Steam stuck in Offline mode (Debian 13)

03. Januar 2026 - 11:33

I'm having issues with Steam lately.

It takes a very long time to load and then gets stuck in Offline mode. Can't download games, can't sync saves, can't load the store... It says I have no internet access while I clearly do.

What I tried so far :

- Using Ethernet over Wi-Fi,

- Deleting all the Steam related files and packages and reinstall everything (worked for like 2 days)

- Updating the system (everything's up to date already)

System information :

ThinkPad P14s Gen 5 AMD, Debian 13 Gnome (trixie, main, contrib, non-free, non-free-firmware)

Does anyone had this issue ?

KDE Multi-Monitor framerate Bug plaguing me for ages

03. Januar 2026 - 11:22

I have been plagued by this bug just way too long at this point. For some reason there seems to be a coherent bug (no matter if Nvidia(earlier) or Amd(now)) where for some reason the Display Server Protocol just mixes up something and only gives me less than a third gpu util. The only fix i have found for this issue is to just alt tab out and back in again, and sometimes it jumps back to >80% gpu util and sometimes it just stays low. Most notably are War Thunder and CS2 in that regard, which might have to do with their native builds, although me already running CS2 in wayland only mode for example.

Pc-specs:

  • RX 6950 XT
  • 5950X
  • KDE (Wayland) 6.5.4
  • Kernel: 6.17.12-300.fc43.x86_64
  • Fedora 43
  • 32 Gigs Ram

Displays:

  • FULL HD, 60hz (DP)
  • 1440p, 170hz (DP)
  • FULL HD, 144hz (DP)
  • 4k 60hz TV (Hdmi) (Disabled, only used in my Bazzite distro)

I also want to add that none of the components is thermal throttling and my main only lead or suspicion is a bug in wayland, but the more i look for similar issues the less i find about it :/

Maybe someone has a similar bug or already fixed it, would be lovely :)

Oh and no, using Gamescope for example does not fix it beforehand.

Sorry to bug again, Feels like can't really answer the question

03. Januar 2026 - 10:28

https://preview.redd.it/r5f3txjtr3bg1.png?width=620&format=png&auto=webp&s=f9b15834596d3ddddc2ea9bba2c0130282f3b5e8

You see, the limit is 162w. But no matter the game, it will now exceed 145w(which is the limit if amd overclocking is disabled). Same system in my fedora 2nd install show the correct powercap and also reaches upto 162w. But on arch (endeavour and cachy both) it can only reach upto 145 and then power throttles it(as seen in mangohud). Would appreciate any help to uncover underlying cause/issue

Asking for guidance

03. Januar 2026 - 08:35

Hi everyone, this is my first post on this community.

I have been using Linux for a long time on my laptops and work PC, but I have never used Linux for gaming on my main PC, which runs Windows 11. Recently, I have been experiencing system crashes, instability and all the other joys that Windows has to offer on this very PC.

Since I use Arch at work, I am intrigued by CachyOs and would like to try it out to see if it could solve my problems.

My configuration is as follows:

  • Ryzen 9 5900X
  • Asus-B50 XE
  • 32GB RAM (DDR4)
  • Asus TUF Radeon RX 7900XT
  • Samsung 960 EVO 500GB
  • and various non-NVMe drives.

Would you recommend using a dual boot system or going all-in on Linux?

How do I manage Asus peripherals and check the health of my drives on Linux? Is there an alternative to Adrenaline that allows me to adjust my graphics card settings (e.g. power, maximum FPS, etc.)?

I mainly play Arc Raiders and Helldivers 2 in multiplayer on Steam and Heroes of the Storm on Battlenet. I've seen that Arc Raiders is compatible with Steam Deck, so there shouldn't be any problems running it on Linux, but are Battlenet games supported?

Sorry for the barrage of questions, but I'm really keen to make the switch to Linux.

