What will it take for companies to invest time to make Anti Cheats on Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 06. September 2024 - 18:26

I am in the process of building my next gaming pc and plan to dual boot windows and Linux. Linux will become my main desktop and I will only use windows for playing games like Call of Duty, Fortnite, Rainbow Six Siege because Anti Cheats are not compatible with Linux.

For every other game that is single player or does not use an anti cheat I plan play on Linux with no issue. However I would hope that eventually we will get to a point where anti cheats become compatible with Linux.

What do you think it will take for companies to invest in compatibility with Linux or someone makes a program like wine that can somehow make Anti Cheat work on Linux?

Sarek9-13 Released :)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 06. September 2024 - 18:10

Hi there, I come here to announce the second release of Sarek, or Proton-For-Old-Vulkan, my small custom Proton with DXVK 1.10.3 for people that have GPUs that support Vulkan 1.1+ but not Vulkan 1.3 and that want a plug-and-play option with personal patches.

What’s new:

The base has been changed from Proton 9.0-2 to Proton-GE-9-13. General prefix configuration and specific prefixes for some games have been modified.

I have made a testing build if you want to test the features that may come in the next version. The majority of the changes have been made in the testing version because I found the patches not being good enough for stable. Here’s what I have accomplished so far:

WineD3D:

By default, this build will use OpenGL 4.6 if detected; if not, it will utilize the highest OpenGL version available on the user's system. Unmodified Wine or Proton typically supports a maximum of OpenGL 4.4. While this change may not bring a significant performance boost, it does help reduce stuttering in certain games, such as Red Orchestra 2, where the improvement is quite notable.

That sounds nice then why its on testing?

Because while it does help reduce stuttering, it is not perfect and does have bugs, as is common with all software. For instance, while Sarek-Stable runs without issues, the testing version may experience stability problems with certain games such as S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Call of the Zone. This has resulted in hard crashes, often requiring me to terminate the application using xKill.

Gallium Nine:

I understand that many people have been requesting the addition of Gallium Nine in future builds. I am actively working on this, and I appreciate the interest. However, it is worth noting that Gallium Nine may be removed from Mesa in the near future, which could impact its implementation. Consequently, I will prioritize this feature lower for now, and it will not be included in any builds until a complete implementation is confirmed.

DXVK:

As for DXVK, I haven't touched anything yet; I'm just doing some testing comparing the performance of different builds. Once I get WineD3D in a good state, I will dedicate more time to this.

So far, the roadmap for future releases will be something like this:

  1. Fix the stability issues with WineD3D so it can be on stable.
  2. Add and modify DXVK v1.10.3 async to testing for better performance.
  3. Work on Gallium Nine implementation.

And before someone asks why I started with WineD3D patches instead of DXVK, it's because I have far more experience using OpenGL than Vulkan.

Any suggestion its welcome, and thanks for reading!!! :P

Who regretted the "Gaming on linux" choice?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 06. September 2024 - 18:03

I was just wondering, switched to Linux for desktop gaming for more than a year now. Although the 4070ti and NVidia are no longer an issue, even after careful refinement of settings and settings Windows seems to take advantage of the hardware a little better, it always seems a step ahead.

I don't like to admit it but with Linux as nice as it can be to play games, to have a free system or even just to experience of getting a game working that would only start on Windows...there is always something that makes me angry, that might give me problems and that makes me waste some time in life.

When I sit down at the PC and want to have my good game session, often, there is something I need to fix or it makes me angry.

The last time, perhaps the final time that would make me change my mind about going back to Windows, it made me angry just trying to find a game on Halo infinite where I couldn't find any lobbies. After 20 minutes I found it and was able to play. I had 30 minutes of my time and 20 I lost trying possible solutions to fix it.

I think in all truth, at least on the Desktop, I'll go back to what I don't like just so I don't waste my time. I would like to optimize it.

Diablo IV won't start in Steam/Lutris - wrong version

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 06. September 2024 - 17:28

I just purchased Diablo IV and run Linux with most games without any issues. Every time I try to start the game I get an error "Version Not Supported" and "You need at least Windows 10 (version 1909) error in a Wine Box. You click OK and it says "Unsupported OS Version (10.0.7501) then exits back to Steam.

