When will monitor overclocking (Increase refresh rate beyond the stock monitor rate) be available on NVIDIA Graphics under Wayland?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. September 2024 - 23:15

I've searched everywhere and it seems there is no information regarding monitor overclocking with NVIDIA graphics under Wayland. And I have even tried overclocking my modest 60hz monitor on X11 with xrandr with no success whatsoever, maybe it's because I'm using the property drivers? IDK, and to be honest it's not like I can even use the open source alternatives like Nouveau because I have a Pascal GTX 1060, and they're not very supported when it comes to open source....

If you have any way to overclock monitors under Wayland with NVIDIA Graphics I'd be so grateful for the help. Otherwise if you have any information about this, feel free to tell me about it. :D

And yeah, i know it's not recommended to do this, but I already overclocked my monitor to 79hz on Windows with total success and i love the smoothness, and I can't live without it :'(

I have a BENQ GW2265 if you're asking.

Steam remote play issues on LMDE

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. September 2024 - 22:34

Tried remote play from an arch host to a LMDE client. It works perfectly except that the stream freezes clientside if it is the main window. If i'm focused on another window i can see the video working and the mouse movement registering, but the moment i click on the stream window it freezes. Any idea how to fix this?

Linux vs Windows Performance?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. September 2024 - 21:24

Hi, I bought a New PC with 7900xtx gpu and 7800x3d CPU, and now I have to decide for an OS. Whats the performance difference these days between linux and windows?

Because actually Id much prefer going linux only, but Im afraid that I bought expensive Hardware for nothing, if it performs worse on linux. Is that the case? Trank you.

WoW laggy on Framework 16 Laptop Arch Linux KDE Wayland

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. September 2024 - 21:20

Hey there friends, I usually don't have any issues running games on linux but I don't push those limits usually either.

I'm recently trying getting back into WoW to check out the new content and do some PVP at least. While it plays well on my desktop (AMD 6800xt & 5800x) my laptop (Framework 16 Laptop Arch Linux KDE Wayland) is quite stuttery even on lowest settings. It gets really bad when alt-tabbing too but that recovers fairly quick. I will say the occasional thing I want to look up has me reaching for my phone instead of alt-tab though so I would like to improve it there.

I am pretty experienced in linux for server use cases but I'd say less so with desktop application performance troubleshooting.

I installed bnet through lutris, wow through bnet.

What I've done so far is:

  • set the settings very low
  • windows mode
  • regedit for some x11 setting
  • wine config force dedicated gpu
  • wine config emulate a desktop
  • wine config do not decorate window

The above configs seemed to make alt-tabbing a better experience. The wow process seems to eventually need a restart after just an hour or two though as it gets unplayable over time it seems.

Anyone have any ideas of what I could/should try? I wonder if I don't have the correct drivers installed or didn't select the most ideal providers for some components during arch install.

Controller randomly disconnecting

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. September 2024 - 19:59

Recently, my controller has been randomly disconnecting while I'm playing games. However, that's not the main issue. When it does disconnect, it quickly reconnects, but once it comes back, it doesn't work anymore.

Note: With the Xbox controller (USB), when you hold the green button and move the analog stick, the mouse cursor moves. This functionality works when the controller reconnects, but when I try to do something in-game, nothing happens.

I have tried changing the kernel version, using the Flatpak version of Steam, and switching from Fedora to Debian, but the problem persists.

Just wanted to share my experience switching to Linux, plus some issues and fixes I found

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. September 2024 - 17:33

Note: English is not my first language, sorry for any mistake.

Why

The whole Windows Recall thing was the last straw for me.

Previous experience

I've used Linux a lot in the past since the Compiz days, but always dual booting Windows for games. Eventually I saw myself never really using Linux because most of my time on the PC was gaming.

Nowadays my main PC is also my work PC (I'm a freelance mobile developer, mostly focused on Flutter), so either Windows or Linux is fine. In the past I worked with Python/Django on Linux, too.

Also, I have a Steam Deck which runs Linux of course.

My experience

I decided to go with Fedora because I've always wanted to try it. I'm used to Ubuntu with XFCE but Fedora sounded nice (flatpak, rolling release? not sure about that last part). Not a fan of Gnome but not really sure if installing KDE/XFCE would break stuff.

I had an Nvidia 3080, which would've worked just fine I think. But I'm not really happy with Nvidia as a company, so I decided to sell the 3080 and use a Vega 56 I had laying around. It's a big downgrade, performance-wise. But I don't want to buy a new GPU until RDNA4. Also I don't play very demanding games. The Vega 56 works just fine at 1440p.

So, the rig is a Ryzen 5 5600, AMD Vega 56, 32 GB Ram, 1440p monitor

Steam

I started with the flatpak version but had some issues. I couldn't add another drive as a library (fixed by using flatseal and setting permissions). I also had some issues with the Steam Controller (should be fixed installing steam-devices I think, but that didn't work). So I decided to uninstall the flatpak and use the regular version instead. Seems to be working fine

Every game I've tried has worked fine (I will add a list at the end), but it's true that I've had far more crashes than I ever had on Windows. I don't think I ever had a single Steam crash on Windows, to be frank. Not really sure about this, but I think it's Waylands fault, or maybe Discord? The crash report usually shows a Discord log. I've crashes pressing the Print Screen key, and also while doing some Steam Controller configuration.

I've had many problems trying to use the Steam Controller with TitanFall 2, but I think that's EA Play overlay thing which I can't disable. Fuck EA, but damn it I love TitanFall 2.

I also use Retroarch a lot. Sometimes the playlists become unavailable for some reason. I haven't done research on why.

Games I've tried
  • Divinity: Original Sin
  • Factorio
  • F.E.A.R.
  • Horizon: Zero Dawn
  • The Messenger
  • Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (from the Master Collection)
  • Moonlighter
  • Outer Wilds
  • Pepper Grinder
  • Prey (2007)
  • Roboquest
  • Sam & Max: Save the World Remaster
  • TitanFall 2
  • Two Point Hospital
  • Wolfenstein (2009, pirated version since it's not in Steam anymore, running through Wine and added as a non-steam game)
Other stuff

I knew that my capture card wouldn't work (Elgato 4k60 Pro, a PCI card), so I removed before starting all this. Maybe I'll get an external one, but I don't really need it.

Things I want to try
  • I have a Meta Quest 3 which I really like. I have to try ALVR, but my hopes are not very high. Also going from 3080 to Vega 56 isn't probably a good thing for VR.

  • Streaming to the Steam Deck. I used Sunshine on Windows so I guess I should try that.

The future

I'm going to keep using Fedora. Probably will update the GPU when RDNA4 is available

Some questions
  • What is mesa? Should I use it? How can I know if that's installed or not?
  • Not really sure what drivers I'm using, how can I tell?

How can I configure game mode for my cpu governor to be a little higher

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 03. September 2024 - 17:33

Yes I read the documentation but I am still a noob. I have the folder installed from the repo yet I don’t know how to configure the file, I’m not expecting a full description but maybe a link to a blog going into depth or a yt video. My APU is at 95-99% use but my cpu is at around 25% so will boosting cpu performance help see higher fps and better performance overall?

Thanks

Manjaro btw
