I'm a Windows gamer, and I have some questions.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. September 2024 - 16:13

Hey! As the title says, I've been using Windows for about 12 years (which is the vast majority of my life), and I'm starting to see it deteriorate in front of me. So, I thought to ask you all:

  1. What Linux distros do y'all recommend? I've heard Ubuntu is good, but I'm open to suggestions.
  2. Can Linux run pretty much every game in my library, or would I have to be willing to sacrifice some games?
  3. Any extensive steps to get my 3070 and i7 working?

That's about all. Thanks for reading!

Mouse duplicates or ignores scroll input.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. September 2024 - 15:12

For some reason, whenever I scroll with my mouse, it sometimes skips the input or duplicates it. This causes the game to either not go to the next item/weapon twice or not do it at all. This does not seem to happen on my Windows partition.

I especially notice it in Minecraft. If I scroll the the item on the hotbar, it sometimes ignores the input or goes ahead two spots.

Example videos:

What can I do to fix this? The only related issue I found is this thread, but I don't really understand how I can apply the solution to my specific system. I have also tried changing the scroll speed in KDE, but this basically makes the issue worse.

The mouse I am using is a Logitech G502 Lightspeed.

OS is Aurora OS (DX + Nvidia) from Universal Blue, which uses KDE on Wayland

Which Distro? Noob tips please!

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. September 2024 - 15:00

Hi Reddit,

So, just about to take delivery of my shiny new gaming PC and I don't want to pollute it with Windows if I can help it. Looking for some advice on any distro's you'd recommend and window managers etc. I've commercially support 'nix for many years (CentOS/SuSE) but never really looked to play games on it.

I've heard good things about Garuda, CachyOS and Nobara but that arguments rage around KDE/Gnome etc.

So, specs for new PC: AMD 7800X3d, RTX 4080 Super, 32Gb DDR5 with 3 monitors, 1x Aorus FO48u OLED 4k and 2x Philips Envina 2k to be used in portrait - all monitors support HDR.

Based on my own research, I'm leaning towards CachyOS with KDE - is that going to be a pain to setup HDR properly? Will it support a 3 monitors setup etc?

Thanks

ChimeraOS Vs. Bazzite Vs. Nobara for my use case?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. September 2024 - 14:33

I understand that Nobara and Bazzite are both Fedora-based and ChimeraOS is Arch-based. Beyond that, I don't really know what sets them apart from each other.

I have an AMD-based PC: 7800X3d, 7900XTX, etc...

It's in my living room and connected to my large OLED TV. I plan on dual booting Windows and some form of Linux, each one will be on a different m.2 drive and Windows will be used only for games that absolutely will not run in Linux.

99% of the use case for this computer will be gaming. However, I still want a workable desktop mode that will allow me to browse the web, transfer files via FTP, etc...

My #1 requirement is working Gamescope with HDR support. I know Bazzite has this, as I've played around with it. Do Chimera and Nobara also have this?

#2 requirement: The ability to run Emudeck and emulators.

#3 requirement: Easy access to non-Steam launchers.

The fact that one individual maintains Nobara bothers me. It's probably my 3rd choice of OS, unless someone can give me a "killer app" sort of reason why I should install Nobara over the other two.

That leaves Bazzite and Chimera. Is there a reason to choose one over the other, beyond "I like Fedora" vs. "I like Arch?" If so, what is it?

What issues have you encountered with Chimera vs Bazzite? What made you choose one over the other?

Planning on buying a gaming wheel, what is the support like?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. September 2024 - 13:37

(Google throws info relevant to Logitech and nothing else)

I plan to purchase a cheap wheel. Currently I have my eye on Tracer and Sven and Cobra SW 2020. Does anyone know whether they work on Linux (I don't care about bonus features like FFB or "this specific button does this specific thing", I care that the wheel + pedals + buttons work in general, i.e. that it is recognized as an input device)

How to fix Steam on 4k screen?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. September 2024 - 12:52

Steam is really pissing me off lately because I edited the .desktop files in /usr/lib/steam/steam.desktop and also on ~/Desktop/steam.desktop and added the -forcedesktopscaling=1.75 flag so that everything stops being tiny.

