Gamescope Crashing When Running Baulder's Gate 3

17. Juni 2024 - 16:57

Hello,

My Host OS and Hardware:

Proxmox 8.1.4
Motherboard - Asrock Rack Rome8d-2t
CPU - Epyc 7443p
RAM - 256GB 3200MHZ ECC
GPU1 - Asus TUF RTX-4070ti Super, PCIe7
GPU2 - Sapphire Pulse 7900 XTX, PCIe1
OS Drive - Samsung 980 Pro 500GB
VM OS Drives - ZFS Mirror 2x960GB Samsung P9A3, Oculink 1/2
VM Storage - ZFS Striped Mirror 4x1TB WD SN850, bifurcation card PCIe5
TrueNAS Drives - 4x12TB Seagate x16, SATA 4-7
PCIe NIC - 82599ES 10Gbe - passed through to TrueNAS, PCIe4

Guest OS:

EndeavourOS

Kernel: 6.9

DE: KDE Plasma 6.0, using Wayland

Gamescope: 6.14.16-1

VRR: I believe EndeavourOS has it enabled automatically.

Issue:

I am experiencing regular crashing in BG3 when using Gamescope. I have tried with both Nvidia and AMD GPUs and it happens to both. I have two copies of the EndeavourOS VM, one for Nvidia and one for AMD, so I can use each GPU freely without having to remove/re-install drivers. Gamescope will run for about 30 minutes and then close. I run Gamescope using Steam commands to launch the game and they are below.

gamescope -e -f -w 3840 h 2160 --hdr-enabled --hdr-debug-force-output --force-grab-curosr --hdr-sdr-content-nits 600 -- %command%

It's also worth noting that it happens with and without HDR enabled. The exact same method and commands work well with The Last of Us. It will run that game for hours without crashing.

Does anyone have suggestions or anything they can point me to to help troubleshoot?

Helldivers 2 Latest Patch Broken

17. Juni 2024 - 16:53

Curious if anyone here has gotten helldivers 2 to run on the latest patch 1.000.400?

I see a lot of reports on protondb that it doesn’t work, but a couple saying they’ve gotten it to work.

Wondering if anyone has taken any effective action to unbreak it for them.

I can stream games from my PC to my Steam Deck on X, but not Wayland.

17. Juni 2024 - 16:13

I have tried steam with the -pipewire flag and it didn't change anything. I'm on an AMD GPU. Does anyone have other suggestions?

7900xtx zero rpm

17. Juni 2024 - 15:41

was on windows 11.used amd software to disable zero rpm. worked. installed fedora workstation. thought there's amd software to disable zero ram. but only drivers exist no amd software.didnt install driver. found corectl. installed. found a setting "fan start". played around with it. still can't disable zero ram. installed amd driver. "fan start" setting disappeared. still zero rpm. fucked around with grub configs. did some terminal shots. pwm1enable, amdgpu grub setting config things. no go. went back to windows 11. I really want linux to work but there's always something that goes sideways. I had 2080 ti. monitor issues on linux too. i have 3 main monitors and 1 small one. refresh rate difference. tried to fix it. used difference OSes, DE all that. didn't do anything terminal heavy though like xrand stuff. Just wanted it to work without doing terminal heavy stuff. if I wanted to do that, I'd just do a server. actually...maybe I can do that instead. I'll post a reply after this if all else fails.

i thought switching to amd would work. it somewhat worked. multiple monitors have no issues until zero rpm. didnt know there was a zero rpm feature. so what I wanted to ask, is there something I missed regarding disabling it? or is this a kernel patch or update thing for newer gpu?

thanks

Team Fortress 2 is only functional 10% of the time for me, can anybody tell me whats wrong?

17. Juni 2024 - 15:27

Whenever I open Tf2 45% of the time it freezes on startup another 45% of the time it starts with no audio and i can't get the audio to start working without a restart and the Final 10% of the time it works flawlessly. Does anyone know what could be causing this or what i can do to fix it?

Small piece of additional information. whenever the game boots but with no audio the in game disconnect button in the top right corner doesn't work and instead just freezes the game, This does not happen when the audio is functioning.

