I've build a Steam Machine that runs on PS5 hardware

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. Dezember 2025 - 16:15

Link to the build video: https://youtu.be/x_8qHucPnIo?si=80mdG3YbWEoVkLZE

I have used the AMD BC-250, it's basically a PS5 board with 2 fewer cores and 12 CUs (essentially, it has 70% of the power of a PS5), and installing SteamOS on it via Bazzite works like a charm, all for less than €250 including the controller (I 3D printed the case, it's a custom design).

The video also includes some benchmarks :)

CtrlAssist v0.3.0: Controller Assist for gaming on Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. Dezember 2025 - 16:07

Announcing the release of CtrlAssist v0.3.0, which introduces significant new features and usability improvements. CtrlAssist brings "controller assist" functionality to Linux gaming by allowing multiple physical controllers to operate as a single virtual input device. This enables collaborative play and customizable gamepad setups, making it easier for players of all ages and abilities to enjoy games together.

Major Features System Tray Interface

This release introduces a graphical system tray application that provides desktop integration for managing controller multiplexing. Users can now:

  • Configure primary and assist controller assignments via dropdown menus
  • Start and stop the mux without using the command line
  • Adjust settings through a context menu interface
  • Receive desktop notifications for status changes
  • Persist configuration across sessions

The tray interface supports live reconfiguration of device-invariant settings (mux mode and rumble target) while the mux is running.

Multiple Hiding Strategies

Controller hiding now supports three distinct strategies:

  • None: No hiding, manual configuration required
  • Steam: Automatically manages Steam's controller blacklist via config.vdf modification
  • System: Restricts device permissions system-wide (requires root access)

The Steam hiding strategy enables proper functionality in sandboxed environments without requiring elevated privileges, addressing a key limitation for Flatpak users.

Live Runtime Updates

The mux runtime now supports dynamic reconfiguration without restart for:

  • Mux mode changes (Priority, Average, Toggle)
  • Rumble target adjustments (Primary, Assist, Both, None)

This functionality is available through both the system tray and programmatic (D-BUS) interfaces, allowing users to adapt behavior during gameplay sessions.

Flatpak Distribution

CtrlAssist is now packaged as a Flatpak application with:

  • Automated GitHub Actions workflow for release builds
  • Desktop entry and metainfo for application catalogs
  • Proper sandbox permissions for device access
  • Support for Steam configuration modifications within the sandbox

Flatpak bundles are automatically built and attached to GitHub releases.

Additional Improvements
  • Configuration persistence to $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/ctrlassist/config.toml
  • Controller selection by name with best-effort matching across sessions
  • Enhanced documentation with installation instructions for both Cargo and Flatpak
  • New pixel art banner and application icon (via Aseprite)
  • Improved force feedback device recovery after disconnection
  • Better error handling and user feedback throughout the application
Installation

CtrlAssist v0.3.0 can be installed via:

  • Cargo: cargo install ctrlassist --force
  • Flatpak: Download the bundle from the releases page and install with flatpak install

Full installation instructions are available in the README.

Breaking Changes

The --hide flag now requires an enum value (none, steam, system) instead of being a boolean flag. Users upgrading from v0.2.x should update their scripts accordingly:

  • Previous: ctrlassist mux --hide
  • Current: ctrlassist mux --hide system

Football Life/PES 2021 Linux Resolution Selector by Razor_AMG

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. Dezember 2025 - 15:48

Hi everyone,

For Linux players, here is the new version of the resolution selector for Football Life/PES 2021,

As you must know, if you play on linux (SteamOS, Bazzite, ChimeraOS or other...), it is impossible to change the game’s resolution, the settings.exe does not save the changes after closing the tool.

To solve this problem, I created settings.dat files for each resolution from Windows directly, all you have to do is replace the settings.dat file in your/KONAMI folder, I added all the most used resolutions in windowed and full screen mode, they all use 60FPS for gameplay and Replay, and Xinput for the controller (mandatory for Steam).

Resolution available in Windowed mode:

- 720p

- 800p

- 900p

- 1080p

- 1440p

Resolution available in Full Screen mode:

- 768p

- 1080p

- 1440p

- 2160p

It works for Football Life and PES 2021, I did not try for eFootball from the Steam Store but I think they kept the same file, please share it and let me know if it also works for eFootball.

Download

Enjoy!

Problem with optiscaler

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. Dezember 2025 - 14:47

I'm trying to play Ghost of Tsushima on Bazzite using OptiScaler. Everything seems fine, but when I launch the game, I get this screen saying it can't detect my GPU. If I accept it, everything works, and I get better results than with the FSR3 that comes with the game. I'm using a Radeon 780M. Does anyone know how to fix this? It's annoying having to change the controller settings every time I launch the game.