I've tried with the normal Proton. With GE Proton 9.13. All with the same result. I've tried with just "prime-run" in the launch options and "prime-run -adapter 1".

I can't seem to get it working in steam for the life of me (I can get it to run in bottles, but I'd much prefer it to be running in steam like everyone else seems to be able to).

Deep Rock Galactic - Steam Proton Error

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 06. September 2024 - 16:49

Hi,

I've tried to run Deep Rock Galactic using steam proton but keep getting the following error message "A D3D11-Compatible GPU (Feature Level 11.0, Shader Model 5.0) is required to run the engine.

Any ideas?

I'm running Linux Mint with a GTX 770 2GB. From what I can see the minimum requirements are a GTX 660, so I should be fine? If it helps, my Nvidia Driver version is: "nvidia-driver-470 - Version 470.256.02-0ubuntu0.22.04.1"

How am i supposed to play (very old dx8 and dx9) games on steam using proton with a gpu that does NOT support vulkan?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 06. September 2024 - 12:37

I'm not expecting much, i just wanna play old games like the original half-life, max payne, etc; early 2000s games...

but no games actually run everything just crashes, only a few obscure native games like Jets'n'Guns Gold run, why is this?

PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 doesn't seem to do anything for proton games and games like original half-life which are native and opengl don't run at all

proton apparently also fails to even create a prefix and no, i'm not using ntfs, i've used ext4 and i also tried moving my games to a btrfs partition and that also doesn't work

i use Opensuse tumbleweed but i have also tried archlinux and that made no difference, i also tried switching between wayland and x11 with, also nothing changed

i've also tried latest kernel patches for nvidia 390 driver and nothing changed

i tried nouveau and nothing changed

i also tried completely disabling nvidia and intel using and each gpu separately using optimus-manager, that also made no difference

the vanilla wine and native non-steam games work just perfectly fine but steam has so many problems with my system

specs of my old computer:

CPU: Core i7-2640M

RAM: 16gb ddr3 1600mhz dual-channel

GPU: Intel HD 3000 + nvidia gt 520mx

Star Citizen with Faugus Launcher

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 06. September 2024 - 12:33

Been looking for an easy way to run my non Steam and non Heroic games. Been using Lutris & Bottles, but its a little to big of a program for my taste for what I want. But thats just me. And yes I know there is LUG-Launcher. But that also goes trough Lutris.

Went trough Bottles first, but then I found Faugus Launcher. Been using that for my 2 non Steam/Heroic games. Its a launcher that works with the UMU-Proton project. And SC has never ran this smooth for me on Linux. Maybe I did something wrong on Lutris & Bottles, no idea. But this just works.

  1. Install Faugus Launcher (Folow the GitHub Page)
  2. Download the SC Launcher and place it in the folder where you want to install SC

(INFO) I have my game on a seperate partition, also the prefixes is in there.

  1. Launch Faugus Launcher

  2. New , and fill in, Path is the downloaded Launcher, Under launch options set: WINE_SIMULATE_WRITECOPY=1

https://preview.redd.it/tkx3i43uj5nd1.png?width=467&format=png&auto=webp&s=630c9a95b234c2208cbb26df009ad2b30bbc9f88

  1. Once saved, launch. And install the launcher. Change the installation folder if you want it someplace out of the Prefix folder. I used the same path, where I put the downloaded Launcher.

  2. In Faugus Launcher edit the Star Citizen entry. Change the path to the installed Launcher folder/RSI Launcher.exe. And create a shortcut if you want. And select an icon (I selected 4), if you want. Mangohud and gamemode a personal prefference. After all this. press Ok

  1. Launch the Launcher, Login and select Game Settings.

  2. If you want to change the installation folder, Change it here. The Launcher will install in your selected folder/StarCitizen/LIVE

https://preview.redd.it/tf3uun7bl5nd1.png?width=1387&format=png&auto=webp&s=4a16da21ab94d6567db24aa3b04454fe8f887daf

  1. In your selected RSI Library Location, create the folder StarCitizen. In the newly created StarCitizen folder create the folder LIVE or PTU or both (depends on what you run)

(!!!INFO!!!) If you dont create these folders. The launcher will trow an error and will not install!!

  1. Install the game.

  2. Play the game.
