What CPU and GPU should I get with/for this HP Z2 SFF G9 computer for a linux daily driver with light gaming?

30. Mai 2024 - 14:46

I am buying an HP Z2 SFF G9 to run Linux for my daily driver and some light gaming. I know I could build my own but I don't have time/patience and I want the exact dimensions/size of this HP SFF case.

https://www.hp.com/us-en/shop/ConfigureView?langId=-1&storeId=10151&catalogId=10051&catEntryId=3074457345620313318&urlLangId=&quantity=1

The only thing I want to get pre-installed from HP is the CPU and PSU. I will upgrade the RAM, add disk, and a GPU myself. I will get the 550 W PSU.

I don't have a budget per-se and am okay to get the most expensive CPU they have -- the Intel® Core™ i9-13900K -- but I don't know enough about CPUs to know if it's actually good and worth getting. If I can save some money for a CPU that's equally good, then why not.

HP's GPU prices are high so I'll get my own GPU. Probably an AMD GPU cause it's better with Linux gaming, right? What GPU would be good?

This is how I've configured it so far:

  • HP Z2 Small Form Factor Base Unit - 550 W
  • Intel® Core™ i9-13900K Processor (3.0 GHz, up to 5.8 GHz w/Boost, 36 MB cache, 24 core, 125W) + Intel® UHD Graphics 770
  • 8 GB (1 x 8 GB) DDR5-4800 UDIMM Memory (I'll upgrade myself)
  • No OS; I'll install Kubuntu
  • 9.5mm DVD-Writer 1st Optical Disc Drive

Cyberpunk 2077: FSR better than DLSS on Nvidia?

30. Mai 2024 - 14:39

Hi, just a quick check if I'm crazy or if something is broken on my end but I just spent some time testing the 550.69 driver after being on 535 for a long time. I have a 4070 Ti and I'm running it on a dual monitor setup with a 120 Hz 1440p display (so no VRR possible for now) - this is a combination that sometimes requires some delicate tweaking to get a good compromise between graphical bells and whistles and consistent 60 or 120 fps. In most DLSS-supported games I haven't had any issues on Linux, but Cyberpunk 2077 remains one of the only games where I definitely do see some issues compared to when I used Windows half a year ago and I couldn't really find any good combination of settings that would give me at least some nice RT effects. So this was the obvious game to test.

So, today I wanted to see if the newer driver helps (and indeed it does a little bit). But I still noticed that the DLSS fps gain was not quite as substantial as I would expect, there were some minor stuttering issues and turning on RT still tanked performance. In addition, as other people have already reported here, Cyberpunk (still!) seems to have some odd visual glitches with DLSS where LOD transitions would show up as black artifacts every now and then which was quite distracting.

So as a last resort I switched from DLSS to FSR 2.1 and I'm not sure if I'm crazy or not, but both visual quality (no artefacts!) and performance seemed to much more consistent, even with RT on. I do notice some slight degradation in terms of aliasing compared to DLSS, but the overall smoothness and image quality looks actually better to me. I think it's a better overall experience.

Thanks to FSR 2.1 I finally settled on 1440p, mostly High to Ultra settings, RT reflections on and RT lighting to Ultra and I'm getting nice and consistent 60 fps and it looks quite amazing without any obvious artifacts. Now, if I could also get frame generation, I would be pretty much where I was in terms of the experience back on Windows.

Did anybody here notice the same improvement when switching from DLSS to FSR? Or do you have any other tips for running the latest version of Cyberpunk on Nvidia?

NVidia or AMD GPUs?

30. Mai 2024 - 14:31

Hello, I know this is an old and stupid question. I am a noob to Linux I have used Ubuntu 22 Virtual Machine for Apache Web Dev. I plan to buy a Laptop and I read that AMD GPUs are more Open Source and has less issues on Linux compared to NVidia in this old post https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/s/OQSQPHAjtX. I plan to install Arch Linux as a distro for the GUI I am not sure yet. Have you guys tested out any new games with NVidia gpus on Linux like Baldur's Gate 3, Ghost of Tsushima or old games like Cyberpunk, Elden Ring , Apex Legends, Sea of Thieves. I would like to read your experiences with AMD or NVidia gpus. Thanks!

Capes released with native Linux support

30. Mai 2024 - 12:07

Capes has been released. The blurb:
"Superheroes clash in this turn based strategy game. Recruit, train, and deploy your team in order to take back the city from the villains that hold it hostage."

Mixed reviews on Steam but at least it's native.

Getting games to run wine

30. Mai 2024 - 12:01

Hi everyone I know WoW has been supported by wine for years. Turtle WoW was great until they patched it. Now you get naked people everywhere can can't talk or logout. I feel there is a problem with case sensitive with there new patch, but other Linux people are running it fine. I am not sure what to do next. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Invert mouse axis horizontally on Wayland

30. Mai 2024 - 11:54

Looking for any methods to make it so when I move my physical mouse to the left, the cursor would move to the right.

Wayland. Not X11. I'm not planning on using X11, and xinput is not even installed by default.

So far, I've stumbled upon libinput and libevdev-tweak-device, but I don't believe either of them is capable of reversing a one axis input.

libinput says my mouse doesn't support calibration, according to the list-devices, so I doubt I can change the calibration matrix.

libevdev-tweak-device I've tried this command:
libevdev-tweak-device --abs ABS-X --min 0 --max 0 /dev/input/event15
libevdev-tweak-device --abs ABS-RX --min 0 --max 0 /dev/input/event15
but they did literally nothing.
I've read somewhere that you are supposed to turn libevdev on, before you can meddle with it.
Are we out of Wayland ways to do that?

