Best Wifi drivers for gaming

12. Juni 2024 - 00:56

Hello everyone, so I use a Archer T4U Plus (rtl8812au). I have been trying to play Survivalist: The Invisble Strain with my dad. I can play other games but this one just won't load up properly and the one time I was able to load into his game I continuously got out of sync errors (it uses peer to peer) So I know it's a wifi driver issue. I'm curious for anybody who uses this same type of wifi stick (that uses the same chip) what driver you use for gaming. As I do have an issue or 2 with some other games when I try to play (Namely Company of Heroes 2) When I used to use windows, the driver was just fine, without any out of sync issues. However, When I decided to change to Linux, games that used to work perfect on the online (they were are rated between gold and platinum on ProtonDB btw) would start to have issues. Before you ask on the Company of Heroes 2 part. Yes, I did add the multiplayer patch.

This is what loads when I try to join the game.

These are the specifications of the computer.

Edit: ProtonDB gives the game a Platinum rating.

Edit 2: added more context

Steam creating nameless windows for notifications

11. Juni 2024 - 23:40

Does anyone have any idea why steam is doing this?

It's actually starting to drive me up the wall because they also steal focus from whatever I'm doing.

Wherefore art though Wayland support, Gabe?

Especially frustrating is that there's a 12 year old open issue on steam's github asking valve to just use the OS's native notification system.

Copy process stalling when copying songs from PC to MP3 player.

11. Juni 2024 - 23:34

Forget about playing games I can't even copy some songs to my MP3 player. The copy process stalls on every file for about 10 to 30min before it proceeds to the next file. I could not even copy 50 songs. The process was taking too long. The MP3 player is Fiio X5 second generation.

I use my computer for other things and not being able to do something so simple is really making me consider going back to Windows.

I found out that this is known problem but there doesn't seem to be a solution for it. https://superuser.com/questions/424512/why-do-file-copy-operations-in-linux-get-slower-over-time

Has anyone else experienced something similar? I have also just found out that I cannot even delete songs from the MicroSD card. Is there any reason for this?

Best Directory/Filesystem Practices?

11. Juni 2024 - 23:17

Currently my drives look like this. The Hard Drives are currently used for media storage with my libraries pointing to them instead of C:. The Western Digital 1TB Sata SSD is primarily for Steam Games and I'm comfortable with reformatting that particular drive to a Linux native filesystem if need be. But I obviously don't have the external storage for everything. What would be the best configuration for NTFS drives to keep a similar workflow? I plan to use Kubuntu or Bazzite

ALVR audio not working with Linux

11. Juni 2024 - 23:11

I was trying to setup vr on linux and my friend showed me ALVR, and it seems to work for the most part, but I can hear my microphone, and the microphone picks up the speaker output, so it ends up doing that thing where the audio keeps looping between the two and makes a really loud high pitched sound. Why is this? I tried changing audio backends and such and it didnt work. If anyone can help that would be greatly appreciated since I can't post on the ALVR subreddit

Steam Tinker Launch - How to Use / No Title found for '31337'

11. Juni 2024 - 23:02

I recently switched to Linux Mint after Ars Technica's article on Windows Recall pretty much nope-ed me out of putting Windows 11 on my new rig. Steam works fine for my unmodded games like Red Dead Redemption 2 or Steam-managed modded games like Civilization. But I'm playing Fallout 4 for Sim Settlements 2 and I need a mod manager running.

I installed pacstall with no seeming issues to then install steam tinker launch. The program loads, but I'm stuck in "No Title found for '31337'", which I believe is some sort of default "nowhere" pointer. Where do I go to point STL at my games?

I do not believe I am running flatpak Steam, but I don't know how to confirm that.

Proton on single player games

11. Juni 2024 - 22:48

Hello, I am new here. I always enjoy single-player games. The only online game I play is Ghost Recon Wildlands because I have a friend that I play with occasionally. My question is about how well Proton can handle single-player games like RDR, Ghost of Tsushima, and DCS too and many others. Thanks, everyone.

Considering jumping into Linux because of Recall scandal.

