Tips to improve RTX performance?

11. Mai 2025 - 00:03

Good evening, I am here to ask for advice on if it's possible to improve performance with ray tracing enabled, specifications are as follows:

Garuda Linux, up to date. Ryzen 7 5700G. RTX 3070. 16GB RAM.

In particular, I want to improve performance in The Outlast Trials. It runs perfectly for me without RT, but suffers frame drops with it enabled. It seems to put a lot of strain on my PC. I am using Steam with its built-in Proton. My friend is able to run it perfectly with RT on windows with similar, slightly worse PC specs.

I am fine without it of course, maybe it is the price I pay for using Linux, but the visual improvement is nice especially for screenshots. thanks in advance for any tips :)

NVIDIA Drivers

10. Mai 2025 - 23:55

I'm new to Linux, I have a Nvidia RTX 4060, I installed the drivers from the driver manager and selected the first option that said "recommended" and then rebooted my system. Is there something else I should do? I've seen a ton of people talking about them not being the latest ones and so on.

EDIT: I'm on Mint 22.1

Looking for a HWinfo alternative that will log my maximum CPU and GPU temps for Gnome Bazzite

10. Mai 2025 - 23:48

I’ve tried vitals, and it seems like it’d do what I want, but it only shows max gpu temp, not cpu for some reason. I know Mangohud exists, but I want something I can run in the background and then look at after gaming to see my maximum temps, like HWinfo.

HoYoPlay says i don't have enough storage space to install Genshin but i do

10. Mai 2025 - 23:33

I'm trying to install Genshin Impact on a drive that isn't my main drive. i have it properly mounted and there is 660.9GB of free space on it, when i try to download Genshin to a file in that drive it says the drive only has 3.81GB free which is not remotely accurate. What could be causing this??

Loading -> Error/Nothing (NBA 2K25)

10. Mai 2025 - 23:24

Been having this issue for several games.
Been trying all different Protons, including GE. Either absolutely nothing happens, or the error in the image occur, or the NBA2K25 loadscreen pops up then disappear, and the Play button becomes green again.

Also tried to install the game in different partitions, including local partition where Steam resides.

Any suggestions?

Weird Issue With Frame Drops on Mouse or Keyboard Input

10. Mai 2025 - 22:43

Hey all, hoping someone here has seen this before and can point me in the right direction. Across many different distros (Manjaro, Garuda, Fedora, Bazzite, Kubuntu), I have been getting an issue after about 45 minutes of gameplay where I get sudden framerate drops from 100+ to 18-20 for a second every 10 seconds or so. This happens in every game I've played, whether native or using Proton. If I restart the game, it's fine for another 45 minutes.

I finally narrowed this down to being tied to input from my mouse and keyboard. If I'm just sitting there, not touching them, no matter how much is going on on the screen, no drops. So today, when it started happening, I decided to plug in my PS5 controller. Absolutely no issues whatsoever when using that. However, that doesn't work for all the games I play, and, frankly, I'm pretty awful on a controller, so it's not really a solution for me.

Things I've tried:

  • Updating BIOS
  • Disabling Legacy USB Support in BIOS
  • Unplugging all other USB devices (this was before I realized the controller worked fine)
  • Different mouse and keyboard
  • Only mouse or keyboard plugged in (with either, input still caused drops)
  • Different desktop environments (KDE and Gnome, no difference, not suprisingly)
  • Different/disabled XMP profiles for memory
  • Searching distro forms/Reddit...can't seem to find anyone with quite this issue

System Specs:

  • Gigabyte B650 Auros Elite AX V2 Motherboard
  • AMD 9700X
  • 32GB 6000MHz Ram (Teamgroup)
  • Radeon 6800
  • WD Black 1TB NVMe SSD
  • Currently running Bazzite KDE

Any input or assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Question about Steam games and dual boot

10. Mai 2025 - 22:35

On a computer set up to dual boot Windows 10 and Linux, would I be able to use the same installation of a game on both operating systems (assuming that I am using Proton to run the game under Linux)? My Steam games are currently installed on a separate drive from the OS and the drive is formatted with NTFS.

State of hardware acceleration in Chromium based browsers and NVIDIA drivers in generall

10. Mai 2025 - 22:31

Hey, I'd like to ask what is the state of hardware acceleration in Chromium browsers, I'd like to switch from Win 11 to Cachy OS and what I saw is that nvidia-vaapi driver from GitHub works only in Firefox but I really would like to use chromium or brave, becouse I daily use Messenger which only works in Chromium.

Also I would like to ask about state of Nvidia drivers on Linux, in windows last year I'm seeing constant decrease of stability of the driver, for example: in some games like WoT, Sons of the forest or BF1, im getting issues like driver resets, black screens or issues that says that my GPU has been removed from my system. Do those issues exist in Linux? I'm getting a headache almost every time I boot into Windows.

10. Mai 2025 - 22:11

Opollo free launch for linux and Steam Deck - It's weirdly satisfying to be developing for Linux, hope there's some fun to be found for you guys! Feedback is of course welcomed! & if anyone knows anything about how other games tackle the Steam Decks...

10. Mai 2025 - 21:58

Opollo - little indie arcade shoot em up for Linux and the steam deck!

