The Linux Gaming Community Is Awesome!

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 04. Dezember 2024 - 18:43

I run the YouTube channel Low Budget Linux Gaming and in the last 6 months I have only had positive experiences with the Linux gaming community. I didn't expect it to be like this, to be completely honest. A few examples:

Yesterday I spontaneously decided that I wanted to livestream for the first time in my life. My bitrate was way too low, so people in the chat pointed it out to me and told me how I to increase the bitrate in OBS. I increased the bitrate and switched to accelerated video encoding. This improved the image quality, but unfortunately it also introduced tearing. People stayed in the livestream to help me. I even continued the conversation with two viewers in Discord afterwards.

In general, the comments on my videos are mostly very positive and constructive. Which I also didn't expect at the beginning.

I also asked for feedback on my videos twice here in the linux_gaming subreddit, and people took the time to watch the videos and gave me very helpful feedback.

That's why I wanted to say thank you to you all, you're awesome!

How to make linux performance better

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 04. Dezember 2024 - 18:28

Linux is known for having a better performance with games, but for me that doesnt work. On windows i get a pretty nice fps in games like cs2, but on linux i get like half of that fps. Anyone knows any advice on how to make the games smoother on linux?

Controller not working in Middle-Earth Shadow of War

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 04. Dezember 2024 - 16:53

So the thing is, the controller was working before in this very game. I played it for a little while, decided I needed a change of pace. Played Baldur's Gate 3 for a couple of weeks (using keyboard and mouse). Decided wanted to play shadow of war again. Turns out, controller is no longer working in it.

Interesting thing is the controller is working in Baldur's Gate 3.

P.S. The controller is a PowerA BattleDragon controller. Newly launched.

Asus ROG handheld OS

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 04. Dezember 2024 - 14:32

Recently got the Asus RC72LA handheld. I have been gaming on it and it's running all my games perfectly well for the most part. The issue comes with how much ram at idle. When I game, it's 100% and when idle at the desktop, it sits at 24%. My main desktop rig that runs Linux Mint 21.3 sits at 1-2% at idle and maybe 40% on the most demanding titles.

For clarification; the handheld has the AMD Z1 Extreme, 24gb LPDDR5 (8gb for the graphics). My desktop has AMD Ryzen 5 3600 (oc 4.02ghz), 32gb DDR4, and a Nvidia RTX 3060 12gb.

I know my desktop has differing amounts of ram from the handheld but even when it had 16gb it still ran at better numbers. I believe it has everything to do with Windows being the resource hog it has always been.

My question, what distro should I install on the handheld? It has a touch screen and the built in controller so I was unsure which one to try that can support the hardware. I have heard of SteamOS clones out there and would like to give that a shot. I would just like everyone's thoughts.

note most of my games are on Steam.

Forza Horizon 4 black screen when you click

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 04. Dezember 2024 - 13:58

It happens with all the version of Proton I tried. When you click, the screen goes black, atl-tab out of the game and back in fixes it.

I also use this command to execute the game: PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 gamemoderun %command%

The only difference that that seems to make is to, sometimes, make the mouse click behave correctly. Could also be a coincidence.

The game is playable as it doesn't really require any mouse input as far as I can tell.

I'm just wondering, as per usual, if it is a my setup issue of if that's happening to other people.

(Steam Flatpak) Script to add games to application shortcut

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 04. Dezember 2024 - 13:35

Hi everyone,

As some of you know (and might be annoyed by it), the Steam Flatpak doesn't support adding application shortcuts to the main menu. There used to be a script but that one is outdated and doesn't work anymore. That's why I wrote a watcher that on installation transfers the .desktop files to your .local/share/applications folder and adds your games to your app menu. It's not the pinnacle of beauty or efficiency but it works :D

Give it a look:

Another Linux native title no longer works; I'm going to need to run it off Proton

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 04. Dezember 2024 - 13:09

I've had this happen to me a LOT. Linux native titles have stopped working as the years have gone by. Its happened with a lot of feral games, super guacamelee and others. but I had Wasteland 2 in my library for a long time and decided to install it.

The game installed fine, launches fine. But crashes without fail everytime I try to start a game.

I'm going to need to use Proton or Wine and run that version of the game.

Sigh, but I'm having problems with Lutris right now so I guess that game will ahve to wait.