[Tech support] - Diablo 2 Resurrected & Warcraft 3 reforged issues

03. Januar 2026 - 07:48

Specs: https://imgur.com/5jtiBt5
The trouble:
-- Diablo 2 Resurrected, Will ABSOLUTELY get into actual gameplay (seeing the towns, move around) but https://imgur.com/a/bPkSpuu. OG graphics work fine, but I want the newer/fps ...
-- Warcraft 3: Reforged - Completely black graphics, no audio whatsoever, never see anything.

Using Lutris, and have to run battle net with proton 10, to even get into diablo, I've tried other protons/wine/ for warcraft and no change. I assume some GPU (mesa?) update borked both.

Metaphor: ReFantazio incredibly slow

03. Januar 2026 - 07:11

Out of nowhere, my FPS in Metaphor:ReFantazio has dropped from 120, to around 13. Attached is a screenshot of the issue.

I’m not really sure what to do next. I’ve tried re-installing the game, multiple versions of Proton (including GE, CachyOS, Experimental, Hotfix), rebooting the system multiple times, starting the game in both desktop mode and gaming mode…

I just want to try to play my favourite RPG this year. It was working fine up until now for several upon several hours and I have no idea what is causing it. This does not seem like a common issue as Google searches have also turned up nothing.

This issue does not seem to pop up with other games I have tested so far.

I am running Bazzite, with an AMD 9070XT and 5700X3D.

Trying to upgrade monster hunter wilds to fsr4 on pop os, beginner questions

03. Januar 2026 - 05:19

I am new to Linux and a while ago got a 9070 XT and was very comfortable using it on windows with access to fsr4. But now on Linux I haven’t figured out how to get fsr4 to work. I am using pop os and have mesa 25.1.5 and no idea how to update it since I have heard mesa 25.2 has some built in fsr4 stuff but I’m not too sure what that’s about. I’ve so far tried everything from Optiscaler to manually updating the fsr dlls to just adding things into the launch arguments and updating to the latest version of proton (idk if using proton ge will help in any way but if so do tell me). I’m at a complete loss for how to continue and how to get fsr4 to work on Linux and would really appreciate some help because everywhere else I look either is for a different os or mentions 5 different things as assumed knowledge I have never heard of before as a Linux noob. So any help here would be much appreciated

g29 wheel turns too many rotations for supertuxKart

03. Januar 2026 - 05:01

Just what the title says basically, but i'll explain. Having to rotate the wheel a full 360 degrees or more to do a hard turn makes the game not as fun as just using the arrows on the keyboard, also makes it easy to lose track of the buttons that i've set to do different funtions. how can i set it to do a full turn at like 90 degrees of turn, maybe 135 degrees max?
i tried using jstest-gtk and calibrating by only turning the wheel 90 degrees but that had no effect. affect?

CachyOS vs Windows 11 for Low End Laptop

03. Januar 2026 - 03:57

I have a laptop im just screwing around with, 4gb of ram, Jasperlake UHD intel graphics and 128gbs of storage. Im just trying to make this as fast as possible performance wise.

Have you guys found any difference between in the two in consistent performance? which was generally better?

Is cachy OS better for running games on low end hardware basically, or does it not really matter?

Is ryzenadj good for heat managment in laptops?

03. Januar 2026 - 01:49

Hi everyone,

I am currently running ubuntu with thin 14' acer ( 7840u cpu, igpu 780m, 16gb ram ).
I didnt have much troubles on windows as it came with windows 10 and it worked right out of box. With laptop stand, air would flow in properly and it never went beyond 80c temperature while gaming.

When I switched to linux I had trouble with temperatures over 100c and shut downs. After a lot of investigations and trying out everything I could, I ended up using ryzenadj to make a gaming script which basically set up my tdp to 25w. It gave me more fps than windows and it stabilized my temperatures to around 70-75c.

Now if I got this right, it means I basically told my laptop to use fixed ammount of power instead of jumping around, I've also set my up max temperature do never go beyond 80c. Is that a good setup that will force fans to spin faster when needed and to deliver optimal power when gaming?

So far this has been the only thing to allow me to game and to keep temperatures low and fps high, just not sure is that a proper method for linux, ryzen cpu/iGpu and thing laptops that don't have any access to fans in bios.

