Does anyone here have the Radeon XT 6950?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 20. April 2025 - 11:41

Hi!

I'm right now considering if I should buy a used Nvidia RTX 3080 TI or if I should get a Radeon XT 6950.

I've always used nvidia cards and I quite like them. But i'm thinking about whether I should try something different this time around.

The use case in this scenario is a HTPC connected to a 4k TV.

So to the people that have this Radeon card - how is it working for you and how are games running /w ray tracing?

Old pro laptop retired as a low end gaming linux machine ?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 20. April 2025 - 11:31

Hello everyone,

So a friend of mine gave me his old professionnal laptop. A Lenovo A475 with 8GB DDR4 and an AMD A12 8830B CPU (integrated Radeon R7 graphics).

It runs on Win10 but, with the end of support in October and the usage I'm gonna get from it (mainly web browsing, text writing and netflixing) I plan on getting Linux Mint on it.

Now, I will be using this laptop almost only when I am travelling for my job (otherwise, my pc master race desktop is my only go to). And I'd like to know if I could reasonably run games like Age of Empire 2 DE, NFS Most Wanted (2005), Crusader Kings 2 on it natively ? I am a complete Noob when it comes to gaming on linux. I have a few experience with linux machines but only for NAS servers and very basic desktop activities. I plan on running Steam for Linux and playing with Proton compatibility (even for games that are not from the Steam Library). Is it the good way to go ? Basically if a game runs smoothly on Win10 on that machine, will it run the same if I play on Linux ?

Thank you.

Computer Build for gaming on Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 20. April 2025 - 10:37

Hi guys!

I'm thinking of building a computer for the first time in over 10 years - for gaming on linux. My current computer is a cheap Walmart laptop that's a Core i7 1200 series with iRIS Xe graphics that weaker than the last computer I built 10 years ago. Getting pretty irritated at it crashing every few matches on War Thunder on Bazzite/Steam because of what I would assume is the GPU overheating. Fan goes 100% as soon as the game starts. I've got it set to limit at 60 FPS in an effort to reduce the work the GPU is doing.

Not a big budget. Don't need anything fancy.

I'm way out of date on what the market is right now on Intel and AMD but in the reading I've been doing I, if I understand it correctly AMD has pulled ahead of Intel. I have more experience with Intel, but it's not really a big deal to me because I'm not brand loyal. I just want something I can play on without it crashing / overheating. Don't need ultra high resolution or 1000 FPS.

I've got an old Micro ATX tower w/ 300w power supply I can use that I got from the in-laws when they got a new laptop.

QUESTIONS:
1 - Is it possible to stay under $500 for a CPU/MB combo and GPU?
2 - If so what are my options?

As paydays allow, a better power supply, SSD drive and max RAM for the motherboard will be purchased.

Can currently play War Thunder in a limited capacity due to the crashing problems. End goal is no crashes and playing DCS World.

Thanks!

Is there a way to use IPXWrapper with all games in Lutris

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 20. April 2025 - 08:15

I haven't exactly started yet, but I thought in case I get Lutris to play on my GNU/Linux box, I thought I should ask before trying to do so.

I am interested in using IPXWrappers with Lutris for all the games using the IPX/SPX protocol to play on the local area network.

I did recall reading instructions on how to do it, but since then, I cannot find those instructions.

So, can someone tell me how I can integrate IPXWrapper with Lutris so I can play all my IPX/SPX games, such as Warcraft II BNE and Command and Conquer Red Alert 2, on the LAN?

Any idea why Devil May Cry 5 performs worse on Linux?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 20. April 2025 - 05:42

I tried playing devil may cry on with windows and my Linux distro. The moment I open a browser in the background the performance of the game absolutely tanks and becomes unplayable while in windows, I was playing the game at the same exact settings maybe even lower on Linux while having 2 windows of my browser open while copying a backup of the game files to my pendrive and the performance drop want even noticable. I didn't exactly take benchmarks because I assumed that my system just couldn't run the game until I switched to windows for another reason and noticed this. I use proton GE and Arch btw.

how can i view event viewer logs for proton games?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 20. April 2025 - 05:31

a game i have (flight simulator x) crashes when i select a specific addon, but the logs that PROTON_LOG=1 sends don't have any useful info.

on windows, fsx errors can be easily debugged because they always leave event logs, but i don't know where these are on linux also, i've already confirmed that the crash isn't caused by anything having to do with my wine/proton config; it's most likely some dll causing errors

Steam gives me no option to install BG3 on Nobara

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 20. April 2025 - 03:27

Title. It's saying it's only available on windows and max, which is very odd because it installs with no issues on my steam deck. I'm assuming there's some sort of setting I need to check to get around this but I can't find it anywhere. Running Nobara Linux 41 KDE Plasma Version 6.3.3, and GE-Proton9-27

Bg3 (gog) can't join cross play games

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 20. April 2025 - 02:52

Linux Mint using Heroic launcher. I've been unable to join any cross play lobbies. Singleplayer works fine. I can see my friends lobbies, but when I try to join, or if someone tries to join mine it just goes to a loading screen that's stuck at 0%. I'm using Heroic Launcher with Proton GE. I'm fairly new to Linux, but pretty technical.

Lutris + R6S?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 20. April 2025 - 02:48

Rather simple question, to see if other people have tried playing R6S with Lutris.

I'm running Manjaro, and will be avoiding Win11 like the plague... but still miss siege once in a while....
my question is: has anyone been banned from siege while using Lutris? If not, how long have you been using it?

Steam rpm fusion doesn’t seem to work well

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 20. April 2025 - 02:08

I am on fedora 42 and with the 9070 XT. Steam rpm is really off for some reason. It works but if I close it and try to open it again it completely flips out. What happens is it tries to launch then crashed , then tries to launch then crashed … I have no idea what to do ? Or what even is the issue. I am a newb at Linux so please go easy on me. The only times that it worked well was when I tried to launch it from the terminal. But after I closed it and tried to launch it from the terminal nothing happened and then on my dock it would just try again and again and again to open it but would crash within a second. The only fix was to do a restart

Is Mint really a bad distro for gaming?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 20. April 2025 - 00:49

Every few posts I see on here, there is someone in the comments disparaging mint for having older packages. Is that really an issue or is it just a matter of subjective taste?

I've tried using fedora workstation and kde in the past but they've always been buggy for me. Could be because I'm using a 3060. Mint has always been relatively solid for me with the exception of having older stuff.
