We need a Ubuntu distro that just launches Steam in BigPicture mode in its own X11 / XWayland session for non-AMD hardware.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 02. Juni 2024 - 01:30

Reason behind desire: So I have a "OnexPlayer Mini with I7-1195G7", MSI Claw, Nvida systems etc.

  • Many systems have issues with gamescope in ChimeraOS/BazziteOS even when they support modern Vulkan versions. Gamescope is kind of blocking some people from having a good Linux gaming experience on some hardware thats otherwise quite good. Ubuntu based consolized distro could help move more ppl to Linux.
  • One huge issue for non-Ubuntu distros is Ubuntu just seems to be more compatible at a driver level with a lot of devices out of the box. IDK if its just better configurations in Ubuntu or what but it just works when other distros like Fedora or Arch don't.
  • So how easy would it be to create a Ubuntu distro with say Cubic that just launches Steam in big-picture mode in its own X11 or XWayland session? Then if Steam is quit, it auto launches Ubuntu's standard Gnome interface.
  • In Gnome interface there is just an icon to re-launch Steam mode and exit Gnome session.

Thoughts?

Cs2 crashes when unminimizing

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 02. Juni 2024 - 01:30

I'm running arch (cachyos) and every time I play cs2 in Wayland it crashes after tabbing out. I think it's due to Wayland but I just prefer how it runs. I know windowed mode works but would there be any way to get it to not crash during fullscreen?

I'm on Nvidia drivers. If anything I'd just like to find a way to keep the game fullscreen when tabbing out

SteelSeries APEX 3 TKL

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 02. Juni 2024 - 01:14

Does anyone here have this and can comment on whether all the functions work in Linux? Specifically, I am wondering about the volume wheel and media keys. Also, is the RGB lighting customizable in Linux?

Thanks

Someone knows how to definitively set the deadzone of a gamepad system wide (or on the driver)?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Juni 2024 - 23:33

I have 4 ancient Xbox 360 controller, which works fairly well, however the analog isn't precise anymore, so I always need to set deadzone to play comfortably. This is pretty common on emulators, but for PC games can be a bit annoying (I had issues with steam input).

On jstest there's the calibration option which has some interesting values:

The range of one controller is RangeMin -32768 to RangeMax 32767, and the deadzone are CenterMin -128 to CenterMax 128, which is IMO unecessarily low value, even to perfect controllers (<0.5%)

I generally set to 10% the deadzones on those controllers, if someone knows how to make those changes definitively, I'll appreciate a lot.

Apex freezes and grey textures

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Juni 2024 - 23:20

Hey, I have been experiencing 2 different problems that may or may not be related and I was just wondering if anybody had similar problems to me. I will be playing the game fine and then all of a sudden it will freeze for about 2-3 seconds then go back to normal. In addition, textures and skins take about 15 seconds to load in menus and longer in games, meaning that I have enemies who are just grey models for a while in the beginning of the game. I have seen other peoples apex freeze, but they describe the game crashing afterwards so I don't think its the same.

I am using debian 12 and have a 4060 and ryzen 3600. I am using protonGE 9-5, and other than that, have not done much except install the propper GPU drivers to my system so this could definitely be me not doing something in setup of linux for gaming as I am new to gaming on linux.

Any help would be super appreciated and thank you all for your time in advance.

Processor and Motherboard recommendations?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Juni 2024 - 21:40

I am finally getting around to upgrading my gaming rig, and the next thing that should be upgraded is my processor and mobo. I'm currently running a Ryzen 5 3600X, so just about anything will be an upgrade, but to be honest I'm a bit overwhelmed with my choices. I'd like to spend about $400 total.

The first question is architecture, do I go with a Zen 3 or Zen 4? This also influences which motherboard I get. Also, I don't think it matters but I'm on arch.

Processors

Here are the three I'm looking at:

Processor Price AMD - Ryzen 5 5600X 4th Gen 6-core, 12-threads Unlocked Desktop Processor With Wraith Stealth Cooler $170 AMD - Ryzen 7 5800X 4th Gen 8-core, 16-threads Unlocked Desktop Processor Without Cooler $200 AMD - Ryzen 5 7600X 6-core - 12-Thread 4.7GHz (5.3 GHz Max Boost) Socket AM5 Desktop Processor $220 Motherboards

I don't really know exactly what to look for here. I want something with built in wifi, but I honestly have no idea what brands are really good here and what to avoid. It also depends on my choice of processor above, but here are a few of the mobos I'm considering:

Mobo Price ASUS - TUF GAMING X570-PLUS (WI-FI) (Socket AM4) AMD X570 ATX DDR5 Wi-Fi 6E Motherboard $185 GIGABYTE - B650 AORUS ELITE AX (Socket AM5) AMD B650 ATX DDR5 Wi-Fi 6E Motherboard $200 MSI - MAG B650 Tomahawk WIFI (Socket AM5) AMD B650 ATX DDR5 Wi-Fi 6E Motherboard - Black - Front_Zoom MSI - MAG B650 Tomahawk WIFI (Socket AM5) AMD B650 ATX DDR5 Wi-Fi 6E Motherboard $215

Any advice is appreciated!

