Which DE is best for gaming?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 09. Juli 2025 - 11:03

I use GNOME with CachyOS. My hardware: r7 5700x, RTX 3070, 16GB RAM. Is the difference in fps in games noticeable compared to GNOME and KDE Plasma? Maybe in this case window managers are ideal

Nvidia kernel mode setting

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 09. Juli 2025 - 10:21

So following the rpm fusion guide for Nvidia. It talks about a kernel mode setting called drmset. I applied it reset pc and found warcraft no longer loaded to screen. Took it off again back to working fine. I'm a 3060 ti.

1) what is it exactly for 2) any idea why it would have caused an issue..

Nvidia 4070 Super running around 10c hotter in Linux Mint

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 09. Juli 2025 - 08:42

So I have an MSI 4070 Super two fan GPU and I have it undervolted in MSI Afterburner and a custom fan curve. In Quake 2 RTX the highest temp it gets to 67c and that temp is stable even after two hours. In Linux Mint within 10-15 minutes, the GPU temp is at 75c. I tried LACT and I can't get it to save any settings with the fan curve and I can't get any overlay programs to work in game. I'd like to undervolt if possible in Linux Mint, but I am also afraid of frying or bricking my card. There are so many videos and guides for undervolting in MSI Afterburner, but not much for Linux and what I have found it deals with using to terminal which makes me even more afraid of bricking my GPU.

Warframe - Severe crashing since Isleweaver

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 09. Juli 2025 - 06:58

Pretty much what the title says, since Isleweaver dropped I have been getting severe crashes and performance drops which were not happening for the last year I have been on Ubuntu.
I have attempted to tinker with launch options, but that did nothing, have even gone as far as reinstalling it, but that also didn't help.
I am, quite obviously, using the steam version, and am open to any help.
Was told that posting it here would be more helpful.

Spider-Man 2 barely runs on my Cinnamon Laptop

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 09. Juli 2025 - 06:41

So I've been playing Spider-Man 2 on my laptop -- and despite the glaring optimisation issues, it was running pretty well on Win 11. I was able to get around 60 fps at high settings. Yesterday, I decided to try out the game on the same system, but with Linux Mint installed. I'm not dual-booting or anything like that -- this is a clean install. I've updated the drivers, set the preferred GPU to my NVIDIA card at performance mode, used Proton on Steam, and have done everything. But the game just -- runs like ass!

I'm getting like 2 FPS, and I just can't seem to find out why. What's going on? I'm VERY new to Linux, and I don't really know what I'm doing yet. Do y'all know what could be the potential reasons why this is happening?

Thanks!

My specs:

Intel i5 13th gen

16 gb RAM

RTX 3050 4 gb (yeah, it's not much -- but it still ran game fine on Win 11)

Linux Mint Cinnamon

Wine illiteracy and infinite problems.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 09. Juli 2025 - 04:52

I am a windows-brained user learning arch linux over the past year.
Brain currently mush after slamming it into the brave-browser chat gpt trying to get my games to run.

I have recently installed a fresh ssd and switched gpu's from nvidia to amd.

A few months ago on the old setup I was able to get most games running in lutris due to months of random dependency installs, winetricks, and little bits of tinkering that I do not recall nor have record of.

With the new setup I have been running into constant problems, each taking the time to try and solve, but they seem endless.

I'm staring to get the sense that my wine is not functioning properly and is unable to "make the proper connections" (this is the best terminology I have) with other things such as lib32 dependencies, Vulcan, drivers, ect.

There isn't a singular issue, but a web of issues as a result of my lack of linux illiteracy.

I have a .wine folder, multiple folders in my /home/ that contain what i assume is "wine prefixes" (they contain C drive folders.)

links scattered to other folders that create an infinite cascading loop when i click on them as they seem to link to themselves.

I dont know what any of this means and therefor how to manage all of it.

I dont want to spend 7 hours solving a lib32 vulkan package error only to realize my game cant run because of some freefont2 lib32 issue.

The biggest joke to me is that all of these issues might be caused by something else.

My goal is to learn how wine works, and what im doing wrong.

No idea where to start. Youtube makes everything look like you type in a few commands and things work fine.

If anyone has advice on how to learn what to do, I'm growing cold and restless and would appreciate all the help I can get.

