Horizon Zero Dawn - The game stutters practically every second

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30 Apr 2024 - 11:37am

I've been having major problems running this game on Fedora 40.

Here are my specs

The game stutters every second and freezes every 5-10 seconds. I tried using different versions of proton, Steam stable and beta client , but to no avail. And when you launch the game you can see logos flickering.

I play on an external Dell 27' 2k monitor.

LostLight PC PortProton/Steam

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30 Apr 2024 - 11:17am

Hi, I am trying to get Lost Light PC working on my HP Elitebook 840 G3.

CPU: i5-6300U
GPU: Intel HD 520
RAM: 8GB
Distro: Arch btw

both on PortProton(Flatpak) & Steam the installation goes fine and game starts as well. The issues comes when on the main menu I click on the enter shelter or try to login (PortProton), in steam I get an error when I try to login. The Steam error I think is because steam doesn't allow external logins maybe and for the crashing issue my guess it's related to the WM/DE but I am not sure. Here are the logs of PortProton.

Primary monitor turns off when launching TF2

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30 Apr 2024 - 6:55am

So when trying to launch Team Fortress 2 my main monitor turns off and my second monitor glitches out only having half of it being usable. I have to restart the PC entirely to make the second monitor usable enough to then enable the primary monitor in the settings.

I am running Garuda linux with KDE 6 and x11

When launching the game on “Legacy OpenGL” this doesn’t happen. Any ideas what it might be? Im kind of a noob and i found a work around but im curious what might have caused that.

Why does Nvidia have a harder time with vkd3d games?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30 Apr 2024 - 5:45am

I hear that with a lot of D3D12 titles run through VKD3D on the Nvidia proprietary driver (like Forza, Horizon Forbidden West, Ratchet & Clank, etc.) suffer from bugs, such as Xid errors after a certain amount of playtime and crashes in specific scenarios (like Ratchet & Clank crashing with medium textures if DirectStorage is enabled).

Why is this?

Weird Street Fighter 6 Freezing Issue

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30 Apr 2024 - 5:35am

The game runs perfectly fine most of the time, but I noticed when I do either Dhalsim's back heavy kick or tech a throw, the game freezes and becomes unresponsive. Everything runs fine and plays normally besides that.

So far I tried reinstalling the game, a few different Proton versions, and updated my drivers in that time. I tried looking on Protondb and other threads and I haven't seen anyone have this kind of issue before.

I'm on Arch, have an Arc A770 GPU, and run the game on GE Proton 9.4.

Steamtinkerlaunch + replacer mods that don't use F4SE and then this. It takes over a half an hour just to run the game. Sometimes it just black screens and crashes. Sometimes that half hour results in a smooth, crash free modded gameplay. But nobody got time to wait over half an hour or more to play a video game with a gamble on whether it's gonna run or not. Are there any fixes to this? Pretty sure this is a bug. I've tried the PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 launch command but am still greeted by a pretty lengthy launch time.

I Rented Out A Movie Theatre (Again) and Used my Steam Deck to Play Co-Op games!

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30 Apr 2024 - 2:58am

Yes! I am that crazy lad who rented out a movie theatre last year for my graduation party with the Steam Deck! (on r/SteamDeck)

This time, I decided to do the same thing except a bit bigger and beyond.

As you can see, I have EIGHT PLAYER WIRELESS CO-OP working! No, this is not magic, but a ton of thinking and planning on my part to get this working.

This is done by using an external Bluetooth 5.3 Adapter alongside an Xbox Wireless Adapter. To make this simple, this would split the connections to have 4 controllers that are far away in range using Bluetooth, and the other half using 2.4GHz that the Xbox Wireless Adapter uses.

I used 4 off brand Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers (that were amazingly better than the authentic Pro Controllers) to connect to the Bluetooth Adapter, and used 4 Xbox Controllers to connect to the wireless adapter.

What included in my rental was 4 hours of gaming, unlimited popcorn and drinks by the theatre, can bring food from the outside, all under $1000.

Granted, this varies on location for how much theatre rentals can be, so depending on your cost of living is in your area, it could be higher or just about the same!

So, you may ask “how the **** did you get 8 player co-op working?!?!”

Great question.

This was done by having Windows and SteamOS dual booted on my Deck, which I used a program on Windows called “NucleusCo-Op” that lets you basically turn any game into a splitscreen title.

After we did Minecraft and BOII CoOp, I had to (no pun intended) switch over to SteamOS to play the Switch games. Would love to see a port of NucleusCoOp on Linux so I can get rid of Windows DualBoot permanently!

I did a lot of effort to get this all set up and working in less than a month, as I pretty much planned this last minute.

As you can see with the 8 player Minecraft, it looks like old console Minecraft with its visuals and HUD/UI!

This is because of a great mod called “Legacy4J” which literally accurately recreates console Minecraft if it were continued today. It even has native controller support built into it, even for the Steam Deck!

The Developer of the Mod, Wilyicaro, helped to make this work with NucleusCoOp!

Shoutout to him, he’s an amazing man, as he did all of this less than a week to get it working for me.

Same goes with Call of Duty: Black Ops II, as I also used NucleusCoOp for that.

So, how did it all run?

Minecraft with a TON of performance mods, ran at a perfect 60fps the entire time, with each instance having 6 chunks to save on memory.

COD BOII with all of the lowest graphical settings, ran at 60fps in all of the instances.

It’s truly amazing, considering I was using Windows, a non-supported platform for the Steam Deck besides a new driver about 8-12 months, with such incredible graphical performance.

And yes, as you can see with later images, I also emulated Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and held a mega tourney all emulated on the Steam Deck as well with flawless performance.