Extreme Framepacing Issues in Wayland Plasma

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Juni 2024 - 21:02

I'm running Arch with the Plasma desktop and Wayland. For some reason i'm getting extremely inconsistent framepacing in most Fullscreen games. The game looks like its running at 15FPS but the game itself feels like its at 60FPS and all frame counters say that the game is running at 60FPS. When I turn VSync On it usually solves the issue but because I play a lot of fighting games I would rather keep it off due to the input lag it adds. I have a 75hz freesync monitor but every time I try to turn "Adaptive Sync" on it just goes straight to a blackscreen with my monitor turned off. I've looked everywhere for a solution and even switched to Plasma Beta 6.1 hoping that explicit sync would solve the issue. I have mesa 24.1 installed and I am using an RX 6700. I have attached my neofetch output and vulkaninfo summary which for some reason still says im running plasma 6.0 even though I have upgraded to 6.1 and have all the 6.1 features. All of the games I play with this issue are using either the latest Proton or Proton Experimental build.

Nerdy, math/science-oriented Linux multiplayer games

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Juni 2024 - 20:26

I already know two amazing nerdy games: - Graphwar (you hit enemies with mathemathical formulae) - Slingshot (you shoot against each other in a complex gravitational field)

Are there any other games like that? I'm looking for multiplayer games, so that I can play with friends over LAN/hot-seat.

I wrote a script that does all post-install needed for a gaming Linux setup on Arch-based distros.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Juni 2024 - 18:58

It was built and works 100% in Endeavour, the distro I use, but should work on any Arch-based distro as long as the official, multilib and AUR repositories are enabled, so if you wanted a quick setup it's your chance!

For Youtubers and other video editors like myself, I also wrote a patcher for DaVinci Resolve Studio from the AUR that fixes an issue causing it not to launch and an 'out of GPU memory' error caused by hybrid GPU setups.

Enjoy!

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Juni 2024 - 18:16

I have tried to use my T248 (thrustmaster) but it won't work with any games I installed using steam from the .deb file

I tried it again with the snap-store version of steam and it did work.

Does anyone know why and how to fix?

X-Moto: Servers down for weeks now

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Juni 2024 - 18:06

Maybe some of you remember this open-source motocross platform game that was fairly popular around 2010 (don't understand why it isn't anymore). Their website/servers should be hosted there: https://xmoto.tuxfamily.org/

I still play this game regularly, but noticed about two weeks ago that I could no longer download highscores / view replays / get new levels etc. Basically the online portion of the game vanished. The website is down too since that time.

What can be done to get them running again? Should I contact someone at tuxfamily? At least the about 2000 levels many people contributed over the years and the highscore replays should be archived and made available as a download / torrent or something.

nVidia RTX 3060 Stuck in Low Power Mode?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Juni 2024 - 17:49

Hey all! Have kind of a weird issue.

I'm...

  • Running NVIDIA Driver 555.42.02 on Kubuntu 24.04 (Plasma 5.27.11)
  • Using Wayland
  • on an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060

I am experiencing an issue where my GPU seems to be stuck in low power mode. While doing watch nvidia-smi -i 0 -q -d POWER, running World of Warcraft I notice my power draw never goes above 25w. WoW's Graphics settings shows the Graphics mode for my 3060 is [Low Power]. When doing the aforementioned nvidia-smi, it shows the Power Limit is set to 170w.

Because I'm running Wayland, I don't seem to have any way to set powermizer settings (some things I've looked up, such as nvidia-tweaks, say that Powermizer settings don't even work anymore but I don't know if this is still true.)

Everything else on the system is peachy-keen but anything that pulls GPU crawls.

To summarize what I've done so far:

  • Disabled GSP (per this comment)
  • Verified everything should be configured correctly.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide!

Edge scrolling dilemma on multi-monitor setups

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Juni 2024 - 16:31

Hi everyone, this is a problem that bugs me for a long time now and is one of the last show-stoppers when it comes to completely ditching Windows.

Mandatory env info: arch + wayland + plasma 6 + nvidia 555. (but this has happened back in time of plasma 5 + x11 as well).

To the point: Egde scrolling detection, mostly relevant for all kinds of strategy games. In Windows, as long as the window/fullscreen application is active/focused, whenever I move the cursor out of the application context (for example to a second screen) the edge scrolling event keeps firing (the maps scrolls right when I move the cursor to the right screen, even when cursor is out of the application context). In my env, it seems totally random - sometimes it scrolls, sometimes it's not, probably because the application did not receive the mouse pointer update "in the right spot" before leaving window.

There might be some switch in settings, a window rule, or something similar that could alleviate the issue at hand, but to my mind the default behavior as it is will be a pain for anyone gaming on multi-monitor setup (or using windowed display in games).

Obvious workarounds to that would be to either somehow "lock" the mouse cursor to the application context so it cannot escape until I deliberately unfocus the application by alt-tabbing, or to somehow force the application to "receive the position event" when cursor is outside the context. Or maybe there is some pointer/focus setting that prevents the event from firing when I'm moving the cursor "too fast"...? It's all speculation on my side right now, but I'm determined to dig out the cause and try to fix it :)
