8bitdo Ultimate 2 issue

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Dezember 2025 - 16:05

So yesterday I had an issue with my 8bitdo ultimate 2 and messed with drivers to maybe fix it. For some reason it gets detected as two different controllers connected at the same time. The first issue got fixed with a kernel update but now it still shows 2 controllers. If I go to a gamepad tester and connect it, it shows 8bitdo ultimate 2 and it shows a second controller called Microsoft xbox 360 controller. I have no other controller connected to my PC. The issue only appears on xinput but dinput resets every time I shut down my PC and the controller gets disconnected.

30 days of linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Dezember 2025 - 15:52

So I boldly challenged to 30 days of linux only on our main pcs. I plan to install bazzite since it seems to be the most popular gaming focused OS right now, but I have very limited linix experience. I stopped using Ubuntu because gnome would crash constantly and it became kinda unusable and I didn't feel like fixing it. Any advice on distro choice and set up would be super helpful!

Edit for specs if its relevant for drivers at all i9 14900kf, 4080 super, 32gb RAM, 1tb will be allocated for linux for now

How complicated is it to switch from an Nvidia GPU with proprietary driver to an AMD GPU using mesa?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Dezember 2025 - 15:50

Going to and early next year. Wanna make sure I know what I gotta do when I do. Any chance it's as simple as making sure the latest kernel and mesa my distro can use is installed and just plopping the amd card in?

Hogwarts Legacy Crashes on Startup

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Dezember 2025 - 14:33

Hi! I got Hogwarts Legacy today (Heroic Games Launcher) and the game refuses to open! I get a black screen for minutes, until I get an error: "app stopped working". I've already tried the proton db recommended launch settings:

DXVK_FILTER_DEVICE_NAME="NVIDIA" PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 %command% -dx12 -nosplash -nolauncher

but it didn't work. Tried switching the proton version from 10.25GE to 9.0.4 and nothing changed.

My specs:

Linux Mint 22.2

Ryzen 3 3200G

GTX 1080 TI

Proton 10.25GE

Nvidia Driver 570

Stem Flatpak symlink /home/user/Pictures

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Dezember 2025 - 13:47

Hey, so I just found something, that seems kinda weird.

Im using Debian and have symlinked my /home/user/Picures to another folder for syncing purposes.

When trying to open steam flatpak i get thi error:

bwrap: Can't make symlink at /home/max/Pictures: destination exists and is not a symlink

When I delete my symlink it start to work again.

Has anyone experienced this? It feels pretty weird.

I know i should propably use the native steam version but I wanted to try the flatpak version to see how it works :)

So if noone knows how to fix this ill just install the native version.

Recs Requested, Linux Doesn't Seem to Like My GPU

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Dezember 2025 - 13:31

Backstory: I've been (very) slowly going through the process of setting up Linux and solving PC problems since I had Windows 11 corrupt about 3-4wks ago. We already confirmed that the bugged security updates cause it (I'm also cursed when it comes to my own tech, but I can usually fix other people's problems). The drives are still working, I managed to solve the last of the IT issues, and, as of me writing this, everything seems to be fully functioning without issue.

My question/problem: I am still trying to sort out the best GPU settings and distro for gaming and streaming on Linux. When I'm just watching YT or browsing online or using Discord, my CPU and GPU are barely used. However, when gaming, it looks like my dedicated GPU is being used more than it was on Windows. It was before while my CPU use stays fairly low. I tried doing a simple stream in OBS while just having Wonderspace Pomodoro up on my browser and I was at 100% GPU usage, 53% rendering lag, and it looked like nothing was encoding/decoding in Mission Center. Games like Dreamlight Valley and Coral Island are (for the most part) running smoother than before but my dedicated GPU is running 20% higher.

I started off with Linux Mint start from Windows 11 after essentially having no guidance on distros. I did end up having to do a clean reinstall of Mint because some Windows residual stuff had latched into my SSD (it was the system drive on Windows). That went away after the clean install so I'm good there. But the GPU issue I couldn't get rid of and OBS shot my dedicated GPU through the roof when using a plugin that had worked seemlessly on Windows.

