Games running slower on Linux than Windows

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 15. August 2025 - 16:55

I recently switched to Linux and choose Mint as my distro (the newest version) and noticed that game performance is worse than Windows. I tried searching for the solution online, but most of them were for the problems that involved Nvidias GPUs. I don't have ome.

My pc is pretty weak (I have Intel i3 Pentium G4400 3.30GHz,no graphics card so I use CPUs integrated graphics) so I tried playing Brawlhalla from Steam and Dead Cells from GOG. Both games ran smoothly on Windows, but on Linux I noticed that both are running worse. Not by much, both are still playable, but it's enough to notice the difference.

Any help would be appreciated.

A slightly different perspective.....

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 15. August 2025 - 16:43

Apologies for breaking the steady stream of "I would like to move to Linux but <insert pet thing> doesn't work" posts. I thought I'd offer a slightly different perspective for your entertainment.

Ok, I am old - ancient even by this sub's standards. I worked with the System V UNIX through the 1980/90's, Solaris at the turn of the century, and have been running a Gentoo system as my only home system since 2003. Up until closer to my retirement I had no time to play video games.

When I retired I found that I enjoy playing single player PC games.

As a public resource, I offer my ProtonDB contributions since then. Starts with kernel 4.19.72 and Mesa 4.5:

https://www.protondb.com/users/883542098

I have yet to find a game that I would like to play that does not run on my Gentoo system. Sometime they take a bit of coaxing. I always post a ProtonDB report when I finish a game - so that it reflects my full experience with the game.

My hardware has evolved a bit over time - given my experience outlined above I choose components that I know will work with a vanilla Linux kernel. So mainly AMD these days - although that was not always the case.

Anyway - make what you will of this, just an old hand musing on the good old days :-)

Battlefield 6 — any way to make it work on SteamDeck?

Does the kernel level anti cheat mean we won't be able to play on the steam deck in handheld or desktop mode at all?

Proton issues

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 15. August 2025 - 16:09

I’ve just made the plunge from Windows to Linux as my daily driver. Decided to finally do it after running Linux distros on my servers for years now. So I’ve got an issue I’m struggling to fix. I’ve got Pop_OS installed and running. When I try and launch a Windows game in Steam, your play button turns into the stop button and Steam thinks the game is running but after a few seconds it kills the processes. Yes I’ve enabled proton in the compatibility section of your steam settings and I’ve even tried forcing various versions of Proton on a game and still no dice. I am also aware that NTFS drives aren’t exactly supported, so I’ve bypassed it and I’m installing these windows titles directly to the drive my Linux is installed on and is formatted for ext4. I’m really scratching my head here like what could the issues be

software support for linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 15. August 2025 - 15:10

Hi all, after having to hassle to configure one of my controllers again, I decided to just send a message to 8bitdo. Probably in vain, but nonetheless.... here it is:

Hi 8bitdo,

I am the proud owner of 2 ultimate 2s, 2 ultimates (Switch edition) and the ultimate 2c wu kong. But...I am also making the transition from microsoft windows to linux, cachyos in particular.

And...to be frank... getting your controllers to work is easy and out of the box, but there is no way to configure them on linux and your key sellingpoint is the configurability!

So.....I am sad.

Going back to Windows is not going to happen. They have chosen a consumer focus that doesn't fit my view on how to treat your customers. Using their data, forcing them to use microsofts AI that is integrated everywhere, and confronting them with advertisement on an Operating System that their consumers have paid good money for is not what I call consumer focused.

I know linux isn´t big, but it is growing at an increasing pace and I and many others with me would truly appreaciate it if you would make sure that your software is useable on linux. Mind you, it doesn't have to be native. I can live with a good working bottles, wine or other installation. I would just really appreciate it if it was officially guided and supported by you!

Kind regards,

Your fan and customer

New monitor issues after waking from sleep

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 15. August 2025 - 14:53

I got a new monitor, decommissioned one of the old ones and now I have two as well, but different.

The one that stayed: AOC 24G1WG4: 1080p 144Hz@120Hz (less flickering with Freesync)

The new one: Lenovo R27q-30: 1440p 165Hz with HDR

GPU: 7900XT

System: Arch with KDE + Wayland

The problem is that when I start a game on the new monitor, I get terrible flickering and some artifacts if I do it after it was asleep for some time. In such case I have to quit the game, do something like change the refresh rate and then click revert and the game starts just fine with no problems. Something iffy happens when it wakes up from sleep, something gets wrongly detected I guess and gets fixed each time I do this trick with the settings.

Anyone has a clue what could cause the problem though?

Benchmark regarding GPU Passthrough

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 15. August 2025 - 14:44

So I finally managed to configure full single GPU passthrough using QEMU in my Cachy OS. I used Cyberpunk to benchmark considering it's one the most demanding game I own, and I'm absolutely floored by the result. I expected a little less performance from the VM for a multitude of reason and ... well I'll let you be the judge.

Benchmark on Linux (Cachy OS, up to date)

Benchmark on Windows VM (Windows 10 Pro, up to date)

I wasn't expecting the VM to obliterate Linux like that, it's actually insane. Note : I'm not complaining, I don't really car for number of frame, as long as it's stable I'm happy with 30FPS. Do you have the same experience : better perf in a well configured VM ? Is the overhead of Proton that big ?

Medieval Dynasty runs poorly on my converted Windows machine

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 15. August 2025 - 13:59

Using the following:
Linux Mint Cinnamon

PC has... a CPU and 22 GB RAM (weird but it works, more on that later)

Now so help me if I get blowback for using Nvidia. I like Nvidia and I used them extensively before Windows decided to abandon my computer. It's tragic they will not work with Linux developers to optimise their hardware or its drivers. Rant over.

installed Nvidia's driver 575 per the recommendations on the driver manager
Computer has a GTX 750 Ti.

On Windows 10, this setup easily could run Medieval Dynasty in 1360x768 in high settings. It looked GREAT. I loved it. No lag. Computer was a little toasty, but it was great.

Now I'm lucky to be able to run it decently on LOW at 1024x768.

I had to downgrade Proton to 4.11-13 because, for some reason Medieval Dynasty... has some compatibility issues? I can dredge up an old Steam post that I got the idea from; apparently this version of Proton was the last to emulate Windows 7 or something? How can I get the latest version of Proton to "emulate Windows 7" or whatever makes it work?

Help me out here. How can I make use of all that processing power that I once had? Do I have the wrong drivers in it? How can I modify Proton/Protontricks to be compatible AND optimised for my setup?

Thanks!

Magic Online (MTGO) on Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 15. August 2025 - 13:09

TL;DR: Is there a way to run Magic Online on Linux?

I’ve been playing Magic since 2012. Due to time constraints, it’s been hard to play at my LGS, so I’ve been using MTGO instead. Recently, I switched to Linux (specifically Pop!_OS) and was wondering if there’s a way to run MTGO on it.

I thought about using Steam’s compatibility layer, adding the .exe as a non-Steam game and enabling Proton in the Steam properties. However, I’m not sure if this will work or if it might cause issues that could lead to a ban.

Has anyone successfully gotten MTGO running on Linux?
