Fedora Steam games do not launch after some updates

31. August 2025 - 14:27

Hello guys i have some problems with Fedora KDE.

After some updates on Fedora my PC acts like in this guy post. https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/s/GQVBdY08JZ

The issue for me this is the second time happening. First time i bricked the OS so i have to reinstall everything.

I reinstalled the OS, installed drivers and apps. After the last updates a few days ago the problem came back. I press play on steam and games do not start. I tried with every Proton version including ProtonGE, nothing works same results.

Does anybody know what i have to do to avoid this behavior? I kind of do not want to remain behind with updates for security reasons...

Steam minimizes games and opens windows saying "shutting down steam" and claiming I need controller updates and

31. August 2025 - 13:18

I have a problem that stumps me mostly because it's so weird I wouldn't know how to start troubleshooting it. When I play some games, most recently Space Marine 2, the game will minimize and the following windows will open:

https://preview.redd.it/leux4va09cmf1.png?width=1250&format=png&auto=webp&s=8fd65fb909f8bdaa302b2fdb8245cccf3eb68c56

https://preview.redd.it/k0nm63c39cmf1.png?width=1250&format=png&auto=webp&s=3ebddaa57ffc31a9c9f74e659f58530e4e77dac9

I have used a ps5 controller on this linux install before, but I updated the firmware of those (in windows, ugh) when these problems showed up. I figured the problem might be because steam sees my keyboard (Mountain Everest Max) as a controller, so I tried running with a generic keyboard, all to no avail. It seems to me all the updates to steam for linux because of steam integration in steam OS should be the cause of these problems, but I can see no way to tell steam I am just launching these games from my desktop.

I use CachyOS, and drivers etc are up to date as far as I aware.

Does anyone have an inkling on how to fix this?

Witcher 3 keeps freezing

31. August 2025 - 13:00

Hi! Witcher 3 keeps freezing randomly. It does not matter what i am doing in the game. The frequency is also random. I tried changing every setting: from 1080p to 4k, from low to high, fsr on and off, fps limiter on and off etc. Nothing works. I have steady 60fps tho. Also tried different proton versions on steam. I don't know how totroubleshoot this. Anyone got any idea?

My setup is: fedora 42 kde, rx6800, 80gb ram ddr4, r7 3800x

Looking for a Step-by-Step Tutorial for Modding GOG/Epic Games on Linux

31. August 2025 - 12:21

Hi everyone,

I'm a returning Linux user trying to get game mods to work, and I could really use some help. I'm sorry if this topic is covered in the FAQ; the link seems to be broken.

I'm stuck on two specific issues:

  • RogueTech for Battletech (GOG): The base game works fine, and the RogueTech launcher successfully installs the mod. However, when I try to start RogueTech, it just launches the unmodded base game instead of loading Modtek.
  • Vortex Manager: I can get it to install, but it doesn't seem to find any of my games. Also, Firefox doesn't recognize how to send the nxm-links to it, so I can't download the mod collections. I've tried installing it in both Bottles and Heroic, and even tried installing a Windows version of Firefox in the same prefix, but no luck.

Since most of my games are from GOG and Epic, I'm looking for a step-by-step, non-Steam tutorial for modding on Linux.

I'm running CachyOS. Any advice or pointers in the right direction would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

New to Linux (Bazzite KDE NVIDIA 5070)

31. August 2025 - 10:41

Windows user since win98, I recently decided to switch to Linux after several years of reflection and testing on a laptop with Optimus (The worst thing that exists for Linux without a mux switch). The choice of distributions was not easy because there are plenty of them and the support for the components is not always plug and play. Using it via my Steam Deck made me want to abandon Windows. I wanted to test Opensuse following different subs that I consulted but the support for my RTX5070 did not allow me to install it easily. So I chose Bazzite Gnome. I love Gnome but I encountered problems when launching games in stretched 4/3 resolution (CS2) and artifacts when sharing a Discord screen. So I opted for the KDE version (less pretty and simplistic) but less buggy in use. For the moment I have not encountered any particular problems and my games run as well or better than under Windows. I understand that Linux will not be a general public solution because of Windows' monopoly at the application level. Nothing is planned for Linux, and tinkering will scare the average user. Windows is an OS where apps are designed to run on it. Linux is a great system but when something doesn't work we often say that it's a problem with the OS while under Windows we don't blame the OS but the application in question. Otherwise I love Linux and I join the party to denounce the monopoly of Windows on our machines with all the MS services which harm performance and privacy. I might try Cachy in the future but arch scares me a little with what I've heard about bricking its system being more common than Bazzite. I hope that Anti-cheats will work on Linux and that developers will be forced to open their doors to other OSes in the future to avoid MS becoming the monopoly of a previously "free" system which is closing day by day like Android and the internet in general is doing at the moment. What I advise to those like me who are hesitant to switch to Linux, make a backup of your important files, and try! What people say on Reddit with their problem etc and regarding NVIDIA is not a generality. It's a question of use and desire. Try it and if it doesn't work as it should there is always a solution by consulting the web. Take 2 or 3 distros with a copy of Windows on a Ventoy USB key, that way you will always have a way to reinstall a working OS if everything doesn't go as planned.

