New RX 7600 thermal throttling?
I recently upgraded to an RX 7600 (specifically Sapphire RX 7600 Pulse Gaming OC). It's currently paired with a R5 2600, obviously not a very strong CPU but I'm not sure if that's the issue. I played High On Life and it ran perfectly fine with few minor stutters, which is fine for me.
Here's a picture of MangoHud while playing No Man's Sky on High preset. https://i.imgur.com/SXnSPSi.png For comparison, I just watched a benchmark of the same GPU, same game and same settings with the guy averaging 120 FPS.
Mangohud is constantly showing thermal throttling and sometimes power throttling as well, which I read is possibly a bug and the card is not actually throttling. So why am I only getting 60 FPS when neither the card nor any single CPU core is fully utilized?
I'm using corectrl to undervolt and OC the card. I tried not changing anything, I tried only increasing power limit and setting power profile, same results. I'm also setting the CPU's governor to performance and also currently using zen kernel. The card doesn't reach it's max frequency (2755MHz supposedly) in this game and it's like it's actually thermal throttling. Same thing happened in BeamNG btw. I did not test other games yet because the card is literally brand new.
EDIT: Just found a similar post and the guy enabled Above 4G decoding and Resizable Bar and it solved it for him. Not for me unfortunately. Tried without rebar, also tried disabling Fsync and Esync. Btw I'm averaging 120FPS in High On Life and the card is being utilized properly.

VR on Linux - VRChat using an Apple Vision Pro?
Hi, just taking my first steps into doing VR on Linux. I just REALLY, really dislike Windows. I'm a fairly experienced Linux administrator, retired now for about 5 years.
My first goal is to get VRChat running on Linux.
So, I have a PC with an Intel i9, an Nvidia 4090, zads of RAM and SSD space. I am running Windows 11. I have a Bigscreen Beyond headset, and the Valve base stations and hand controllers, and I have been running DCS, MSFS 2024, and VRChat on this setup without problems (or actually, without more problems than most people seem to have!).
On the Linux side, I have Fedora 42 dual booting on that PC. I have SteamVR and VRChat installed on it (through Steam, natch). It is my understanding from reading Steam's documentation on SteamVR for Linux that the Beyond will simply not work with the Linux proprietary Nvidia drivers at this time. That's OK, because I also have an Apple Vision Pro headset, and I have had some luck in the past connecting the PC to the AVP using ALVR, at least when using Windows.
I have installed ALVR on my Linux partition. When I run it on both the PC and the headset, I am getting connected, and I'm not seeing any obvious errors being logged. Unfortunately, I'm only getting "wireframe" in the headset, it's not actually showing me any images yet. Still, progress!
Do I have a chance to get this working? It would be nice if audio worked through the headset, but I can certainly work around that if it doesn't.

Which distro is best for a beginner?
Hi so I’m new to the concept of Linux but I’m eager to give it a shot. I’ve looked into a few distros such as Mint, Cachy, and Bazzite. I was curious which one would be the best for someone who’s used Windows and Mac for years and looking for an easier setup, while getting the best gaming experience?

Good mouse with keypad on Linux
Hello everyone. I am currently using a Corsair Scimitar RGB Elite which I love the feel of, but sadly has a massive issue when I use it on Arch involving the pointer movement. It also does not have support from ckb-next.
Are there any comparable mice that have Linux support? I'd prefer vendor supported open source drivers but if the usermade drivers work great, that's okay too.
The issue I'm having is documented here

why isn't official steamos beta being discussed often on this group?
greetings, i write this question as casual linux user who switched from windows 10 since two years ago, during my distro hopping period, i tried out almost everything steamos based distro out there and all of them had one thing in common: they push new updates to the system on daily basis, and sometimes they even require to reinstall the whole system in case of kernel updates like nobara, but i didn't encounter such thing on official steamos, valve occasionally push system update and can be updated while on game mode, not to mention the decks plugins which allows for updating flatpaks within game mode. so far I've been using it for about two months, and given how smooth and seamless the user experience has been for me, i feel like it should be brought up as a viable gaming distro in my opinion.

How to run steam through a socks5 proxy on linux?
Hi, my university wifi blocks access to twitch, reddit, chatgpt and many more sites. But on firefox I route my requests through a socks5 proxy to an ec2 instance. Since firefox has a built in client for socks5, it works.
But when I try to run steam through proxychains, it does not work. Is there anyone who managed to get this worked out on their system?
I am aware that UDP is used for multiplayer games. But I just want to download offline single player (or local multiplayer) games on steam.

Can't run RE1 classic rebirth with lutris or steam
Like the title says, I've tried countless times trying to run Resident evil 1 with CRB via the lutris prefix and through steam and it doesn't want to work. It goes extremely smoothly up until i press ok on the config menu where a small black window pops and it immediately closes. Mind you I'm doing this with the Mediakite version of the game and not the GOG release which, if all else fails, i will buy and finally get this working but, until then I really wanna figure out what I'm missing here if anyone could help
As a sidenote, I have RE2 and 3 running perfectly through steam and have had no issues at all but granted those versions were made by Sourcenext and not Mediakite which most likely plays a run in this issue.