11. Juni 2024 - 22:43

Haven't used linux in over 7 years from IT class. I am really considering switching to Linux because of Microsoft. My choice of Linux is either pop os or Mint. However, I'm not too familiar with what hardware is compatible. And to be more specific, I don't want an RGB build because I really don't want to deal with any rgb software on a Linux Distro. (So pure black performance over aesthetics build). I don't know what I should choose over Intel or AMD for a cpu. Nor what motherboard manufacturer to choose from or to either go with NVIDIA or AMD for a gpu. Or a headset, keyboard/mouse because, again, I don't know about the software compatibility. Remember, for context, I used Linux back in 2014 for my IT class. And again, from 2016-2017 for my senior year of high school, way before the steamdeck came out. And just when Steam Os was being built. So, my knowledge of Linux is dated. I would really appreciate some advice about what hardware I should make in a PCPartPicker list

Unable to sync steam cloud after copying steam folder to new disk

11. Juni 2024 - 22:22

Hey folks, after moving my steam folder to a new disk I accidentally executed chown -R $USER:$GROUP /new/disk/folder/steamgames, since then I'm unable to sync my cloud saves. I'm quite sure this is a permission issue so here's my question: what are the default permissions for the steam games folder and their subdirectories?

Thanks in advance for helping out.

Guilty Gear Strive not working

11. Juni 2024 - 22:13

I am trying to play Guilty Gear Strive on my PC, from what I can tell the game should be fully functional with my specs, but I cannot get more than a few FPS per second, even at low graphics settings with all other programs closed. Is there something I am doing wrong?

OS: Ubuntu 22.04 Proton versions attempted: Experimental, GE-Proton9-7, 5.13-6 CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4770S CPU @ 3.10GHz 8 core CPU Ram: 16GB VGA: AMD Radeon R9 290/290x 390/390x

Launch options attempted: WINEDLLOVERRIDES="mfplay.dll=d" %command%

If there is something else that may help solve this I would be able to provide more information too

Trying to copy songs from HDD to my MP3 player harder than it should be.

11. Juni 2024 - 22:05

Forget about playing games I can't even copy some songs to my MP3 player. The copy process stalls on every file for about 10 to 30min before it proceeds to the next file. I could not even copy 50 songs. The process was taking too long.

So then I pulled the SD card out of my MP3 player and inserted it into my PC through adapter. The copy process was still slow but much better than before . However 5min later my SD card gets automatically dismounted. So the copy process was interrupted again. I use my computer for other things and not being able to do something so simple is really making me consider going back to Windows.

I found out that this is known problem but there doesn't seem to be a solution for it. https://superuser.com/questions/424512/why-do-file-copy-operations-in-linux-get-slower-over-time

Anyone else having issues getting Steam to start on Fedora 40?

11. Juni 2024 - 21:20

As of today, Steam won't launch anymore.

steam.sh: line 813: 131 Segmentation fault (core dumped) "$STEAMROOT/$STEAMEXEPATH" "$@"

For me this happens on the rpmfusion-nonfree version on Fedora 40 as well as on the Flatpak version which I tried to install instead.

Want to switch to Linux but there's no way to make it work

11. Juni 2024 - 21:14

I own a Lenovo Legion laptop with Nvidia, the internal display is a 2560x1600p that requires fractional scaling. I usually use this display when I'm in class and connect it to an external monitor that doesn't require fractional scaling and use a dual monitor set up at home.

Windows does this perfectly, never had any issues and it's just as easy as plug and play.

With Linux, I have spent hours trying to make this setup works but it seems impossible at least for now.

I have found that any DE that uses X11 just won't be able to support this due to the fractional scaling and mixed refresh rates, so for Wayland I only have GNOME and KDE.

KDE: Fractional scaling works the best. Overall love the experience, but I've tried KDE Neon and Manjaro and both won't output to an external monitor, they won't detect any external monitor at all. EndeavourOS didn't boot and Fedora did work, but the interface was very laggy on the external monitor and I've done some research and this seems like a bug with reverse prime that's unfixed yet. I love KDE so I'm keeping an eye to see if they fix this bug

GNOME: The bug I mentioned on KDE was here, but they fixed it not too long ago. It works fine but the issue is with the scaling of XWayland apps. I must use some XWayland apps for school and the scaling is blurry under wayland. Also games won't detect my full screen resolution which tanks performance and visuals. Hopefully this will be fixed in Gnome 47 when they allow Xwayland apps to scale independently.

