My experience over the last week installing various distros with a Nvidia GPU

03. Juli 2025 - 17:31

I was curious how Linux is for gaming so I thought I'd give it a shot. I actually started with Pop OS on my Surface 3 Pro (very old) just to see what it was like. It improved performance significantly. So I went ahead and installed it on my main PC and "it just worked." It installed properly, installing the nvidia driver was super easy. I was really enjoying it but there were some things that were annoying. The POP OS Store always runs an update check when you open it which I was doing constantly. It was also slow and laggy with searches and found myself using apt searches to find stuff. Later I found out there is the Cosmic store which fixes all this. Also I was having random lock ups which sometimes would be for a short while or would require a reboot. Gaming I only tested a few things. I ran Unreal Tournament 99 in Heroic Launcher and was shocked how easy it was to add a game exe and just start playing. I also tried Doom 2016 which ran great. It was a bit clunky to get going as it had to do a ton of downloads then didn't launch. Quick check on Protondb and I saw I had to change the version which is easy to do under Steam's game properties with a drop down menu.

However the naggling issues caused me to look elsewhere. I was lured in by a graybeard in a youtube video to try Open Suse. Well I was lured by his video and some reddit threads, the gecko looked cool too. I tried it and ended up with a black screen after installing the OS. I later learned this was most likely because of the Nvidia driver or lack thereof.

So it was on the distro #3. I was going back and forth between Bazzite and Cachy and went with Cachy. I followed a youtube video to go through the install and ended up again with a black screen after installing the OS. I tried searching around and saw it was most likely the Nvidia driver. So I went through the installer again, chose grub instead of the default option, and stuck with default selections and this time I was able to boot into the OS! I ran the meta command and was on my way. Gaming worked just as well as in Pop OS. I was able to connect my xbox one controller wired but not wirelessly but I think thats because its paired on the windows side. I don't have any random lockups yet. The gui for the repo in Cachy is Octopi which is a bit clunky but works. So far so good. I might stick with Cachy for a bit and do some actual gaming now.

I will say that people saying you don't need to use the terminal are incorrect. You don't need it until something goes wrong and then you do. For example both distros muted my audio at the hardware level. I use a Pyle mixer connected over USB for my audio. I had to learn about the Linux audio stack and drill down through the layers until I learned about the alsamixer command. It was here I was able to choose my audio device and saw the volume was either muted or too low and turned it up. The GUI sound controls do not control audio at this level so it must be done via the terminal.

I am trying to make a desktop shortcut to work with WINE where I can add command lines to the launch options like in properties for shortcuts in Windows.

03. Juli 2025 - 16:29

I need to do this to run some mods for Doom. I'd like a GUI program for this, but it seems it might not exist. I have a good bit of mods and really want an easy way to do this. I'm using Linux Mint Cinnamon.

Assetto Corsa fails to launch due to Wine application uninstaller

03. Juli 2025 - 16:14

Hi, I switched from Ubuntu to Arch some days ago and I'm trying to install Assetto Corsa. To make AC run in Ubuntu, since it doesn't work with the "normal" Proton, I installed a GE-Proton version from ProtonUp and everything worked just fine.

Before doing this on Arch i searched online a way to install AC on Arch and I found this post which says that in arch you just need to install the AUR package of Proton GE, then follow the instruction and everything should work. Guess? It doesn't work (for me): I get this message

https://preview.redd.it/pxlk5qovinaf1.png?width=804&format=png&auto=webp&s=b71dc7e7acd508585b6f8af417ca2072172509d0

I searched online for this error but didn't find anything. The steam process logs this:

I tried installing protonfixes from AUR but I get

error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files) protonfixes: /home/davide/Documents/protonfixes/src/protonfixes-1.0.15/static/index.html exists in filesystem Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded. ==> WARNING: Failed to install built package(s).

so I moved over to the next warning (I ignored ERROR: ld.so: object '/home/davide/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/gameoverlayrenderer.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded (wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32): ignored. since this occurs also in other games but they works) about WINEPREFIX, I followed the instruction of the wiki to start the 32 bit environment but the command WINEARCH=win32 winecfg gives me

wine: WINEARCH is set to 'win32' but this is not supported in wow64 mode.

and all I found online says that it's just not supported anymore and there is nothing to do.

So i found this other post, followed the instructions but when i tried to launch it, it just stops. The last thing I tried is downloading ProtonUp to get GE-Proton, I installed GE-Proton10-8 and still doesn't work, but now this time the output is so long that I don't think it makes sense just to paste it here.

I have no idea what to do more now, what suggestions do you have?

Random soft lock during games, mouse can be moved

03. Juli 2025 - 16:13

Hey everyone,

I recently moved to Linux Mint from Windows and I’m thinking about switching all of my computers to Linux eventually. As a test, I installed Linux on my old gaming laptop a Lenovo Ideapad Y700ISK (17-inch).

I’m having some random negative experiences with games, mostly involving soft locks. Sometimes when a soft lock occurs, I can fix it by pressing alt+tab. Other times, if I hold alt+tab, I can see the game continues to run in the background, but as soon as I release the keys to return to the game, it soft locks again.

One of the most frustrating parts is that sometimes during the soft lock, my keyboard stops working entirely, even though I can still move the mouse. When that happens, I can’t alt+tab or launch the system monitor, so I’m forced to hard-reboot the computer.

I’ve tried searching online and even asked ChatGPT, but I still can’t figure it out. I’ve also tested different Proton versions without success.

This issue won’t stop me from using Linux, but I really want to find a solution since the same game sometimes runs perfectly fine, and other times causes these soft locks.

Gamepad button remaping

03. Juli 2025 - 14:33

So i have an xbox 360 controller and the dpad works as an axis (tested using jstest /dev/input/js0), because of that dpad doesnt work in games or in steam big picture.

I can remap it using steam input but that only works for games that i have on steam.

How can i change dpad mapping system wide?

Best Controller for Linux Gaming

03. Juli 2025 - 13:19

Hey everyone,

I've been using XBOX controllers for years now and switched to an elite 2 about a year ago.
However, ever since switching to Linux I've been having tons of issues with the bluetooth connectivity.

I also own an 8BitDo Sn30 Pro and that one works perfectly fine with bluetooth.

Now I've been thinking about switching to another controller that works great on Linux without having to tinker around with.

I've been looking at the 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless, but I've heard that it has it's quirks here and there too.

Any opinions?

TLOU2 unplayable (1 FPS when loading a save)

03. Juli 2025 - 13:14

So, I started playing The Last Of Us Part 2 for the first time on Windows, but before I could finish it I switched to CachyOS completely. Now I can't play it because once I load a save, the game renders at 1 FPS with almost no usage on the CPU and GPU (on the menu it runs as on WIndows).

I started tinkering with different protons, forcing the dGPU to run the program, forcing the game to open on a X11 window (found a person with the same problem as me on protonDB saying that it fixed the problem). I spent two days researching and even asking ChatGPT (thought it did helped me with some things).

I have already given up and posted a report on protonDB, but since I want to play it so bad and I couldn't get any help from r/cachyos, you are my last resort.

Any help is welcome.

PC specs (Acer Nitro 5 AN515-47) :

Kernel: 6.15.4-3-cachyos

CPU: Ryzen 5 7535HS

GPU: Radeon 660M and RTX 3050 ti (4GB)

RAM: 16 GB

Drivers: 575.64

Stuck with proton on steam, no way to disable Steam Play

03. Juli 2025 - 13:07

This is a weird issue. I need to install some native linux games on steam and I no longer have the choice.

In the individual games compatibility settings same issue: on the list of choices the native linux runtime is gone.
It happens with the beta too.
