Installing Sims 3 with PlayOnLinux4

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 29. April 2025 - 23:36

I have recently have been trying to get Sims 3 on my Linux pc but have struggled as I only own the CD version of the game. I have been following this YouTube tutorial: https://youtu.be/4F5cdbCEqmU?si=bm6rROBBOCP5DOZT but it keeps telling me mid download that I need to insert the cd, which I did do. It also then proceeds to tell me I have the wrong cd or the wrong directory or path. If someone can can guide me on how to do this successfully with a step by step process I would greatly appreciate it.

Ps. The blackout in the directories was my name as I named my laptop my name

How to add emulator games (individually) to Steam on Linux (NOT STEAM DECK)?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 29. April 2025 - 23:09

Hi, I recently moved away from Windows and I've been struggling a bit with this issue.

On my Steam Deck I'd use a software called Emudeck to add roms to my steam library, I like having the games on steam since there's the chat feature, steam overlay and whatnot and I really don't mind the clutter.

Emudeck doesn't seem to work well on Linux PC tho, and Steam Rom Manager has not been updated for a while, how can I add roms to my steam library?

thanks in advance

Minecraft and Java - Constant issues unreproducable by Windows users

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 29. April 2025 - 22:49

Hey, I am playing TerraFirmaGreg, a Minecraft modpack with over 200 mods. I constantly run into issues with my game crashing and freezing my entire computer to the point where I have to force a restart by pressing the physical restart button on my machine. I tried tinkering with mods, allocating more and less ram, playing with or without shaders, barely anyhting seems to make a difference and Im sick of it. I checked the logs of Minecraft but they do not have any helpful info on what causes the crashes.

Basically what happens is; I load up the game just fine. I load my world just fine. I get to run around for maybe 2-5 seconds ingame, sometimes more, reaching my set FPS cap of 70 no problem and then, within less than a second, the game freezes and with that my PC. The times it freezes at seem to be completely random, there isnt anything happening ingame that would cause extra stress. Memory and GPU usage, while high (both around 70%), are fine. This really bugs me because I never had this issue on Windows, no one on Windows has any issues like that and my specs really aren't too bad.

I wanted to ask if maybe there are fellow Minecraft modpack players here who have tips. Maybe Linux needs some special JRE? Or maybe JVM arguments could help me? I am playing TerraFirmaGreg 0.9.2 on the Prism Launcher.

I am on Kubuntu 24.04 LTS. My specs are:
AMD Ryzen 7
NVIDIA RTX 2070 Super
16 GB RAM

What's the best way to handle games using Media Foundation at this point in time (2025)?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 29. April 2025 - 22:33

I'm having issues getting good up to date info on this topic so I figured someone here might have a good pointer or some personal experience.

I do remember that there was an effort to reverse-engineer the Media Foundation libraries, but that seems to be something that was never finished, opting instead for Valve re-encoding the video files on their end when it comes to Steam releases. I also remember Proton-GE having releases with MF support built-in.

But, whatever version I try (older or newer) I can't seem to get some videos running in a non-Steam game when using Heroic or Lutris. For reference, the game seems to be using the "Cinepak" codec (whatever the devil that is) inside an AVI container. Interestingly, Wine 10 seems to be trying, I actually saw a video frame render before the game crashed on me, I didn't go deeper down the Wine rabbithole (as in, I don't know what exactly caused the crash) at the moment since I got curious as to why Proton-GE is not helping either.

I will note that the game might be using something other than MF, again, didn't dig in too deep, but I do get that test pattern instead of the video in Proton-GE that I only recall seeing when MF was the sticking point.

So, in the interest of both me knowing and hopefully getting something someone else might use into the search results, anyone know what the current status with MF in Proton is? Should it be working but I just found a weird edge case? Is installing MF through Winetricks or a third party script the way (I seem to recall there were some problems with the regular Winetricks install)?

Marvel Rivals not launching on Steam

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 29. April 2025 - 22:33

Since last patch when I hit the "Play" button on Steam nothing launches, it just changes to "Stop" As if the game is running but nothing pop-ups nor the game launches.

Previously I had been playing without problems and I was even bragging to friends how good is to play on Linux with Proton.

I have already tried changing proton versions, adding commands like SteamDeck=1 PSOCompile=1 gamemoderun, etc to no avail.

Mesa 25.1.0-devel
Proton experimental-bleeding-edge
OS: Nobara Linux 41 (KDE) (Wayland)
CPU: AMD Ryzen™ 5 5600X
GPU: Intel® Arc™ A750 Graphics (DG2)

Perhaps it has something to do with my GPU as I have seen recent posts of all AMD setups that have running the game recently.

