W Linux

06. Mai 2026 - 21:02

I installed Linux Mint a week ago on a drive I wasn’t using to dual boot as lifelong windows user, the OS is very snappy, easy to use and configure, I love where I have it so far. I even have a custom grub bootloader skin, I had to use the terminal a bit to get some things working out the box (AirPods 4 dual boot pairing, Tailscale, samba, rdp) but it was a lot easier than I thought, being used to cmd and powershell, and I got everything up and running how I’d use it in Windows, minus some small tools like gpuz or Logitech mouse configuration software

I got my Minecraft Java/mods and configs up and running with no problem, even though my PC isn’t bad where it’s at (32GB DDR4, 5600, 3080) I was pleased to find that not only does it run noticeably faster on Mint, but it also runs faster with shaders too, chunks loads faster, is generally just way more responsive than it ever is on Windows. I have no need to keep Minecraft on on windows anymore, and I’ll probably be slowly migrating things to Linux exclusively over time. I’m still tethered to windows because my creative work flow is still engrained in windows filesystem for FL Studio + vst3 directories, and they have better out of the box support and run faster on bare metal windows, but if things keep going where they are I’m totally okay with ditching windows entirely as I’m not attached to it. The whole OS, with a game open, and several tabs in the background takes 7GB of ram, where windows easily would’ve been double that 😭

Sonic World DX - Crashing with "Memory Access Violation" after beating a level and trying to return to main menu.

06. Mai 2026 - 20:35

Okay, so this is going to require context.

Recently, I became interested in the fan game "Sonic World DX". It's a Sonic fan game developed in the "Blitz3D" engine.

When I first downloaded it, it kept giving me a memory access violation just when opening it. Then I found out that on both Windows and Linux, the game requires dgVoodoo 2 to function properly on AMD GPU systems due to the necessary driver functions being deprecated. (I'm very thankful that PCGamingWiki has the latest Linux-compatible version of dgVoodoo2 archived. Because the official downloads of those versions were taken down, and apparently the creator of dgVoodoo 2 is pretty anti-Linux)

Anyway, so I got that set up, and the game launched fine through Proton after being added as a non-Steam game.

But now, whenever I complete a level and attempt to go back to the main menu, 100% of the time, it gives me a memory access violation error. It doesn't seem to give me any real information regarding it, so I'm kind of left in the dark.

Now, I realize it's pretty far-fetched that I'm going to get an answer here, as I'm asking about an obscure Sonic fan game that needs to be run with dgVoodoo 2 of all things, but crazier things have happened, so I figured it's worth a shot, right?

I did actually try to solve the issue with ChatGPT's guidance (yes, yes, I know: "Ew, AI" but it's actually been pretty useful with various in-game problems like this with other things) but it became clear to me that it started running around in circles after the first few fix attempts, so I don't think I'm going to get anywhere new with that.

Anyway, sorry for the wall of text. I'll post my specs now.

OS: Debian 13 KDE

GPU: RX6600

CPU: i7-1700 @4.9GHz

RAM: 16GB

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.

Help with Reloaded-II (Persona 3 Reload, game not opening)

06. Mai 2026 - 20:10

For some days I've been trying to mod Persona 3 Reload via Reloaded-II mod manager. By using the official documentation from the developer, I installed an Reloaded-II instance for P3R via Protontricks, and I installed Visual C++ and .NET SDK 9.0 on my game's prefix. I've also deployed the ASI Loader into my game's folder and put this command under launch options: WINEDLLOVERRIDES="winmm=n,b" %command%. I am also using Proton-GE, since the recommended version of Proton of Valve doesn't install the required dependencies for me, at least.

However, when I click play, nothing happens. Steam says that the game is running but no window pops up. I've tried another guide (https://gamebanana.com/tuts/17166) but didn't work to me as well, as it says that the Steam API could not be found.

Additionally, other Persona games are working just fine.

Has anyone got these problems as well? I think I've runned out of options here. Thanks in advance.

New to Linux, need help picking a distro for my gaming laptop

06. Mai 2026 - 19:59

Hey r/linux_gaming,

I recently got an ASUS ROG Strix G18 (Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX, RTX 5070 Ti 12GB, 32GB DDR5) and I want to set up Linux alongside Windows 11.

I've used Linux before on a desktop (EndeavourOS, Pop!_OS, Manjaro) but always ran into driver issues — audio bugs, peripheral problems, general instability. That machine had an AMD GPU so things were simpler. Now I have an Nvidia card which I know can be tricky.

My goals:

Gaming (Steam, Heroic for Epic/GOG)

Daily driving (browser, Discord/Vesktop, Spotify, OBS)

Learning — eventually want to get into Docker, sysadmin stuff

Cool desktop customization (interested in Hyprland / tiling WMs)

My concerns:

RTX 5070 Ti support — is it even stable yet on Linux?

Wayland vs X11 with Nvidia on a new card

Which distro base handles this best right now? Arch, Fedora, something else?

I've heard CachyOS gets mentioned for gaming laptops. Is that a good call or overkill/unstable for a daily driver?

Any experience with this gen of hardware appreciated 🙏

Are Ubisoft games playable?

06. Mai 2026 - 19:12

I use CachyOS. I’m huge fan of Ubisoft games and I just hate lutris - had so many issues with it in Bazzite.

Can I just buy one on Steam and play?

Is Windows still the King of Gaming or has linux caught up? This is my 2 cents

06. Mai 2026 - 18:20

As someone who have gamed in both windows and linux, I have to say linux gaming has improved alot.

I was on cachy os and Nobara and Fedora and all the games work perfectly with tge protons. However anti cheat games and EA games still have issues and some emulation services like google play for PC for example the recent pc game and mobile game NTE which was recently released doesn't support Linux system. And its not in steam currently.

