 14 with 4070 gpu, i game mainly on it, I mix old titles and new titles. I dont play online games anymore, I mainly play rips etc and if the games really good I tend to buy on steam.

Just wondering if I am the type of person who should switch to linux? I have a steamdeck so I have some experience with linux gaming etc and know I did strugle tonget some titles working.

I have 2 reasons I want to seitch.

  1. I sold my mac and kinda miss messing around in a new OS.
  2. Windows really annoys me...

Anything Microsoft pisses me off.. like I could not log into my laptop because all of a sudden my pin wouldnt work and I kept getting an error.. like so much bloatware on windows, my other dedicated gaming PC has ghost spectre on it to get rid of some of the bloat.

What ya guys thinking? Worth fully swapping or just making a bootable drive?

Also can I make a dual boot without partition as I only have single 4tb drive

UHD630 + NVIDIA Quadro RTX 5000 (Turing) Wayland issue

28. April 2024 - 19:57

I have a problem with my laptop config. Accordingly - when laptop is running UI via Intel iGPU (KDE or GNOME) or running a game through XWayland - it does have always half the refresh rate... I mean, UI with VRR renders at 48-84 fps, games with V-Sync run at 72-84 fps max and if I'll set the larger framerate, it extremely stutters and lose frames.

I'm running Fedora 40; in 39 release, Wayland worked pretty well with environment variables such as KWIN_DRM_NO_AMS=1 and KWIN_FORCE_SW_CURSOR=1, but since KDE 6 it does not work.

Should I wait for Explicit Sync patches in plasmashell/mutter/xwayland, or fix it in other way?

I'm using now X11 with enforced NVIDIA-only GPU, but it is not the thing I want - I'm using also laptop on battery and NVIDIA GPU is power-hungry.

Ace Combat 7 is an extremely stuttery mess in Linux

28. April 2024 - 19:52

I'll be as concise and descriptive as possible with this issue. I've tried to go fully Linux about a few weeks ago, and ended up abandoning this and returning to Windows 11 due to a single game having issues.

Now, to preface, Ace Combat 7 is listed on ProtonDB as Platinum, with everyone saying that the game works and runs smoothly out the box. I personally don't play the singleplayer campaign (though I should, heard it's good) as I was gifted the game by a person I'm real good friends with, and we just play multiplayer lobbies together.

However, whenever I would try to play Ace Combat 7 multiplayer on Linux, the game ends up having stutters so bad and frequent that it's unplayable. It's smooth as butter on Windows...

I have attempted various solutions through distro hopping, DE hopping, etc. (courtesy of GloriousEggroll's Discord and the knowledgeable people there):

  • Arch (April 2024 rolling release), Fedora 40, both Wayland.
  • Zen 6.8.5 kernel, also tried stock 6.8.5 kernel
  • Tried both GNOME and KDE. Last attempts were trying to run AC7 in Gamescope.
  • Game was on a Btrfs partition, said drive is an NVMe SSD. Drive is mounted with default mounting parameters.
  • Tried `gamemoderun %command%`.
  • Tried different Proton versions, ranging from 7, 8.0-5, and even Experimental, as well as Proton-GE.
  • Running latest Mesa drivers, do not specifically remember what version.
  • Ensured RADV is installed and used instead of AMDVLK.
  • Disabled shader pre-caching through Steam, and through an entry in the game's settings config stored in the environment's %AppData%
  • Used CoreCtrl to ensure both CPU and GPU are always running on High Performance mode
  • Tried running AC7 with just my primary monitor plugged in to my GPU.

Of note, Gamescope did reduce the stuttering some, and so did trying to run AC7 on Fedora 40 with GNOME. I've changed graphic settings from Ultra to Low, and it had no effect on my stuttering.

Hardware:

  1. Ryzen 7 5800X3D
  2. Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 6800 XT
  3. 32GB DDR4-3600 RAM
  4. Gigabyte Aorus X570 Elite mobo
  5. LG 32" 1440p 165Hz monitor (primary)
  6. Samsung Odyssey G5 27" 1440p 144hz monitor (secondary)
  7. Acer Nitro 32" 1080p 240Hz monitor (tertiary)
  • This is why I stick to Wayland as much as possible - due to my multimonitor setup

Any leads and assistance will be appreciated. I'm currently in the process of setting up dual boot with Linux Mint and Windows 11, if anyone wants Proton logs, I will migrate AC7 again and provide upon request.

Bazzite impressions/review, and why I'm switching away (for now).

28. April 2024 - 19:40

Just wanted to leave my quick thoughts/review after using Bazzite for a week, and why I'm ultimately not sticking with it yet.

I'm on a full AMD system (Ryzen 5600 + RX 5700XT). Coming from EndeavourOS and Windows 11.

Bazzite does get a lot right here, and I was very impressed when I first installed it. It includes a lot of things that are otherwise just annoying to setup in immutable distros in my experience, and that made getting up and going with games and media consumption a breeze. Things like media codecs that I'd want in Fedora Kionite are there by default instead of requiring me to install them myself, goverlay + mangohud are there, AMD overclock/undervolt support is enabled and has an app to configure with no further setup required, etc. It has made Bazzite probably the best immutable distro I've tried so far in terms of functionality.

KDE 6 works well and I had no major issues that were the fault of the distro itself in that regard. Lots of great upgrades from 5.27, no wayland issues, etc.

Package management is fairly simple, and the welcome tool to help you setup some basics is nice to have. I also really love the inclusion of the ujust command to make doing a lot of general tasks much easier and user friendly.

