How to make dualsense touchpad stop working as a mouse? On Gnome 48.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 25. Mai 2025 - 20:33

Essentially, I want to set, on steam input, the touchpad to be L3 on the left side and R3 on the right side on retroarch via steam input by launching it on steam, but it only cares about mouse input unless it supports it by default (like ANIMAL WELL).

I want to install Linux on an older laptop and have questions

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 25. Mai 2025 - 20:20

I have read through the faq but admit a lot of it doesn't make a lot of sense to me, probably because there are so many names and with no experience except my steam deck I'm probably mixing stuff up.

The laptop is an ASUS gl702vm ds74

I7 7700HQ, 16gb ram, gtx 1060 6gb

What I want is a gaming build specifically good at running older stuff from dos to windows xp, windows 7 if possible. I already have a great PC and laptop for modern gaming, what I want is something to bring with me for playing older and what I consider better games, and something I can install GoG to. A bonus would be a windows 98 or XP look and feel.

Are there any obvious suggestions someone can make? And is there a good video or creator I can check out that will make all this easier for me? I am experienced in building and setting up windows, but have had mixed responses as to how similar it is and would rather ask now that after I muck something up and need to untangle a mess that could have been avoided lol.

Frustrated with Warthunder's Poor Linux Performance – Anyone Else?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 25. Mai 2025 - 20:18

I recently made the switch to Linux and overall, I'm really happy with it. In most cases, games run better than they did on Windows, especially with my full AMD setup — which I know tends to play nicely with Linux drivers.

However, the one major exception — and ironically, the game I play the most — is Warthunder. It's practically unplayable on Linux. I regularly get 30–50 FPS during matches, and occasionally it’ll spike up to 300 FPS for one game… only to tank right back down after. It feels completely inconsistent and unstable.

I genuinely appreciate that Gaijin provides a native Linux client — that alone puts them ahead of many developers. But at the same time, it seems like the Linux version is more of a token effort. There doesn't appear to be any real optimization or support, and the performance gap is massive compared to Windows.

I even tried running the game through Proton, and surprisingly, the performance was better than on Windows. But that’s not really an option, because the anti-cheat is disabled when using Proton, which locks us out of regular multiplayer. This has apparently been a known issue for a long time, based on what I’ve seen on the forums, yet nothing's been done to fix it.

It’s frustrating to see this level of neglect, especially when Linux gaming is clearly growing. I’d love to keep supporting native clients, but experiences like this make it really difficult. Anyone else in the same boat?

Would you play a sci-fi RPG where you control both sides of a broken friendship turned hostile inside a Dyson Sphere?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 25. Mai 2025 - 20:14

Hey folks, I’m building a story-driven sci-fi RPG called The Last Ring. The setup? Two childhood friends—once inseparable—are now on opposite sides of a violent, unraveling Dyson Sphere society.

You play as both:

Kade, a low-tier salvager from the Outer Ring. His family, part of a criminal network, gets wiped out in a military raid—he survives barely, presumed dead, left behind in a broken exo-suit.

Ray, his former best friend. Now a special ops soldier, tasked with cleaning up lawless zones. He unknowingly leads the purge that kills Kade’s family.

No supernatural powers, no chosen ones—just pure sci-fi grounded in tech, politics, betrayal, and survival. As the player, you switch between both POVs. Your actions as Ray might make life harder for Kade… or vice versa.

We’re toying with mechanics like memory fragments (earned through missions), factions with evolving alliances, and a robot ally salvaged by Kade. There’s moral grey in every direction.

The story’s personal. Brutal. And the Sphere is falling apart.

I’m looking for advice from you all:

Would this kind of dual-protagonist structure work for you?

Does playing both characters add depth or kill the mystery?

Any story-driven games you love that handled this well?

All feedback—praise, critique, spicy takes—super welcome. I want this to hit hard emotionally and mechanically.

Issues while installing games on Lutris on the SteamDeck

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 25. Mai 2025 - 19:44

So, this is a post by the request of a friend. I personally do not have a SteamDeck, but I do daily drive Arch Linux, by the way.