But sometimes it works and other times, Steam decides to ignore the flag and make everything tiny anyway for whatever reason. This is driving me nuts because I have to exit Steam and reopen it a dozen times for it to randomly accept the command line switch.

I'm using Gnome and idk which one of the .desktop files is being used from the launcher because Gnome doesn't allow you to right click and edit Desktop shortcuts for whatever reason. The Gnome devs must really hate power users. Either way, I edited all the steam.desktop files I could find on my system and added the -forcedesktopscaling=1.75 there.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Square Enix invests into Playtron.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. September 2024 - 12:43

If you are not already aware Playtron is working on a Linux-based OS for gaming handhelds.

Square Enix a games publisher and developer has invested in the company (Playtron).

Is this a sign Linux Gaming is being taken seriously by gaming studios?

I need a tuotiral on dual booting with multiple harddrives

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. September 2024 - 12:41

I want my computer to ask me when starting up which drive i wish to boot into, i am new to both dual booting and quite new to linux, i intend to use mint, as it is very beginner friendly from what i have heard. Unfortunately i am unsure of how exactly to go about doing this. Is it as simple as installing mint on my other drive or what? I already run a full windows 11 setup on one drive.

[Fedora 40/Bazzite Stable, Kinoite, KDE Plasma 6.1.4 KWin Wayland] Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop will not start no matter what.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. September 2024 - 12:37

Hello, recently I've tried to find a way to play Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop (a game on Steam) but so far I could not find any success. The game does not have a native Linux version, it's Windows-only, and any compatibility tool I tried using through Steam did not work. All it would do is pop up a window saying that the game is launching (as usual), and then nothing happens. The green play button returns to normal and no window or error appears.

Though, there's a different story when I launch the executable using wine in the game's directory. It actually loads in. The problem is - is that I can't do anything with it cause Steam isn't running. Basically giving me the only option to Quit, I can't even open the dev console. Maybe I can but I haven't explored all options yet, but basically: Run through Steam, game won't start, run executable using wine, game starts but not in a functional state.

I also tried using Lutris and screwed around with the settings, even using the two installers that were offered for the game in search. Nothing. There's just no way to go around it and I don't know what to do. The developers promised a Linux version about like... five or six years ago? And nohing happened with that. Can't do anything with this problem.

Is there a way to automatically launch all games on dGPU?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. September 2024 - 12:17

I experience low fps on many games because as far as I understood, they were running on my integrated gpu, but I want them to run on my dedicated one without manually turning the prime for each game. Is there a way to do it?

The Spanish game development scene does not get much attention paid to it, especially when compared to some of its other European counterparts, but sometimes you encounter polymaths like Ángel Ortega that deserve to be highlighted. There is a real auteur talent here that was impossible for me not to appreciate.

Heading back to debloated Windows after another disappointing attempt at Linux for gaming and work.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. September 2024 - 10:01

Title says it all. After my third attempt, I'm back on debloated Windows. While this time it was closer than before, for a non-technical person, LInux still isn't ready. I've tried various flavors of Debian and Fedora atomic, including Bazzite. My benchmark is Rocket League, which isn't a resource heavy game. Yet, even Bazzite struggled with the low settings while on Windows it hums along at max settings at 240 fps. It's frustratingly perplexing. The rare (ahem) times I try a quacked game, the extra layers of hit or miss experimenting with dependencies made me think, why the heck am I bothering with all this?

Also, I mostly live in a file explorer. Coming from Total Commander and Directory Opus with high density and functionality, Files felt like a dumbed down version of Windows Explorer. I tried installing other flatpacks like Konqueror and Dolphin File Manager. Each were visually broken in little annoying ways.

Surprisingly, what I miss the most is Bazzite's Gnome Desktop. I loved the beautiful, minimalist workflow experience. It was a beautiful experience. Now that I'm back on Win10, it feels old and stale. I wish I could replace the Win10 desktop with Gnome Desktop...

A Quick Update to SteamDeckHQ Being Banned From r/SteamDeck - From SteamDeckHQ's Creator

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. September 2024 - 08:06

Hi Everyone! I wanted to post a quick update here since there was a post in this sub about SteamDeckHQ being banned from r/SteamDeck. As the creator of the website, I really appreciate all of your support and kind words, so thank you for taking the time to comment, DM me words of encouragement, or just mention how you like the site.

