Open Sourcerer: programming platformer now available for free on Steam

Open Sourcerer is now available for free on Linux via Steam.

The game is a 2D platformer where spells are programmed and customized with JavaScript. The project has been abandoned, though: the source code is being open-sourced and a post-mortem for other developers is planned.

State of the Game

The project is dead. We’re currently open-sourcing the repository to match the game’s name (and original post-release plans) and producing a written post-mortem for other developers.

About the Game

Open Sourcerer was intended as a 2D platformer where you used JavaScript to control and customize your spells. Players would learn the basics of programming in JS in a safe, sandboxed environment with a mix of traditional APIs and custom spell dependencies - the building blocks of your offensive and defensive abilities. Solve puzzles, defeat enemies, and build your own abilities in a story-rich platforming environment. No prior programming experience is necessary.

This is a dead, partially vibe-coded game. We are releasing it in its current state of completion for free.

We have two key takeaways for other devs:

Computer science education requires a human element.

Vibe coding can quickly turn a strong project into a nightmare.