Toasty Bros - A Streamer with over 800k subs tried out and gamed on CachyOS
Cyberpunk 2077, runs great but sometimes crashes!
Hi, recently got back into Cyberpunk time to finally finish it properly, runs great on Linux have to say even better than it did on win11/10 from what I remember. No stuttering and very consistent smooth frame rate, I'm running Bazzite on ROG laptop with RTX 2070 8gigs, 32gigs RAM, i7 10th gen. External monitor is a pretty nice one with high refresh rate but only 1080p which is fine for me. Got the settings set to Ultra, native resolution, DLSS on Quality. No frame generation, and no ray tracing. Game looks great and running smooth but occasionally just decides to fully lock up. It does a full freeze, then 1 frame skip, sound still going. Then just have to minimize the game and force shut it down. When this happens and how often seems unpredictable, can happen after 20min of playing or it might run great for 3hrs. I've tried different proton versions doesn't seem to make a difference. Any idea why its doing it? any tweaks to fix it?

Why are display settings always broken on Linux? SteamOS on PC doesn't make it any better
I really want to use Linux for gaming, and ditch Windows forever, but it seems like Linux just doesn't want to let me. Now I'm trying the latest SteamOS installer. It seems to work just fine. Except it doesn't.
First, a big annoyance is the fact that there doesn't seem to be a way to change the default audio device. I have my gaming rig hooked to my LG C1 OLED TV, so of course I want the audio to be sent to it via HDMI, to then be sent to the home theater via eARC. But SteamOS ALWAYS selects the on-board sound on booth, and there is no way to change the default device to the graphics card, so I have to go and manually change it every time. Of course, this problem doesn't exist at all on Windows.
But that at least has a workaround. The true problem is with what doesn't work no matter what: display settings.
When in Gaming Mode, HDR can be enabled, but the frame rate is locked to a maximum of 60fps. This is unacceptable. My TV supports 120hz, and I play all of my PC games at 120fps (unless they are locked internally). On the other hand, in desktop mode, it is possible to set the display refresh rate to 120Hz no problem, and games run at 120fps. But HDR is unsupported!
Why does it always have to be like this? Why can't these simple things just work, the way they just work on Windows?
Maybe there is some crazy ritual to fix this, but I haven't found anything anywhere. If you know how to enable HDR and HFR at the same time on SteamOS, please let me know.

Processing vulkan shaders taking a tremendous amount of time
I recently got into playing around with Linux. I have been using bazzite. I initially installed it on a system that uses a ryzen 3 pro 2200g. I know this is not a fantastic processor and to boot I was using the integrated Vega 8 graphics. However, when I would launch a game, the "processing vulkan shaders" box would pop up and take a few minutes, then the game would run fine. Fast forward, I decided to drop an rtx 2070 super into the system to see how adding a graphics card would work. Mind you I completely wiped the initial install of bazzite and reinstalled bazzite using a new bootable flash drive with the selected Nvidia options from the bazzite website. Everything seemed like it was running OK until I decided to try to run games. Now the "processing vulkan shaders" takes an absurd amount of time. Likely would take hours if I let it finish. This clearly can't be normal. I was wondering if anyone had any idea of why this was happening or how to solve this issue? Any help is appreciated

Jittering on arch with hyprland
Hello, i have been on arch for quite some time now with kde but i decided that i wanted to wipe my system and reinstall, so when i reinstalled i decided to go with hyprland instead of kde because i wanted to try it out, i used the JaKooLit install script to install his config and dotfiles because i liked the way it looked and i wanted to give hyprland a go without too much of a hassle, but when i installed steam and got some games on my system i noticed that most of the games are having this weird jittering effect where the whole display moves from the left and right, i had this issue before on kde and the solution was to disable adaptive sync but from what i found on my current config adaptive sync is already off, i looked for solutions but i only see solutions for people who have NVIDIA gpus and i have an amd gpu so im not quite sure why this is happening. does anyone know of any solution or would be willing to help me troubleshoot?

.rar and .exe insanity, please help
Recently, I attempted to download a somewhat obscure game off of a trusted host website and came across the bitter realization that Linux doesn't open .rar files naturally, because the game folder came in a .rar format. So, I installed both the rar and unrar command lines and attempted to use them on the game folder and it didn't work. I tried opening the folder with both File Roller and Files, which are both apps native to the Ubuntu install on my laptop and neither worked. Then, I decided to use the official rar software (on my PC as "rarlinux" with some numbers/letters after it) and it didn't work. Deleted and redownloaded the game to make sure I didn't mess with the files enough to make it un-unrar-able. Still didn't work. The only rar and unrar command that worked was "a", so I used it to extract the main game file, which is a .exe. Couldn't get it to load (always said "error: command exited abnormally") even though supposedly .exe files can be read and loaded using File Roller. Double checked to make sure the game had been recorded online with Linux-ran devices and confirmed that people had made it work. Tried to find a single other piece of Linux advice or even a tool that loaded rar files and couldn't find anything except a "cache number verification" command line that, upon execution, didn't work and I didn't have the know-how to update the command line because the cache number line was clearly outdated. Downloaded a very popular game off of a different trusted website and the exact same issues made themselves apparent. I attempted to bashscript my way into some answers with both games and it drove me up a wall. I ended up feeling insane just over trying to play games that people have clearly easily made work on Linux before. I have no idea why nothing is working. According to everything I read on discussion boards, the rar and unrar commands/programs should have worked no matter what given that I tried it on freshly installed and untampered files. I even tried finding a new file managing app to help, but hit a brick wall trying to navigate the store and just gave up for the night. It has been made clear I cannot solve this issue myself.
SPECS Dell Latitude 7490 Ubuntu latest ver. 5th Gen i7 core 32 GB RAM 1 TB storage
I will happily share more information in comments or DMs to get this solved if more information becomes necessary to share. I'm still new to Linux so I don't always know what specs will be relevant to any given scenario.

Linux vs Windows Batman Arkham Knight
This game still looks fantastic! Linux clearly wins in this case.