Any help will be really appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

What OBS settings do you use?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 29. April 2025 - 21:39

A few days ago I recorded a gameplay session with some friends, but when I tried to export the video to DaVinci Resolve, it wouldn’t play. I’m not sure if the issue is with the video itself or with the program. I ran some tests with different settings and none of them played properly.

For those who don’t know the issue: DaVinci Resolve on Linux doesn’t support H.264, H.265, or AAC codecs, so recording in standard .mp4 format won’t work if you want to edit in DaVinci Resolve. And I don’t want to switch to another editor since I’m already used to this one.

Any advice?

Trying to troubleshoot steam on Debian 12

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 29. April 2025 - 20:20

I have seen that games don't seem to run when they are installed on an NTFS partition. I am trying to see if that is the case but, since I used gnome disks to autoboot my ntfs drives I have no idea how to edit the /etc/fstab because I see that I am supposed to have something like this:
UUID=38CE9483CE943AD8 /media/gamedisk ntfs uid=1000,gid=1000,rw,user,exec,umask=000 0 0

While I have this in fstab:
/dev/disk/by-uuid/3E1CDC4B1CDC0037 /mnt/winmaindisk auto nosuid, nodev, nofail,x-gvfs-show 0 0

/dev/disk/by-uuid/AEAC7364AC73264D /mnt/workdrive auto x-gvfs-show 0 0

How should I edit it? And can I use Gnome Disks instead of the command line? (I know it might be easier that way, just couldn't find any way to change this other than digging around in fstab and not everyone might be comfortable with doing that right away)

Full jump to linux.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 29. April 2025 - 20:14

There's nothing I want more than to just nuke windows and go full Linux.. I've tried it but it didn't work out, why? Well because I like playing star citizen, and getting that game to work on Linux is a pain in the a$$, additionally, I use tobii eye tracker 5 which doesn't work with linux.. but oh boy if it did, I'd switch immediately..

So if anyone knows of a distro great for gaming (specifically Star Citizen) that supports tobii eye tracker 5.. (and hosas), please let me know..

Intel Arc A770 power saving on linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 29. April 2025 - 20:14

I'm trying to bring down power usage in idle with this card, but it is not effective on Linux. I enabled ASPM in UEFI, and after configuring power saving in Windows, I can see ~10W drop in idle. However I can't reproduce this in Linux. After some digging I found that I should change /sys/module/pcie_aspm/parameters/policy parameter. I changed it to powersave, I did that via kernel cmd line parameter, just to be sure that it is enabled early. And I can confirm that after boot it is set:

~ cat /sys/module/pcie_aspm/parameters/policy default performance [powersave] powersupersave

But power draw didn't change and is still at ~38W when idling. If I try to enable powersupersave I lose display, and later I found following error in journal:

Apr 29 19:21:42 kad-pc kernel: pcieport 0000:07:01.0: Unable to change power state from D3cold to D0, device inaccessible Apr 29 19:21:42 kad-pc kernel: pcieport 0000:07:04.0: Unable to change power state from D3cold to D0, device inaccessible

Does anyone know, what else could I try?

Overwatch 2 & Memory leak

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 29. April 2025 - 20:07

So to get the questions out of the way.
I've tried every version of Proton, my temps are all fine, as of right now only game I have this issue on is Overwatch 2.

Here's my hardware

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5700X
GPU: Sapphire Radeon RX 7700 XT (12 GB VRAM)
RAM: 32 GB DDR4 (running at 2933 MHz)

Motherboard: ASUS ROG STRIX B450-F GAMING

I got the display stats on in Overwatch 2, at first the game seems to play fine but then I see VRam spike up to max and it feels like I'm playing through powerpoint, at least the frames are consistent just really low, feels like around 10.
Overwatch is on the same drive as Steam, I'm not using the flatpack version of Steam.

Any way to fix this?
Prefer not to have to restart my game after 1 or 2 matches..

Installing games on my second SSD.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 29. April 2025 - 18:49

Hi, i'm new to Linux, i'm using Mint. I installed Steam today and none of my games were running, apparently its because they were in my second SSD, i have 1 M.2 Nvme where i keep the OS and programs, and 1 SATA where i keep my games and some other stuff, but the games only run if they're installed in my M.2. Why? Also why does the system treat the SATA SSD as an external drive?