It feels like a so far yet so close kind of situation. I want to move to Linux as it's what I'm used to and honestly it feels good to use it, but I wonder if someone has dealt with the same issues as me and if they found any workaround to make Linux work.

Trouble getting OBS Studio and AMD GPU hardware encoding to work

11. Juni 2024 - 21:01

I have searched everywhere and tried everything, but no matter what I do I can not get OBS Studio to recognize and show AMD AMF hardware encoder in the video settings.

I am using Manjaro (latest updates are installed!).

My GPU is AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT.

I have installed the latest master branch of https://aur.archlinux.org/amdgpu-pro-installer.git

It has successfully installed the PRO drivers. The packages are the following:

amdgpu-pro-oglp 23.40_1741713-1 amf-amdgpu-pro 23.40_1741713-1 lib32-amdgpu-pro-oglp 23.40_1741713-1 lib32-vulkan-amdgpu-pro 23.40_1741713-1 vulkan-amdgpu-pro 23.40_1741713-1

I have disabled the AMD layer driver switching in the /etc/environment

```
/etc/environment
DISABLE_LAYER_AMD_SWITCHABLE_GRAPHICS_1=1 VK_ICD_FILENAMES=/usr/share/vulkan/icd.d/radeon_icd.i686.json:/usr/share/vulkan/icd.d/radeon_icd.x86_64.json ```
When I check what driver is running by default, I can see that it uses the open source driver:
$ vulkaninfo --summary [...] deviceType = PHYSICAL_DEVICE_TYPE_DISCRETE_GPU deviceName = AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT (RADV NAVI21) driverID = DRIVER_ID_MESA_RADV driverName = radv driverInfo = Mesa 24.0.9-manjaro1.1
When I either set the VK_ICD_FILENAMES to the PRO drivers or use the vk_pro command, I get the PRO drivers:
$ VK_ICD_FILENAMES=/usr/share/vulkan/icd.d/amd_pro_icd64.json vulkaninfo --summary OR THIS (BOTH WORK!): $ vk_pro vulkaninfo --summary [...] deviceType = PHYSICAL_DEVICE_TYPE_DISCRETE_GPU deviceName = AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT driverID = DRIVER_ID_AMD_PROPRIETARY driverName = AMD proprietary driver driverInfo = (AMD proprietary shader compiler)
I have tested the encoder via ffmpeg and used the hevc_amf video encoder on a random mp4 video I had locally. It works exactly as expected.
$ vk_pro ffmpeg -i example.mp4 -c:v hevc_amf output.mp4 [...] Stream mapping: Stream #0:0 -> #0:0 (hevc (native) -> hevc (hevc_amf)) Stream #0:1 -> #0:1 (aac (native) -> vorbis (libvorbis)) [...] frame= 3098 fps=410 q=-0.0 Lsize= 12682kB time=00:00:51.87 bitrate=2002.8kbits/s speed=6.86x
On a CPU I get ~25 FPS. With hevc_amf I get ~400 FPS. The AMF encoder clearly works as it should.
However, when I try to start OBS and force it to use the AMD GPU PRO drivers, or the open source ones, with the two methods as shown above, I can not get the AMF encoder to show up in the video encoding options. I only have the software encoders available.
The only relevant thing I was able to find in the logs is the following:
error: Encoder ID 'h265_texture_amf' not found error: Encoder ID 'h264_texture_amf' not found
So it looks like that OBS is unable to find the AMF encoder despite it being available and working.
Does any one got any idea what is going on?
Install steam demo on linux
11. Juni 2024 - 20:55
For small context, I am on linux mint and with the recent game annoucement during Summer Game Fest, there has been a lot of demos of indie games I wanted to try on Steam.
However, when trying to download it on the storepage it returns the following message :
Failure. An error occured while installing Tactical Breach Wizards Demo: \"Invalid platform\"
Since I can't add it to my library, I can't specify to use proton in the compatibility parameters.
I couldn't find posts raising this issue so I am asking here. Does anyone know how to install Steam demo on linux? or is this even possible?