I love that this works with secure boot and TPM disk decryption without too much hassle. This is honsetly the primary reason why I haven't been able to use Nobara and why I initally considered bazzite. I had to do a bit of tinkering to figure out how exactly to get my keys to work as it didn't work out of the box, which was an annoying process, but once it was setup there were no issues. They outline steps on their github for secure boot, but not for auto decryption. Could be good to see that included, or for it to even be done automatically if possible.

On the bad side though, I've ran into just a few too many annoyances to want to stick with this.

Firefox appears to not work with the plasma-browser-integration addon due to being a flatpak, so my system would constantly attempt to turn off the display while watching videos. This is fixable, but annoying and shouldn't be an issue with the out of the box browser install.

Sunshine + Moonlight is something I use quite often, and I had a ton of issues with getting this to work. It's included in the welcome tool but the first 2 installs I did of bazzite (yes I've reinstalled multiple times trying to get stuff to work), it just didn't want to auto start on boot. It was being installed for the user instead of the system I think. Sometimes it just wouldn't install right at all and I had to reinstall it a few times. The flatpak version (which I know is not recommended) also didn't want to work.

The ujust command has a tool for setting up sunshine that wasn't very helpful for this either. Once I found a way to fix that and get the systemd service to enable, I realized that it was only going to start when I logged in, making it functionally worthless when I'm...away from my computer lol. There's probably a great way to fix this, but I'm not experienced with it and I've not had these issues getting it setup on other systems.

The best I could do in the couple hours I looked at it, is to set my system to auto login, then lock itself again right after to get the service to start. And even then it still doesn't work if my screens turn off, neither will VNC. Again there's probably a better solution for this, but it's a bunch of fooling around I don't want to do.

If there's any suggestions in the comments for fixes on this then I'm all ears!

My steam download speeds are halved from my EndeavourOS and my windows installs for seemingly no reason. In the ujust command there's a steam download fix that adds the little cfg file to disable http2 and stuff, which is nice to see that I don't have to do that manually like I normally do. But my downloads are still slower no matter what else I did. Nothing else was effected.

I had to use a workaround I found online to change the SDDM wallpaper. Otherwise you cannot change this out of the box and are stuck with whatever the default is. This is I believe an issue with a few immutable distros, but still annoying none the less and I would like to see a fix out of the box. Especially where the default SDDM wallpaper is ugly as shit and doesn't match the desktop default wallpaper in the slighest lol.

I could not for the life of me get the wallpaper engine plugin to work, I have no idea why. I think it may have been disabled with the latest release?

Discord screen sharing with the bundled x11 bridge just...didn't function for me. The tool pops up and I can select what I'd want to share, but no matter what I tried folks in my calls couldn't see anything. This could be a discord issue but it worked last time I tried it in endeavourOS so I don't know what the deal is here. As well, my camera would take upwards of 30 entire seconds after me toggling it, to show up in the call. Not fun.

A lot of my problems here are definitely due to my inexperience with immutable distros and best practices. I'm sure there are a lot of fixes, some of which I'll be informed about in the comments. And TBH, I didn't even really get a chance to try all my apps/workflows in Bazzite. There could be more good sides and downsides here, I know a lot of folks love this distro. However, I used it for the week and just had too many issues with things I need, so even if everything else was flawless it wouldn't change that I can't use it. I just want to install my distro and go, and as far as that's concerned, Bazzite isn't quite there yet.

If my gripes are ever addressed somehow then I can see bazzite being basically perfect for me. Right now it's pretty much 90% of the way there. Mostly usable, but small issues bring the experience down and troubleshooting isn't as straight forward as I'd like.

Anecdote for thin and light laptops and gaming on windows vs linux

28. April 2024 - 18:33

Hello! I've had my laptop, an asus zenbook ux434 for around 4 years. It's not very powerful. It's got a 10th gen i7, 16 gb of ram and a 10W mx250, all in a 14 inch package. Ever since I've gotten it, any game that I played, from the least demanding, like minecraft or fallout 3, to the more demanding ones (not current gen, more like mid to late 2010's), like gta 5 or wolfenstein 2, they'd all run fine, then the gpu would go down to 300mhz after like 2 minutes and the game would become unplayable, constantly toggling between around 1000mhz and 300mhz, sometimes down to 100mhz(!!). This was on Windows. I tried everything, throttlestop to limit the cpu to an abysmal 7W to give the gpu more cooling room, drivers, gpu tweak, debloating the asus apps. The temperatures on the gpu were fine, they'd never breach 75C, yet for some reason it would just throttle like crazy.

Unrelated, I had to install linux to get some software that I needed since WSL was acting up. I decided to install fallout 3, and low and behold, it could run for hours, hover between 75 and 80C on the cpu or gpu, without any throttling or frame dips for entire hours. With heating on in my room too, so very respectable. Since then, I've literally only gamed on linux because it's my only choice if I want to play almost ANY game without massive throttling. And I get why they did that on Windows, 75C seems like a good target for a thin and light, but they definitely could've done a better job that to constantly switch betwen around 1000mhz and 300 on the gpu. I've played linux games on this laptop for close to three years now thanks to how easy lutris and steam are to use and I've had no issues, temperatures are very stable. I'd be happy to hear stories from other people who have thin and light laptops.

How to make Steam Input controls have top priority or override the rules in use by QJoyPad ??

28. April 2024 - 18:20

So I'm playing with the new Candy Con wireless PC controller.. the program qJoyPad got the controller to function as a mouse no problem which is what i was looking for; but if i start a game on Steam the controller wont go into the configuration for said game, the qjoypad configuration remains and it's still just acting as a mouse.. is there any way to make the qjoypad config take a back seat relative to the Steam Input configuration without closing the program qJoyPad??