Nier: Automata frametime anomaly

31. August 2025 - 10:34

Linux Mint 22.1 Cinnamon Laptop
Xorg
CPU: quad core Intel Core i5-9300H (-MT MCP-) speed/min/max: 2200/800/4100 MHz
Kernel: 6.8.0-79-generic x86_64
Procs: 331 Shell: Bash inxi: 3.3.34
GTX 1650, NVIDIA-SMI 570.1812 x 8 gb RAM 2666
Ran using lutris (Runner Ge-proton-10-12 with default lutris system settings)

Frametime spikes horribly every 5-7 seconds as is shown on video. No resources are used at their limit, Power Throttling has nothing to do with it. This is happening both when cpu and gpu are undervolted to oblivion (as they are in video) or with no undervolt alltogether. This anomaly is present even at the game's main menu after you start it, it is not connected with location/chars or anything. It feels like either the game itself is faulty or there is something wrong about how it is translated that does this.

My game is modded, i installed Special K (Far) plugin that controls framerate (and it doeos to a degree, smoothing the frametime, but it does not fix the problem). Due to obs recording frametime is a bit shaky overall, but without it it is extremely smooth with exception of these sudden spikes.

Has anyone experienced this issue on Linux?

31. August 2025 - 09:55

The reason why I ask is because I've been experiencing this exact same issue as described by JayZ.

It started occurring maybe about a year ago and happens maybe once every few months.

Basically, the PC will randomly shut down and then I have to do a full power cycle in order for my NVME to show up in the BIOS. TBH I thought my PSU was starting to go but now I'm not so sure.

Here's my current firmware:

john@John-PC:~$ sudo smartctl -a /dev/nvme0n1p6 | grep "Firmware Version"
Firmware Version: 624361WD

Is my drive bricked

31. August 2025 - 09:51

So I used hdparm to erase the drive before installing arch Linux using archinstall. Then while in archinstall, when selecting install, it threw an i/o error.

I was on fedora before attempting to install arch, and everything went unresponsive in fedora. My game crashed, and steam got stuck. So I clicked shutdown but it just froze on shutting down steam. I hard rebooted because the terminal wasn't working, neither the power off button.

When the system booted to the encryption prompt, I entered my encryption password but systemd couldn't load cryptsetup. It just failed.

So I just decided to install arch, I wanted to try it anyway. At first, it worked, but either my Internet connection failed (I'm sure it did because it couldn't connect to the servers) or the SSD just failed.

So I fixed my Internet, selected my SSD in archinstall and set everything up, and when the installer attempted to format, it threw the i/o error. Is it recoverable?

Flickering Models and Shadows In CS 2 Using Ubuntu LTS

31. August 2025 - 09:51

I had not tried CS 2 on this install of Ubuntu until today only to find it doing this. I had played it before on different distros without issue. I am running Ubuntu 24.04.3 LTS. I am using an AMD Ryzen 7 5800X and AMD RX 6800XT. The issue follows into the game on all the models. It's not as bad on low and medium settings, but it's still there. Any help is greatly appreciated! Also, if it helps, I ran the command "lspci -k | grep -EA3 'VGA|3D|Display'" after searching for a command to find my gpu driver and it gave me "Kernel driver in use: amdgpu" and "Kernel modules: amdgpu"

PoE2 Micro Stutter with WASD?

31. August 2025 - 09:37

Anyone else getting micro stutters when using WASD in PoE2? Just outside ClearFell. Watching my FPS, if I press any WASD key my framerate drops from 120 to 80 for a second or 2 then jumps back up to 120. Frame time goes from 8ms to 13ms. really weird. Doesn't seem to be tied to graphics settings. Tried using Proton Experimental...same behavior.

Is it possible to play Ubisoft games with HDR without Lutris?

31. August 2025 - 09:17

Hi,

Since I’m currently having problems with Lutris and I’m really only playing Assassin’s Creed Shadows, I added Ubisoft Connect to Steam as a non-Steam game on a trial basis. I used proton-cachyos (native package) as the compatibility layer.

I then installed the Ubisoft Connect client and ran it via Steam. I downloaded the game in the client and it runs with all the bells and whistles.

However, I can’t activate HDR because it says my display doesn’t support it.

When I start a game normally via Steam, I use the following launch options:
DISPLAY="" DXVK_HDR=1 ENABLE_HDR_WSI=1 game-performance gamemoderun mangohud %command%

Of course, the launch options don’t work in the Ubisoft client. How can I fix this?

Additional question: How can I also use Mangohud in the game?

I also tried it with gamescope:

I'm getting an error when I try to start Assassin's Creed. I tried to run it via the terminal, it doesn't work.

