Wayland AMD Performance Improvement

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 02. Mai 2025 - 07:57

Hello guys,

I newly joined the Linux world and just wanted to share a recent experience I had:

Current setup:

Linux Mint 22.1 (6.13.5 Mainline Kernel)

with KDE (Wayland)

9070 XT

Ryzen 7 7700X

I was able to get native games like dota to run immediatelty but then I tried to launch Squad and had an incredibly choppy/laggy experience. I am still new to Linux so I didn't know how to debug this but it clearly felt like it is not the framerate, something else was the issue. (Very high fps but suuuper choppy) Same issue to same degree with RDR2.

After some research and trial and error I found out that at least for my hardware, Wayland is absolutely a must if I want to run all my games without performance impact. x11 is fine for Dota but as soon as you start going outside of the steam safespace it goes to shit. I will try to learn how to debug this stuff better to understand what exactly is that "choppy feeling" but in case you are a new mint user like me this might be your solution.

Just keep in mind that I also had to do the extra steps for the 9070 xt to get it working, but this is unrelated to the issue. (Mainline kernel, Mesa 25 etc)

TLDR: If you are using a distro that uses x11 per default like mint (and probably an AMD user), switch over to Wayland. I think this might be different for NVIDIA because there everybody says to use x11.

Chivalry 2 coursor crossing to the second monitor

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 02. Mai 2025 - 07:51

I'm on Fedora 42 with an NVIDIA RTX 3080. Chivalry 2 had been working perfectly until today. Now, the mouse cursor no longer locks to my main monitor while playing. When I move the mouse to the left, it crosses over to my second screen.

This issue only happens with Chivalry 2 . All other games (like CS:GO) work completely fine.

Here’s what I’ve tried so far:

  1. Switching between different Proton versions
  2. Disabling the Steam overlay
  3. Verifying NVIDIA drivers
  4. Reinstalling the game
  5. Switching between fullscreen and windowed fullscreen modes in-game

None of these steps resolved the issue.

I'd really appreciate any help since it's my favorite game to play...

How can I make Xfce not go into power saving when gaming with a controller?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 02. Mai 2025 - 07:41

Hey all,

I'm using Arch Linux with Xfce and at the moment I'm seeing that when I play games with a controller, the screen will eventually enter power save from what I presume to be the system thinking it's not in use because no keyboard or mouse actions have been detected.

I ran into this issue in GNOME as well, but with GNOME I had the option of either using the Caffeine extension or using the gamemoderun launch option with Steam. I figured I'd go with the latter, but it's actually not working for me this time around with Xfce.

I tried looking this up, but maybe I'm just not working my problem right because I haven't had much luck finding anything and the one thing I found ended up being on Windows not Linux. Hoping I can get some assistance here :)

Sharing Wemod Pro

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 02. Mai 2025 - 07:30

I'm splitting my WeMod Pro subscription. I had been sharing it with two other people without any issues. Now it's just the two of us, and I'm looking for a third person. If you're interested, send me a DM.

Cs2 Issues

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 02. Mai 2025 - 06:36

I am currently trying to run CS2 on Linux, as my mates and I play it. However, I am having some mishaps, e.g. Can't click on menu 90% I open it, goes to wrong monitor, doesn't recognise my other monitor has a refresh rate, mouse movement becomes glued to the middle part of the screen (even when playing native res).

Anyone to figured out how to make Cs stable to use on linux? I live in Australia, so Internet is terrible and won't be able to see if this happens in other games until tomorrow.

Drivers Up-to-Date, System Up-to-Date.

Distro: Fedora 42 Workspace: Gnome GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X

Has anyone tried modding Oblivion Remastered?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 02. Mai 2025 - 06:35

I’m new to Linux as of this week, and I’ve been playing Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered since the first 30 minutes that I installed Linux Mint. I recently ran into a bug during a quest and I cannot proceed any further. I know I can just reload a save, but I thought just maybe I could try installing mods through Vortex. It doesn’t seem to work. My game launches fine (a lot slower than normally) and it crashed after I tried to go outside. This makes sense because both MO2 and SteamTinkerLaunch tell you what games you can mod after you install them. Anyways, I’m really interested to see if anyone has found a workaround so far.

Steam games suddenly no longer using NVIDIA GPU

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 02. Mai 2025 - 05:08

Hello, I am running debian 12 and steam flatpak on an intel + nvidia rtx3060 laptop, with nvidia-535.183. Since I first installed, everything was working great for gaming. Last night, My games, e.g., Helldivers 2, started launching only on the Intel integrated GPU. Below are the troubleshooting steps I did:

  • DRI_PRIME=1 %command% inside game launch options
  • __NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __VK_LAYER_NV_optimus=NVIDIA_only __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia %command% inside game launch options
  • Launch steam flatpak from cli with DRI_PRIME=1 flatpak run com.valvesoftware.Steam
  • Launch steam flatpak from cli with __NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __VK_LAYER_NV_optimus=NVIDIA_only __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia flatpak run com.valvesoftware.Steam
  • Update nvidia driver flatpaks
  • Update system including nvidia-drivers (apt upgrade) to 535.216
    • from kernel 6.1.106-3 to 6.1.135-1
  • Reinstall Game

However, the game only detects and runs on the intel GPU. The only system change I had recently was that I had removed miniconda folders then restored them.