For a quick background, we learned last week that our website, which is a press outlet (recognized by the industry) that focuses solely on the Steam Deck was on a "not approved" list on the Steam Deck subreddit. This was discovered by someone outside of our website who wanted to post one of our links, but couldn't. Our running theory as to why is that it could be due to us creating r/steamdeckhq, but nothing has been confirmed.

After being personally targeted by the mods of that sub and my posts were constantly taken down, even if they weren't related to my website, I felt this was the final straw. I posted about this on Twitter/X, and it gained traction, prompting the post here on r/linux_gaming and some awesome individuals who risked their accounts to ask the moderators why the website was essentially blacklisted, but to no avail. The mods shut down the posts 1 hour after being live, and each one gained a ton of traction in that short time. Regardless, I wanted to update everyone about what has happened since.

After noticing the ban, I contacted the mod team there and was met with silence for a couple of days. I did try to follow up a couple of times, but spaced it out so I wasn't constantly messaging to not become spam. While I did that, one of our writers, Oliver, made the first post on the sub asking the mods why. His post was subsequently taken down 1 hour in, and we were at a standstill. Not long after that, my account was muted, so I couldn't contact the mod team for 3 days. I planned to wait it out and follow up again after, but I didn't have the chance.

Another user outside of SteamDeckHQ posted about our predicament after I posted on Twitter/X about me being muted, which I decided to do since I feel like I should be transparent with the process and what is happening since I went public with it to begin with. Both Oliver and I were responding to comments on the post. We did not link to our subreddit, and instead were mostly thanking people for their support and questioning why the mods would act like this without insulting them.

The post was taken down 1 hour later and Oliver was banned from the subreddit. His comment that led to the ban was mostly rehashing what I was saying and I was not banned. A couple of hours later, I did end up getting banned myself, with my comment apparently breaking community rules. I posted the picture of the comment on Imgur to be viewed. I also can't contact the mods to inquire why since I am still muted, so it's dead in the water for the time being.

While I do know of the issues revolving around Wasabi (head mod of the sub), I still had hope because the subreddit started off so well. I had fond memories of checking the tracking bot and see how people were getting games running on the Deck, but it has morphed into Instagram with tons of pictures of the Deck and little substance, and tons of bans for any sort of critique or question.

Currently, I am going to focus on running our own subreddit, r/steamdeckhq, and try to grow it. I want to recreate what the old sub was: Focus on actual information, news, guides, and mods, all while embracing the incredible Steam Deck/Linux community and being completely open to critiques/criticisms. It will be where we are mainly active, but we encourage the community to post there since we will NOT take down guides or mods that the community puts their hard work into creating.

I would also love to hear from others who have been banned! If you have also been banned, let us know. If you have a picture of the exact post or comment that led to your ban, I would love to see it.

Thank you again for all of your support, and I will continue to update on our subreddit and Twitter/X so I don't spam in this sub. I will be around r/Linux_gaming more often as well, but primarily on our own subreddit.

Trouble launching games via Heroic launcher on Steam deck - no flatpak file found

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. September 2024 - 08:02

So I've setup heroic launcher on my steam deck and linked it to my gog account. Installed a few games and some work, but I'm trying to run Riven and I get an error in the log file and it closes immediately. I'm using latest proton experimental.

The error in question:

"File not found error - no such file or directory: 'flatpak' "

I gather a flatpak is how the windows application is packaged to run on the proton Linux version, but I don't know how the flatpak is made. Do I need to manually create the file? How do I do this if required?

I've tried older versions of Proton and wine, but I still get the same error. I'm kind of lost on what to do next.

God of War not launching

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. September 2024 - 07:55

Hello,
I am unable to launch God of War, it launches for a second and then immediately closes. Protondb says its a gold game, no recent problems. I ran steam from the terminal and this is the result here, LOGS

I recently changed my GPU from Nvidia to AMD, I started the game in Nvidia and it opened. I just wanted to upgrade my GPU then start playing. I am running Nobara, AMD GPU and CPU. I have mesa-vulkan-drivers installed. The drive is ext4 and not NTFS (this is a common cause of similar issues)