Okay so he has games installed via Steam, and those work fine.

So he is trying to install games on Lutris, from what I could see looking at his screen, he had everything in tact. But he faced severe issues, the likes of which I had never seen. Games launch for a split second and then crash to the desktop (desktop mode).

I was quick to tell him to show the startup logs. I checked if the prefix was a 32bit one and if he was running a 64 bit version of wine, but that was not the case.

I then to told him to follow this guide: https://www.gloriouseggroll.tv/how-to-get-out-of-wine-dependency-hell/

That did not go well, as this this is what it brought up.

I quickly fixed that with the sudo steamos-readonly disable command, but that also did not fix the issue.

After that I was thinking of going forward into the rabbit hole. But then I paused for a second, I realised that this should not be this hard. I thought to myself, I must be doing something really wrong.

So here I am, has anyone encountered stuff like this happening? I have never had a SteamDeck, so I cannot relate to this issue. Could you please tell me how to install Lutris on this thing?

Thanks for reading!

Linux (SteamOS) vs Windows benchmarks on Legion Go S by Dave2D

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 25. Mai 2025 - 19:29

Finally, some apples to apples comparison (for the most part).

Original video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJXp3UYj50Q

Dave2D also notes that the experience on SteamOS is just so much smoother, particularly pointing out that Windows still can't reliably sleep, especially when in-game, while SteamOS is perfect every time.

Has anyone tried running retro emulators inside a Windows VM on Linux, just for the irony?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 25. Mai 2025 - 18:53

Okay, hear me out. I was messing with some retro games and got them working beautifully on Linux-native emulators. But just for fun (and maybe pain), I tried running a Windows VM inside my Linux system, and then installed a Windows-only emulator inside that, and ran an old SNES game. It actually worked… with some hiccups.

Obviously, this makes zero practical sense. But it got me wondering: has anyone else gone full galaxy brain and layered your gaming setups in hilariously inefficient ways just to see if it’s possible? Linux host → Windows VM → Windows-only launcher → emulator → game. Why? No idea. But it was kind of fun.

Anyone else tried something like this, just because you could?

Can someone guide me through this process? Oblivion remastered not launching.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 25. Mai 2025 - 18:50

(not sure which flair to use but this falls under steam as well)

As the title says, Oblivion remastered is not launching. I tried running it through proton experimental, proton 9, proton 8 through steam. It just doesn't launch. I've scoured through ProtonDB and found nothing similar. The game is listed as "Platinum" so I thought it should run without any issue... The play button will switch to "launching.." then after 2 seconds it reverts back to just "Play". No other signs or presentations. It downloaded fine. I am a total noob in regards to linux. I just switched over yesterday, so a lot of the terminology and processes I am still learning. I am running a dual boot with windows 11, where windows is on an NTFS ssd and my linux mint is on another ssd. The ssd with windows has a partition that I've designated as the game storage area.

Is there anything one can do to improve Steam flatpak performance or is it perfectly set-up out-of-the-box?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 25. Mai 2025 - 18:33

I've heard in the past one was to add dxvk=async to launch options, which apparently no longer does anything, and it got me wondering if there's anything I should do to improve how it runs games.

(I run it through flatpak due to 32bit libs, as they messed my system up in the past, and I refuse to let them out of the containment. If Steam ever turns to 64bit on Linux, I'd install it directly.)

I don't know how to follow the rules, because of how vague they are. So I will get straight to the point. How do I install a Kernel on a Linux distro, BEFORE I put the Linux distro on a flash drive?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 25. Mai 2025 - 18:33

The way I understand it,
1. Rufus or Ventoy USB Maker
2. Linux Distro, with Kernel already on it.
3. Put Linux distro on the USB.
4. Boot from USB
5. Install OS

flatpak MangoHUD not working with OpenGL

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 25. Mai 2025 - 18:06

The game is The Long Dark, and for the past few years there is a workaround suggested by the developers to make the game run better on Linux, because after an update Linux systems had some performance issues. In my case the game starts to stutter quite badly after ~40 min of gameplay. That happens either with native Linux or Proton-GE.

