nvidia gtx1650 (open) driver state/experiences

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28. Juni 2025 - 14:03

I've tried on linuxquestions but have found this subreddit so maybe I'll have more luck here.

I'm considering buying a used gtx1650 4GB. I'm really on a tight budget and that is the best option I managed to find for my system. All the info that I've managed to find is generally older or too old, so I'm interested in any current information on this gpu on linux. I'm assuming that I will have to use the open kernel drivers, so I'm especially interested in that. But in general what I want to know is if there is something annoying or deal breaking.

It would be paired with a xeon E3-1245v2 and placed in a pcie 3.0 16x slot.

I use mint xfce, but I'm considering trying out fedora, opensuse and kde.

My other option is to buy a much cheaper used rx460 2GB and then sometime in the future (but not near future) something more powerful by amd (like something from the 6xxx line). I gave up on the rx550.

I play indie games and old/older games so I could live with the rx460 for gaming (it's better than what I had), but if gtx1650 is not problematic, I'd love to have something more powerful for both emulation and for some games which require more powerful gpus.

Any help is appreciated.

Best Arch based distro for gaming?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28. Juni 2025 - 13:25

I'm currently using Bazzite and briefly tried CachyOS though had some driver issues so went back to Bazzite. While using CachyOS I noticed I get way better performance, and been told its mostly because its Arch based. So was wondering what other Arch based Distro's out there that are suitable for gaming and easy enough to setup and get going with min issues. My ROG laptop used for gaming I would say about 5% of the time the rest is other stuff, work etc... but for that it doesn't really matter which Distro just need something reliable and stable. Getting Steam and games to run properly though can be tricky. Bazzite has been running pretty well overall but word on the street Fedora might drop 32bit support and if that happens founder of Bazzite project said he will shut it down. There is no timeline when this will happen or it might not happen at all, just something that's being discussed, but regardless keen to try another Distro after hearing that.

Custom Steam Client?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28. Juni 2025 - 12:46

Hello everyone!
With the recent talks about Fedora potentially dropping 32 bit libraries it got me thinking on this topic.

SteamCMD is a CLI tool to manage Steam based stuff, downloading, starting, managing Games and tools all without the GUI.

Wouldnt it be Possible to wrap a custom GUI around it? If so, why hasn't anyone done that yet?

Is there anything like lossless scaling for Linux?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28. Juni 2025 - 12:28

I tried looking online but couldn't find sufficient answers. The closest thing I found was gamescope but from what I understand it isn't really the same as LS.

A call to arms, 8bitdo gamepad software support

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28. Juni 2025 - 12:24

Hello fella penguin gamers. Year 2025 and yet 8bitdo software (remapping, firmware, and overall gamepad tweaking) does not support linux.

I sent them an email, took me 1 min, telling how much I would love they support linux. Maybe if we enough of us do the same they will listen.

They make great products but isnt a bit lame that they support windows/android but not linux?

Thank for your time!

Need help to switch to Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28. Juni 2025 - 11:14

Hi, i'm trying to switch to linux for both gaming and productivity (davinci resolve and reaper) i'm not super techy, so i need your help.

I'm looking for a simple distro that handle my needs without the need to become crazy with guides and terminals, but to have a smooth process.

Worth noting that i have an Nvidia GPU, and i'd like to run a distro that recognize newer hardware, just in case i switch to a newer system, i don't want to lock me out from newer cpu and gpu, but still hopefully have a stable OS.

I know steam works on Linux and about heroic for gog and epic games, but what about EA and Uplay?

I also have some confusion about wine/bottle and that kind of stuff, do i really need them or just what's the easiest way to manage windows programs/games?

Also if you have any general tip i should be aware of, feel free to write it, thank you in advance.

60 FPS feels like 20 FPS in games (Minecraft) on Linux Mint with NVIDIA MX450

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28. Juni 2025 - 10:42

Hi everyone,

I have an issue I hope someone can help me figure out.

When I play Minecraft on my laptop (Linux Mint), the game reports a stable 60 FPS, but it feels extremely choppy, like 20 FPS. The image isn’t smooth at all, despite the FPS counter showing 60.

Some details about my system:

Laptop: Lenovo IdeaPad 3 15ITL6

CPU: Intel Core i7-1165G7 (11th gen)

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce MX450 (laptop version)

RAM: 8 GB DDR4

Storage: 128 GB NVMe SSD

OS: Linux Mint (Cinnamon edition)

Drivers: Proprietary NVIDIA drivers installed (not Nouveau)

Display: 60 Hz panel

This issue happens only in games (like Minecraft), not in the desktop environment, which runs perfectly smooth.

