How to get deltarune to work on ubuntu?
Ive seen countless people claiming deltarune works with linux using proton, but ive exhausted all routes, and it seems to me as if **it really doesn't.**
Ive tried just about every single branch of proton available in steam by default, and ive even used ProtonUP to install ProtonGE as reccomended, but that doesn't work either.
When I click "play" on deltarune, it *technically works*. Steam sets my status as "playing deltarune" and it says the game is running...
but it isnt. the game isnt running. it doesn't open the game and then crash, it doesn't open it and get stuck on the loading screen- it doesn't open the game AT ALL.
Im on linux mint 22.1 cinnamon, btw.

SteamVR does not open at all despite saying it is open on steam, impossible to close without restarting PC
I've been trying to get PCVR working with Linux PopOS but SteamVR is broken. When opened manually, it asks me for superuser access, but then nothing happens. No window opens despite it saying SteamVR is running. When I try to open it through ALVR, it says its connected briefly, gives me a warning "Failed to unblock ALVR driver: /home/******/.local/share/Steam/config/steamvr.vrsettings does not exist" and disconnects shortly after. It doesn't show up in the system monitor and is impossible to close so I have to restart my PC.
I have been troubleshooting for hours and cannot find anyone who has had this issue. Help would be really appreciated!

Wuchang Fallen Feathers. Getting hung on ingame menus randomly after playing for sometime. Any fix? Anybody else?
CachyOS + KDE Plasma 6.6
RTX 4080, Driver 590, latest.
9800X3D.
16 GB DDR5.
DLSS and DLSS FG ON.
Running game on NVME SSD, where the OS is installed too.
Proton Cachy latest. (Game doesn't even launch on Proton GE 10.32, white screen on launching and have to force close)
Launch Options : PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 PROTON_ENABLE_HDR=1 ENABLE_HDR_WSI=1 PROTON_USE_NTSYNC=1 PROTON_DLSS_UPGRADE=1 mangohud game-performance %command%
Generally game runs good. But its randomly gets hung on ingame menus. I can replicate it after playing the game for 10 mins and opening the ingame Impetus Repository menu for upgrades and its gets hung there and have to force close. Sometimes I can play for an hour, sometimes it happens in 10 mins.
It never happens during gameplay. Game runs good and never gets hung, only in ingame menus. Its driving me mad.

DOTA 2 animation stutter/skip (4070 super / Pop_OS)
I recently built a PC for POP_OS and most games run fine, but Dota, arguably the most important one for me, had two big problems. The more important one, namely my WiFi dying system-wide when joining games was solved completely.
The secondary one is still bothering me: namely it’s animation stutter or skip. Keep in mind it’s no longer a network issue, bot lobbies suffer it to the same extent. It’s kinda like frame skip, but I’m pretty sure the frames are all rendering properly, like the camera still pans fluently, it’s just all animations seem to skip a couple of frames every once in a while. ProtonDB doesn’t have a solution. VSync and frame limiters do nothing at all. The skips happen both in locked 30 FPS and locked 160 FPS. I tried messing with fullscreen / borderless as well as the in game nvidia latency options. No effect.
I found a couple of threads on the Dota subreddit claiming that it’s just a quirk of post 7.40 patches and there is nothing to be done. As I didn’t have this PC before those patches, can’t atest to that, but I also found threads claiming that internet turning off while joining games was just a quirk of the Realtek Wi-Fi cards and all it took to fix was turning two power saving options off, so I’m sure there is a solution

Crusader Kings Three Bricks my Pc
So every few minutes I think it depends my game stutters and literally bricks my pc and I have to use the manual power button to turn it off, I can't really show the issue since if I tried to replicate It would brick my pc. This is on steam without proton. Any Ideas on how to fix this?

On the fence
Long time windows user, long time envious what Linux brings to the table.
Satire Nutella is made Windows into a subscription and ad portal. And with a local user account with no microsoft account linked, I don't see ads, not bothered by onedrive upgrades etc.
And all my games just work. With about 5% to 15% performance uplift on my 4070ti in windows.
But I want to jump ship.
Is this performance drop to be expected? I'm not seeing what youtubers are posting "Linux gaming is just better." Not in my experience. What am I doing wrong? I need ray traycing. On another playthrough of Cyberpunk and I also love VR gaming. Should I jump onto a 9070xt instead? Feels like a side step, with a hit to games like CP2077 and Indiana Jones.
I've been waiting for AMD to up their game. But they're always behind nvidia, always playing the $nvidia$ - $50 game.
Bazzite is on my mini pcs, but my nvidia rig is yet to be converted.

