Drives used on windows don't play non-native games

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. Juni 2024 - 04:10

When I switched to Linux, I kept most of my drives that still have steam games on them. When I try to play these games, they don't even start, the steam button goes back to play, I've tried it with lutris/wine but it still doesn't work. The only way to get them to work is by installing them on my external usb drive or onto my boot menu. Even if I reinstall them on the drive they still won't work. Is there anyway to fix the drives to get the games on them to work? Not erasing everything on them would be preferred but I can make it work. Do I need to reformat it?

I'm using Linux Mint 21.3, Steam and Lutris installed just off the package manager for Linux Mint, both really recently. I don't know if specs are relevant but I am using a RTX 3080 and a ryzen 5 5600x. I am pretty sure I am using the proprietary driver for the graphics card. Attached is the driver I am using. Here is the log when I tried to launch Raft, a game I had reinstalled onto one of the broken drives

Started initial process 81 from /usr/bin/xdg-open steam://rungameid/648800

Start monitoring process.

Monitored process exited.

Initial process has exited (return code: 0)

All processes have quit

Exit with return code 0

Steam thinks I have a controller plugged in all the time [Fedora]

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. Juni 2024 - 01:03

In lethal company, if you have a controller plugged in, it messes up your inputs and the game is unplayable, your action (typically bound to left click) button will not work no matter what it is bound to. And now as I play on Fedora, steam always thinks I have a controller plugged in (which I do not) so I'm really not sure what the issue is

Trying to Play with PS5 Dualsense edge controller and use gestures but it keeps acting as a mouse

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 02. Juni 2024 - 23:32

if it matters I'm running an arch system with x11 kde

I've played with the touchpad settings included with kde and steam inputs, no matter what I do the touchpad wants to act as a mouse and I can't use the gestures (trying to play ghost of tsushima). Google results on the issue just talk about the controller supporting linux out of the box.

Any help would be appreciated

Game mode in bottles doesn't work and thus the screens goes dark after "inactivity" by playing with controller

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 02. Juni 2024 - 23:03

So apparently Linux doesn't detect a controller as a real input that interrupts energy saving settings so the dim, sleep turn off screen etc, settings get into effect after a while

On mint I fixed it by putting bottles in game mode in it's settings but now I changed to OpenSUSE with kde plasma and this setting doesn't work, I had to turn off all energy saving option from my PC but this is not idea, any way to make game mode work?

Intermediate Linux User, Beginner with Gaming - Could use another set of eyes!

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 02. Juni 2024 - 22:47

Hey y'all. Bit of a noob here with GUI-based Linux, although I'm quite comfortable in the CLI. Most of my Linux experience has been for work and in the terminal, although I also have quite a bit of homelabbing, where I also tend to just run CLI. All that said, I am quite sure that I'll be missing details below that might help to shed some light, but I'm happy to learn and provide more info if that helps!

So here's the situation. Running into a few issues with Windows over the last few months related to having to start/stop certain services in a particular order to get a couple of things working. Then dealing with some issues with Microsoft login that made some games unplayable for a while. You get the picture. Frustrated with the lack of control and visibility into what's causing the issues, I've decided to give gaming on Linux a shot and installed Arch.

Setup went smoothly, created LVM to separate / and /home, booted into the DE, everything looks great. Followed along with a few Arch Wiki pages to get nvidia drivers installed, loaded up Mincraft and it's just gorgeous. I think better than Windows, but I might just WANT it to be. Anyway, plays great.

Then I turned to start working on getting Rocket League running. ProtonDB has plenty of entries saying everything works just fine, with a variety of Proton and GE versions. At first I made the mistake of installing the Linux native version, but fixed that and everything is "working". But it's like the difference from my PC to my Xbox - choppy frames, particularly when close to the ball and the camera is moving a lot. I can see in nvidia-smi that it is indeed using the Nvidia card (another problem I had to fix, as it was using integrated Intel at first). A little odd to me but moving from 144 Hz to uncapped looks to be using the same amount of VRAM per nvidia-smi. Also seems like my Xbox controller is wildly more sensitive here. The controller I'm confident I can work around, but just throwing that in as well.

Same video settings as I used on Windows, but drastically lower performance. So my natural assumption is there's something I haven't installed or tweaked, or configured, or something along those lines.

Some details to help paint a picture:

12th Gen Intel i7-12700K

64 GB DDR4-3200

Asus TUF Z690-PLUS D4

EVGA RTX3080 12GB

Not sure if any other details there would be required. For Arch, I'm running 6.9.3-arch1-1 kernel, as I mentioned LVM for / and /home, nvidia-dkms drivers (550.78.1, installed this morning), KDE Plasma for DE, and due to 2 1080p monitors and one 4K, Wayland. My understanding is that X11 is still better than Wayland, but I've seen some sort of conflicting info on this, or possibly I'm misunderstanding what I'm reading. Still, what I've seen suggests a 10-16% drop in performance which my equipment should be far and above able to work through.

