We’ve updated the way sale events appear on game store pages to add clarity for players, both on the event itself and on the kinds of games they can expect to find.
Now, when a game is included in a sale event on Steam (such as a publisher sale, a regional sale, or a third-party organized themed sale) a brand-new personalized section appears alongside the “More like this” carousel and highlights a few games from the event that are recommended for that person.
Improving relevancy to players One of the problems we’ve had in the past is with the lack of clarity around event banners that appeared at the top of game pages; we’ve heard from players that it often isn’t clear why they’re seeing that event, or that the context of the event itself was confusing. With this update, the relevance and context of sale events will be more clearly communicated, and the presentation itself will be personalized for each player.
- When a game is part of multiple events at the same time, we’ll now prioritize showing the event that includes the most games that are highly recommended for that player.
- For the event that we’re showing to a user, it will now select and highlight the games from that event that are most relevant to that player.
New location for event highlights Many sale events are not directly promoted on Steam’s homepage, but get surfaced on the ‘Discounts & Events’ page and also as a banner across the top of game pages for each of the games included in the event. In some cases, a game might be part of quite a few different events over the course of a year, resulting in there being a banner on the top of the store page for almost all visitors. This has become a problem as these banners get in the way of the key information about the game; the information that players originally came to that game page to learn more about. So, we’re removing these banners to help players focus on what they are looking for on a store page. If that player wants to keep exploring and look for other games, the new event section is located alongside the other carousels of exploring for other games.
Publisher Sales, Themed Sales, and Showcase Events This new format applies to all kinds of sale events that can be organized on Steam. Some of these events are publisher sales, organized by the publisher of the game, while other events are themed sales or regional sales organized by a fellow developer. Still other events are showcase events such as Gamescom, Triple-I Showcase, or The Game Awards, organized by a third-party.