Help with old nVidia GPU (K1000M) on Xubuntu

30. Mai 2024 - 11:10

Hi all,

I just recently bought an old HP EliteBook 8570w with an nVidia K1000M GPU (1GB VRAM) and 16 GB RAM. Using Xubuntu on it works really well, but I am having very low 3D graphics performance..
I installed the 470 driver according to this page: Which driver for a Quadro K1000M notebook - Graphics / Linux / Linux - NVIDIA Developer Forums

The system recognizes the GPU properly, but as said, performance is incredibly low. I get substantially higher fps on my office notebook (a 3 year old DELL with i5 CPU and no dedicated GPU). Even old games like TeamFortress 2 only run more or less playable on minimum Graphics Settings... This cannot be, right?

Any ideas or hints what I could do? Should I switch to another distro? I was reading somewhere that the xfce-Mint or something like PopOS should have better driver handling than Xubuntu, but I have noooo experience in that field...

Any hints would be greatly appreciated!

Issues playing with dualsense via cable

30. Mai 2024 - 11:07

Hi all,

More of a query, when I go to plug in my dualsense controller via usb c to my pc, my controller vibrates and doesn't do anything else I could be doing something silly I'm sure so thought best to consult yourselves if theres and easy fix for the issue.

I am using Linux mint cinnamon, the ps5 controller is the regular one not the pro/elite one. I would mention games but as I cannot even get it to work with them doesn't seem to relevant but regardless I'll be playing alan wake 1 and 2 through steam downloaded through the heroic launcher.

If it turns out it won't work wired then that's alright I'll just use my xbox controller instead no harm

Many thanks

Elden Ring EAC Launch Error 261

30. Mai 2024 - 10:58

Hey all, I'm a bit lost. Maybe some of you can help out with this mess. A few weeks ago I started Elden Ring again after a longer break and suddenly EAC has problems, showing "Launch Error: 261" on every start. Offline Mode (swapping "*.exe") is running fine.

Elden Ring is installed on a secondary drive (btrfs) with steam library /steam_2tb/steamlib

In my $PREFIX/../EasyAntiCheat/anticheatlauncher.log the following is reported:

... [10:34:51:002] [Windows] [EAC Launcher] [Info] Current progress: 100 (8604900/8604900). [10:34:51:003] [Windows] [EAC Launcher] [Info] Current progress: 100 (1/1). [10:34:52:357] [Windows] [EAC Launcher] [Info] Launcher finished with: 208, 'Launch Error: 261'.

Further down the sub-dirs loader.log reports:

... [2024.05.30-10.34.51] Download Progress: 100 [2024.05.30-10.34.51] Download Progress: 100 [2024.05.30-10.34.51] [Connection] Connect result: No error (0) Response Code: 200 Destination IP: 13.33.187.113 [2024.05.30-10.34.51] Download Progress: 100 [2024.05.30-10.34.51] [EAC Callback] Code: 502. Message: 'Launch Error: 261'.

I already tried:

  • fully updating my system (Arch btw) a few times, no ignored packages
  • Checking file integrity
  • Different versions of Proton (from 6.X to 9.2 GE)
  • Running via Steam Native and Steam Runtime
  • Reinstalling the Game (with former prefix removed)
  • Reinstalling Proton EAC Runtime
  • Deleting the prefix
  • Deleting EAC dir in the prefix
  • Manually installing EAC within the prefix
  • New prefix without steam cloud sync

Sadly, according to this sub and ProtonDB this game should run without problems OOTB (as this was the case a few weeks/months(?) ago). Other games run just fine.

I dont think this is a glibc problem as others on Arch don't experience this and I don't intend on installing such a fundamental package from AUR repo.

AMD Graphics Driver level setting i.e. Adrenaline Software

30. Mai 2024 - 10:49

Hey Guys, Looking at making the move to Ubuntu completely but I have a few things holding me back for example the support for graphic driver level customization like Adrenaline Software etc.

I want to be able to use AFMF, FSR etc and adjust GPU settings on the fly.

Are there options available for such things as Windows still has the most support

Also multiplayer games like Xdefiant, how are they on Linux?

System freeze when gaming

30. Mai 2024 - 09:44

Hello,

I reinstalled my laptop a few days ago and I'm trying to play different games:

  • Ghost of tshushima
  • Metro exodus
  • Ori and the blind forest
  • Crusader king 3

However, I'm having a major problem where the system freezes randomly, sometimes after a few seconds, sometimes after an hour or more.

My first thought was to look at the log, but nothing conclusive appears: https://pastebin.com/BFU3RVih , the freeze occurs a little before 19h57m18s, before the SysRQ request.

I thought it might be a temperature problem, but after several tests, they occur even when the system seems to be cold: CPU: 55°C GPU: 49°C.

What's more, even when the system is relatively warm, the freeze doesn't occur at the heat spike that can be recorded earlier in the logs.

As far as I'm concerned, but I could be wrong, a problem due to temperature doesn't allow sysrq commands since the system locks up completely.

What I tried:
I increased the vm.max_map_count to 2147483642, without solving the problem.
I’ve added an 8GB swap file.
I’ve installed thermald.
Change the proton version (although this happens in native games like Metro Exodus).
Trying Manjaro 6.6 LTS Kernel.

Is mangohud and goverlay really that necessary to game on Linux?

30. Mai 2024 - 08:40

I'm on linux mint 21.3, and i've tried the software manager, the terminal, and github to get them working. I never could get them working but i'm wondering if it's even that necessary for casual gaming.
