[Help] Can't Control RGB Keyboard Lighting on Predator Helios Neo 16 After Switching to Arch Linux
Hey everyone,
I recently switched from Windows to Arch Linux on my Predator Helios Neo 16 laptop, and I'm running into an issue with controlling my RGB keyboard lighting. On Windows, I could easily manage the keyboard backlighting through PredatorSense, but after migrating to Arch, the lighting is stuck on a static color and I can't find a way to control it.
Here’s what I’ve tried so far:
What I’ve Tried:- Checked for Keyboard Devices:
- I ran lsusb and lsmod | grep acer_wmi to see if the system was detecting the keyboard and any related lighting controls.
- Output: The acer_wmi driver was loaded, so it seemed like the system recognized the Acer-specific hardware. Unfortunately, this didn’t give me any control over the RGB lighting.
- I ran lsusb and lsmod | grep acer_wmi to see if the system was detecting the keyboard and any related lighting controls.
- Checked /sys/class/leds/ for Controls:
- I looked in /sys/class/leds/ for any keyboard backlight control files.
- Output: I found network interface LEDs and keyboard indicator LEDs (like Caps Lock), but there were no files related to controlling the keyboard backlighting.
- I looked in /sys/class/leds/ for any keyboard backlight control files.
- Used evtest to Test Keypresses:
- I used evtest to check if the keyboard was sending events when I pressed keys (e.g., the Fn + brightness keys).
- Output: The keyboard was recognized and keypress events were captured, but no events related to backlight control showed up.
- I used evtest to check if the keyboard was sending events when I pressed keys (e.g., the Fn + brightness keys).
- Checked for ACPI Events:
- I installed acpid and tried monitoring ACPI events to see if key combinations like Fn + brightness triggered any changes in the system.
- Output: No relevant ACPI events showed up in the logs when I pressed the brightness keys, so I couldn’t find a way to control the backlighting this way.
- I installed acpid and tried monitoring ACPI events to see if key combinations like Fn + brightness triggered any changes in the system.
- Explored /sys for Backlight Directories:
- I searched for any backlight-related entries in /sys and found some paths under /sys/class/backlight and /sys/devices/.../nvidia_wmi_ec_backlight.
- Output: These were related to screen backlight control, but they didn’t seem to affect the keyboard lighting. Changing brightness here didn’t have an effect on the keyboard RGB.
- I searched for any backlight-related entries in /sys and found some paths under /sys/class/backlight and /sys/devices/.../nvidia_wmi_ec_backlight.
- Investigated KDE PowerDevil (I’m using KDE Plasma):
- Since I’m using KDE Plasma, I checked if PowerDevil was managing the backlight.
- Output: I looked into DBus methods related to backlighting, but I couldn’t find anything specifically controlling the keyboard backlight.
- Since I’m using KDE Plasma, I checked if PowerDevil was managing the backlight.
- The keyboard is recognized by the system. I can use evtest to confirm keypress events are being captured.
- I found backlight control paths for the screen backlight through nvidia_wmi_ec_backlight, but I haven’t had any luck with the keyboard backlight.
- No control over RGB keyboard lighting. The backlight seems stuck in static mode, and none of the usual methods (ACPI events, sys/class/leds, evtest, or KDE PowerDevil) seem to work.
- Has anyone managed to get Predator Helios Neo 16 RGB keyboard lighting working on Arch Linux?
- Is there a specific driver or kernel module I’m missing?
- Does anyone know if there’s a tool that can control the keyboard backlighting for this model on Linux?
If anyone has any suggestions or solutions, I’d really appreciate it! I’m eager to get the keyboard RGB working again.
Thanks in advance!

Would you recommend only running Linux on a gaming PC?
Linux and Mac are my OS for work and daily use, and I have an older PC that runs on Windows for gaming. I quite dislike Windows but the thing is I can run almost all the games I want to play with very few issues on there.
I really want to be rid of Windows once and for all when I upgrade my PC. I don't have any experience gaming on Linux so I'd appreciate some insight from y'all on how the Linux gaming experience compares to Windows.
Graphics don't matter much to me. I just don't want things to not run or not work well. I can do without games with anticheat or denuvo so at least those won't be any issue.

