Steam performance overlay causing huge FPS drop in The Finals
https://reddit.com/link/1m1plv9/video/s764r72w2bdf1/player
I’ve been testing The Finals performance, initially just for myself, but I noticed something strange and decided to test it again and record it. The Steam performance overlay drops my FPS by about 40–50 when enabled.
I haven’t tested other games thoroughly yet, but I think something similar might be happening in The Outlast Trials, although that might have been placebo since I didn’t really test it properly.
Though it’s easy enough to just disable the performance overlay, I wanted to share this and see if anyone else has experienced this with The Finals or other games too.

Wooting 80HE for linux gamers : how to make it work
Hi , i just received this exellent keyboard BUT there was an issue when trying to get the app that control rgb and all others features to work i ran into some issues . Here how it has been fixed :
in your udev rules files 70-wooting.rules add those lines , reload rules and everything will work flawlessly (actuly in my case it was 71-wooting.rules):
SUBSYSTEM=="hidraw", ATTRS{idVendor}=="31e3", ATTRS{idProduct}=="1402", MODE:="0660", GROUP="input", TAG+="uaccess" SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="31e3", ATTRS{idProduct}=="1402", MODE:="0660", GROUP="input", TAG+="uaccess"
i run a Debian 12 stable with backport and liquorix kernel (if it matters) .
It is very nice to get a very complete app natively on linux for that hardware .

Should I switch to CachyOS?
I'm currently on bazzite with the deck image installed on my desktop in a living room hooked up to a TV. I use keyboard and mouse only for setting things up but 90% of the time I want to be controller only experience. So far bazzite has been serving me very well, but I see all over the internet that CachyOS is the best. Bazzite is immutable so it means it's impossible to break but on the other hand I have the 9070xt and wanted to try out FSR4. That requires mesa-git and at least I couldn't find a way to get it running until Kurt added the ujust mesa-git command.
In the past I was using pure arch but mostly for fun of the messing with the system so I'd bet I wouldn't have any issues with CachyOS, but I'd like for it to be mostly plug and play experience.
Anyway I'm just looking for opinions of people who tried both and which they ended up on and why. Thanks for participating :)
Edit: oh yeah and I should preface I need hdr and vrr to work correctly. On bazzite in the deskop mode KDE doesn't handle HDR well at all. The colors are way overblown and only in the gaming mode it works fine. Is that something that is a problem on Cachy?

Keyboard issues Stardew Valley
I'm using Nobara Linux. I wanted to play Stardew Valley with my friends, I downloaded the native game first, but for some reason the native game didn't allow me to play online, only via local network.I downloaded the Proton version but my keyboard stopped working partially. The mouse works, some buttons work like Tab and Esc but everything else doesn't work. Can move only with my gamepad :( I changed many versions of proton and the problem remained relevant Game Version is 1.5.6 Help please🙏🙏 (I tried using a newer version of the game, but online doesn't work at all and freezes on the screen "Connecting to online services")

FSR4 on RDNA3 keeps getting better
A few weeks ago I made a post about the FSR4 performance on RDNA3. Since then I didn't really keep track as I had other things going on but a post from LinuxNext made me aware of further improvements that are merged/about to be merged.
LinuxNext: https://www.youtube.com/post/Ugkxq3eCD4f0TEXrM8xkBzHdpl4ccopiKpje
I also saw in the changelogs from Proton-EM that improvements have been made on the side of Proton/vkd3d-proton as well: https://github.com/Etaash-mathamsetty/Proton/releases/tag/EM-10.0-24
Before I continue a big shout-out to DadSchoorse for making all the magic happen. I hope you don't have RDNA3 users holding you at gun point because what you do is amazing work.
Also big thanks to Etaash for making all of this easily accessible. :)
Now I don't have that much time so I didn't rerun the older numbers (except 4k native). But the numbers should still be comparable as the runs I do produce fairly consistent numbers.
Test setup:
- CPU: 7800X3D
- RAM: 2x32GB (6000MT/s CL30)
- GPU: Sapphire Nitro+ 7900XTX, perf. BIOS, 100% power limit
- OS: CachyOS (6.15.6-2-cachyos), KDE
Software:
- Proton: Proton-EM 10.0-25
- Mesa: Mesa 25.3.0-devel (git-24b1c043ac) + pending changes from this merge request (cherry-pick): https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/merge_requests/36117
- FSR: v4.0.0 from here: https://download.amd.com/dir/bin/amdxcffx64.dll/67A4D2BC10ad000/amdxcffx64.dll
Notes: I won't post numbers for Monster Hunter: Wilds like last time. TU2 update released since my last test which currently causes issues on my system with the proton/driver mentioned above. I blame the game tbh.