We've heard that the refresh rate on steam deck can be altered... How do games handle that without running fast or slow?

Is Ray Tracing performance poor on Linux?

10. Mai 2025 - 21:57

I've been using Linux for about three weeks now.
Distribution: EndeavourOS
Desktop Environment: GNOME 48.1 running under an XWayland session.
GPU and GPU's version: Nvidia 4060 Ti, 575.xx driver.

Proton Version: Proton GE latest.

And let me just say — I'm absolutely loving it. It's been a great experience overall. I also played games, and in fact, the first game I finished was Dark Souls Remastered.

Now, here’s my concern. My GPU is an RTX 4060 Ti, and I’ve noticed something strange with Cyberpunk 2077. I'm running it at 1080p, Ultra settings, Ray Tracing enabled, and DLSS 3 Frame Generation turned on. However, the performance drops significantly — I get frame rates below 60 FPS.

Interestingly, on Windows, using the exact same settings, the performance was much smoother and I consistently got higher FPS. But when I disable Ray Tracing on Linux, the game runs much better.

So my question is:
Are there any extra parameters or tweaks I should be using on Linux to get better Ray Tracing performance?

Thanks in advance!

Dual booting.

10. Mai 2025 - 21:48

Hello everyone,
I'm currently using Windows 11 on my PC, mainly for both gaming and studying/coding. I've been reading a lot about Linux lately, and I'm thinking of trying it out. Many people have suggested Linux Mint as a good option for beginners.

I have a couple of questions:

  1. Do I need to transfer the files for every game to Linux in order to play with my save data? Or can Linux read the game files directly from my Windows?
  2. For better space optimization—let’s say I install all the games and they run perfectly on Linux—if I uninstall the same games from Windows, would that affect or damage the saves on Linux? (Why should I have two copies of each game?)

Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Considering switching gaming laptop to Ubuntu, but I can't find answers to these questions anywhere.

10. Mai 2025 - 21:47

Hey all,

Something I really like doing on windows is using the blurbusters recommended G sync settings, which is using G sync, Reflex, and Nvidia Control Panel V Sync in order to cancel out V sync input delay and have a smooth gaming experience. I also use Nvidia Control Panel to cap fps, as it has the least input latency (compared to RTSS).

Are these features available on linux? They make my games very smooth while having low latency. I'd consider the lack of these features to be a deal breaker.

Thanks!

Rocket League stuck on running (Mint 22.1)

10. Mai 2025 - 21:47

I'm trying to run Rocket League (Steam) on Mint and while it used to run yesterday today it's stuck on running and the game window is nowhere to be found. Tried changing versions from Hotfix to Experimental to 9.0 to GE, etc. Any fix for an issue like this?

Question About Limo Mod Manager

10. Mai 2025 - 21:43

I'm wondering how it manages prefixes. Does it call Skyrims prefix itself? So for example anything like dependencies like dotnet6 or something does it go to 611670, or does it make its own prefix? I would like to add a, separate portion on NaK for Limo that gets users setup with all the dependencies for like Synthesis, EasyNPC, Pandora. OR does Limo automatically install all of that? IS there a discord I could join or check out? I mean I could always try it out, and go from there but I just want to get an idea before I go in and start making something in my script. Oh and one more thing, how does this work for GoG users?

Is there a list of games that run as good if not better in Linux than on Windows ?

10. Mai 2025 - 21:31

I'm really considering making the switch in the near future, if not dual-boot Linux, as Windows or more specifically Microsoft is becoming increasingly worse and more scummy in their practices. Sadly as someone more gaming focused, it's hard to ignore how egregious the performance of modern games is, losing 5 fps when your .1% lows is above 90 is not a big deal, but the same amount lost when your .1% lows barely exceed 50 is game breaking. A list would really help to decide if it's worth the hassle, or at least better understand how much space I should allocate when partitioning the drive.

game not launching with mesa 25.1.0

10. Mai 2025 - 21:25

I just updated to mesa 25.1.0 but then on steam Deadlock was running but no window appeared. in the terminal I saw this. wine client write: Invalid argument

From a forum it is related to graphic driver. Uninstalling those latest drivers solved the issue.

Not sure if more people have some issues with 25.1.0

Should I stick for the moment with older drivers?

banished. played through steam is not working

10. Mai 2025 - 21:17

I have never had issues with banished working through steam proton. but the last time i reinstalled my OS something broke the game. i think its in the audio. dx11 runs well, but without audio. doesn't crash. dx9 looks like it runs well with sound, but freezes perminately after about 10m sometimes more or less. it does get a frame rate drop right before it freezes.

Idk how to fix this. is there a way i can make sure my directx is up to date maybe? ive tried running it through basicly every version of proton i can think of. GE-9-5, proton 9... 8... 5... they all give similar results. either absolutely no sound, or it freezes.

And this is using it in windowed mode, cuz fullscreen crashes imediately.

a year ago i was playing this on pop_os! (same distro im on now) no issues. is it posible i need an audio driver update?... or downgrade something? idk. i just wanna play chill game.

can i disable the music in-game maybe? it could be a loop issue that makes it crash?
