Why is steam using 90% of my CPU??

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23. Oktober 2025 - 22:42

Is that normal?? In windows that didn't happen. Plus the game runs like shit. Have I done something wrong?

how bad is nvidia really

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23. Oktober 2025 - 22:22

First of all I apologize, I know that a post like this comes up every day on here. But I have a 7900 XTX and at 3440x1440 some of my games are starting to chug pretty badly. I'm playing cronos the new dawn atm with ray tracing off and in some areas i'm hitting 35-40 fps, which is unpleasant. But I already have the best card that AMD makes...

the 5090 is calling out to me like the green goblin mask but I don't want to lose vaapi for discord and hardware decoding in firefox and etc...

I know that atm nvidia cards have the performance hit with VKD3D but I also know that a fix has been identified for that and will be rolled out in the future, not to mention that 80 percent of a 5090 is still probably a lot better than 100 percent of a 7900 XTX.

So I guess my question is, at the end of the day, how much worse of an experience will I have using my linux computer with an nvidia card in it compared to the current amd one I have?

Thanks for your time.

How do I diagnose mysterious crashes related to a game I've been playing?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23. Oktober 2025 - 21:47

Hey guys, I'm a proud owner of an ARC B580. Unfortunately, I am an owner of a B580, and I had to deal with volatility for the game I want to play.

For context, I've been playing Elite Dangerous, and I've been running through the issue of the game just freezing up on me when I'm basically near a starport. I am using a git main from mesa right now as I was troubleshooting it. Nothing really seems to work and now I have to figure out how to use logs and stuff. Problem is I have no idea how to use em, and it's the one thing that might actually fix it, as it would allow the guys at mesa to analyze the stuff.

loading nvapi64.dll with amd card?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23. Oktober 2025 - 20:39

I want to turn off TAA in metro exodus using this mod. It needs to load d3d11.dll, d3dcompiler_46.dll and nvapi64.dll. Checking with cat /proc/$(pidof MetroExodus.exe)/maps | lessi can see that d3d11.dll and d3dcompiler_46.dll are loaded correctly (path leads to where game executable resides), but nvapi64.dll is missing.

i use these env variables
WINEDLLOVERRIDES=nvapi64,d3d11,d3dcompiler_46=n,b
PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1
DXVK_ALLOW_OTHER_DRIVERS=1
DXVK_NVAPI_DRIVER=49729

is there any way to load nvapi64.dll on an amd card? i know this mod worked on my 3060ti.

alternatively i can turn off TAA in the game's user.cfg, but that breaks some lightning.

How’s 9070 XT on linux?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23. Oktober 2025 - 19:59

I bought a 9070 XT and am waiting to be able to get the rest of my components to build my PC, but how is 9079 XT on linux? Last I heard stuff like RT performance was behind windows, but that was several months ago. How’s other stuff like FSR4 and AFMF? I have never used an AMD GPU before (coming from a 3060 Laptop GPU) and I know that the drivers will be light years better but I do like using RT and FSR at times so I want to know if that’s something i should dual boot windows for.

How dangerous is it to use an anime game launcher?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23. Oktober 2025 - 19:57

I recently switched to linux and I want to play genshin w my friends. Ive heard that it is relatively safe, but Ive also seen that it violates the TOS. Should I just install the official launcher and run it with proton/wine? Im a bit against that since Ive heaard that its hard to set up. Also I think compatibility layers arent exactly allowed. I know very well that Ill be taking on a risk by doing either of these options, but fuck windows

The Witcher 2 on Fedora 42

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23. Oktober 2025 - 19:24

Hi, I'm having trouble with running The Witcher 2 on Fedora Workstation (Gnome) from GOG, using Heroic Games Launcher.

I found a post from 7 years ago that had basically the exact same problem but nothing that fixed my case. From what I understood it has something to do with 32bit libraries, but I tried everything I could find and still nothing :(.

I could probably run the Windows version but I'd like to stay native.