-Thank you

Current config:

EndeavourOS Linux x86

Kernel: 6.12.36-1-lts

Cpu: Intel i5-2400 (4) @ 3

Gpu: AMD ATI Radeon RX 580

single partition ssd encrypted with luks, no mbr.

all packages up to date, only use pacman, yay, and very few flatpaks.

Apex Legends Linux ban did nothing — new graph proves it

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 09. Juli 2025 - 03:23

Check out the graph in the latest Apex Legends anti-cheat update. It shows clearly that the number of cheaters stayed basically the same after 3 weeks of the Linux ban. So much for "stopping cheaters by blocking Linux"

https://old.reddit.com/r/apexlegends/comments/1l2hjkx/apex_legends_anticheat_update_20250603/

Looks like the only thing the ban actually did was push out legit Linux players, increasing their constant declining numbers. Who could’ve guessed?

What is the best controller to get?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 09. Juli 2025 - 02:33

With prime day now on I'm looking for a new controller. I already have a few controllers, but none of them leave me quite satisfied. Here are my issues with them:

  • xbox wireless controller + dongle: very nice, low latency. My main grip with them is that the wireless adapter is annoying to use. On my PC, I have to use XONE, which sometimes breaks on updates and not every distro has it. That's the best case too, as it doesn't work on either my mac or android tv, so I'm forced to use bluetooth or virtualhere for the android tv.

  • PS4 controller. Compatibility is nice, but every single one of my ps4 controllers had joystick issues with the L3 button. Also, difficult to replace battery and joysticks.

I was originally planning on buying an 8bitdo ultimate 2C, but I'm now reconsidering because of linux compatibility issues. Is there something like it, but better linux compatibility and better joysticks than the sony?

8BitDo Ultimate 2C Wired Controller on Linux not working

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 09. Juli 2025 - 02:03

Hi! I just bought this 8BitDo Ultimate 2C Wired Controller on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/-/es/Joysticks-Controller-Remappable-vibration-Consola-juegos/dp/B0F3815R5M/?_encoding=UTF8&ref_=pd_hp_d_atf_ci_mcx_mr_ca_hp_atf_d

Steam recognize this control as "unknown" ok, I see everything is fine, I play Hollow Knight and works fine, form 10-15 seconds then starts to look up and remap every button except the axis.

  • I test connection using this commands:

lsusb # Bus 003 Device 016: ID 2dc8:301d 8BitDo 8BitDo Ultimate 2C Wired (WUKONG)

journalctl -f # Looks fine, when conected, any weird disconnection

jstest-gtk # Recognize everything

  • I also try to use alias xboxdrv but controll it's not recognized as "xbox" (I use a pirate xbox360 controller in the past and this works fine)
  • I also have Xone installed: https://github.com/medusalix/ but I don't know how to use, should be work automatically?
  • OS: Linux Mint 22 x86_64

Anyone knows how to address this issue? Thanks in advance!

Multiple Monitor Issue

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 09. Juli 2025 - 01:39

Hello, I've recently installed Ubuntu 24.04 LTS on my PC and have been trying to play some of my Steam Games on there. However, my mouse regularly leaves the games I play and lands on my second monitor, tabbing me out (Especially when playing the 2005 Battlefront 2 using Proton, which works out wonderfully otherwise).

I've read online that apparently gamescope helps with this, but i just can’t get it to work because of some segmentation fault, even after messing around for an hour. (I tried building it myself from Valve's GitHub)

Is there some other way of locking my mouse to a game or even my primary monitor? Or can I find a version of gamescope somewhere for my ubuntu version which I wouldn’t have to build myself?

Thanks for your help in advance

Extreme ghosting/stuttering in H3VR, and only H3VR

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 09. Juli 2025 - 01:08

To get it out of the way first, I got VR working by using the open source AMD vulkan drivers, and have to restart the headset upon loading SteamVR. Doing this, it works every time.

Now on to my actual issue. When playing H3VR, I immediately in the starting area get some extreme ghosting, to the point where it feels like the fps is tanking, but is isn't. Makes it seem like I'm getting crazy double images when moving my head in any way, making it absolutely nauseating to try and play.

I have tested both Light Brigade, Blood Trail, and Ultimate Fishing Sim. None of them have this issue. Any ideas?
