Is there any news regarding nvidia and vrr on multiple monitors ?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. September 2024 - 18:47

I tried going over to linux, i still have it on dualboot but one thing holds me back.
I am the kind of person that likes to have a stream or youtube or anything else open on my second monitor all ... the ... time.

I am alone and it makes me feel less ... lonely i guess.

But every time i go back to linux i cannot do so since any game i launch suddenly looses vrr even when the second screen is not active. I can disable it ofcourse but then why have a second screen at all ?

Has nvidia indicated anywhere if (and +- when) they were going to try and solve this issue ?

The second one is HDR but with plasma it seems to be almost there ?

I am on endeavourOS, latest in wayland session.

Cheers !

Mechanical Keyboard with RGB and Programmable Keys?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. September 2024 - 18:01

I know this might be a bit of a stretch but are there any mechanical keyboards that have proprietary apps or FOSS on Linux that have both RGB and programmable keys?

I would ideally like both but I will settle for just RGB (even if it doesn't have a gui).

WoW - Wine or Proton/Proton-GE?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. September 2024 - 17:52

I’ve run WoW under Wine-via-Lutris and Steam/Proton-GE (9-11) and I’m not sure which one is better.

All of them work mind you, so maybe this is just me…min-maxing…but I can’t help feeling like one of them MUST be better, even though there are no real issues.

I felt like when running through Lutris it was a little laggy, not enough to affect gameplay but maybe just in my head, with a crash now and again but not frequent.

I tried to “remove the middleman” of Lutris just to see, and I figured that it runs very smoothly on the Steamdeck and so maybe Proton-GE was the way but had not-infrequent crashing as of the past week. Of course now I’ve just introduced another middleman - Steam, that may not be necessary.

This is also coming on the heels of a new expansion so there could be some game lag/instability in general, but now I’m unsure what the “best” route to stick with is. I’m only wringing my hands about this because as the new Season starts shortly and I will be raiding and doing Mythics I’m trying to ensure I’m rock-solid.

I just keep going back and forth on which I should stick with - Lutris/Wine or Steam/Proton-GE ( regular Proton had all sorts of weirdness ).

Using Fedora 40, KDE Wayland, latest nvidia drivers w/ a 2070 Super, no issues with any other ( Steam ) games FWIW.

Gnome crashing while playing Diablo 4 via Lutris (Fedora 40)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. September 2024 - 17:43

Hey everyone,

I'm very new to Linux. I'm using Fedora 40 as my new main distro, and so far, everything has worked quite well. However, today I encountered my first real issue while playing Diablo 4 via Lutris. After about 30 minutes, my GNOME session completely crashed, and I was sent back to the login screen. This has happened to me a few times.

This is the error message i got from my log application:

https://preview.redd.it/2e23fbfbx7md1.png?width=2453&format=png&auto=webp&s=03c92f4b2e775ce806f93e375ba17552a285b99b

I hope someone can help me find out what this is.

I am using a amd 6700xt with a amd ryzen 5 5600.

Thanks for the help!

Lethal Company not working.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. September 2024 - 16:22

So, I want to play Lethal Company since it was a game I used to play. And, I first tried downloading steam, and opening it from there, and it didn’t work. I turned on the compatibly and force compatibility, and still, nothing. I changed my drivers, and it finally let me into the game, but it only showed me the unity sign, the game / creator, and there was a black screen with the mouse in the game, 10 seconds after it crashes with no error. I added back my NVIDIA drivers and I tried playing it again but then it says I need directx11 for some reason. I tried to download a cracked version of it instead and used wine to open it, but I had the same error when I changed my drivers. Please help me! D:

Kde Plasma 6: A battle between HDR and refresh rate

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. September 2024 - 16:17

Hi all,

I recently made the switch from Windows to Linux (Nobara - KDE Plasma 6 with Wayland) and have been having trouble getting HDR to work on my [AW3423DWF](https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/alienware-34-curved-qd-oled-gaming-monitor-aw3423dwf/apd/210-bfsb/monitors-monitor-accessories) monitor. Technically this monitor is advertised as being able to run at 165hz with HDR at 3440x1440 however that is only with 8bit HDR not 10bit. At 10bit HDR, the monitor's refresh rate is set to its next lowest mode which is unfortunately 100hz.