This is the launch log:

./desktop-launcher: error while loading shared libraries: libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory gamemodeauto: gamemodeauto: ./desktop-launcher failed to start due to the following dependancy problems: linux-gate.so.1 (0xf7f6b000) libgamemodeauto.so.0 => /app/lib32/libgamemodeauto.so.0 (0xf7f4c000) libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0 => not found libgdk-x11-2.0.so.0 => not found libcairo.so.2 => /app/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libcairo.so.2 (0xf7df8000) libglib-2.0.so.0 => /app/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libglib-2.0.so.0 (0xf7c8d000) libgobject-2.0.so.0 => /app/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libgobject-2.0.so.0 (0xf7c24000) libgdk_pixbuf-2.0.so.0 => /app/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libgdk_pixbuf-2.0.so.0 (0xf7bf1000) libstdc++.so.6 => /app/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libstdc++.so.6 (0xf795c000) libm.so.6 => /app/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libm.so.6 (0xf7881000) libgcc_s.so.1 => /app/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libgcc_s.so.1 (0xf7858000) libc.so.6 => /app/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libc.so.6 (0xf7626000) libpthread.so.0 => /app/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libpthread.so.0 (0xf7621000) libz.so.1 => /app/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libz.so.1 (0xf7607000) libpng16.so.16 => /app/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libpng16.so.16 (0xf75c5000) libfontconfig.so.1 => /app/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libfontconfig.so.1 (0xf7570000) libfreetype.so.6 => /app/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libfreetype.so.6 (0xf74af000) libX11.so.6 => /app/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libX11.so.6 (0xf7355000) libXext.so.6 => /app/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libXext.so.6 (0xf733e000) libXrender.so.1 => /app/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libXrender.so.1 (0xf732e000) libxcb.so.1 => /app/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libxcb.so.1 (0xf72fe000) libxcb-render.so.0 => /app/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libxcb-render.so.0 (0xf72ee000) libxcb-shm.so.0 => /app/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libxcb-shm.so.0 (0xf72e9000) libpixman-1.so.0 => /app/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libpixman-1.so.0 (0xf722f000) libpcre2-8.so.0 => /app/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libpcre2-8.so.0 (0xf7192000) libffi.so.8 => /app/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libffi.so.8 (0xf7182000) libgmodule-2.0.so.0 => /app/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libgmodule-2.0.so.0 (0xf717c000) libgio-2.0.so.0 => /app/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libgio-2.0.so.0 (0xf6f5b000) libjpeg.so.62 => /app/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libjpeg.so.62 (0xf6e7c000) /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0xf7f6e000) libexpat.so.1 => /app/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libexpat.so.1 (0xf6e4e000) libbz2.so.1 => /app/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libbz2.so.1 (0xf6e3b000) libharfbuzz.so.0 => /app/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libharfbuzz.so.0 (0xf6ced000) libbrotlidec.so.1 => /app/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libbrotlidec.so.1 (0xf6cdf000) libXau.so.6 => /app/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libXau.so.6 (0xf6cd9000) libmount.so.1 => /app/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libmount.so.1 (0xf6c57000) libgraphite2.so.3 => /app/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libgraphite2.so.3 (0xf6c33000) libbrotlicommon.so.1 => /app/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libbrotlicommon.so.1 (0xf6c10000) libblkid.so.1 => /app/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libblkid.so.1 (0xf6ba7000) Launch command: ['/app/bin/gamemoderun', '/home/nobita/Games/Heroic/The Witcher 2/start.sh'] All processes exited ============= End of log ============= submitted by /u/29erna

Sanity check my planned build for gaming/GPU passthrough?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23. Oktober 2025 - 19:13

I am primarily concerned with running into driver or compatibility issues in the OS. I don't want this to be a gargantuan task to configure. I've run Ubuntu for the past few years and this build will likely be on Fedora.

  • Powerful primary GPU for some gaming at 1440p 144hz. Gaming will be done on the host OS, not in a VM. I do not plan to pass this one through. 9070 XT sounds like it'd fit the bill, but I've heard there are some crashing/driver issues with it?

  • Secondary GPU to pass through to a Windows VM for CAD modeling and other slightly intensive GPU tasks (nothing like 1440p gaming). Was thinking a used RX 580 or maybe something a little newer.

  • Not sure on CPU. 9900X sounds like it'd fit the bill. I need a decent split of single core performance for games, but still a decent amount of threads for virtualization. I have a separate dedicated server with more cores, so I'm not too concerned with getting as many as possible.

  • Is it too far fetched for this to be a mini-DTX build? I've built several full size machines in the past and I'm up for a bit of a challenge.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23. Oktober 2025 - 18:24

DOSBox fullscreen on dual-monitor Linux is placing game centered between displays

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23. Oktober 2025 - 18:02

I am running eXoDOS on Linux Mint with the linux patch. The exo-gui is working great and games install like they should, but DOSBox is struggling with my dual-monitor setup. In fullscreen DOSBox is treating the dual-monitors as a single large display and putting the game dead centre between the two monitors, with the side bezels straight up the middle of the image. I presume this has something to do with how X manages dual-monitor setups.