I am not sure what else to do and am looking at full reinstall as the last resort.

Please help. Thank you!

Patching with ProtonTricks

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 02. Mai 2025 - 04:34

heya!

i'm trying to install an exe patch to a Steam game using protontricks but I've quickly realized I have no idea what I'm doing.
i read on protondb that I need to place the exe in the folder and install with protontricks but it doesn't say anything further so I'm a bit lost as I've never used protontricks prior.

Marvel Rivals won't launch (how to play tutorial)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 02. Mai 2025 - 03:38

I tried everything, nothing worked and I am sure this is same for others but I literally was writing "help post" and was launching Marvel Rivals just to screenshot error window, and aha it worked.

Anyways, so how did I finally do it?

  1. Since I am NVIDIA gpu user, I don't know if this would work for others but this is what worked for me, first thing I did was installing Mesa thingy drivers since I heard its essential to making game run. Go look at this link https://itsfoss.com/install-mesa-ubuntu

To the chase, the website basically tells you to run commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers sudo apt update sudo apt upgrade

Make sure to press Y to confirm, etc just follow along if you know what to do. I only used mint linux for literally few days and i already figured out lot of stuff

And that's it. Now, go to Steam and make sure to use Proton Experimental, BUT before you launch the game, etc, make sure to search "Proton Experimental" and enter Properties > Betas, choose "cutting edge", it should be at top. There's multiple cutting edges, but latest one is at the top and that's one that you want. It is basically just ultra-alpha test proton, or whatever.

Once you had done that, go to Marvel Rivals and enter Properties, type this in the Launch Arguments:

SteamDeck=1 %command%

If this didn't work for you then I feel sad for you. I personally had searched for hours and spent lot of time trying to crack down this, there's not enough guides anywhere so i made this to hopefully hope others.

The results, unfortunately seems to be different for everyone. Be it different distros, different GPUs, NVIDIA or AMD, or even Intel, there seems to be unlikely truly single hackfix that will work for everyone.

Edit: To talk about the Mesa thing, it's basically support for OpenGL/Vulkan graphics on Linux, I apparently didn't know about Mesa's existence since other games worked for me fine but I guess this is like 'must-to-have' for Linux gaming, since some games depends on DirectX12 and such which is exclusive features of OpenGL. The "error log" I got is something along the lines that my system doesn't support DirectX12, and that I don't have any GPU drivers. Again, I do want to confirm that I do not know if this will work for everyone since some people seems to have issues even though they have Mesa installed.

TLDR: Type sudo commands from above in Terminal, confirm everything, add "SteamDeck=1 %command%" launch argument to Marvel Rivals and smash that play button submitted by /u/Minecox

Thoughts on three separate partitions for root, home, and games?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 02. Mai 2025 - 03:10

TL;DR: Any thoughts on having three separate partitions for my Linux install? One for root, one for home, and one for my games. There will be a fourth partition for games that I need to run on Windows, so I want the freedom to resize and/or delete the partitions for my games as much as I want. Not sure if this setup could cause headaches though.

After Windows 11 has been giving me more and more grief year over year, I've decided to give Linux another chance, after trying a few years ago. With the massive progress that's been made with Proton since then, I'm hoping I can (almost) entirely eliminate my need for Windows. I'd say 90%+ of what I do on my PC is game.

I hop into Linux machines from time-to-time for work, but I'm not super familiar with it; especially in the context of a home PC where I want to keep tinkering and maintenance to an absolute minimum.

Here's my plan and question:

I'm getting a new 2TB SSD. I plan to put four partitions on it:

  1. Root
  2. Home
  3. Linux games
  4. Windows games

While I'm hoping I can run most (or all) of my games on Linux, I'm fairly certain that there will be at least some that I'll have to suck it up and play on Windows. For that reason, I want some space reserved on the new SSD for both Linux games and Windows games. However, I want the freedom to resize these partitions without too much risk of losing data in my Root and Home partitions (I'll still do regular backups, of course). Worst case, if I need to simply delete my games partitions, I can do that and just reinstall all my games.

Does this sound like a good approach? Are there any potential issues with doing this? I'm a bit concerned that there could be issues with Proton running games from a separate partition. Admittedly, that concern is based on nothing, but I'm trying to set myself up for as little work as possible for maintaining my PC.

Also, I'm open to other suggestions. Thanks!
