Minecraft letter keys

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 06. August 2025 - 17:31

I'm playing on Arch linux budgie and i have 2 keyboard layouts(US, RU)

When playing 1.7.10, minecraft doesn't react to keys with letters, but reacts to other keys like shift etc. When changing controls in settings all keys with letters shows 'NONE' key. Manipulations with keyboard layout doesn't help.

When playing 1.12.2 it's same as 1.7.10 but if i change controls in US they are shown different to which were by default(Walk forwards and Walk backwards)

https://preview.redd.it/39j0xcnab8hf1.png?width=1473&format=png&auto=webp&s=25aef1ad3b2f112fe5c838898e69754d6c42d883

And when changing controls in RU it works in RU keyboard layout(Strafe right control), but they're latching

How do i fix this?

P.s 1.12.2 is last version which has this problem, i checked 1.13 and everything works not depending on keyboard layout and all letter keys in controls replaced by russian letters by default

Otis_Inf Photomode Mod in Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 06. August 2025 - 16:30

Looking for anyone that understands how to run Otis_Inf Photomode Mod.

I can currently run the mod with Lutris-GE-Proton7 or Proton 7.

Only in Lutris because in Heroic Game Launcher it fails to launch. I was able to boot with Proton8, but I had to disable my Nvidia GPU and ultimately I couldn't get any of my games to boot with Proton8.

Wine-ge8-26 also doesn't work or wine-10.8-staging.

I get error "Unhandler exception Oxe0434352" which is .NET related.

Does anyone know what is required to run Otis_Inf?

Right distro for me.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 06. August 2025 - 16:25

I wanna start by saying pls don't be that person "you gotta try for yourself and see what you like" cus that more often than not, ends up with the user wasting time and frustrated, and never touching it again. I've seen it happen so many times..... and i experienced it for myself with other stuff.... I also don't have that much time as im a long haul trucker, so i cant sink in 100h fumbling around....

I've been a windows user all my life and i wanna switch to Linux, preferably completely if possible. For the moment tho, dual booting it's probably the sensible option.

Hardware. 7800xt B550 carbon wifi 5900x 2 x1tb 3.0 nvme drives + 2 hard drives (not connected at the moment) 4x8gb 32 RAM at 3600mhz

Setup. Test bench hanged up on a wall. Right now it's serving 2 rooms. I have connected to it: Competitive shooter side/desktop: 1 x 1080p 144hz vertical monitor (used occasionally only) 1 x 1440p 240hz main monitor 1 x headset via 3.5mm out/mic rear IO 1 x homecinema 5.1 via optical rear IO Single player side/HTPC: 1 x 1080p 60hz plasma TV 1 x headphone with dac/amp via USB rear IO 1 x 2.1 via optical to the back of the TV

What i like. I like having simplicity out of the box, but room to grow, and a lot of extra functionality for when i need it. For example on Android I'm using Nova Launcher and fair email. On first install i just installed them and was done with them, but overtime i did make a lot of use of the extra functionality. On the other hand, i have been running the same nova launcher layout for the past 7 years. Once I'm setup and locked in, i don't really care about novelties and what i like most is reliability and stability.

What i dislike. Over time I've been incredibly aggravated by updates that break what is already working well, adding stuff I don't need, and removing stuff I do need. I've been running my smartphones with auto update locked up for the past 10 years. My windows is usually sterile. The only thing i install from manufacturers, are chipset, audio, internet and GPU drivers. Everything else are third party tools. Occasionally i install the GPU suite from AMD or Nvidia, because they have features i need, but I'm not a fan of doing it. I skipped windows 8, and right now im on win10 with TPM disabled to prevent auto update to 11.

Software that I'm really attached too: Monitoring tools like hwinfo64+riva tuner. Fancontrol. Uninstalled it lately, but i miss it. I usually do the case fan mod on any GPU i have, and i run the fans from the motherboard, based on the GPU sensor. Right now i sort of indirectly set them up, based on CPU temps from bios. It works well enough, because i have the CPU tweaked and the temp behaviour on both components it's predictible and i have the ranges indentified very well, but it would work better based on GPU temps.

I'm slowly drifting away from competitive shooters, and trying to enjoy single player, especially older games. Competitive it's plagued with sbmm, eomm and you're being farmed. You're not playing the game, you're being played by the game.

New single player titles are hollow, they run bad and they play bad, and I can't stand UE5 blurry mess. My brother has a 4k monitor and 4080super and i still can't stand them even on the best settings....... Probably it's more obvious and jarrying to me, since I've being playing Apex, cs go, bf 1 and battlefront 1 for the past 5-6 years at 150-240fps. No problem playing bf 1 on the plasma at 1080p 60fps tho. It looks just as crisp and detailed like on the 240hz display. On the other hand control on 1080p native TAA and with no upscaling looks like dog.....

Oh, Wayland is a disaster for OBS

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 06. August 2025 - 16:03

I've just tried to reanimate my streaming setup, but even the basic things like a keyboard shortcut don't work.