So, (very) late last night, I decided to swap to Bazzite. My overall CPU and GPU usage appear to be the same as on Mint (nice and low), I'm increasingly liking the look of it, and it's opening everything relatively quickly. But something now feels a little sluggish? I had other redditors recommend CatchyOS or Nobara, but I still feel lost. I'm also really tired from how long I've been working on this. Any recommendations for boosting the GPU back to what it was, and/or on Linux distros and settings, would be greatly appreciated.

CPU: Ryzen 7 5700 G

DEDICATED GPU: RX 5700 XT

INTEGRATED GPU: (currently disabled)

MOTHERBOARD: Gigabyte B550-UC-AD-Y1

RAM: 48GB

steam downloads spiking then dropping to 0

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Dezember 2025 - 13:28

When downloading games on steam, the download speed will go up to my maximum of 500 mbps (around 65 MB/s) for a brief second then immidiately drop to 0. This is weird considering that if I limit the download speed within steam to around 350 mbps the download speed will remain rock solid. I read that it could be an issue with the drive if it is getting overwhelmed but this can't be the case since I am using a samsung 980 pro ssd. If anyone can help I would really appreciate it. (I spun up a windows vm and there was no issue there, its just on linux)

Problem with [Fitgirl Repack] Clair Obscur on Ubuntu

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Dezember 2025 - 13:21

I downloaded it and then I set up the installer as a non steam game and ran it. The installation was fine but when I clicked "play" this message appeared:

I tried to install it via the Fitgirl installer, via Microsoft website but this same message keeps appearing when I try to play the game. How could I solve it?

Winboat is an amazing tool to upgrade firmware of USB peripherals

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Dezember 2025 - 12:15

Winboat https://www.winboat.app/ is such an amazing tool. The USB pass-through feature is almost perfect to upgrade firmware for controllers and other USB peripherals which only have Windows apps. I was able to get Gamesir Connect installed, straight from Microsoft Store in a few clicks, and update my controller's firmware.

Almost perfect because USB pass-through is vendorId/productId based, and most controllers/dongles change their IDs while upgrading firmware. I suppose the devs can fix this with an option to configure passing-through based on the physical USB port instead of vendor/productID. But in the meantime, manually setting up all IDs works great. For gamesir, pass-through them all one by one:

  1. Just USB dongle connected (controller turned off)
  2. USB dongle and controller connected.
  3. The controller connected directly with a USB cable
  4. Unplug dongle, press & hold button on dongle and then plug in (this is special bootloader mode)

After this, the Windows app just works and you can update firmware (separately for dongle & controller). And even all the configuration operations, like controller lights, calibration work great.

Black bars with old games on Steam

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Dezember 2025 - 12:08

On Steam, with some older games (like KOTOR or The Temple of Elemental Evil), two black bars appear on the sides of the screen. Is there a way to make the image fill the entire screen?

Thanks

Trying to swich to Linux but finding gaming is terrible. Any help appreciated.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Dezember 2025 - 11:31

I am trying to switch from Windows to Linux but, so far, it is gaming that is really holding me back. I am just not seeing the gaming experience that so many say is so good on Linux......yet (hopefully).

I want to avoid the "gaming distros" and from what I have read they don't offer much advantage other than saving you a bit of time installing a bunch of apps you will most likely need. So I went with Fedora 43 Workstation.

I'm finding so few games "just work". Two main examples are:

First, Guild Wars 2 (on Steam). I have a 4K monitor and the UI is tiny. I mean really tiny to the point you can't make out the buttons and text and it is unusable. This just doesn't happen in Windows. The UI scales properly and is perfectly readable. Changing the scaling in display settings makes no difference.

Secondly, Cyberpunk 2077 (on Gog via Lutris although also tried the Steam version). All the graphics on screen as soon as you start the game (so intro, menus, everything) just continuously flashes all the time. It is unusable.

My setup is AMD 7800X3D, 9070 XT and 32Gb memory. Any help appreciated as at the moment I have no choice but to resign myself to Windows 11 junk. I don't want to dual boot and especially just for gaming so want just one OS on my PC. I would prefer that not to be Windows 11.

I would also be very interested in opinions on whether I should switch to KDE. I have read that KDE has better VRR support (which might help with the flickering issue?) and scaling support (which might help the Guild Wars 2 issue?)
