So as it states I'm a total noob with Linux, I've only ever had used Windows OS. I'm building an older gaming PC with older hardware I was given for mostly free. Nvidia and Intel for GPU and CPU. My questions are 1. Where do yall recommend to download a Linux based OS from? 2. Which are best for gaming? 3. Which are best for beginners? 4. Is there any other recommendations yall would suggest? 5. Do I need to edit the post to post all SPECS? I know ppl get hated/ravaged on reddit when posting PC specs if they aren't the best of the best (based on videos and reading on forums)

The reason I won't/don't want too run a windows OS is because the parts I'm using I don't think will work with win11, I know running older win OS have security risks, and I'd like to try a new OS to see if I like it. I have a HDD that already has a older windows OS on it, but I'd still like to try a new OS anyways.

Recently I ran into an issue where using a 3rd party discord client (such as Vesktop) never reported my game activity, I ran into this post on the proton GitHub repository here which helped to set this up for one game at a time. The post said that they didn't know how to set it up for all of my games at once so I wrote a short python script to do this for you which I've put into the GitHub repo here. This works by editing each "user.reg" registry in each wine/proton prefix (compatdata) folder to include the dll which allows for discord rich presence to work in proton.

You do need protontricks (as it's used to access installed title appids), Python 3 and the set up from the official proton GitHub as linked earlier in the post (or here). Further instructions on how to use it are at my repo. I have used this myself on Arch (6.10.7-arch1-1) but I don't see a reason it shouldn't work on other distros.

If you do not have your steam installation at ~/.steam then it should be easy to just edit the hard coded string in line 39 to be set to your installation (pointing to your libraryfolders.vdf).

Disclaimer: I do not know if this will cause issue with an anticheat system due to direct manipulation of registries here rather than through winecfg or regedit so let me know if that is possible or not.

This is also my first post so apologies if I missed anything or posted in the wrong subreddit!

HI,

I hope someone can help me with my issue on Debian 12 Gnome.
I'm trying to install the NVIDIA drivers, but for some reason I got the error in the title when I run nvidia-smi.
Followed these guides, but all of them have the same issue:

First I installed the latest 560 driver and it had the same error, but then I thought the issue could be that it's not compatible with the kernel, so I installed 535 and 525, but same issue.

As the title says, whenever I'm doing heavy I/O (moving/copying files, downloading games from Steam).

I've tried countless different distros, schedulers, ssds, file-systems, kernels, vm_dirtratios, and even different machines. This happens on every configuration I tried so far.

p.s, Nobara is installed with all default settings on a SATA SSD. This does not happen in Windows. And prior to writing this, my entire system crashed.

There is a Epic Games EOS loging problem, likely the anticheat.

When starting the intro mission game exited with a lost connection error (guess it has to to with EOS).

When exiting the game, it freezed, and need to stop it from Steam page.

Hello, I already made a post a few weeks ago about games randomly crashing on my fedora installation. This random crashing during gameplay stopped now for some reason (I did nothing besides updates). But today I wanted to play terraria and after starting the game my entire PC completely froze just like I described in my previous post. After a few attempts I read the kernel logs and this is a snipped of the last few messages:

It is the same the other times terraria crashed. I fixed the crashing by setting steam to use the windows version with proton, this worked but I was not able to host a multiplayer world. What might be the cause of the segfault?

I have tried both lutris and steam version and I am having a very similar problem in both cases. I have tried proton experimental, GE proton 7-53, GE-Proton8-32 and GE-proton9-13 and none of them work. It freezes for every on of this except for GE-Proton7-53 where I get black screen only after I launch the game.

I currently only have the steam version.

GPU: GTX 1650 mobile, driver 550 CPU: i5-9300h Ram: 8 gb OS: linux mint

My 3060ti died out of warranty. Thinking about buying a used AMD GPU for now, as I recently ditched Windows 11 for Fedora 40. I have a 1440p monitor and 5600g.

Spotted these two options near me on Facebook:

1. Asrock RX 6750 - almost new, nearly 2 year warranty - $215
2. Sapphire RX 6800 - older card, less than 6 month warranty - $245

I would like to keep the card at least for a year (and then upgrade to something like a used 7800xt/brand new 8800xt, depending on prices in late 2025.

Torn between the safety of longer warranty and the promise of slightly better performance and vram. Would really appreciate any suggestions as I'm new to both AMD cards and gaming on Linux.

Guys, this is the best Linux for gaming, Apple will mad because of stealing the features and interface, so, this is amazing, this is light OS, called Catfish OS. Will this good on Steam Proton games? Yes or no?