Proton > Native Linux?

03. Januar 2026 - 01:49

New Linux user here. I am using Pop_OS LTS 24.04. Nvidia 50 series GPU, AM5 CPU. Also of note, monitor is 32:9 super ultrawide. I have been testing games that I thought would run excellent natively: Half Life 2, Black Mesa. HL2 has a wildly distorted FOV, BM won't launch at all, and Alien Isolation will only run in a small corner of my screen and half of it is obscured.

The thing is, these all run flawlessly when I force Proton Experimental.

Is this common? Is it just user error? Is it the new OS and typical bugs? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Swapping AMD GPUs on Linux: Driver Reinstall Needed?

03. Januar 2026 - 01:32

Is it easy to swap AMD GPUs between different generations on Linux? I have a Southern Islands card and a Polaris card, and I want to swap them between two devices.

Based on my experience with Windows, you usually need to use DDU before changing GPUs. How does this work on Linux? What’s the concept behind it, and what’s your experience if you’ve done this before?

All COD games prior to BO2 have unplayable mouse jitter/"acceleration" (CachyOS KDE Plasma)

03. Januar 2026 - 01:14

I'm stumped after trying to get Cod4, BO1, MW3 (plutonium), and other og COD games to work. I have tried everything possible I feel like and I have a feeling this is gonna be my first MAJOR clash with Linux being that I really enjoy og COD and playing zombies and with bots in offline Plutonium servers, etc. My friends want to play BO1 zombies but I have to tell them no because my mouse issue. My mouse works flawlessly on every single game I've tried be it emulators, Proton, native Linux, etc... it's only these older COD games that have issues.

So the cursor works fine in menus but as soon as I load into a game my camera has two issues:

  1. Weird acceleration that feels like my mouse is on ice, not normal acceleration
  2. Mouse jitters making the game look 15fps (despite being smooth when walking only)

Things I have tried to fix this:

  • Change com_maxfps (I have done 60fps, 120fps, 170fps, 240fps, unlocked... feels better the higher the fps around 500fps or so, but still unplayable.)
  • Enable/disable VSYNC.
  • Various Steam launch commands I find complaining about performance.
  • Plutonium in Lutris and tried disabling FSYNC/ESYNC.
  • Using different Proton versions (Experimental, 9, 8, 7, and GE).
  • Ensuring no acceleration is enabled in any .cfg file or in the command console, tested with also.
  • Ensuring raw input is enabled in any .cfg file or the command console, tested without also.
  • Used smooth mouse option in-game which *helps* the jitter but not fully, nor does it fix acceleration.
  • Disabling acceleration in CachyOS mouse options (feels better that way regardless).
  • Changing graphic settings all of them individually/simultaneously.
  • Changing DPI and sensitivity settings to everything I can think of including 800 DPI and 5000 DPI.
  • Changing mouse polling rate to 125Hz, 250Hz, etc via Piper.
  • Plug mouse into USB 2.0 instead of 3.0 (using MB ports).
  • Use mouse with controller plugged in.

These mouse issues occur on any fresh install. I am tired. I own every COD up to BO3 along with all DLC and I literally cannot play them aside from WaW/BO2/BO3 solely due to my camera being messed up. That's it. No other complaints about performance or anything else (BO1 is really the only game with fps issues in some DLC which Proton GE fixes anyways). Controller for some reason works perfectly fine for supported games (and Plutonium ofc) but I don't want to use a controller.

If anyone can help or knows what's wrong please I beg for any help at all. I have wasted the better part of 5 days now in my free time to get these games working which yes, work perfectly fine on Windows 10 and 11 (which are on a separate drive I have uninstalled rn as I plan to stay on Linux). Thanks for your time and I appreciate any help or suggestions.

Specs: RTX 3070 Ti (tried 580 and new 590 drivers), Ryzen 5 5600x, 32GB DDR4 3600Mhz, plenty of SSD/HDD space, 170Hz 1440p display, CachyOS KDE Plasma 6.5.4, using G502 Hero Mouse.