is The Sims 2 possible to run on Linux Mint via Wine/Bottles?
For years and years I've used The Sims 2 Ultimate Collection by Mr. DJ to put TS2 onto my computers.
Works flawlessly on Windows systems of all sorts.
Out of curiosity, I bought a cheap little Acer Travelmate B118M
I went through the installation just as normally, but every time I try to launch it the game gives me this
"Failed to enumerate any DirectX 9 compatible graphics adapters in this system!
Please make sure you have a DirectX 9 compatible graphics adapter and have installed the latest manufacturer provided driver.
The application will now terminate..."
I've played with all of the settings of Bottles to try to get it working. I can't tell if it's a Bottles issue or a old Sims 2 issue. Yes, I've used GraphicsRulesMaker to add my iGPU to the list. It should work.
The specs of the laptop are a Celeron N4000 CPU (Intel HD600 iGPU) and 4GB of RAM.
I'm offloading my installation away from the 64GB EMMC that's built in to a little 256GB SD card I've got installed into it.
I've already installed all dependancies that the game needs and even thrown in a few extras in case it helps. My iGPU supports Vulkan just fine, I can open smaller softwares within it just fine using soda-9.0-1, dxvk-2.6.1, ,and vkd3d-proton-2.14.1.
I've played with all settings.
I've seen other people using the same Linux Mint XCFE and getting it working so I'm not sure what I'm donig wrong XD
Does anyone know how to get this working? I'm sorry if this post is long and unorganized but I decided giving all information I've got is important.
Thanks to anyone who takes the time to try to help!

Confusion around support for HDR, VRR and DSC in Linux
I am planning on getting myself a 4k OLED Monitor (specifically a GigaByte AORUS FO32U2) and I would love to switch over to linux for my gaming and daily driver needs, but I am thoroughly confused by what display technologies work in Linux.
I have an RTX 2080 (which I would like to upgrade later this year) and I would like to know if Linux supports 4k 120Hz with HDR and VRR (the 120Hz are mostly for the desktop environment, because I am aware that the 2080 won't have the power for much more)? Also, is the DSC a factor when connecting using the Display Port v1.4? (Or should I maybe even get the more expensive Monitor with DP v2.1 for when I upgrade later?)
Is there some table or list or something that details which technologies and especially technology combinations are supported in linux?
I know this is super specific and complex, but I would very grateful for some pointers.

Fix for Minecraft Bedrock Strafing Bug on Intel CPUs
A friend recently reminded me about the weirdest bug ever: the inability to strafe when using an Intel CPU (yes, you read that right; the bug doesn't occur with AMD or ARM CPUs) with the Android APK.
I used to use a laptop with an AMD processor, but I recently switched to a new laptop with an Intel processor. Both of us use the Minecraft Bedrock Launcher Flatpak, which runs the Android APK on our Linux distributions. After my friend brought up the issue again, I finally got around to setting up Minecraft Bedrock on my new laptop and encountered the problem for myself. Luckily, I checked the mods section of the launcher and found a modder released a fix for it.
I created the video attached above to help those who are experiencing this issue.
Interestingly, the bug remains unresolved since 2023 on the official tracker: https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MCPE/issues/MCPE-170810

Problem with my controller triggers
Hi. I just recently installed PikaOS as my distro for gaming. I made the switch to Linux recently with Linux Mint, where I played Hollow Knight and didn't have any of the problems I'm having now with Pika, but I think I wasn't using the same controller, and that controller didn't had analog triggers.
But well, almost everything works perfectly, but for some reason, the readings from the triggers work in a strange way now. It only detects the reading on a specific point of the trigger pulsation (using a gamepad tester I found out that it gets the reading when crossing the point 0 from the trigger coordinates, consulted in Gamepad Tester). In the game it controls strange, cause sometimes when I pulse the full trigger and then I realease it, it detects as if I started pulsing it but didn't stop, and only when I pulse it again, it detects as if I stopped pressing it (I realized it cause in Hollow Knight there's a skill where you need to charge it by pressing the Left Trigger for a few seconds and then you unleash it by releasing the trigger. Well, here if I pulse the trigger, it starts charging but doesn't unleash the skill until I push the trigger again). Again I checked with the gamepad tester online, and all my readings are perfect. Both triggers record the full travel. So I was thinking it was a software problem, maybe Steam related, since the tester doesn't have problems with the gamepad.
Btw, my controller is a 8bitdo Pro 2 and I'm connecting it by bluetooth. I installed the PikaOS Recommended Addititions, where it includes some gamepad configurations supposedly to make it work better (game-devices-udev).
Has anyone had a similar problem and was able to fix it?