Trying to get an old laptop to work
Hello fellow gamers,
I'm one of the many newbies here who don't want to make the switch from Windows 10 to 11. Before nuking my W10 install on my main PC I wanted to try out linux on my old laptop, an MSI GP60 with an NVidia 740M (yes, it's ancient).
I both installed Debian (with Xfce) and later additionally (dual booting) CachyOS (with Gnome) and the laptop runs great with both. All things I need for work run perfectly fine with Debian, so now gaming is my next step.
I started trying everything out with Debian but soon noticed that it wouldn't let me install the correct nvidia drivers (390xx) easily due to security concerns. That's one reason why I also installed CachyOS. Interestingly, the Cachy installer installed the 440xx drivers which shouldn't support that GPU. It was a bit complicated but I managed to uninstall that driver and install the 390xx one instead.
I decided to try if I can get Railroad Corporation to work, because it has Platinum status on protondb: https://www.protondb.com/app/797400
I enabled Proton (tried out various versions) but always get the same result: a small popup window with a loading bar, but once it ran through, nothing happens and in Steam, the play button turns green again as if I hadn't started a game. I get that result no matter if I use Debian (with the nouveau driver) or CachyOS (with the proprietary 390xx driver). I suspected two more reasons for this behavior after my research and lurking on this sub: as it happens at startup, it might be that Vulkan shader preprocessing bugs out due to my old GPU, but switching it off didn't change anything. Also, I suspected that the game is launched with the intel iGPU, but adding prime-run to the execution command of the game also didn't change the result.

I uploaded the proton logs to a hosting service that only has the files available for one week. If you know a better free alternative please let me know, then I'll reupload and edit the links.

I know that with such an old NVidia GPU it's a possibility that I won't be able to run games. But I'd like to try if anyone has an idea.

I'm seriously thinking about switching from a Fedora-based distro to an Arch-based one. Any advice?
A little over a year ago, I started using Linux as the main operating system for my PC, and until now I’ve stuck with the first distro I tried: Nobara Linux. I've really enjoyed both the community and the system itself. I like KDE and everything Linux Gaming has to offer, but for a while now I’ve been wanting to try CachyOS, which is based on Arch.
The problem is that, from what I’ve seen, Arch-based distros use more complex commands, and I’m not sure if I’m ready to switch from DNF to PACMAN. For example, I’ve come across about five different tutorials on how to install Waydroid on Arch, and all of them are a bit confusing, while the Fedora tutorial feels much simpler.
Do you think I should stick with Nobara or take the risk and switch to CachyOS?
Has anyone else been in my position?

Why Victoria 3 is so laggy?
I've played HOI4, EU4, Stellaris, and CK3, and these games run fine, but Victoria 3 is very laggy in both the native and Proton versions. Why is that? I watched gameplay footage on similar specs, and it worked fine in the video, but not for me. Also, it feels like there is a memory leak because the game can easily consume over 10 gigabytes of RAM.
Specs:
Arch Linux
GTX 1050 Ti
AMD Ryzen 7 1700X
32GB RAM

Steam Overlay for Perfomance doesn't show GPU and CPU
it only shows me FPS instead of an option to watch CPU GPU RAM and ETC on the overlay, is this normal? on windows it does allow me to choose that option but not on EndeavourOS
my specs are : I5 3570, 8GB of Ram, GTX 970 i'm on KDE wayland

Question about what disto to pick
So I want to switch to linux and start gaming and doing work but i have been reccomended with Nobara (based on fedora) and Pop!_OS(based on Ubuntu(based on debian)) and I am extremely confused about which one is better. I have about a year of experience with debian-based Distros before switching to windows due to lack of game support and now the support has been increased which makes me want to try out a Linux distro more but these two I'm getting stuck between. I am mainly looking for something stable, and partially easy to use (i dont mind going through the terminal). And also looking for some distro with more application support (not sure if this would matter but please take this into account if it does). I am also looking for the Distro that would provide the most performace too.(Other distros are also fine if they meet the criteria. Also NO ARCH OR ARCH BASED DISTROS. I personally would like something from the Debian or Fedora side but nothing from arch. please.
Here are the specs of my PC:
i5 13400F
RTX 3050 OEM (dont judge, indian budget market sucks)
16GB DDR4 RAM
1TB Samsung nVme SSD (OS Drive)
1TB WD HDD (NTFS- Games and Data Drive)
I really want some help on this matter and i thought this would be a good place to start. Any help is appreciated

How to force to 16bit desktop?
I’m trying to run the Windows version of Bugs Bunny and Taz: Time Busters on my Steam Deck using Proton GE9. The issue is that as soon as it starts, it says that the desktop should be set at 16 bits. Any clue how to do that? I tried with winecfg but I couldn’t find any option. Of course I can emulate the PSX version, it is only a matter of understading how the PC version could run. On my Win10 PC is working fine, and I also managed to run Bugs Bunny Lost in time on the Deck with Proton

Freezing the game
Suppose I freeze the process of something like PortProton — will I be able to continue playing the game from the exact same moment after unfreezing it, without needing to use the in-game save feature? This question arose after I found out that Xbox there is a similar function.
