How can I properly run a (Windows) game that's in a self-contained folder that needs no installation?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22. April 2025 - 20:01

I've been enjoying Proton on Steam for years but have never had luck with Wine or Bottles. I have a game that doesn't need to be installed, and everything including its data and .exe in a single folder. No matter what I do on Bottles, I can't get this game to work at all.

I'm on Fedora 42, everything's up to date.

Xbox Series controller haptics feel stronger and more responsive on Linux than Windows

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22. April 2025 - 20:00

I've been having a dilemma for some time now since I've been switching a lot between my Windows desktop and a Linux laptop when playing on the go. With my Xbox Series controller, its haptics act completely differently on my Linux laptop when playing a game under Proton than on my Windows desktop. In games such as Rocket League, Project Diva MM+ and a few others, I can barely feel the controller vibrating, while on my Linux laptop, playing under Proton, the controller shakes around and feels much more alive. Is there a particular reason (whether in drivers or interpreters) for this kind of behavior?

I'm running barebones Arch Linux on my laptop I installed manually with hyprland as my graphical desktop environment. I run all of my games either through Steam or Heroic with Proton-GE. I always disable the Steam Input and let the controls handling rely on the titles themselves. I'm sure there's no current limiting factor, as my main PC's motherboard can freely deliver up to 2A of current from each USB port and my laptop can barely keep a phone that requires 500mA of charging current up without slowly discharging. Are there any drivers I'm probably missing on my Windows machine other than Microsoft's generic ones?

The reason why I'm asking here is that my query didn't fit the other subs.

Game keeps freezing

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22. April 2025 - 19:35

I know this isn't a technical support forum but I'm thinking this is at least a good place to start to figure out what's wrong with my set up. I am not tech competent.

I kinda solely play Bethesda games so I have no reference if the problem is solely with fallout 4, or if the problem would recreate with other games. Sometimes during combat, or a random fast paced action happens the game freeze crashes. As in say I run to hit an enemy the game freezes and I'm unable to fix it or anything. There doesn't seem to be a mod to work around it, like crash saving. However despite the bullshit I've been able to consistently play fallout 4 for a while now, to the point where my character is somewhere in like level 120-140. So the problem catastrophically fatal, in that I'm not able to kinda work around it, however the when the problem occurs when I least want it to, IT DRIVES ME UP A FUCKING WALL.

I'm not a Linux or computer expert in anyway, so as far as I can tell there are a million reasons for the game not to be working, I posted this here to see if I might be able to pinpoint a couple of the most likely culprits.

I'm playing the game through mod organizer 2, not through steam. It is the best way for me to run the game.

I'm playing the game of the year edition I think, so it comes with mods in it. I also have a couple mods on it too. However this was happening before I ever put any mods in it.

My operating system is plain Debian bookworm, I can't recall if I changed it to sid or not I'd have to check.

I have 2 sets of ram. I can't recall right now what the speeds and latencies are.

I wasted a lot of money on the amd 7800x3d, and (?)7900 XT. I kinda just figured that would be enough to run any game I wanted, evidently not.

Kinda messed up with the mother board bought a cheaper one than I was supposed to, idek.

I got a good power supply, gold rating I think. Idk I just remember getting the right power supply for the system.

Aio cooling whatever.

Like I said I can kinda work around the problem and it's kinda fine. However I'm fairly certain it's fixable. I just have no reference as for where I should even begin, or if it's worth it. Thank you for reading my ramble, much love.

Does Wine wayland fix the issue where games don’t use the full resolution of the monitor when fractional scaling is enabled?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22. April 2025 - 18:08

Gamescope fixes this but seems to come with a slight performance hit that is unfortunately too much for my poor RX 9070 XT to handle at 4K60FPS

CachyOS Handheld edition: Inconsistent Black screen when switching to desktop mode from game mode

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22. April 2025 - 17:07

im using CachyOS handheld edition on my GPD Win 2. Works great except when using game mode and switching to desktop mode, I sometimes get a black screen and does not transistion to the desktop session. Sometimes it works but most times did not.

Researched the possible solutions:

Some people encounter this issue with decky loader plug ins. But I am not using decky loader.

Some say delete the kscreen folder in .local fixes the problem. This did not work either.

Updated to the preview brach for deck steam, did not work.

Im at my wits end. Any help would be great.

is Nvidia on linux that bad?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22. April 2025 - 16:56

Recently I've been deciding between an rx 7900 xtx and an rtx 4070 ti super for gaming and blender on linux. on one hand linux works better with amd when it comes to gaming but since i also want to use blender, which makes me lean towards nvidia since it beats amd in productivity with no contest. but i’ve also heard that nvidia performs worse on linux than amd when it comes to gaming. so i’m asking, is nvidia on linux that bad to the point i have to give up my dreams of being a 3d modelling artist and go all amd?

oh and sorry for making it sound dramatic at the end and also sorry for bad english lol

Lightweight OS?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 22. April 2025 - 16:52

PLEASE READ Hey everyone, I have an AMILO-D Series CY 23 with 240MB of ram and a 20GB HDD. I have tried Damn small linux and tiny core linux, but they didn’t felt good to me. I wanted to play some old games and maybe even Minecraft, just to see how well it performed. And my lovely Arch is too big to run here :( Any advice?