Important: This only happens when I enable V-Sync. Without V-Sync, it feels more responsive but there is screen tearing.

Does anyone know what causes this discrepancy between reported FPS and actual smoothness? Any ideas for how to fix or troubleshoot it?

Thanks in advance!

Enabling DLSS Frame Gen - Potential Workaround

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28. Juni 2025 - 10:04

I was having the issue where DLSS frame gen was not available in Cyberpunk 2077 through Steam. Off and FSR frame gen were the only options. After playing around with various Steam launch options and BIOS settings, I found that disabling both hybrid and integrated graphics in BIOS solved this and the option is now available. No launcher options required. I'm launching Flatpak through Steam, using a 9000-series AMD CPU and 5000-series NVIDIA GPU.

I don't know why this works, but thought I'd drop this in case it helps someone. YMMV.

Steam OS not booting from Bootable usb on desktop

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28. Juni 2025 - 09:17

Hi, I have decided to make a dual boot system on my current windows 10 PC.

I have downloaded the recovery steam OS from steam page and created a Bootable USB device using Rufus.

However, I am being unable to boot into steam OS setup whenever I select boot from the usb device. It just says loading operating system and nothing beyond this message and sometimes it just switches to boot from the boot option first option which is my primary windows system after failing to load the steam OS.

I have tried different usb storages from thumbsticks to external HDDS and still failed to boot. I have also tried other Linux based OSs and was able to boot fine.

Would appreciate if you guys could help me to resolve this issue.

Note: my GPU is RX 480, shall I post my hardware information or wouldn't it matter?

Big CPU temperature difference between Linux (CachyOS) and Windows 11 on my Intel UHD 600 laptop — why?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28. Juni 2025 - 07:41

Hi everyone,

I’m using an Asus laptop with the Intel UHD 600 integrated GPU. I recently installed CachyOS hoping to get smoother gameplay.

On Linux, I get around 60-70 FPS in Minecraft. Using the exact same save file and mods on Windows 11, my FPS drops to around 20-30, plus I get short freezes every 1-2 minutes on Windows. So linux is muuch more efficient in my system about FPS and stability.

But here’s what confuses me the most: • On CachyOS, my CPU temperature stays around 90-100°C on minecraft. • On Windows, it stays between 70-90°C under the same conditions.

Why is there such a big temperature difference?

Should I try a different Linux distro instead of CachyOS?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Disappointed but not that much

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28. Juni 2025 - 06:47

Let me start by saying that I don't want to criticize Linux, which I love and have used for many years. That said, at this point I realize that some aspects are overrated. I have an ASUS laptop that originally came with Windows 10.

Since support is ending, I decided to install Linux. Everything went fine at first, but unfortunately, the only game I play 'Dark Age of Camelot' not only runs poorly, but also causes the PC to overheat and shut down.

Thinking it might just be that game, I installed Steam, and the same thing happened. So yes, Linux is great, and that has to be acknowledged, but it's definitely not the solution for everyone. Also, I'm not exactly new to the Linux world, so I did everything possible to prevent the issue, from using TLP to CPU_autofreq. In short, using Linux on certain hardware is a downgrade.

Help

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28. Juni 2025 - 04:44

I'm new to Linux, and maybe I didn't make the best decision in operating it, because I've had many problems installing applications, especially games. I am writing this for help to install steam games that are not enabled in the SteamOs+ Linux option, for example R.E.P.O. and Schedule 1.

Thanks!!

Constant crashing, bad gpu?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 28. Juni 2025 - 04:15

I'll start by saying I experienced frequent crashes back when I used windows as well (same graphics card I'm using now), and i fixed it on Windows by setting the video driver timeout to a higher number in the refistry editor.

I'm on Arch Linux running Hyprland. PC specs are: Ryzen 7 3700x MSI RX 5700 XT MSI MPG X570 Gaming Edge WiFi Mobo

Using vulkan-radeon instead of amdvlk

I've seen people saying they're having great experiences using AMD cards even on linux, but this card has been nothing but a nightmare for me. I've tried every version of Proton (including GE). Some games I don't get crashes anymore, some its rare, and some I can't play because it's so bad. And when the GPU crashes, I have to restart the whole computer.

I guess my question is, do other people have this experience? I need to upgrade the card regardless (8GB VRAM doesn't cut it anymore), but I'm nervous I'm going to have the same experience if I get something like a 9070 XT.

Is the RX 5700 XT (or specifically the MSI one) just a bad/unstable card? I know they had driver issues on launch with it, but I read that it got fixed pretty fast.
