I’m asking the question that has been asked 1000000000000 times …

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 05. Januar 2025 - 18:45

(But sure if this is the right sub to ask) So I’m switching to Linux because I don’t like Windows 11 … but the all important question I ask myself now… what distro … so my priorities are

-Gaming (steam and Epic mostly)

-discord

-privacy (I don’t like to be potentially spied on)

-windows-ish UI

-beginner friendly (I’m not a total idiot … CMD isn’t strange to me … but I don’t like going there)

-no command line app installation (no idea what the actual name is) I prefer a “AppStore” ui

-customisation

-stable

That’s all I can think off

EDIT:

-completely forgot… I use CAD software (fusion 360 for now)

I just watched Linus video about SteamOS. So, is this actually viable on AMD hardware?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 05. Januar 2025 - 18:24

I have a secondary PC under my TV which is used for Steam 99.9% of the time. Full AMD hardware (5600, B550, RX 6600). It is currently running Arch but I'm intrigued but this whole console environment thing. Is SteamOS actually viable?

What to look for in a laptop to use bazzite for emulation

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 05. Januar 2025 - 18:05

Hello all, I am interested in buying a cheap laptop to use for gaming (mainly emulation but would probably also run some low end PC games). I have been doing some research and it seems like bazzite OS would be the one for me but I think it's much better with AMD hardware? My main goal for the device would be setting up emudeck/emulation station so I can take it out and about and play classic couch co op games with mates. I would need it to be able to run run up to PS2/Gamecube games well but I am not bothered about upscaling. I am hoping to find a preowned or refurb one relatively cheap, if anyone can give me any pointers that would be much appreciated!

Serious question, why hasn't anyone thought of basing a gaming distro off of one of the existing immutable options?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 05. Januar 2025 - 18:04

So, this is a follow-up to Linus tech tips video about steam OS. Immutable operating systems have existed for a while, and I'm kind of wondering why they never took off as a way to build an unbreakable OS. Fedora rawhide exists, but to the best of my knowledge, none of the gaming distros have decided to use it as a base. And the question really is, why? The solution has been staring Us in the face for a really long time. What about immutable Oasis is so weird that it makes them non-viable candidates?

When will Anti cheat come to Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 05. Januar 2025 - 17:10

Since Valve is hard at work on SteamOS 3.0 support for computers, pumping a lot of money into Arch and if SteamOS for Computers releases an more people could migrate to Linux. When will big gaming companies realize that they need to support the Linux platform?

Will that ever happen? Will it happen soon?

What do you all think?

Static Audio and Low Framerate on Debian 12 while in game

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 05. Januar 2025 - 15:58

Hi! I am working to migrate off of windows but am having some serious issues with painfully static audio and low framerate in game.

Relevant hardware:

  • CPU: AMD 7800x3D
  • GPU: Nvidia RTX 4070 TI SUPER
  • Headset: Logitech G Pro X wireless (dongle is connected to the motherboard via a single USB extension cord)
  • Primary Display Specs: 1440p at 180 hz
  • Everything works fine under Windows 11

Software and setup:

  • Running debian 12
  • Installed Nvidia drivers and ensured they are running
  • Ensured that I'm using digital audio output
  • Confirmed display settings at set to 180hz

I've lost count of how many posts about pulse audio I've found and lost count of how many things I've tired. Zero results; and at this point I have completely wiped my install and started fresh; same issue. Interestingly enough, I had the same audio issue on PopOS, and that was a major factor in getting rid of it.

Please let me know what else I should check and/or what other information I should provide. Thank you

Samsung TV Gamemode and Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 05. Januar 2025 - 14:36

Hi,
I have a Samsung TV with a Game Mode feature that reduces latency by disabling certain picture enhancements. There are three options: On, Off, and Auto. When I was still using Windows, I had the setting set to Auto, and when I started a game, the TV would automatically switch to Game Mode (it didn't work 100% of the time, but about 90% of the time).
However, on Linux, the auto-switch feature doesn't work. I have to manually enable Game Mode. My assumption is that there might be some information in the HDMI signal that tells the TV a game is being displayed, prompting it to switch to Game Mode. I don't own a console, but based on my research, it seems that consoles also trigger this automatic switch to Game Mode.
I have been searching for possible solutions or ways to address this problem, but I haven't found anything so far.
Perhaps someone could point me in the right direction. I have an IT background and am willing to dig deeper into this issue, but I need some guidance to get started.

