DOTA 2 crash on PopOS (2025 June)!

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Juni 2025 - 17:14

Hi everyone
I know there are tons of posts with similar problems but many are 3y+ old that's why I am posting there.
I am trying to switch to Linux as Windows 10 support will end soon and my system can't be updated to the next version

After many investigations, I decided to give a try to PopOS for it is gaming support

I have a GEForce GTX1080 with a 240Hz screen (Alienware)

I have installed DOTA2 with Steam and for an unknown reason, after 30s the game crashes. Could be in-game, on heroes selection or looking to Armory. I have tried to play with startup options (vulkan cache disable, window mode...) or changing compatibility to use Steam with no success

Do you know where I can find some logs or events which could tell me whats going wrong and tell me in which direction I should look to solve the problem? Or do you have any advices or tuto to follow?

Thank you !

ASUS ROG NUC 970 & Ubuntu?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Juni 2025 - 17:10

Hi everyone, I was thinking of installing Ubuntu on my NUC 970 (Intel i9 Ultra + Nvidia 4070RTX) I was reading on its manual that it will support Ubuntu 24.04 (p. 15 - https://gzhls.at/blob/ldb/0/a/9/3/1b76e2c8a2ffcee9ab78577ad581456a9306.pdf)

When I look up the OS release page it says a known issue is no Nvidia Drivers support (p.1 - https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/ubuntu-24-04-lts-noble-numbat-release-notes/39890)

Any hope of Linux gaming on this bad boy? Or am I stuck with Windows?

My goal is to have a console like experience with Steam and then use the desktop environment for emulation.

I could get something like the MinisFORUM Neptune or AtomMan G7, but I would love to make it work with the NUC. (I like small factor computers cause of the limited space I have and am okay with not running the highest settings).

Thank you for your time and advice

I have made a UI for Konsave

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Juni 2025 - 16:42

I like to fiddle with themes on my systems and i have found Konsave by Prayag2 on Github. the "problem" is that it is a CLI tool and i wanted it to have a little bit of UI to handle my themes so i wrote it myself!

If you are a Linux newcomer and you are still afraid of the terminal or if you are just lazy and don't want to open the terminal every time you have to change your theme this might be a handy tool for you, give it a look!

https://github.com/TheUruz/KonUI

Peace! :)

EDIT: i have updated the README file with screenshots for anyone curious about how it looks ^^

I can recommend playing through Geforce Now if the Game has Anti Cheat in it, especially on the deck. Except the shaders have to be reloaded everytime.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Juni 2025 - 16:18

I can recommend playing through Geforce Now if the Game has Anti Cheat in it, especially on the deck. Except the shaders have to be reloaded everytime like in Call Of Duty especially on the Free Version.

Where you have 1 Hour of Playtime in Free Version.

There are other version but they cost more money.

Cannot run CS2 on arch with hyprland

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Juni 2025 - 15:45

I am running arch and hyprland, and CS2 doesn't launch natively, it just shows the valve logo forever. So far I have tried:

  • running with proton (I get into main menu perfectly but can't join servers because of VAC)
  • changing in cs2.sh " export SDL_VIDEO_DRIVER=x11" to " export SDL_VIDEO_DRIVER=wayland", which just crashes CS2 instantly (yes, even if I don't move the mouse)
  • removing " export SDL_VIDEO_DRIVER=x11" in cs2.sh (it doesn't change anything)
  • updating my drivers ("lib-32mesa" and "lib32-vulkan-radeon")
  • Added "-opengl -novid" inside launch options
  • Added "-vulkan" inside launch options
  • deleting shadercache (steamapps/shadercache/730)
  • running cs2 from terminal (no output, same bug)

My hardware is:

CPU: i3 12100f

GPU: RX 6600

RAM: 16GB

I use pulseaudio as my audio server

PS5 Controller Touchpad not working properly

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Juni 2025 - 15:42

Hey everyone,

I recently started playing Elden Ring Nightrein and everything works fine, except for the controller touchpad, and this is a dealbreaker because the touchpad is used to open the map. I'm using Fedora 42 with Gnome.

Initially, the touchpad was acting like a mouse. I tried to disable the touchpad in Gnome configurations, but then the controller touchpad turned off completely. Now it doesn't act as a mouse nor as I should.

I've tried the solution from here, but it doesn't work, it just completely misconfigure the controller inputs.

Does anyone here have a working solution for this?

SPTarkov is hogging Ram so much that it becomes unplayable

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Juni 2025 - 15:14

Hi, I am trying to play SPTarkov in Endeavour OS. I tried it with lutris, didn't work and later directly(clicking on the icon which uses wine, i guess) it is running but consumes so much resources that kernel has to terminate it. Even with very low Graphics.

Is there any way to get it working? Also, on same system it worked seamlessly with windows so it's not hardware issue.

cpu performance 7600x after bios update.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Juni 2025 - 14:25

i play helldivers2 a lot it's a cpu intensive, so without any limits it was always pulling nearly at 125watt, so i put it on eco mode with pbo limits set to manual.

PPT - 88000

TDC- 75000

EDC-150000

first one was with bios version 3.08 and second one is bios 3.25.

score little less now, but clocks little higher.

What makes Bazzite OS special?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Juni 2025 - 14:14

Everyone says use Bazzite if you want a Steam Deck like experience on PC but isn't it just big picture mode with the Deck's menus to control framerate, TDP etc? Can't you just customize Arch to do the same thing? I'm asking because I tried SteamOS but don't like KDE and I want more control over Bazzite on Fedora Silverblue.