Internal error: Failed to expand shell folder constant "autopf"
I am currently trying to mod Skyrim on Linux Mint. Flatpak LOOT doesn't work, it doesn't even detect Skyrim despite me succesfully launching the game from Steam several times, as well as from MO2. Tried Limo, but it also doesn't see Skyrim when I try to import from Steam, plus it's just too weird for me, since I'm more used to MO2.
I installed the LOOT installer from github, but everytime I try to install it, I get this error. I am trying to run it from MO2. I have googled it, and only found one other person with this problem, with no answer. Please help.

Wine 11.3
Struggles with Witcher 3 on CachyOS
Hey all,
after tinkering for a day, checking out protondb a lot and not getting anywhere closer to a solution, I thought I'd try to consult this sub.
My specs:
OS:CachyOS
Kernel: Linux 6.19.3-2-cachyos
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600X @4.41GHz
GPU: Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070
16GB Ram
System and Game running on a Samsung 970 Evo Nvme.
The game runs smoothly and better on windows judging purely by FPS count and general stability. However every few seconds the game stutters for a second. I tried checking with mangohud for irregularities regarding hardware usage, but nothing changes. Even the FPS do not drop from the maxed out 75fps(set to that value since my monitors provide this refresh rate).
I have tried different versions of Proton, so far 10, 9, Proton-CachyOS, GE, Experimental and Hotfix. I have tried setting launch options, my current options are:
PROTON_USE_DXVK=1 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 DXVK_NVAPI_HACK=1 %command%
I have tried switch the game to the DirectX 11 Version, that changed nothing.
Changing any of the in-game graphic settings did nothing, lowering the quality options to the bare minimum and deactivating any kind of Anti-Aliasing or HairWorks did not change anything. As I said before, the FPS counter that steam provides always shows 75 fps, even while the stutters occur.
I also tried using gamemode, changing the priority for Witcher 3 to a higher value, I set the CPU governor to performance and also set the preferred mode inside the nvidia-settings to maximum performance.
I think this is all I have tried today. No changes whatsoever. Constant stutters occuring every few seconds with no explanation.
If anyone here has another hint at what I could try out, I'd very much welcome it. Switched to CachyOS today, 70 hours into this beautiful game and I would be big time sad if this would cause my enjoyment of it to fade.
Thanks in advance!

Dwarf Eats Mountain - A whimsical incremental game I finally made work on linux!
By the beard! Dwarf Eats Mountain is a unique and whimsical incremental game about devouring mountains, gathering gold and artifacts, upgrading your dwarves, and seeing if you can fill your entire screen with shiny treasures, without the skies falling on the wobbling beards below.
It started as a small project to learn and see if I can make a prototype in a few weeks and release a game in a few months, but due to great reception on itch.io, and because of course gamedev always takes much longer than you expect lol, it evolved into a much bigger project.
Recently I finally managed to make the game playable on linux/ubuntu. There were some difficulties involved in getting things to work properly and getting all the right packages/settings to compile, and I also had a weird bug where ubuntu kept minimizing/maximizing the window in fullscreen for some unknown reason, but otherwise it was surprisingly smooth and now it's finally running deliciously well!
If you want you can give the linux steam demo a try here.
And if you have any questions or feedback feel free to share it here or on discord.

Launch options in Steam
I'm playing Embarks ARC Raiders on my CachyOS installation. Having a R7 9800X3D and RX 9070 XT it performs with excellence. Running in 2560*1440 and 240Hz.
What are you guys using for launch options in Steam for your games?

Hytale running with 10 FPS
I wanted to try out Hytale and I thought it could run on my HP ZBook Power 15.6 inch G9 Mobile Workstation laptop with Kubuntu installed. I have friends that can play on random old laptops without any problems, so I thought this should work. However, when I try to play it I got not more than 10 FPS and the worlds also doesn't load any color. Any ideas, is it really just my laptop (would be weird, since other potato laptops seem to be running fine). (maybe for reference, normal minecraft runs perfectly fine)

Frame Generation on Wayland vs Windows
Hi! I've been running Arch again for the last few weeks, and I've noticed that NVIDIA's Frame Generation feels a ton better than it does on Windows - even if framerates themselves perhaps aren't as good, sitting at 80-90% GPU in most games. I used to notice the latency on Win11, it would feel sluggish every time I enabled it, but in games like Arc Raiders, Cyberpunk, Darktide, now on Wayland with proprietary NVIDIA drivers, it just truly feels like an FPS button without any noticeable latency.
I'm still getting 70+ base framerate, so of course I don't expect a frame at that level to make that much of a latency difference, but it's still up to 14ms per frame. Is there something with Linux/Wayland compositors, or Proton itself, that makes up for that added latency that I felt when I ran Windows? Are there somehow fewer "layers" between the game and the hardware? Trying to figure out why I notice such a better experience with DLSS FG now even when the base frames are technically worse, or at least see if anyone else has noticed this difference after switching OSes.