I tried two methods:

First, I created a shortcut from UbisoftConnect.exe in my home folder and specified it:

GPU Tuning - A Word of Caution

31. August 2025 - 08:38

First things first, I have an AMD system in a small ITX case and I use LACT with CoolerControl. I have used them for a little over a year now on my Bazzite system. LACT handles my GPU undervolts/clocks/power/fan curve and CC handles everything on the CPU end.

Some time ago CC added functionality to control the GPU fan and I thought I'd give it a whirl. Centralize all my cooling controls in one location, yknow? Well, if LACT is handling anything on your GPU please don't do this.

Setting CC to modify anything GPU related completely cancels out LACT. I was focused on fine tuning a nicer fan curve in CC and failed to realize that doing so causes my GPU to revert to bog-standard settings (minus fans).

That means things got hot. Very hot.
Big GPU running at stock voltages, and stock clocks which are too high for such a small setup.

Obviously the solution is just to reset CC GPU fan control back to default and reapply the LACT settings, but I just thought I'd relay the information as I hadn't seen it posted anywhere.

I know undervolting a GPU is a pretty common thing to do, especially with AMD gear, so this is something to keep in mind if you were maybe wondering why your setup isn't working correctly.

Steam games won't work anymore

31. August 2025 - 07:03

Distribution: Fedora 42 (Adams)
Kernel Version: 6.16.3-200.fc42.x86_64
CPU: Ryzen 5 9600x
GPU: 9060 xt 16gb Asrock (Challenger)
GPU Driver: OpenGL renderer string: AMD Radeon Graphics (radeonsi, gfx1200, LLVM 20.1.8, DRM 3.64, 6.16.3-200.fc42.x86_64)
Mesa Version: 25.1.7
Wayland
Gnome

I can't play games on steam anymore for some reason even though I could earlier this day... The only notably thing that I remember I did today was go into the bios and activate EXPO profile. I'm having problems with every game in my library, even non-steam games like Genshin Impact, HSR and ZZZ that I got to work using proton but I guess that's another matter since they are not from steam so let's talk about Wuthering Waves (I'm using GE-Protong 10.5, later switched to 10.4 to see if it worked but it didn't), when I launch the game the only thing that happens is the game "trying" to launch if that's the correct word and then closing itself leaving behind this window:

I also get this copied to my clipboard whenever I launch the game:

Fatal error!

Unhandled Exception: 0x20474343

and here's the link to the proton log I got from using PROTON_LOG=1 %command%:

https://pastes.io/protong-log-output

so far I've tried the following fixes:

  • Tried using -dx9 and -dx11 as launch parameters.
  • Tried switching from Vulkan to OpenGL by using: PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %comand% as launch parameter.
  • Tried going back into the bios and switching to the default RAM profile (maybe this was the problem but no it wasn't).
  • Tried verifying the game files to see if there was a problem with them.
  • Tried a different GE-Proton version (10.4).

I've seen posts related to Unhandled Exception: 0x20474343 that mention the solution being uninstalling amdvlk and/or lib32-amdvlk but I don't seem to have these packages installed.

Would appreciate any help you guys could provide... Let me know if there's anything else I need to provide.

Edit: This could be unrelated but now for some reason Sober has stopped working too: EGL Display is null.

Steelseries Sonar On Arch

31. August 2025 - 06:58

Hello everyone 👋

I’m about to install Arch Linux on my school laptop, and I use a SteelSeries Arctis Nova 7 headset. The SteelSeries Sonar app on Windows provides me a wealth of functionality that I would love to replicate on Linux, but sadly, Sonar is not available on this operating system.

The main features I’m missing are:

A dashboard with distinct channel (Game, Chat, Media, Mic) for per-app volume customization and selective channel routing.

Virtual devices (mic + speaker per channel) for selective output routing.

EQ with presets (game optimized).

Surround / spatial audio available.

Centralized interface for managing the above.

What I’m looking for is a Sonar-style replacement on Linux. Is there someone who has managed to set up something similar to PipeWire and/or PulseAudio, or other auxiliary software? Or is there a more mature project that attempts to do this?

Thanks a lot 🙏 Any suggestions would be helpful and very encouraging.

Envision WMR Hp Reverb G2 Headset and Controller Problems. hlp.. plz.

31. August 2025 - 06:06

I set up Envision and the headset and controllers work but are absolute ass. The headset refresh rate is so bad my eyes are strained after 2 minutes in the headset, in the debug view of envision it says skipping frame for complete one and Im getting hundreds of these non-stop. As for the controllers, they are unusable and just dont work, they drift the spin and are a jittery mess and its just the tracking is super bad and the controllers move all over the place and dont work good. I dont know if I setup something wrong but I kinda need this to work, on windows 10 and 11 they wont detect my controllers and Im just done, at least on fedora kde they detected them. I tried the oasis driver on linux and windows 11 and on linux, nothing, on windows 11 the headset worked but the fucking controllers wouldnt pair! if you have any fixes please let me know.