Low framerate in very specific situations

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Juni 2025 - 13:58

I get sudden, low framerate when moving the mouse or using the keyboard in games.
Now I know most people would immediately tell me it's the polling rates. But it gets weirder.

- It only happens when the game window is in focus. If I'm typing or moving the mouse outside the game window, the framerate is still okay.

- It only happens after a while. This doesn't happen for 30 minutes or one hour, give or take, then I'm hit with that. This makes it particularly hard to diagnose, because I can't know if a fix worked right away. I'm discovering it didn't after playing for a while. I do not know if it's even a time issue, or even just that I alt tabbed a lot, or did something specific.

- No visible performance issues according to the system. This happens on every 3D game so far, including some that are not demanding at all, and I can see very low CPU, GPU, Ram usage etc at the same time. I don't think I've played anything 2D lately mind you.

- This wasn't the case, say, roughly one week ago. Still, over that period of time, I upgraded the kernel and dropped nvidia-dkms for non dkms

- The moment I leave the mouse and keyboard alone, everything is smooth.

- restarting a game that has this issue fixes it. Then it re occurs later after 30 minutes to one hour. It's strange, it's almost as if there was a leak of some sort, but it only happens when there's inputs.

If it was a polling rate issue, why would it happen after this long, and only in a game window in focus? I'm not sure if it's related, but one of my games, GHPC, has an issue where, if I alt tab a lot (or if I alt tab after a while) and regain focus, there is a black ... scintillation ? on the game screen. This doesn't happen when the game window is not in focus, and happens again when it regains it. So there may be something that makes my system hate alt tabs, or at least strange behavior with window focus.

My mouse polling rate seems to be at 1000hz according to libinput. Testing a mouse tool for windows/dx under wine I get roughly the same. I don't know what my keyboard polling rate is but it is limited to a much slower rate by the system anyway AFAIK (and my issue happens both with mouse and keyboard)

-Arch (swapped kernel and mirrors for cachyos a while ago)
-Wayland
-Plasma
-N*idia, proprietary drivers

Hair looks weird on my games

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Juni 2025 - 13:28

My specs:

Distro: Mint

CPU: Ryzen 9 7900

GPU: Radeon 7900 GRE

Well, I said games, but there's only one game in the pictures I provided lol. But, this happens to be the only one I have installed right now.

So, I installed the Stellar Blade demo yesterday. It runs perfectly on my system, but I do notice a persistent issue that also happened in other games that I played before, like FF7 Remake. The hair looks smudgy and kinda noisy? I don't know if that's the right word. I included red circles around the most prominent area. I checked some gameplay footage on youtube, and I don't see the same problem like mine. Does this have something to do with the GPU driver? Do I need to check if it needs updating?

This doesn't affect my enjoyment of the games I've played at all, but I do wonder what's causing this? Thanks in advance!

How close or far off are we from DaVinci Resolve running quasi natively on AMD with any distro?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Juni 2025 - 12:00

I run 2 machines. My main PC is running full AMD (7800X3D/9070XT) on CachyOS. I use Kdenlive only to edit my Shorts because it’s quick and easy. For longer and more complicated edits, I use DaVinci Resolve Free version on an older Windows 10 machine (4790K/5700XT). It’s an okay process. I mean, it works but I’d much rather prefer using my modern hardware to edit with DR.

I’ve lost days of sleep several months ago trying to get DR to work on at least 4 Distros using Wayland and X11 but it’s very frustrating using an AMD GPU. Has it gotten any better? I saw that new distro GLF OS (NixOS) has a “creator” option where it installs DR along with several programs but do you guys know if it’s taking AMD into consideration? Not interested in switching distros but are they making progress with getting DR to properly run? It’s one of my last 2 hurdles. DR and MP titles that will never run on Linux which is why I’ll keep my W10/11 machine around just for those.

Linux gaming experience as of 1 month

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. Juni 2025 - 11:56

This is my linux gaming experience so far on a game by game breakdown, system specs as follows

fedora 42 workstation edition Gnome 48 (latest patches when they become available)

ryzen 7 5800x

redeon 7800xt

32gb dd4 3600mhz ram

Moniters x2 1440p 240hz and a 144hz

all ssd storage

Helldivers 2 – stability is pretty good zero crashes however performance is an issue which is either a game or Linux issue not sure.

State Of Decay 2 – game required gamescope otherwise the full screen window wouldnt capture my mouse if I moved it to fast

Arma 3 – borderless window required as full screen mode wouldn’t capture my mouse

Halo The Master chief Collection – first major issue that could cause hardware damage. Occurred while playing halo 3 ODST my gpu junction temps would reach 95-100 degrees, installing LACT and maxing out everything I could without overclocking dropped my temps to 80 degrees while keeping performance the same.

Minecraft Java edition – The official launcher is not available from the Minecraft website (outside from an archive) however using the prism launcher from Flathub worked flawlessly.

Risk of rain 2 – stable with some minor performance issues that are easily overlooked.

Last of us part 1 – amazing performance with fsr and framegen enabled however, major flickering in some areas no workaround as of now.

Halo infinite – crashed my DE 3 times in a row plus lightsauce flickering in the campaign turning off async compute fixed my issue.

Dayz – flawlessly limited however ive only played an hour or so.

Overall my linux experience as has been with my fair share of issues and bugs. Still sticking with it as im hopefull that is only going to get better if anyone has any advice with some of the issues im having that would be awesome.
