GPU crashing on demanding games? Please help idk what could be the problem.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31. August 2025 - 01:25

I'm on bazzite with a Ryzen 7 9700X and 7800 XT, with a 1440p monitor.

I'm usually not interested in the newest pretties games but now 2 games are giving me a headache.

Stalker 2 and lost soul aside both do this, or to be more precise it's after them.

The games themselves run fine without issues but if I quit the games and try to turn off my computer my main monitor hangs on a black screen and my secondary turns full green and I have to force shutdown by holding the power button.

If I don't want to do that and go back playing later, half the screen will flicker until it dies similarly a couple of minutes later. And after a forced shutdown and turn on later the game runs fine and if I do it this way, if I want shutdown the PC after I'm done it does it normally instead of dying.

I don't really think it could be hardware because I played throught stellar blade without a single issue at max settings, and FF 15 at max settings with 4k textures(yes on a 1440p monitor) without issues.

No other games or tasks show any abnormalities outside of these 2.

I'm playing stalker 2 with GE 10-12 at high setting(so not the highest) and LSA on epic settings(one below the highest), without ray tracing, with GE 10-15(I think that was the latest)

I really don't think it could be a hardware issue, my PC isn't even half a year old and everything was brand new. But I really have no idea what could be the problem. I am on the latest version of bazzite(kde no gaming mode) because I ran the updater icon basically every day.

Pegasus frontend with 49 systems in CachyOS

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31. August 2025 - 00:21

Been using emulators for years, always wanted to ditch Windows, but there was always some system that just worked better in Windows, like PS2 or N64. Fast forward to today and I finally have all my games in Linux in one frontend and looking/running good. Emulationstation is great and I used it a bunch on the PI, but the desktop version forces a folder structure I can't deal with so I tried Pegasus. It takes getting used to like any software, but it's pretty amazing. Once you get used to Skyscraper for scraping from the command line you can create metadata files for all your games, the nice thing about this is, for instance, I had to reinstall linux (cachyos) due to being a noob to this distro and breaking it horribly. Since Pegasus uses metadata files it's super freakin easy to get everything setup again, all I had to do was backup the game_dirs.txt file and then add it to the new install of Pegasus and everything is there. I still had to setup retroarch and some other emulators, but the frontend could not be easier.

I tried a bunch of themes, but I like the default theme best so I kept it, but made a bunch of custom changes/fixes. For instance I changed the top bar to show 49 systems and I fixed the grid to go back to last game after closing emulator, it was going back to the start of list each time. For all I know this is a linux bug and Windows peeps don't even have this issue, anyway I made a github repo and put my custom theme in it if anyone want to try it out or grab some of the fixes from the code and use them. I made another change so you can easily change the platform name in the top bar, I tried to list all the changes in the github readme, hopefully I remembered them all.

https://github.com/daveerwin1/pegasus-custom-theme

It took 6 emulators for 8 systems and retroarch for all the rest. PS3 was tricky cause all my games are iso, so I made a script to mount iso, run the game, then unmount iso. It's slow on close, but works great.

The only emulator that didn't have a way to set hotkey for close was cemu, so I made a script to load an antimicrox profile with hotkey mapped to alt + F4 that runs prior to game and closes after game, just so I can close everything from controller. I can now sit on my lazy ass and play 20,000 games w/o touching a keyboard :)

During this journey I discovered BigPEmu, wow. Virtual Jaguar has always sucked big time so I pretty much wrote off emulating that system. Then BigPEmu comes along and now every game runs 100% perfect, other notables cemu, dolphin, xemu, rpcs3, yuzu, and of course retroarch which has cores from so many emulators. So many great projects by awesome people, it's truly amazing.

Cemu actually crashes a lot, but I tracked the issue to my video card having only 3GB vram, PS3 emulation is spotty as well, but my PC is almost 10 years old at this point so considering that I'm more that happy with what it can emulate.

FG / DLSS mod on linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. August 2025 - 23:49

Hi, I recently found these 2 projects on github to install a fsr3 fg/dlss enabler mod and a vulkan lossless scaling layer.

https://github.com/FakeMichau/fgmod
https://github.com/PancakeTAS/lsfg-vk

Did someone tried these yet? Are they safe to install or a bit sketchy to you?

PoE 2 has a free weekend currently going and it works on Linux!

My apologies for a terrible waybar setup 🙂

I'd suggest anyone to try it out and see if it works but be mindful that it's a 100GB+ download.

What I also noticed is that it wants a lot of CPU, my Ryzen 8500G really struggles with everything maxed out (RTX 3080 can do stable 60 at 4K easily) and I should definitely upgrade. Reason is my 7900x died and I decided to buy a cheap one to just get me through the RMA process. Anyway, I digress.

I think we should show some support for game developers that don't prevent their games running on Linux.

Steam games not using my dedicated GPU

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. August 2025 - 22:09

I recently built a PC and installed Kubuntu on it. When I started playing Geometry Dash, I noticed my framerate wasn't stable, which was weird because this PC should've been a noticeable upgrade from my gaming laptop. My GPU fans weren't spinning much, so I checked the system monitor, and whenever GD was open, my integrated GPU usage went up, and vice versa. I installed Mangohud so I could easily check a lot of games, and none of them regularly used my dGPU.