I, at my own birthday party against really good players, somehow managed to win despite the fact at my graduation party last year, I lost in the first round LOL. Snake for the win, baby!

You may ask, “Is this practical? Why not use a gaming PC to do all of this?”

Amazingly, I would consider this to be more practical than using a gaming PC because of its size.

I fit all of the 8 controllers I had, along with my Steam Deck, its dock that had a USB hub connected to two USB extenders of the adapters, fit in a small tiny plastic tub.

With a gaming PC, have fun hauling a large 40lb metal box around and take a lot of time to attempt to set up. Steam Deck was literally just plug and play with the projector supporting HDMI!

The Steam Deck is clearly powerful enough to be able to handle what I’ve done, with having 8 player splitscreen AND Nintendo Switch emulation off of one singular device.

It’s genuinely amazing.

Anyhow, I hope this post inspires someone to do what I did, to rent out a movie theatre and use their Deck to play games with good lads and have a ton of fun, because it’s worth it!

Why do games run better on atch based systems than debian based ones? (In my expierence)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30 Apr 2024 - 2:58am

Hi, I am very new to linux and linux gaming, I have used a few distros based on debian and arch. Mostly mint, popos and manjaro. I've noticed that games run quite better on manjaro than they do on popos or mint. I am not sure if there are settings I need to change on ubuntu/debian based systems or need to install certain drivers, so if I'm doing something wrong please just tell me. I like all the distros I have used, so it doesn't really bother me if I have to stick to arch based distros to have a better gaming expierence. I am just curious that is all.

Also I haven't used debian or arch in of itselves meither have I used non arch or debian based distros. So, I'm not saying arch is best for gaming gaming. It's just so far arch has been better for me personally than debian/ubuntu.

NFSU 2 + Lutris issue

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30 Apr 2024 - 12:37am

Hello guys!

I've managed to successfully install NFSU2 using Lutris. I ran the patches, the nocd fix and stuff but I cannot run it using Lutris interface/shortcut. Although if I go into the directory and start the game using "$HOME/.local/share/lutris/runners/wine/wine-ge-8-26-x86_64/bin/wine SPEED2.exe" it works flawlessly.

Here is the log for it. Does anyone know how do I modify the "lutris:rungame" command to get it running properly?

Big Picture Mode Box

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30 Apr 2024 - 12:03am

I’m looking to build a living room PC that will be used exclusively for Steam gaming. Last week, I was putting everything together with Windows in mind, before I stumbled a comment about gaming in Linux.

Now, I’m familiar with gaming on Linux, and that Valve had been investing in the area, but I hadn’t heard of Proton, so I never even considered this as an option. To discover that Linux can absolutely replace Windows for a pure gaming configuration was an exciting revelation.

I use a Mac for everything, except my other PC which runs Windows. That PC is used exclusively for VR sim racing, but Windows is a total burden. Unfortunately, I don’t think I can ditch Windows for that application just yet (from what I’m reading), but maybe this new experiment can motivate me. But I digress.

I’d like to think I have pretty simple requirements; I’m not a hardcore gamer, and do single player only (for the most part). That said, I am a stickler for the overall experience to be as smooth as possible. My goal is to have this Steam box replicate a console experience in the way it powers up. I understand that Quick Resume simply isn’t going to happen, and I’ve made peace with that; but if I can easily put this system to sleep and wake it to Big Picture Mode within seconds I’ll be a happy person.

I haven’t bought any hardware yet, so I can cater my purchases with Linux in mind. From what I’m reading, an AMD GPU is the way (likely will grab a RX 7800 XT), and coupled with a Ryzen 7600; but what about motherboard BIOS? Is B650 going to be pain free? Anything else I’m failing to consider? I’ll be using an “8 bit do” wireless ultimate (2.4 USB receiver) - if I can wake the system via the controller, that would be perfect. The less I need to pickup the keyboard/mouse, the better.

Basically, I’m trying to closely replicate a console experience rather than a PC one. I’d like this to not feel like I’m using a computer hooked up to my TV wherever possible. So, booting straight to Big Picture Mode.

For games, it’s pretty varied. There’s AAA titles such as Cyberpunk, Witcher 3, Fallout 4, Diablo 4, RDR2 - but I’d also like to dabble with more native indie releases for Linux, as well as emulation. Again, I don’t do competitive online gaming (I know anti-cheat precludes Linux). I’d also like to be able to play these at 4K 120hz as my TV supports that (GPU dependent). I’ve checked ProtonDB and that fills me with confidence, but I also understand that some games may require an initial configuration, which I’m okay going when needed.

From what I’m reading, SteamOS probably isn’t going to be ideal as it’s not as flexible; instead I’ll want to opt for a proper Linux distribution such as Arch or Ubuntu. How about the dedicated “gaming” distros?

Am I missing anything? Is this a pipe dream or should I stick with Windows? I am comfortable with UNIX to a degree (probably more than I am with Windows) but I wouldn’t consider myself an expert.

If anyone has similar use cases that they’d like to share, please do! Always looking to be inspired but what others do. Thank you!

TL;DR want to build a living room “Steam console” using Linux.

Enshrouded Dedicated Server

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 29 Apr 2024 - 9:32pm

I am currently running a server for Enshrouded for a group of 6-8, and have read several people parrot the same thing that running the server through Proton instead of Wine performs much better.

My problem is, I can not find any documentation on using Proton? I can't even figure out how to install it, though I've seen some mentions that it's built into steam.

Right now to start the server I just use /usr/bin/wine64 /serverexedirectory

The platform is Debian 12.

Can anyone shed any light on this?