Otherwise, no major changes that should affect anything graphical. Bit of tweaking with alacritty to make it look nice, that sort of thing.

Any suggestions? Any more info I can provide? I know hand-holding is a bit annoying, but I'm still at the stage where I don't know what I don't know.... ya know?

Dark bar across top of screen in Far Cry 5

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 02. Juni 2024 - 22:17

https://preview.redd.it/3rtvky9nu74d1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=79c6658344e86a5d596c157c280439f837696ed5

There is a transparent black bar across the top of my screen when playing Far Cry 5. It shows everywhere in the game, int menus, cut scenes, and gameplay. It appears in fullscreen, windowed, and borderless. I've tried Proton Experimental and GE but neither fix it. It may be because I skipped processing vulkan shaders, but it usually takes hours to do so for big games like this. I use an Nvidia RTX 4060 Ti with proprietary drivers. Distro is Kubuntu 24.04 LTS. I bought the game through Steam, not Ubisoft.

Edit: Let Steam process vulkan shaders, issue NOT resolved.

My experience with "not well known" games

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 02. Juni 2024 - 22:06

Hey everyone! I'm someone who is attached to old games that have not been ported to Steam.

So I had to rely on Bottles to see how things go. It might have been a bad idea to start with Bottles right away instead of Lutris but I did regardless.

First photo (Zombie Andreas) is basically a standalone version of San Andreas but with zombies. It had some quirks where the mouse would disappear after closing the game and a crash when looking at the fire. But changing the runner from soda 9 to the latest Wine GE fixed most of those issues (I also had to play the game windowed mode to fully avoid the mouse error) overall for my first experience with Bottles I'd say 9/10

Second photo (Blade of Agony) is also a standalone version of Doom with mods and what not. The experience was out of the box, I first tried this one with Steam adding it as non Steam game and also with Bottles, nothing to complain about. 10/10

Third photo (Gunman Chronicles) is yet another standalone version of Half-Life developed by Rewolf.

It had a lot of errors along the way, the installer crashed and was a freaking demon I couldn't kill. I fixed that by just logging out and in.

Then it was asking for the disk like those old games, the game came with a non cd patch and it was... finicky to install but nothing too bad.

Then the huge issue: the game was giving an error saying: "There is 0kb of memory detected and the game needs 16MB" and it would not work at all.

I tried all online fixes and I was about to give up and call that game a failure on Linux until I decided to change the runner from Wine GE to syswine that already came with Bottles...

It just worked like that lol. Worked like normal, the resolution was screwed up but that's normal for a game released back in 1999. 6.5/10

Overall, there were some minor issues and bumps along the way but nothing some tweaking couldn't solve.

I'm pretty certain other old or standalone games might work. Aiming to try Voices of the Void and STALKER GAMMA next to see what happens with those games.

TL:DR: Great experience. For now I wouldn't need to switch to Windows to play a game I cannot play on Linux.

Issue running XDefiant

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 02. Juni 2024 - 21:16

Hey,

after seeing some success stories of people getting XDefiant to run under Linux I tried myself. Sadly, I can't get it to work for longer than a few minutes, before it crashes.

In the logs I get errors about:
"wine: Call from 00006FFFFFFA2C38 to unimplemented function ADVAPI32.dll.PerfEnumerateCounterSet, aborting"

Does anyone have any Ideas? Any help is appreciated!

My Setup:
Distro: NixOS
DE: Plasma 6, Wayland
CPU: Ryzen 7 7700X
GPU: RTX 3090 (with new Nvidia 555 drivers)
Install Method: Ubisoft connect installed in Heroic, tried GE-Proton9-5 and Proton Experimental (Logs are with Proton Experimental, but look the same with GE-Proton), pdh_nt4.dll and pdh.dll installed
Full logs: https://pastebin.com/NGT2yajS

Edit: I primarily followed these two tutorials: https://youtu.be/q6BJn7OnJF0 https://youtu.be/_PLEm1v9bzw

Bazzite os controller pairing issue

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 02. Juni 2024 - 20:52

So I built a living room PC designed to be used by a controller. Xbox One elite controller.

I tried chimera os and couldn't get it to work without having to use the command line every time I boot it up.

Tried holoiso and had constant crashes.

Was advised that bazzite was one of the most mature controller centric os out there, so I gave it a shot. And I love it.

However, it has a bug the other two didn't: my controller won't pair unless I go to the Bluetooth menu. Like I don't have to pair it again. But it just plain won't connect unless I use a keyboard to go to the Bluetooth menu. That's all I have to do is just navigate to that menu and it'll connect as soon as it opens. What could be causing this? Any tips on how to fix it? Trying to never have to touch a keyboard with this PC and it's been an adventure to say the least.
