does my drive format matter?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 13 Nov 2025 - 6:46pm

hello fine people or r/linux_gaming

today i am reaching out to hopefully solve a problem i am having, so i recently move from windows to linux(pop! os) and have brought over a bunch of my pirated games from it. i also downloaded this "heroic game launcher(which has wine/proton built in)" and gave it all of the .exe files for the games.

now when i click to play the games, if from unity. i will get a quick unity crash handler/reporter thingy screen and the game will shut, i think this is because i have yet to re-format the drive these games are on from ntfs/nfts or whatever to whatever linux uses. now i can't really do that because all the data on it will get deleted i cant find my external hard drive, dont have space on my other drive so im asking just to be sure before thinking of a way to do this, is this certainly the problem? or could it be something/ and something else?

please dont flame me if its a obvious problem, i dont know how linux works

follow up(even tho i havent posted this yet) : i tried moving said game files from the ntfs drive to the drive i installed linux on, did absolutely nothing.

this is really the only log i could find to share :

Developing a game in Linux! It's called FOREHEAD CHIP ... made with Godot and first-class Linux support

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 13 Nov 2025 - 5:52pm

Interesting tidbit I released an early access game on Steam exclusively on Linux at first.... was the first person crazy enough to do that... not sure if anyone else has since

Working on a new game: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2171910/Forehead_Chip/ Be sure to wishlist it, please! Really helps it from being drowned out.

I use all opensource tools within Linux to make it. No AI. Ask anything if you're curious!

Steam not using 9070 XT when launching Hogwarts Legacy (Fedora 43)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 13 Nov 2025 - 5:22pm

Here is some context:

OS: Fedora Linux 43 (KDE Plasma Desktop Edition) x86_64
Kernel: Linux 6.17.1-300.fc43.x86_64
DE: KDE Plasma 6.5.2
WM: KWin (Wayland)
CPU: 12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-12700K (20) @ 5.00 GHz
GPU 1: AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT [Discrete]
GPU 2: Intel UHD Graphics 770 @ 1.50 GHz [Integrated]

Some commands and their outputs:

DRI_PRIME=1 glxinfo | grep "OpenGL renderer" OpenGL renderer string: Mesa Intel(R) UHD Graphics 770 (ADL-S GT1) DRI_PRIME=0 glxinfo | grep "OpenGL renderer" OpenGL renderer string: AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT (radeonsi, gfx1201, LLVM 21.1.4, DRM 3.64, 6.17.1-300.fc43.x86_6 4)

I tried launching steam with DRI_PRIME=0 but in the logs I can see errors about an invalid DRI_PRIME value:

Whenever I launch Hogwarts legacy from steam, it processes the Vulkan Shaders, launches and then after the epilepsy warning it shows a black screen with high GPU usage, then once the menu loads it's a laggy mess and is using around 1% of the GPU, the same in game with like 3 FPS.

I'm not really sure what I'm doing wrong here.

I'm now finally in.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 13 Nov 2025 - 5:20pm

Yesterday I finally switched from Win 11 to Kubuntu and have straight 25-30 more fps in Borderlands 4. Today I try Monster Hunter Wilds.

Still unsure to change later to SteamOS but for now I have much to learn.

Help an old fart finally make the switch to Linux ^^

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 13 Nov 2025 - 4:52pm

Hello, friends

I'm an old gamer that has been playing mostly on Windows all my life. And with age Congress wisdom: I am definitely ready for switching my gaming into Linux.

For this goal, I'm currently building an AMD desktop, with these specs:

7800X3D 9070XT 64GB 6400 DDR5 RAM Asrock B850 Livemixer WiFi 2TB nvme, 4TB SATA SSD, 8TB HD

So, I need your guidance in making sure this transition is as smooth as possible. Some things are also relevant:

  • I tried gaming on Linux some 8 years ago, and it didn't work well (mostly myself to blame, since I had just moved abroad and I didn't have a lot of time and mental bandwidth to invest in learning).

  • I have a Steam Deck and holy crap I love the thing. Fiddling with it made me more confident to make the move.

  • I play mostly single player games, so I don't need to worry about anti-cheat kernel shenanigans.

  • I love emulation, and I need it to work well in this new setup.

  • This will be mainly a gaming/media rig plugged into my family's TV, but having some productivity capabilities is definitely a plus.

My questions:

Q1 - Distro. I know this is a hot topic, but please share with me what you are using and/or what you think would be a good fit for me. I'm currently thinking about Nobara or Bazzite, but open and willing to experiment.

Q2 - AMD hardware. I know Nvidia drivers can be finicky in Linux. What about AMD ones? Anything in my specs above can cause me some issues?

Q3 - Dual Boot. Should I even bother?

Q4 - Any transition traps I should avoid, or newbie mistakes I should consider?

Appreciate any input and experiences you are willing to share!

Valve should raise more awareness about Linux anti-cheat support — most devs still don’t know!

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 13 Nov 2025 - 4:47pm

Ever since Proton and the Steam Deck came around, Linux gaming’s gotten way better.

The funny thing is, anti-cheat systems like EAC and BattlEye already work on Linux through Proton — but a lot of developers don’t even realize that!

I’ve seen this firsthand. I use Linux as my main OS, and I’ve tried running games like CRSED: F.O.A.D. and CS2 through Proton. Both of them launch fine, but CS2 hits a VAC error even though everything else runs perfectly smooth. It’s frustrating, because you can feel the game is ready — it’s just the anti-cheat blocking it.

Many devs still think “adding Linux support” means a full port or tons of extra work, when in reality it’s just a few steps to enable anti-cheat compatibility.

I feel like a small awareness push from Valve could help a ton — maybe a short blog post or a Steamworks email just reminding devs that Linux users (and Deck players) are ready and waiting.

Wouldn’t it be awesome if more multiplayer games just worked on day one?

What do you guys think? Is this something Valve should do, or should we try to spread the word ourselves?

Note: This is my first post, and it's not fully AI-written. I just got a little help phrasing it better. Thanks for reading! :)
