Should I install the Steam Deck OS on my PC or go with something else?

21. März 2025 - 13:10

I’ve tried gaming on Linux many times, but I always end up back on Windows because of small issues. But after getting a Steam Deck, I’m way more confident about it since I haven’t had any problems running games on it.

But every time that I try it my PC had Nvidia GPU and Intel CPU,maybe that's why I had so many compatibility issues in the past with Linux because of drivers.

Now I’m building a PC with full AMD (GPU and CPU) to have the best compatibility possible, and I’m thinking about installing the Steam OS (Steam Ddck recovery image) on it. But I’m wondering… is that a good call? Or should I go with something like ChimeraOS or HoloISO that’s more tailored for PC hardware?

Can I run into any problems for using the steam deck Image on PC? Would love to hear some tips about it.

Using Gamemode without a card0?

21. März 2025 - 13:06

I have an nvidia card that gamemode refuses to apply settings to. I'm running fedora 41 and the /sys/class/drm directory only contains folders for card1 (integrated amd) and card2 (nvidia 4070s). When I run gamemoded -t with the option "gpu_device=2" set in the global config it ignores that part and goes after card0 anyway, then outputs this failure:

ERROR: Couldn't open vendor file at /sys/class/drm/card0/device/vendor, will not apply gpu optimisations!

ERROR: Failed to find Nvidia GPU with expected index!

ERROR: Error querying valid values for attribute 'GPUGraphicsClockOffset' on

[gpu:0] specified in query '[gpu:0]/GPUGraphicsClockOffset[4]' (No such

attribute).

ERROR: Failed to parse output for "[gpu:0]/GPUGraphicsClockOffset[4]" output was ""!

ERROR: External process failed with exit code 1

ERROR: Output was:

ERROR: Failed to call gpuclockctl, could not get values!

ERROR: Could not get current GPU info, see above!

Is the config option supposed to say something else? How can I force it to look at the right card?

AMD vs NVIDIA? Intel?!

21. März 2025 - 12:48

Im currently working towards building my first PC, i currently have a laptop

And Im also very much inclined to switching to Linux (Im in the midst of doing my research overall) My question here is which of these 2 would be preferable? I have seen that Nvidia can be a bit of an issue with the drivers, is it true?

How do they stack up in terms of gaming performances? Is it the same as Windows where it just comes down to the raw power of the gpu or does Linux have some sort of advantage for either One?

Also! How does Intel stack up? Their b580 card was pretty good for the price and Im curious to see what they Will do with their Next GPUs, but how did their current gen fair?

Changing OS

21. März 2025 - 12:12

Hi all

Just a quick one, I'm running a 6700k & 1080ti on Linux mint cinnamon.

I've managed to get it all sorted, games play stable so far ( Biggest stress test would be either WoW - Cataclysm & Satisfactory )

I know the kernel is older on Mints LTS.

My question is with my specs, is there any point moving to say Fedora or Bazzite, would there be any notable difference?

This machine won't be getting upgraded any further

I've tried Nobara & PopOS both seem fine but mint was just a bit more comfortable

Best NVIDIA-based laptop for Gaming + Coding.

21. März 2025 - 11:31

Hello there!

I’m looking for the most compatible laptop for both gaming (like HD2, WoW, etc.) and Android development. I’m an AMD (or “red”) fan, but unfortunately, there’s no mobile port for the 7900XTX. The highest option currently available is the 7800 (which I already use on my desktop).

The issue is that the 7800XT doesn’t have enough power to run HD2 on ultra settings, which is what I aim for. Another challenge is that the only company I’ve found producing laptops with AMD graphics is Tuxedo. Although they’re a great company with excellent laptops, the 7800 still falls short of my performance needs.

As for my Linux experience, I’m currently on Nobara 41. Before that, I used pure Arch with GNOME. Both provided a great experience, so I can comfortably work with Arch-based or Fedora-based distros.

Hence, my questions are:

  1. What’s the best NVIDIA-based option (like a 3080 or 3090) that offers excellent Linux compatibility?
  2. Which distro would pair best with such a laptop?

Help, my system keeps freezing

21. März 2025 - 09:55

Hi there,

I am using a Huawei Matebook D 14, AMD Ryzen 5 2500U with Radeon Vega Mobile Gfx, and Endeavour OS (but this problem keeps happening in Pop os and other distros I've been trying over the past years).

Basically, the system would randomly freeze. Yesterday, for example, I was trying to play Golf with friends on Steam, with the lowest settings. In the first 5 mins, the system froze 3 times, I ended up not playing. Strange enough, I had been playing Portal for 1h prior, with no issues.