I tested this on 5 OpenGL games (Geometry Dash, tModLoader, Celeste, Stardew Valley, and Moonstone Island) and 1 DXVK game (Palworld). Palworld used my dGPU for about a second near the start, but then only used my iGPU.

This issue happens out-of-the-box. My monitor is plugged into my GPU and no other monitors are attached. My launch options for all games I tested were:

mangohud %command%

And here's some specs I think are necessary to share:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 9600x

GPU: Intel Arc B580

Distro: Kubuntu 25.04

Kernel Version: 6.14.0-29 generic (64-bit)

It would be greatly appreciated if anyone could help me find a way to fix this.

NVIDIA or AMD for Linux gaming?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. August 2025 - 21:39

Thinking of switching over to Linux for gaming, Just wanted to make this post to ask something that I've been wondering about for a while

I'm considering upgrading from my 1660 SUPER to one of 2 GPUs

- 9060XT 16GB

- 5060Ti 16GB

Both have similar performance on Windows from what I've seen, so that's not really a concern

From what I've seen, the 9060XT is best for Linux as AMD GPUs seem to be more stable, more compatible and don't have driver issues resulting in FPS loss

However, the 5060Ti does have some stuff exclusive to NVIDIA GPUs, like CUDA and NVENC, that might be important for me as I'm thinking of going into game dev and content creation

Was wondering whether NVIDIA GPUs are still bad enough on Linux that I should go with AMD and sacrifice the NVIDIA stuff, or if NVIDIA GPUs are okay now enough to the point where I can use them without worrying too much about stability and performance in games

Steam opens but the window is invisible.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. August 2025 - 21:37

When steam opens, it the window seems to copy whatever other windows were open on the desktop at the time. I’ve taken a photo to show here. Steam is actually open, as seen by my cursor hovering over one of the tabs in the picture. I have no clue how to fix this, I attempted to look up solutions, changed PerfersNonDefaultGPU to false, but so far nothing has worked.

I am very new to Linux, so I really have no idea what I’m doing here. Any help is appreciated.

Previous Post wasn't good enough, so here is an actual benchmark of FSync vs NTSync

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. August 2025 - 20:02

https://flightlesssomething.ambrosia.one/benchmark/1747

Used Wine tkg staging 10.13 for both benchmarks, and no, offline mode doesn't improve anything, here's another benchmark that proves it.

The game benchmarked is Zenless Zone Zero

Switching gaming pc to Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. August 2025 - 19:55

I'm not really new to Linux in the slightest. Though I've always had a windows pc for gaming. Though with a recent windows update giving me an $8k paperweight I'm cutting off Microsoft permanently. One of the last reasons I've hung onto Microsoft was not looking into whether or not I can reasonable run world of warcraft on Linux and have it be performant. However in light of the costly mistake of continuing to trust Microsoft I'm ready to either completely cancel the wow subscription or try to get it running on Linux.

Any pointers or tips or experiences running world of warcraft on Linux?

Running Beyond All Reason on Dual GPU Laptop CachyOS

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. August 2025 - 19:50

Hi, I am launching BAR on Linux CachyOS using appimage file.

I have Xiaomi Pro Book 15.6 laptop with dual GPU and Nvidia MX 150 Dedicated GPU. Desktop env: KDE Plasma on Wayland.

I'm trying to force the game to use dedicated graphics card but no luck yet. I've tried to start launcher with the "prime-run" property, but when in game - I still get the warning that Intel GPU is used.

When I launch games using steam - PRIME Offload works fine, but BAR has a dedicated launcher written in electron, that lauches spring app.

Accortdin to CachyOS wiki and Arch docs PRIME Offload is the way, but it doesn't work for me in this case.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/PRIME#Configure_applications_to_render_using_GPU

Not a linux expert, so I'll appreciate any help here.

freez when playing games. However after 1-3 minutes it starts stuttering and after another 30 seconds everything is ok again.. Is that a sign of overheating or something?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. August 2025 - 19:32

i am very confused why this happens. It only started less than a week ago and i did not do anything major. i think. Happened on No mans sky; Wuthering waves; and Path of exile 2.
Also i have noticed that my fans dont spin faster even when i am reaching 80°C+. i am very confused on how to fix that. i had that issue with windows many years ago too, but fixed it with bios setting. however now these setting dont exist anymore (or something(MSi Motherboard)).
The only thing that might have something to do with it, that i used Windows recently (on another drive) and i have hear that windows likes to break things...

Please help. i am lost and have no idea what to do......

No Man's Sky VR

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. August 2025 - 19:31

So, I've generally gotten VR to work for most things pretty damn well, but this one is proving to be a pain. Starting No Man's Sky through SteamVR does the expected thing that it does in a lot of other games, laggy tracking and a lotta ghosting, looking like really low FPS. If I use Monado, the game itself seems to work ok, but the controls are all broken. Snap turning doesn't function at all, smooth turning stays at max speed no matter how low I set the sensitivity, and the grip controls don't work at all once inside a ship, so I can't grab the handle to exit. It also seems that the icons for a lot of the controls in the tutorial are replaced with exclamation points in a yellow triangle. Seems something about going through Monado is breaking the way NMS reads my controllers.

GTA 5 Enhanced - No Surround Sound

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. August 2025 - 18:59

Anyone know how to get surround sound working for this game?

Seems they removed the in game settings from the enhanced edition in favor of querying the Operating System but it's not detecting my 5.1 setup.