My Specs if relevant:
AMD 7800X3D
NVIDIA RTX 4080 Super
32 GB RAM
Fedora 41

Using a controller with the bottles flatpak?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 05. Januar 2025 - 14:00

I have been using steam to manually install my gog games forever, but wanted to try their Galaxy client for more convenience.

I got bottles, used the built in Galaxy 2.0 installer, and signed into my account.

The Galaxy client itself was super slow/laggy with the base bottle defaults, but I was willing to overlook that since once games are started things work smoothely and fine.

My only real issue is being unable to use my wired dualshock. I tried to use it with streets of rogue, the gamepad was detected by the game, but none of the inputs registered.

Should I use a different runner than the default Soda? Or edit some config somewhere?

Arc B580 or RX 7600 XT?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 05. Januar 2025 - 13:11

I'm looking to build a PC to upgrade from my old laptop. I mainly use Linux and I'm torn between getting an Intel or AMD GPU.

I heard that the B580 is not yet there in terms of linux support and many games have problems with it and I know that AMD just works on Linux.

The B580 is 50€ cheaper and clearly more powerful.

So my question is, do I get the B580 and bear with it until it gets better driver support or spend 50€ more on the RX 7600 XT that just works?

Yes I know the RX 7600 is cheaper with similar performance but 8GB VRAM is not enough for me because I do more than just gaming (3D rendering and game dev)

Why does so few game developers choose to support linux if the game has anticheat

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 05. Januar 2025 - 12:17

So many games that utilize some form of an anticheat dont choose to support linux because its easier to cheat on linux since it doesn't support kernel level anticheat. But a game like Sea of thieves is fully supported. And the anticheat for most bigger games have already been bypassed. For example, gta online. There where already bypasses the day they added the anticheat. Some form of anticheat does actually work by removing the newbie hackers/exploiters. Kernel level anticheat also create a security and privacy risk for windows users aswell.

Can't run CS2 on Linux (kind of)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 05. Januar 2025 - 12:08

I tried running CS2 on Linux (with Steam Runtime 3.0 for better perofromance) but the game simply crashes after displaying game logo. With Proton it works but i think i'm loosing a lot of performance. I tried on Manjaro fork and Linux Mint. Platform: Intel + Intel iGPU

Current gaming experience (launchers, UMU,...)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 05. Januar 2025 - 08:05

Hi!

After I gamed on Linux for a year or so I decided to return to Win11 as performance on Nvidia HW was just not good (FPS, stutters, even lower RT performance,...). This is half a year ago and during that time I followed this sub and all the developments. With the new Nvidia drivers and launchers with UMU support (Heroic and Lutris) the itch was too strong and I decided to give various Linux distro another try. I tested Mint 22, Nobara, CachyOS and Manjaro unstable branch.

Long story short, it is a mess. Either I am too stupid or the current state of the launchers and runners is just bad.

On all of those distros, including Nobara, I faced enormous issues with them. Lutris for instance only allowed to use the old Wine-GE and not Proton GE. UMU, even though it got installed by myself or ootb (Nobara) did not even show up. And there is just no option to activate it. Hence I ditched Lutris and went on to Heroic. At least I could install Proton GE latest and activate UMU in the advanced options. That does not mean it went how it is supposed to be. No games got detected by UMU. For instance Star Citizen. Launching RSI Launcher confused this UMU thingy because I did not MANUALLY pass the UMU ID to UMU. I mean why do I have to do that? It is RSI Launcher exe so it should be detected automatically, right? The same with other games. Alright, so I passed the ID to UMU which finally allowed me to install Star Citizen in Heroic. Nice! In the log I could see that some fixes got applied. Nice again! But just for a minute. Launching the game still did not work due to issued with Anti Cheat. Why did UMU not fix it?

Went back to Lutris and installed the game via the scripted install. Went well but I had to use the old Wine GE. Game starts but no DLSS even though I activated the latest nvapi.

I fiddled around with Proton up but that did not solve anything and went to bed.

In a nutshell, this experience was way worse than what I experienced half a year ago without UMU.

Probably I just messed up. I am not a Linux pro but managed to set up my system properly in the past with some system tweaks. But I have the feeling this UMU thingy and it's introduction are just kind of bad. No offense, but if it even does not work on Nobara then what exactly has gone wrong?

Sorry for the long post, but I really was hoping to go back to Linux. This won't happen until it works again or even better.
