To mark its 10th anniversary, the Anniversary Update for Owlboy has been released on Steam.
Owlboy is a story-driven 2D platform adventure by D-Pad Studio in which you fly as the mute owl boy Otus and carry companions as gunners. The game runs natively on Linux.
New are a Super Dash, an auto-aim system (the whole game is playable without a second stick), skippable cutscenes and a speedrunner mode via the Steam branch “speedrunner”. The game is currently 90% off on Steam at €1.95 instead of €19.50 (offer ends November 15): Owlboy on the Steam Store.
Not only is it 10 years since Owlboy’s original launch - but we’re also proud to present this game update that we’ve been dwelling on for the last couple of months!
This update introduces a new dash move that you can perform while holding the ‘roll’ button, an auto-aiming system that let’s you play the entire game without the use of a second thumbstick on your controller, and for returning players - you’ll now be able to skip all major cutscenes in the game - which definetly comes in handy for those who wants to get right into the action!
Settings
- Auto-aim can now be toggled on/off in the Options Menu.
- Screenshake can now be toggled on/off in the Options Menu.
- Flash Effects can now be toggled on/off in the Options Menu.
- Drop Gunner On Dodge can now be toggled on/off in the Options Menu (this option is useful for when you want some extra mobility in combat or platforming).
Gameplay
- Added the Super Dash ability - hold the ‘Roll’ button for an addtional boost in your current direction when rolling.
- Various enemies can now be stunned by dropping Geddy or Alphonse on their heads.
- Pickups are now thrown in the direction Otus is flying when pressing the Throw button.
- Fast-Forward through cutscenes by holding the ‘Fast-forward’ button (Defaults to F-key or Right Bumper).
- ZXC-Keys can now be used for these actions: Throw (Z-key), Shoot (X-key), Spin Attack (C-key)
- Several game halting cutscenes have been removed (mostly when entering or closing doors).
Balancing
- Several bosses has had their attack patterns modified.
- Various balances to bosses & enemies HP.
- Alphonse’s Blast attack now affects more bosses and enemies.
- Several environment layouts have been altered to make them easier to navigate.
- Fire-damage no longer eats at Otus’ healthbar.
- Pirates can now be permanently stunned in various ways during stealth sections.
Along with these additions, there are also a long list of bugs and glitches that have been fixed. OH - and on the topic of glitches!
Speed-runner Mode Some of the glitches have been intentionally left behind in a new version of the game, because these are used as speed runner techniques. This mode can be activated in the settings file (stored in your Save Files/Owlboy folder) or by opting into a new Steam branch - “speedrunner”.
Anniversary Live Stream Yet another part of our celebration - but this time is special indeed, as we’ll be hosting a let’s play session where we play the unreleased beta version of Owlboy, containing the experimental Co-op mode, for the very first time shown publicly. Tune in at 13:00 (PST) and join the party! (Warning - this version of the game is a hilarious broken mess. Please don’t judge!)
