MAKO Renderer: Frame generation solution for Linux released in version 4.5.0

The MAKO Renderer has been released in version 4.5.0, codenamed “Maelstrom”.

MAKO is a Vulkan layer solution for Linux that provides frame generation, upscaling, shader effects and adaptive frame rate targets for games.

New features include experimental HDR, separate profiles for AC and battery power, and support for custom ReShade shaders. MAKO now also works without Lossless Scaling.

  • Experimental HDR: HDR10/PQ and linear scRGB support with Scaling, Frame Generation, and Shaders via Gamescope on external HDR displays. Quality, Balanced, and Performance modes available.
  • Window-mode stability: Improved swapchain retirement and resize recovery across Scaling, Frame Generation, and HDR.
  • AC and battery profiles: Separate Frame Generation, Scaling, and performance settings that switch automatically during gameplay.
  • Match Display Refresh Rate: Adaptive mode can follow Gamescope’s refresh rate with manual fallback option.
  • Custom shader controls: Combine ReShade .fx files with bundled effects in ordered lists; live editing and reloading supported.
  • Use MAKO without Lossless Scaling: MAKO Renderer operates independently; only Frame Generation and LS1 require Lossless Scaling.
  • Reusable profiles in both editors: Create named profiles without running games; Qt copies profiles including power sets and custom shaders.
  • Native Steam Remote Play: Enable streaming on receiving x86_64 Linux devices; requires Python 3.11+.
  • Consistent precision controls: FP16/FP32 controls for LSFG and MAKO Scaler color arithmetic.
  • Disable Steam Overlay (Restart): New global launcher control reducing potential stutter.
  • Frame pacing and recovery: Enhanced capped output spacing and GPU readiness timing.
  • Launcher profile matching: Better recognition of Ubisoft, CD Projekt RED, Rockstar, and EA app processes.
  • Flatpak support: Freedesktop 26.08 alongside 23.08-25.08; VRR override support.
  • Shaders with Frame Generation: vkBasalt reduces per-frame CPU work while preserving ReShade settings.
  • German & Russian configuration app interfaces: Localization support added.