Yes there are bottles to run the windows games and apps but they are not native. And performance isn't really great.

Therefore all in all, Windows is still the default for gaming, no tinkering neeeded, no hassle, its plug and play. However linux will become the next default for gaming in the next 5 yrs or so once the whole anti cheat thing get sorted out and more developers supporting linux.

How can i play sourcemods on linux? (cachyos)

06. Mai 2026 - 17:23

I've been trying to run sourcemods on linux and never really thought to ask until now. I have hl2 set to the pre-anniversary release and on hotfix, source sdk 2007 and 2013 set to hotfix, both of the hl2 episodes set to hotfix and my mod set to hotfix but even then, when i boot it up, I get a message saying that gameinfo.txt cant be found in the mod's folder.

I tried deleting gameinfo.txt which led to the mod losing its icon and changing its title in my library, so it is reading gameinfo.txt, but even after trying with another mod the same issue pops up. I'm really at my wits end now, I've tried linking the mod's folder to steamapps, steamapps/common and even tried linking gameinfo.txt to those places, but it still can't read it.

From what I've been able to find, this problem seems pretty niche and none of the videos i can find on youtube really cover it. Has anyone solved this before?

EA App games failing to launch in Gaming Mode but work fine on desktop

06. Mai 2026 - 17:04

Running Bazzite on a PC setup as a living room gaming machine (bazzite-deck:stable, Proton Experimental 20260428). NFS Heat and Burnout Paradise both stopped working in Gaming Mode at some point -- I can't pin down exactly when but they were definitely working before.

What happens: launch the game from Gaming Mode, EA app opens fine, then throws a "game failed to launch" error. If you try to relaunch from within the EA app it says the game is already running. Switch to desktop mode and launch from Steam and both games work perfectly.

I've tried pretty much everything:

- Proton Experimental, GE 10-34, Proton 10, Proton 11 Beta

- Wiping and rebuilding the prefix fresh

- vcrun2022 via protontricks

- Every launch option combo I could find (PROTON_NO_ESYNC, PROTON_NO_FSYNC, WINEDLLOVERRIDES, EALaunchEAApp=0, SteamDeck=0)

- ujust fix-reset-steam

- OS rollback to an older Bazzite build

- Restored a working prefix from my Steam Deck where the games still launch fine in Gaming Mode -- same result on the PC

The Proton log shows the launch going through the `link2ea://` URI handler and then a COM marshal error and a fork-without-exec at termination, which suggests the EA app is receiving the launch but can't spawn the game process inside gamescope.

Building a fresh prefix from a Gaming Mode launch then immediately switching to desktop and launching works first try every time, so it's definitely something specific to the gamescope environment.

Anyone hit this recently or found a fix? Considering trying the EA app as a non-Steam shortcut to bypass the link2ea handoff entirely but not sure if that's worth the hassle.

Switched to Arch and it is miles better than Windows.

06. Mai 2026 - 14:59

Long time user of Windows, both professionally and for gaming. Always defaulted to using Windows because it was the most convenient for my productivity needs and games "just worked."

Over time, I became really tired of Microsoft's bullshit. I still have to use it at work but the sluggish performance, ad spam, lack of customization, and ridiculous update frequency drove me insane -- to the point that I didn't even really want to play games anymore because using the OS was too annoying.

I have an IT/software dev background so I looked into distros that would suit my needs and stumbled upon Arch. The install process didn't look that intimidating - just a sequence of commands, basically - so I gave it a whirl on my main machine. Proceeded to instantly love the performance and spent hours customizing KDE before I even touched Steam.

Big ups to everyone on this subreddit for their guides and recommendations. Even if Windows miraculously improves, which it probably won't, I have no reason to ever go back. Arch is by far the best experience I've had with a desktop OS ever.

Logitech G29 Stuck in PS4 mode (CachyOS)

06. Mai 2026 - 14:49

Basically title of post. I'm trying to use my pedal and wheel on linux for le mans ultimate. The pro pedals work fine, are registered and are fine. However the G29, when I do lsusb shows up as PS4. The switch at the top is on PS3 and click into position.

I installed jstest-gtk, the steering doesn't work, the + and -, rotary dial and button inside of rotary doesn't show up. Also the d-pad shows up as an axis switch. I also downloaded oversteer and it just says no device available (guessing because in lsusb it says PS4). I also installed new-lg4ff-dkms-git per the arch logitech racing wheel wiki post.

I'm comfortable opening up the wheel if there is something that I can do to force it to PS3 mode or something in windows I can do to force it to PS3?

While attempting to use a tool called d4m, which allows you to install game mods for Hatsune Miku Project Diva on linux, I get this error Could not find the program "'/usr/bin/steam-runtime'"

06. Mai 2026 - 14:11

The error is "Could not find the program '/usr/bin/steam-runtime'" i put the quotes in the wrong spot.

The d4m program itself is getting close to 4 years old now without any updates since 2022, so I am wondering if the way steam names its files could have just changed since the last update?

Both programs are natively installed neither are the flatpak version of the package so it cant be an issue with one running in a container either.

I am running d4m 0.3.3 and steam was just updated today.

I am running arch Linux, and everything is up to date as well. I just updated an hour ago.

Anyone know how to fix this? If not does anyone know an alternative to d4m?

Is Discord just terrible on Linux?

06. Mai 2026 - 13:38

Hey all, recently I swapped to bazzite and Discord just feels terrible to use on here, vesktop works but I can't screenshare my entire screen without them hearing themselves, I try the official discord client and it crashes after screensharing my screen every 30 minutes, it's all sorta frustrating.