The numbers i gave of 45/45/10 are not estimates I actually tested and these were the percentages of each outcome.

list of things I have tried,

Using proton (Linux Runtime Sniper is the only compatibility tool that opens the game in secure mode for me),

Switching from x64 Vulcan to Legacy Open GL

Messing with pipewire and none of these worked.

If it matters I do use a script for engineer buildings but this was an issue before i started using them.

Steam OS as a Distro?

17. Juni 2024 - 15:10

I heard they're making a full on Distro for PC and gaming. I would really like to check it out. Yes there's already alternatives that I could try but I really wanna try Steam's take on Linux PC, especially if I can download all my apps like other distros.

How do I set up OpenGL as my renderer in War Thunder via steam

17. Juni 2024 - 14:48

So the question is in the title, I tried using stuff like -force-glcore in steam, when turning on War Thunder steam tells me it is processing vulcan shaders, and I am unable to change them to OpenGL in manual game update as the only option is auto, I am not using protons. All and any help will be appreciated

DLSS not available on The Witcher 3

17. Juni 2024 - 14:29

Hi, I'm playing the GOG version of The Witcher 3 on a system with a GeForce RTX 4070 through the Heroic Games Launcher. I'm starting the game via the DirectX 12 option. In the settings I switched to Proton Experimental and I have set the following environment variables:

  • PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1
  • PROTON_HIDE_NVIDIA_GPU=0
  • VKD3D_CONFIG=dxr,dxr11

and the following wrapper commands:

  • gamemoderun
  • mangohud

And yet, when I run the game, go to the graphics settings and try to switch DLSS on it tells me it's not supported.

I'm using Arch Linux with version 550.90.07-2 of the Nvidia drivers.

Which ADM RX 7700XT do you recommend?

17. Juni 2024 - 13:38

Hi,

I currently own a GIGABYTE Radeon RX 7700 XT Gaming OC which I intend to rma since I have experienced varius driver/card issues. My idea was that I want to get a refund instead of a new card so that I can buy a new card from a different vendor which has less issues.

So my question is: which card from which vendor do you recommend because you had no issues (like crashes) with it?

I previously owned a RX 5700XT from powercolor which had similar issues (at least I could fix them by adjusting the voltage).

Alan wake 2 issues with start up and fps

17. Juni 2024 - 13:22

Hey guys,

So been trying to play Alan Wake 2 on Linux, I did know this was going to be a bit of challenge from what I read but need some advice now.

So currently running a 2060 12gb card with a i5 10400f and 32gb ram on Linux mint (running the recommended driver for my card) I am running Alan wake 2 through heroic launcher on a 1080p 144hz monitor with a dualsense connected via cable.

I am experiencing stutters throughout when I did get control of Alan after playing sage it did get better for a bit but then came back. I'm finding I will hit a splid 60-70ish at the most and randomly hit down to 30-40 this is on low (for textures and stuff) and medium settings and using dlss at balanced.

Now i don't personally mind running at 30-40 fps I just wanna enjoy the game so tried to limit my fps but no method seems to work. I've tried Mango, Strangle, Gamescope (which wouldn't let the game even launch kn heroic), did try lutris but game doesn't want to launch either on that. And with the Nvidia settings I can only change my fps on both screens to 50hz at the lowest.

I could be being too extreme with wanting to limit my fps maybe there is a fix for the stuttering but I'm not sure honestly any help would be greatly appreciated. If it comes down to it I will deal with the stutters stories got me hooked so far so that'll keep me going :)

Squad fixed DT_HASH issue

17. Juni 2024 - 13:08

With the new v8.0 update, Squad has finally fixed a long standing issue on Linux. They updated EAC linux module, which currently works without needing DT_HASH patch, on stock Arch Linux.

It works flawlessly with Proton 9.0, in fact better than Windows. As in Windows you can't change your audio device in game without restarting.

PSA: Avoid HoyoPlay launcher blackscreen by installing webview2

17. Juni 2024 - 12:58

I had to reinstall Genshin Impact with the new HoyoPlay launcher as the "old" one is not available anymore. After installation the launcher stayed black and was completely unresponsive.

With some testing in Bottles and in native wine i found webview2 is now a needed dependency. So I'd recommend to install webview2 before installing the launcher.