Has anyone encountered this and knows how to correct it? I can play in a window just fine, but would prefer that DOSBox fullscreen to one of the two monitors.

Gaming on linux just changed forever

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23. Oktober 2025 - 17:39

https://github.com/TibixDev/winboat

this is Winboat. it's another app just like wine or bottles. except it's not. unlike other apps that run .exe files, this app doesn't provide a translation layer. instead, it runs a full modified windows install on your machine, with EVERYTHING automated. you can still access windows if you want, but it's not needed. every app opens normally. and since it uses something called KVM, you can use it for gaming too. KVM technology lets you just straight up use your graphics card as it was actually really plugged in to the windows machine inside your linux install. this means there's no need to even use windows at this point. you just install this app, install steam windows version, and then you install games and play on it like you normally do on a windows computer. the best part? it runs SO good that it feels like native. you can even use a browser inside it and use it like normal. what are your thoughts about this?

AoE2:DE mouse drag feels slower on Linux (Hyprland + Proton-GE)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23. Oktober 2025 - 17:32

Hey, wondering if anyone else playing AoE2:DE on Linux (Garuda + Hyprland, Proton-GE 9) feels this — the game runs great, FPS solid, no stutter, but the mouse drag feels heavier than on Windows.

Drag-select boxes move slower or cover less area even with flat accel and raw input (SDL_VIDEODRIVER=x11, DXVK_RAW_MOUSE_INPUT=1). Tried Gamescope, GameMode, Hypr sensitivity tweaks… still feels about 10–20 % slower.

Is this just a Proton raw-input scaling thing or something Wayland does with deltas? Anyone managed to get true 1:1 input in RTS games under Hyprland?

Ubisoft Connect crashing

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23. Oktober 2025 - 17:02

Ive been trying to play the Division but i have been coming across a rather frustrating issue where Ubisoft Connect will just crash upon launch, I've tried launching the division directly without the launcher but it refuses to let me play without the launcher.

Trying to launch the launcher (directly or through launching the division on steam) results in a window popping up saying "Ubisoft Connect has detected an unrecoverable error and must be shut down", I have followed a set of instructions someone left on protondb to install it through Lutris, but trying to run it leads to the exact same error popping up.

I've tried multiple versions of proton, only difference it makes is the error message not popping up and the game still not launching.

Pastebin for lutris logs

If anyone has anything to help, it would be appreciated

Long level loading times in Hitman World of Assassination

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 23. Oktober 2025 - 16:50

This is the only game i have an issue with loading times and it's honestly really weird, it takes up to 2 minutes or more, some levels take longer than others. Loading a save made on the same level loads really quickly compared to initial load

I'm very confused because i would understand why it's so long to load if it was installed on my hard drive but it's on a pretty good SSD and even more confused because it's the only game where it takes that long to load into a level and start playing

I've tried a bunch of different things i found while searching for a solution, including:

- A bunch of different proton version i saw people use on protondb from experimental to older versions and also a bunch of GE-proton(GE proton actually helped fix light source artifacts i was having, or at least i think so, i haven't tested a lot)

  • GE-proton 10-10
  • GE-proton10-13
  • GE-proton10-15
  • And down to Proton 8.0-5

- Having -dx11 flag versus the default dx12 but i don't think that does anything, it didn't help

- Having -skip_launcher flag, same thing

- Going on protondb and trying solutions reported there but nothing worked and i've only seen a handful of reports mentioning problems with level load times, including one from 2 years ago stating using proton experimental helped drastically reduce load times which didn't help for me

The game is installed on a separate SSD and library than where steam if installed, it's installed on ext4, steam itself is installed on btrfs so maybe that's why? Some weird hitman only thing?

My launch option is this: MANGOHUD_CONFIG="fps_limit=60,no_display" MANGOHUD=1 %command%

DISTRO: Fedora Linux 42 KDE
KERNEL: 6.16.12-200
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X
GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3080 Ti
GPU DRIVER: 580.95.05
RAM: 32 GB

On WAYLAND

I have no clue what i can do, it's not the worst thing ever because it plays fine after loading but i would be happy if i could find a fix for it, if one exists

Maybe it's just an nvidia driver issue and i'm out of luck, who knows...

I probably forgot about other information on my system or whatever else, let me know if i did and i'll edit it in