Yes, Wayland was developed to ease the maintenance of the desktop environment stack, but it's not a reason to leave the app developers in the cold.

OBS is pretty vital for Linux gaming, it's the streamers who spread the word.

How do you use OBS on a modern Linux currently?

[Academic Study] Linux Gamers Wanted: 100% FOSS Research Stack on Gaming & Language Learning

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 06. August 2025 - 14:42

Hi everyone, I'm looking for participants for PhD research at University of Barcelona investigating whether gaming environments constitute legitimate language learning spaces that academia has overlooked. I thought this community might have particularly interesting perspectives given Linux gaming's international nature.

This study examines how non-native English speakers develop language skills through gaming. English often serves as a lingua franca in gaming communities, creating contexts where players regularly use English for communication and coordination. We're measuring language abilities and gaming habits to understand this population better.

I'm posting here because Linux gaming communities often have unique multilingual dynamics, and this community values software transparency. Our entire research infrastructure is built using only Free/Open Source software with no commercial APIs or proprietary tools.

Study Information:

  • Researcher: Emma Caputo ([emma.caputo@ub.edu](mailto:emma.caputo@ub.edu))
  • Institution: University of Barcelona
  • Duration: 15 minutes max
  • Method: Online survey + audio recordings + dialogue with our FOSS conversational agent
  • Compensation: €250 prize pool
  • Participants needed: Adults (18+) who are non-native English speakers with any gaming experience in any language
  • Study link: videogames.emmacaputo.com

Has anyone here experienced language learning through gaming? We're interested in how Linux gaming communities might create unique multilingual environments.

Thanks for reading. Happy to answer any questions about the research or technical implementation. Suggestions for other gaming communities to reach would also be appreciated.

Switch to linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 06. August 2025 - 14:25

I have two PCs. I'd like to switch my main gamin rig to something with the KDE desktop. Ive played with KDE before and I just like the customization in it.

I have two PCs. A 4080 with a 13700k and a 6900xt with a 10850k. Right now I game on my 4080 build on my dual 1440p monitor setup. The other PC is used on my 4k TV. I am wrestling with my options. I want one of them to be on Linux, and the Linux PC to my on my dual monitor setup. I'm open to switching where the PCs are. I have some money about $1200 to upgrade but I don't know if that's worth it. I have two balanced systems and the 9070 XT is barely better than my 6900xt and a 7900xtx is basically the same as my 4080. I keep telling myself save more and buy a nother system when there's a good AMD card to get at least a 50% upgrade over my 6900xt. Them if probably go both and cpu and gpu.

I think that my 4080 can upscale Netflix which is a plus for moving the PCs around. I know I could get my 4080 to run Linux, but the 6900xt would be much more plug and play, realistically a 4080 with a 10850k could play cyberpunk at 4k on that TV and at 60 fps. And I could get better streaming that way. I don't know if a 13700k and a 6900xt makes much sense though.

I'm just here to get some opinions, if I don't change anything until a build a new system that's okay. Just wanted some thoughts. Thanks in advance!

can we stop recommending bazzite to newcomers?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 06. August 2025 - 14:19

seriously, every time someone expresses interest in linux and gaming the name bazzite is bound to pop up, it's neither a good beginner distribution or a good distribution at all. i can only see bazzite being good at one thing and that's for a tv gaming setup, where it's only use case will be gaming and gaming only, because good luck getting anything productive done on that thing.

Your opinions on the more "stable" gaming distro

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 06. August 2025 - 13:02

Fellas. I'll be moving to Linux in a few days, just waiting for my RX 9060 XT to be delivered, since I'm new on Linux (only tried multiple distros via VM) I need to properly figure out what distro I should choose. I really like Mint for being stable and newbie-friendly but I'm not too fond with the idea of it having EOL plans unlike other distros (but I can see why they do that), and I'm also not too fond with having to manually install the more recent kernels if I want better gaming performances.

So I started poking through multiple distros in the past couple of months and tried a few of them:

  • Bazzite seems a wonderful option but I've heard it has frequent crash issues despite its growing popularity? I'll let the experts give me a heads up on this.
  • Then I saw CachyOS, I haven't tried it for long but it looked pretty stable and I noticed it even surpassed Mint on DistroWatch and lots of people sound very supportive about it! Although I read it is Arch-based, and even if I don't have real issues with Arch stuff since I'm not a guy who customises much stuff or installs weird packages (I'm not a tech-guy, lol)... I'm not too sure about its stability.

I know the safest options are usually the most popular, because they get the most support and updates, but again... I'd like something that doesn't break after a couple of days :')

Extra info: I mostly do gaming, draw with Krita and do video editing with DaVinci Resolve

Thank you in advance for all the replies! Can't wait to finally say goodbye to Windows

some people seem to suggest just not using any other apps will solve it but it didn't, my unpacking crashed at about 44% with the -1 error code