So I tried the workaround, which is -force-glcore forcing OpenGL as the renderer. Doing this while running the proton-ge version introduces some weird lagging and visual glitches, so I decided to try running the native Linux version, and the game runs much better, with only some weird mouse input, but it's manageable.

The issue is MangoHUD doesn't seem to work anymore. I've read the Github page and there are two recommendations concerning MangoHUD and OpenGL. The first one is DLSYM, so I tried two commands mangohud --dlsym and MANGOHUD_DLSYM=0 also I tried MANGOHUD_DLSYM=1 after reading other sources saying that it needs to be enabled, although it should be enabled by default.

Now the second recommendation I'm a bit confused. Here's what Github page says:

Some Linux native OpenGL games overrides LD_PRELOAD and stops MangoHud from working. You can sometimes fix this by editing LD_PRELOAD in the start script LD_PRELOAD=/path/to/mangohud/lib/

I tried adding the path to libMangoHud_opengl.so as command in Steam's launch options like this

LD_PRELOAD=/var/lib/flatpak/runtime/org.freedesktop.Platform.VulkanLayer.MangoHud/x86_64/24.08/active/files/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libMangoHud_opengl.so __NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia __VK_LAYER_NV_optimus=NVIDIA_only gamemoderun mangohud MANGOHUD_CONFIG=fps_limit=30 %command% -force-glcore

But MangoHUD still doesn't work. Even tried using different .so files, but nothing changes. I checked /usr/lib/ just to be sure there wasn't a MangoHUD directory there I could use, but since I'm using flatpak MangoHUD there's nothing there.

Software mentioned:

  • flatpak Steam 1.0.0.81
  • flatpak MangoHUD 0.8.1

Intel iris 80EUs performance on Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 25. Mai 2025 - 18:01

Yes, I know some of you may be wanting to say that Intel Iris is not good for gaming and I should upgrade my gpu, and to that I say, I'm not into really heavy gaming, I play some heavy games but they perform quite ok on windows and I can't upgrade my setup rn, so please, don't even bother saying I should upgrade my setup. With that out of the way, My specs are:

I5 1235U Intel iris 80EUs 24gb ram

All the games I played performed better on windows: Metal bringer (from the same dev as samurai bringer), monster hunter world and The citadel. I was playing on CachyOs btw. With MHW on linux I was getting an average of 26-35 fps, on windows I'm getting 30-49 with the exact same settings. Metal bringer performed ok on linux, average of 40-50 in-game and 25-28 fps on the main menu, but on windows I'm getting 59-60 fps in-game and 30 fps in the main menu (for some reason the heaviest part of this game is the main menu). The citadel also performed great, had an average of 30-40 fps on Linux in pretty much all areas and on windows I'm getting 50-60 in average, and when there are too much stuff going on in the screen I got something like 26-30 fps on linux and 30-35 on windows.

I'm really confused rn because I wanted to stay on Linux full time but gaming seems so much better on windows in my case, any advice?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 25. Mai 2025 - 17:46

again, only some games break it. Later alligator for example works just fine but when starting vivid stasis for example, my entire audio dies as long as the game is active. Everything is just silent, the browser stops loading video and audio and not even the setting audio test works while the game is open. And after closing, it everything else just works like before again. I alr tried forcing diff proton versions (experimental, hotfix and the latest stable one)

Black screen when gaming

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 25. Mai 2025 - 17:00

Hello everybody, I recently got my PC to finally work and installed Bazzite because I heard it's good for gaming, but whenever I try to start a game in full screen I just get a black screen for some reason. I already checked if I had a driver installed and the Hardware Probe said yes, and I don't know what else it could be. I use an AMD RADEON RX 7600, so maybe it has something to do with that? Edit: I forgot to add that the games do actually work, as I can hear them as well as see them when I'm alt-tabbed or launching them in windowed mode. Some simpler games like Balatro or Cookie Clicker actually do work while in full screen, but it takes like 5 seconds after starting that I actually see something