Hi everyone, I have been out of gaming for a few years, and few days ago built a new gaming pc. I installed win 11, and ran into this subreddit. So now I wonder would there be a big performance increase on my ryzen 5 9600x and 9070xt if I switch to linux?

I fixed VR controller tracking in MSFS2020 on Proton (my first code contribution to the Proton project!)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. Dezember 2025 - 12:36

Been wanting to contribute to Proton for a while and finally found a bug I could actually fix.

MSFS2020's VR controllers would spawn at your headset and refuse to track. After some digging through Wine debug logs, found that xrConvertWin32PerformanceCounterToTimeKHR in wineopenxr was stubbed as unimplemented. Games call QueryPerformanceCounter for timing and need to convert that to XrTime for pose prediction. Without it, the runtime gets 0x0 as the timestamp and can't predict where your controllers should be.

30 lines of code. Cost me 64GB of RAM overnight because building Proton is absolutely insane. Crashed my entire DE. Worth it.

Bonus: this also completes the last unimplemented functions in wineopenxr's openxr_loader.c.

PR: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/pull/9347

Prebuilt Bins in case you want to test it: https://github.com/PhialsBasement/Proton/releases/tag/msfs-fix

If anyone else has been wanting to contribute but feels intimidated, just find a bug that pisses you off enough. That's apparently all the motivation you need.

Used RX 5700XT 1080p gaming

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. Dezember 2025 - 12:25

Hello:)

I currently have an old GTX 1070. I'm in the process of transitioning to linux, but I've heard how the pascal generation of cards tend to struggle with DX12, as well as having poor driver support (nvidea in general).

I'm considering upgrading my GPU, but prices are fairly high in my country. I can get a new RX 7600 (non XT) for about $340, or a used RX 5700XT for about $220.

The 7600 is a little out of my budget, but it would be doable after saving for a little longer.

The main thing I'm concerned about is the risk of buying a 2nd hand GPU that's isn't under warranty.

Since I'm playing on 1080p, I'm not super concerned about performance differences, but a newer card, with better support and a warranty might give the 7600 the edge.

I would appreciate any insight veterans of the space might have :) Thank you

Game won't launch anymore

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. Dezember 2025 - 11:55

Hey, I'm currently playing The Knightling on Steam. Game worked fine yesterday but this morning when I launch it, it stucks on the editor logo screen and I have to force quit.

The only thing I did is enabling resizable BAR and above 4G decoding in my BIOS. I went back to disable them but the game still gets stuck.

I tried using a different compatibility layer, using X11 instead of Wayland, launching through Heroic instead of Steam but it's always the same result.

I added PROTON_LOG=1 %command% to get a crash log but it's very long.

This line comes the most :

1529.320:0148:014c:trace:unwind:RtlGrowFunctionTable 000000007017E7A0

With this one sometimes inbetween :

1529.320:0148:014c:trace:unwind:RtlAddGrowableFunctionTable 000000007026BE08, 00000000702CE6C0, 0, 513, 70be0000, 70bf0000

My PC is on Debian 13 / Gnome 48 / Kernel 6.12 / Steam native package

Should I change GPU?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. Dezember 2025 - 11:22

Hi the question is pretty simple but it's not an easy answer.

I currently have an rtx 4070s and I switched to Manjaro a few weeks ago. I obviously noticed a loss in performance for DirectX games, the question is should I switch to an RX 9700-xt? I can buy one for around 600 euros and I think that I will be able to sell the 4070s pretty easily (given also the rumors of Nvidia cutting production). So what do you think? Is the upgrade in performance that noticeable?

Migrating to Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. Dezember 2025 - 10:10

I've been dabbling into Linux for a bit now on my laptop, mainly with Mint. And with the sorry excuse of an "OS" that windows is becoming, I've decided to just fully migrate to Linux on my main PC (runs a 9070 XT and an 15-14600KF).

I'm mainly gonna game on it, so I don't worry much about compatibility problems with productivy software. Although I know online games don't like Linux much, as they can't run their spyware rootkits disguised as anticheats on it, but thats a given when migrating to Linux.

What I wanted to know is if there are any pro/important tips to getting the best and cleanest setup to get going on my fresh installation, for eg: specific programs or tinkering.

And also, which distro would fit my case the best? I've been thinking about 3 options: Mint, Bazzite, and CachyOS. What would you guys recommend of the three and why?

And as one last small question, will I have any problems with my CPU's E-cores and P-cores thing going on? As from what I understand those are built for windows 11 specifically.