I don't use Lutris or alike's so i can't tell if they face the same problem.

Can't Login to Apex Legends after Reinstall

17. Juni 2024 - 12:46

Hello! I've searched the internet far and wide and haven't found anyone with a similar problem yet, at least on Linux.

Recently, i've reinstalled Apex Legends but i've encountered a bug where i can't log in to my EA account since the steam overlay refuses to open, with the game itself saying that i need to have steam overlay enabled which i do.

What is more curious is that the steam overlay will open on the EAC loading screen which comes up before the actual game starts.

Here are my launch options: MANGOHUD=1 gamemoderun DXVK_ASYNC=1 %command% -novid -high +fps_max 75

I run Ubuntu 13.10

use a Ryzen 5 5600 and a GTX 1050Ti

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Which of you as DesktopUser has permanently abandoned dual boot to a Linux only system?

17. Juni 2024 - 12:36

What made you stick exclusively with Linux on your desktop?

Do you find the same gaming features again, or do you miss something you can't have on Linux that you had before with the Microsoft operating system?

Do you miss your "old" Windows?

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 | Steam Deck (OLED) Performance Test | Low vs Med. vs High vs Ultra

17. Juni 2024 - 11:40

I compare the performance of various presets on the Steam Deck OLED for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020.

I was very impressed with the Low settings. The game is very playable with this preset and looks stunning at times. Of course, it doesn’t look as good as on higher settings. But if you only have a Steam Deck to play on, you can definitely enjoy this game with the Low preset.

I don't think any of the other presets are really playable on the Steam Deck.

On Low settings, you get about 25-50 FPS (depending on the location), on Medium 14-23 FPS, on High 11-16 FPS, and on Ultra 7-11 FPS (all tested in New York).

What do you think? Did anyone else play Flight Simulator on the Steam Deck? And with what graphical settings?

If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Is DRM ineffective?

17. Juni 2024 - 11:33

I've been thinking for a while about DRM and its effectiveness on preventing piracy and cheats. I know that the use and existence of DRM itself is a controversial topic with differing opinions but one thing that's objective is research and statistics.

I've seen other users say "research has shown that DRM doesn't do anything against piracy" or "its implementation has actually INCREASED the amount of piracy." however I can't find any of these papers they're talking about. If anyone could link a couple, that'd be good, and also explain why this phenomena occurs will be helpful as well. Thanks.

How to Gently Resuscitate Your Computer When Video Freezes

17. Juni 2024 - 07:47

Hey all, I just realized that no tutorial in the Linux gaming world explain how to restore your system properly when your game freezes, maybe because of GPU issues.

This is something that happens fairly often while tkintering or while just trying to calibrate the video quality for a certain game. Most of people will turn off the computer abruptly, but this may have several bad consequences, especially on filesystems.

How can we try to turn the computer off while the video is not responding at all?

The answer is simple: most of the distro a will enable some of the SysRq commands. However, not all of them will enable the commands that you'll really need.

My advice is to open /etc/sysctl.conf or /etc/sysctl.conf.d/10-magic-sysrq.conf and append the following line:

kernel.sysrq=1

This line will enable all the magic sysrq commands.

Reboot your computer.

Now, you have to find out your sysrq key. In most of the computers, this will be the "Print Screen" key, or in alternative the "F13" key. To check it out, try pressing "Alt+print+e". You should be logged out (if your distro is using systemd). Other possible sysrq keys for your computer are listed here

Now you have all you need. When your game freezes, press "Alt+print" and while keeping down both the keys, press the following sequence slowly, stopping whenever the system becomes reusable. In some computers , you may need to release The Print key while keeping the Alt key pressed.

The magic sequence that you need to remember is:

rfeisub

.

What it does?

  1. Set keyboard into raw mode
  2. Invoke the oom-killer to kill memory angry processes
  3. Send stop signal to all processes
  4. Send kill signal to all processes
  5. Sync filesystems
  6. Unmount filesystems and try to remount them read-only
  7. Force reboot

Each key is a step towards turning off the computer, so if you can get it back at work before of reaching the end of the sequence, you can then turn it off with usual methods. If you reach point 6 (u) you'll have no other choice than reboot the system to make it work properly again.
