WineGUI has been released in version v4.5.2.
WineGUI is a user-friendly graphical manager for Wine on Linux.
This patch release fixes Wine runner selection: a runner selected in WineGUI is now used consistently together with its matching wineserver, including Winetricks and desktop shortcuts. Incomplete custom Wine installations now produce an error instead of silently falling back to system Wine.
Patch release fixing Wine runner selection when creating, configuring and launching bottles. A downloaded runner selected in WineGUI is now used consistently together with its matching wineserver, including Winetricks operations and generated shortcuts.
๐ Consistent Wine runner selection
- Use the selected installation throughout: Bottle creation, Windows version changes, audio and virtual desktop settings, application launches and Winetricks operations now use the bottle’s selected Wine runner and matching wineserver.
- No silent fallback: Incomplete custom Wine installations now produce an explicit error instead of falling back to system Wine. This fixes cases where configuring a 32-bit bottle unexpectedly used a different system Wine installation.
- Safer runner changes: Changing a bottle’s runner checks for running Wine processes before applying the change. Bottle edits also retain the original target bottle throughout the operation.
๐ง Desktop shortcut repairs
- WineGUI automatically refreshes its managed shortcuts when loading bottles so they use the current runner settings.
- Fixed desktop command escaping to preserve literal paths and arguments containing spaces and special characters.
๐งช Regression coverage and release checks
- Expanded tests for runner selection, matching wineserver usage, Winetricks configuration, missing runners and actual desktop shortcut launches.
- Added AppStream metadata validation and APT publisher tests to CI, with improved release-link error handling and retry support.
- Updated download labels to identify compatible distribution series more clearly.