SnapX: The Power of ShareX, Hard Forked for Linux, FreeBSD, macOS, and Windows (built with Avalonia)
Hey nerds,
I've just released the first usable pre-release of SnapX (for basic usecases). It is a cross-platform screenshot tool that can upload to most of ShareX's preconfigured destinations and also upload to custom destinations (.sxcu)
GitHub: https://github.com/SnapXL/SnapX (600+ stars)
Packages are available for: Flatpak (Not submitted on Flathub yet), Snap, RPM, DEB, MSI, and uber tarballs. (similar to uber jars, with all needed dependencies)
For screenshotting:
- It uses XDG Portals with a fallback to X11 screenshotting on Linux/FreeBSD
- Direct3D11 & WinRT to capture on Windows
- XCap on macOS
Additionally, SnapX uses a cross-platform OCR powered by PaddleOCR/RapidOCR. From my tests, it blows away Windows built-in OCR and is vastly more portable, only relying on the ONNXRuntime from Microsoft. This makes SnapX the first Avalonia app to run on FreeBSD and offer industry-leading OCR while also offering screenshot & upload functionality.
The image formats currently supported are: PNG, WEBP, AVIF, JPEG, GIFs, TIFF, and BMP.
I am looking into adding JPEG XL support with a jxl-rs wrapper NuGet package.
The image library I chose for it is ImageSharp. It's simpler than SkiaSharp and open source for open source projects. It also doesn't rely on a native library.
You can also fully configure SnapX via the Command Line, Environment variables, and the Windows Registry.
You don't need .NET installed.
It is built on .NET 10, the same as ShareX. SnapX is deployed with NativeAOT using Avalonia. If you want to know how I migrated all of hundreds of thousands of lines of UI in WinForms, I simply deleted them and reimplemented what I knew users would immediately need while looking at ShareX's source. Kudos to ShareX's developers for making their codebase simple to develop in.
With that being said, I spent a lot of nights with 10,000+ errors after doing so... I probably lost a decent bit of my sanity, but nothing worth doing comes without a cost. After the UI migration, I decided to make sure SnapX could take advantage of NativeAOT, as it's an exciting technology. No .NET install needed on the user's machines?!? Anyway, that led to a few more nights of migrating the destinations to use System.Text.Json.
I even went as far as making the configurations use YAML for comment support. I did try TOML since it's very popular with other Linux users. However, for such a heavily nested configuration, I ran into a multitude of issues that were not something I'm willing to subject someone else to.

Intel is actively expanding its Linux development team, seeking experienced professionals with expertise in the Linux gaming stack, including familiarity with Wine and Proton.
I built a Process Lasso clone for Linux — solves dual-CCD/hybrid CPU gaming performance on AMD X3D and Intel hybrid
Been gaming on a 9950X3D on Linux and got tired of manually taskset-ing every
game to keep threads on the V-Cache CCD. gamemoderun helps but it's
all-or-nothing with no per-process control. So I built this.
GitHub: https://github.com/franzjeger/process-lasso-linux
**What it does:**
Gaming Mode parks the non-preferred CCD (or E-cores on Intel hybrid) before
you launch a game, so the thread pool initialises against the correct CPU count
— no frametime jitter from threads bleeding onto the wrong CCD. Topology is
detected automatically. Works even if you restart the app with cores already
parked from a previous session.
Per-process affinity rules let you pin specific processes to specific CPUs
permanently. Rules persist across reboots, re-apply automatically on launch,
and resolve Wine/Proton .exe names correctly so you can target the actual game
binary rather than the Proton wrapper.
The affinity picker shows all 32 CPUs even when 16 are parked, grouped by
CCD and physical/HT, with parked cores greyed out. No more counting CPU
numbers by hand.
ProBalance dynamically throttles background processes when foreground CPU
load spikes — same idea as the Windows app it's named after.
Also has nice -1 elevation for matched game processes, system tray, and a
Reset All button that cleanly undoes everything.
CPU parking needs a small privileged sysfs helper (installs from inside the
app, needs root once). Everything else runs as your normal user.
Tested on Arch + KDE Plasma. Should work on any distro with Python 3.10+,
PyQt6, psutil.

Using chromebox for Steam Remote Play
Hi I recently got a new pc running Nobara and loving it. I have an Asus CN60 chromebox just laying around and was trying to set it up for Steam Remote Play so me and my wife can play on the TV in the living room. Turns out the version of ChromeOS on it don't support android apps nor running Linux as many other ChromeOS PC's does. So I was wondering if there's a distro I could install on it that would make steam remote play possible. Also controller support is a must.
I first thought of Nobara but the storage is simply too low.. Same for Bazzite..
Any ideas?