The problem also exists when I'm on a videocall and I'm sharing my screen... I am getting quite frustrated! :(

Thanks to whoever will try to help!

Is AC Shadows working?

21. März 2025 - 09:53

I've seen a few posts referencing slight issue with running AC Shadows through proton on steam.

I'm running Fedora 41 on my desktop and wouldn't mind giving it a go so just wondered if anyone was having a good experience so far?

Force AC Shadows out of “SteamDeck” mode

21. März 2025 - 08:50

Force AC Shadows out of “steamdeck” mode

Greetings fellow gamers. As probably some of you know newly released Assassin’s Creed Shadows is certified on SteamDeck which is not bad.

What is really bad, that while used on a high-end AMD desktop with bazzite-deck variant I can’t force the game out of “steamdeck” mode, when FPS is capped and graphical settings missing out of game’s menu.

I tried to launch with SteamDeck=0 parameter in Steam, but seems that Ubisoft decided to ignore it or simply use their own routine to detect it being launched on “SteamOS” (like they think).

I tried to clean the games prefix and start all over again with aforementioned parameter with no luck.

I tried using Lutris on desktop with ProtonGE and separate prefix again with no luck.

As the game being just released I cant seem to find a solution to unlock all the graphical settings as most people who play on bazzite plays it on handheld and don’t care about it missing settings.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

NFS Most Wanted: Steam any way to launch this thing at all?

21. März 2025 - 07:45

Steam sale is on recently I said I wouldn't mind spending nothing on some games. I really wanted to play NFSMW and tried a lot of abandonware and stuff from online which didn't work for me. Thought maybe I'll just purchase it although I knew EA kinda sucks with support. Tried anyway and no surprise it doesn't work. EA Launcher starts, then shuts off. The game doesn't seem to start. I was wondering if someone on a linux machine got steam NFSMW to run or if there is any luck that I have playing this game at all? I won't mind if this was a waste of money since the discounted price I got it for is just dirt value, but I'd kinda kill to play this. Proton version I'm running is 8.0-5

Weird artifacting

21. März 2025 - 06:35

Hello y’all,

I’m trying to make the switch over to Linux and have ran into an issue where my games will either give me a green screen and crash with the audio still playing or do this weird artifacting like in the image. I’ve also noticed when I initially boot I also see this artifacting on my second monitor for a split second. I’m running an i7-13700k and a RX 9070XT on Linux mint with the most recent version of the Linux kernel. Hoping someone can help me with this issue!

Thank you in advance!

Lands of Lore III (1999 game)

21. März 2025 - 05:38

I'm on POP!_OS and I had what looks like a good install of the game. Playing though. I put it in maximum resolution which usually gives a better distance view, but that did not work here. Everything seems too close up to me though. It's hard to maneuver around and see anything, because so many things fill my screen that shouldn't fill my screen. I started out in default which was the lowest settings for 1999 machines.
Any ideas about what I can/should try to monkey with?
Edit: I did go into configure and changed the screen resolution there. No help. Also; The appearance is also as if I'm crouched like in games where you can crouch or sneak.

Best distro for 9070XT support currently?

21. März 2025 - 04:28

I've been using Bazzite for a couple of years with a 7800XT, I upgraded to a 9070XT at launch, and obviously there's some growing pains across a lot of distros. I fell back on Windows 11 in a dual boot setup, but, well, it's Windows. Wondering which distros have made the most headway with 9070XT support, not FSR4 support obviously since it's a waiting game with AMD for that, but just general stability and reliability when it comes to gaming on the newer cards. Looking for personal experiences from users with the RX9000 series cards.

So will pretty much any single player game on Steam run on Linux?

21. März 2025 - 02:54

I know most of Linux's gaming issues come from how anticheat is implemented in mulitplayer games, and raw performance seems to be close to Windows nowadays, so are there still any notable single player games that will give Linux issues anymore?

Marvel Rivals defaults to integrated GPU

21. März 2025 - 02:48

I have an AMD Ryzen 5 5600G and recently got an Radeon 6600. I tried launching Marvel rivals and it defaults to the integrated graphics. So I added the DRI_PRIME=1 to my launch command and it still uses integrated graphics. I tried with DRG Survivor with mangohud and that used the dedicated graphics. So I went back and removed the DRI_PRIME command from Marvel Rivals and it still uses integrated graphics.

Marvel Rivals doesn't have an option in the settings to choose a graphics card so I'm a bit lost on what to do here. I'm using an up to date Arch build with Wayland and KDE.