I did not experience this issue on Windows because Windows will automatically lower the HDR to 8bit with dithering which is supported by the monitor. There does seem to be workarounds to get 144hz or 165hz with 10bit HDR (see [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/ultrawidemasterrace/comments/18qszjp/comment/kexokww/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)) however all of these workarounds are Windows specific.

The new and experimental HDR support for KDE plasma 6 seems to be 10bit to my knowledge as I am unable to set my refresh rate to 165hz and am instead limited to 100hz. When I disable HDR I am able to get to 165hz. This is pretty disappointing to me and I'm wondering if anyone has a solution that either:

  1. Involves a Linux specific workaround similar to the Windows where I am able to get the monitor to 144hz or 165hz with 10bit HDR
  2. Downgrades the HDR on my OS to 8bit or 8bit + dithering so that I can make use of the full 165hz refresh rate
  3. Does some clever trick that I haven't thought of

My PC specs in case they matter:
Distro: Nobara 40 - NVIDIA
GPU: RTX 4090
CPU: Ryzen 9 5900X
RAM: 32GB
Motherboard: rog strix gaming wifi ii

Thanks in advance!

Is there a solution to PTT for Mumble and other apps in Wayland yet?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. September 2024 - 15:10

Mumble is a very nice FOSS client, but it can't detect keystrokes in wayland due to the security efforts.

What is the easiest way around this/has a solution been made yet. I read that on KDE you can do an X11 compatibility something or other, but I'm on GNOME.

Thanks!

Resolving Freezing and Internal Problems of Ubuntu 22.04 on Dell G15 gaming (2024)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. September 2024 - 15:08

Initial Problems:

  1. Ubuntu 22.04 Issues:
    • Screen Freezing: The system would occasionally freeze.
    • External Monitor Detection: The external monitor wasn’t being detected.
    • Booting Issues: Problems with system booting were also observed.
  2. Kernel Compatibility:
    • It turned out that these issues were related to the kernel version. Specifically, the newer kernel version (6.8) was not compatible with the Dell G15 hardware.

Solutions Implemented:

  1. Kernel Downgrade:
    • Problem: Kernel version 6.8 caused compatibility issues with the Dell G15 hardware.
    • Solution: We downgraded the kernel to version 6.5, which resolved the problems. Here’s how you can downgrade:
      1. Install the kernel version 6.5.
      2. Update GRUB to ensure the system boots with the selected kernel.
      3. Reboot and confirm the system is using the correct kernel.
  2. GPU Driver Adjustment:
    • Problem: The external monitor was not being detected, likely due to issues with the NVIDIA GPU driver.
    • Solution: We switched to the default GPU driver provided by Ubuntu, which resolved the monitor detection issue and improved system stability.

Conclusion:

  • Kernel Issues: For similar issues, checking the compatibility of the kernel with your hardware is crucial. Downgrading to a stable kernel version that supports your hardware can resolve many problems.
  • Driver Compatibility: Using compatible drivers can address problems with external monitor detection and overall performance.

Following these steps should help resolve the freezing and internal issues on your Dell G15 with Ubuntu 22.04. If you have questions or need further assistance, feel free to ask!

Random Frame-drops issue in both Linux native games and

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. September 2024 - 14:40

I am not much of a gamer but I play few titles CS2 and Witcher 3. I would get random frame-drops in witcher (from s/w cap 60 to 20) and I didn't think much of it thinking it might be just Proton issue but today when I played CS2 I got about 30 FPS (I used to get 144 (V-sync) consistent). I restarted the PC and problem was solved. Since, CS2 is a Linux compatible game I think there might be a different issue.

And after frame drops it doesn't go back to normal.

My system: CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7700 (16) @ 5.39 GHz GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT Memory: 16GB DDR5 SSD: Samsung evo 990 pro

Do you guys have an idea about the problem ?

Any body else gets a major boost when gaming on linux?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. September 2024 - 12:24

I have no need for a gaming laptop but enjoy doing some casual gaming whenever I feel like it, but for some reason, oems like installing defunct graphic drivers on their systems, with the mainline version always performing better and recieving regular updates, like for example intel iris xe igpu. They're supposed to have the intel arc drivers and get just that when you switch to the mainline, though unfortunately they have bad dx9,10,11 support.
